Skill Drills These are skills we should aim to work on each week at practice. Do each drill for about 30 or so minutes every practice. These skill drills will help each individual move on to the next level. The Basics (work on these each practice for minutes: 1. Teach kids to sit on their ball and listen to your coaching 2. Teach kids to stand and put one foot on top of ball 3. Teach kids to kick into the net (run up to the line and kick into the goal then get back in line). Basic Foot Movements (Integrate one foot movement into each of four practices): Lucy Laces Sydney Sidestep Outside Otto Dribble around cones or flats by using the outside of the foot Henry Heel Roll ball from toe to heel over and over again then switch feet and do the same Then try this xz1acke The following drills are options for you to use while coaching the next 6 7 practices (our season). For the first few practices, we will more than likely teach basic soccer skills. Then for the final 20 minutes of practice, we can break into scrimmage games. The important thing is that we are having fun while teaching some basic soccer skills. At the end of this skill sheet is a page given to us by Coach Kolbe regarding field rules. This is for your info. only as some of this does not pertain to us or our field specs. It is simply an informational sheet, a guide to go by, as is this skill sheet. If you have drills you are using for your team during practice, please share them by setting them up as the ones are listed here and then sending them to pto@sjsfl.org. Thank you for your time and commitment to the kids and the school.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SOCCER SKILLS FOR KIDS TO DEVELOP 25 COMMENTS The Skill of Kicking Equally With BOTH Feet will make your child s accomplishments on the soccer field take off! It s simply the most important soccer skill for kids to develop. How To Teach The Most Important Soccer Skill The coolest thing about this skill is that teaching it is extremely simple. And most kids understand the concept pretty quickly. Start by kicking the ball back and forth to your child. (We call this game kickback.) Each time you kick it to him/her, alternate which side of his/her body you kick it to. Then call out which foot he/she should use as you kick it. Right foot. Left foot. (You should alternate which foot you use each time you kick it to him/her as well. This will help give him/her visual reference of the concept.) Then you can play a game of long kickback to help him/her build strength in his/her legs. You can move to passing games using both feet next. Then dribbling games. If your child already has a dominate foot, no big deal. Just play these games and tell him/her to use only his/her weak foot. But don t call it his/her weak foot. No need to put that thought in his/her head. Make up some cool name for a game that uses the foot you want him/her to develop. Something like, Left Foot Launcher. Praise The Development Once your child starts to use his/her former weak foot, without being reminded, praise the heck out of him/her (ex. Great left foot buddy! )

WALKING THE DOG Walking the Dog is a great way to introduce ball control and dribbling to very young football players. It also encourages the development of spatial awareness and soccer vision. Even children as young as two or three will learn how to keep the ball close to them while running and I ve used this game with children as old as 10! Set up: Scatter lots of flat cones in two different colors in a large playing area. In this example, I ve used green and white cones. Every player has a ball. How to play: Tell your players their ball is a dog. Now ask them to give their dog a name. Have some fun with this! Who can think of the silliest name for a dog? Now it s time to take the dogs for a walk. Tell your players the white cones are lamp posts and the green cones are trees. To begin with, the dogs want to sniff every lamp post. This means players have to run with the ball and pause beside every white cone. Then: It s raining! Get your dog under the trees! Now the players run with their ball to the green cones. Variations: Dribble with both feet (or just their weaker foot). Who can get under a tree the quickest? You don t want to get wet! Who can let their dogs sniff the most lamp posts in 20 seconds?

PASS THRU GATES Setup- split group into pairs. Use cones to create gates about three yards apart. The Game - Each player takes a turn trying to pass the ball between the gates. A point is awarded each time the ball goes through the gates with out touching a cone. Players keep track of their own points Play for 3-4 minutes. Loser does pushups. Make the game easier or tougher by adjust the size of the gates or by adjusting the distance between the two players.

ON YOUR BIKE! This drill was adapted from a game in The Ultimate Football Warm- Ups Manual. Objective: To practice passing and receiving skills. Set- up: Put your players into pairs. One ball per pair. Place three flat cones in a short line. How to play: One player is a server and his partner works round the cones. The player working must go forward to receive a pass then back- pedal up and around the cones in order to receive another pass on the opposite side. The players work for 30 seconds on each set on the following: 1. First- time pass back with left foot. 2. First- time pass back with right foot. When the sequence is complete, swap the players round. Coaching notes: Players should work at speed but accuracy is also important. Make the game competitive by seeing which pair can get through the entire sequence without making a mistake.

MOVING GOAL GAME Two equal teams. Select two players to become the moving goal. These players take the ends of a pole, rope or towel and stretch it out as they move around the space. The other players play a game trying to score in the moving goal. Coaching Points: 1. Players should look at the football during shooting motion. 2. Strike the ball with the instep (laces) with toe pointing down and ankle locked. This will give the players a firm hitting surface. 3. Hips should face the goal. Try These Variations: 1. Add two balls. 2. Add a second goal. With more goals, players will get more shooting chances and must play with their eyes off the ball. This will present more complex decision making.

RACE CAR Nascar fun dribbling drill for younger players Set up players in an area. Each with a soccer ball. The Game - Coach yells "Ladies and Gentleman, start your engines". All players have to tap top of the soccer ball with the bottom of their cleat ten times. Coach yells "first gear" players dribble there soccer ball slowly. Coach yells "second gear" players dribble a little faster. "third gear"- a little faster "fourth gear" - as fast as they can. "third gear" to "second gear" to "FOURTH GEAR" haha If two players balls touch "CRASH" - - five push- ups outside circles Coach can yell "reverse" everyone has to reverse their race car.

KNOCK OUT Knock Out- a old classic Setup - Create a large circle with cones players each with a soccer ball inside the circle. Object of the game - Players to try to kick other soccer players balls out of bounds while protecting his or her own soccer ball. Player who kicks out most wins.

GET OUT OF HERE Great game to work on all aspects of the game. Can be played 1v1,2v2, or 3v3. Can be used to focus on offense, defense, techniques, tactics. Even though there are lines,,, game moves really quick. THE GAME- two lines of 3-5 players behind two cones. Coach in the middle with lots of soccer balls. When the coach yells "go", the first players in each line sprints around the corner cones and around the goals and tries to be the first player into the playing area. The coach serves the ball to the first player into the playing area. From there, they just play a 1v1 small sided soccer game. If a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds, the coach yells "get out of here". The two players then have to sprint off the field coming off by the coach so that they don t collide with the next two players. The coach yells "go" and the next two players go.

Number of Players On the field of play, there will be 7 players (including goalie). YMCA YOUTH OUTDOOR SOCCER PLAYING RULES *A game can be played if a team only fields 4 players. If a team can not field at least 4 players, the game will be counted as a forfeit. Games will start no later than 5 minutes after scheduled start time.* Length of Game Ages minutes quarters Size of playing field The playing field will be approximately 60 yards long by 40 yards wide. Start of Play The referee shall determine who kicks off first. Play begins with a kick-off. This happens at the start of each quarter and after a goal is scored. After each quarter, the kick-off shall be taken by the team opposite from the team that took the kick-off from the last quarter. On a kick-off, the ball must be stationary on the ground at the center of the field. Then the ball must travel the distance of it's circumference into the opponent's half of the field before being in play and may not be played a second time before being touched by another player. Every player on each team must be in their own half of the field and all players of the team opposing the kicker must be at least 5 yards away from the ball when the ball is put into play. If this rule is violated, the kick-off shall be retaken. After a temporary suspension of play for any reason not otherwise mentioned, the referee shall restart the game by a drop-ball where the ball was when play was stopped. A player may not play the ball until it touches the ground. If this rule is violated, the drop-ball shall be retaken. A goal may not be scored directly from a drop ball. The Goalie may use their hands inside of the Goalie Box. The Goalie may kick or throw the ball out of his or her goal area. The off-side s rule will be in effect. There will be no substitutions unless there is an injury. Goal Kicks On a goal kick, the ball must leave the Goal Box before it is touched by another player. If it is touched by another player before it leaves the box, then the kick is retaken. Corner Kicks If the defensive team kicks the ball out past their own goal line, the result will be a corner kick for the offensive team. A goal may be scored directly from a corner kick. Fouls and Misconduct Fouls and misconduct are penalized by awarding FREE KICKS. Direct free kicks (from which a goal may be scored directly against the offending team) is awarded only for intentionally: 1. Kicking or attempting to kick 2. Tripping 3. Jumping at 4. Charging from behind 5. Charging violently 6. Striking or attempting to strike 7. Holding 8. Pushing 9. Handling the ball Indirect free kicks (from which a goal may not be scored, unless the ball is touched by a player other than the kicker before going into the goal) is awarded for all fouls, misconduct, and offenses other than the 9 direct free kick fouls listed above. A free kick (direct or indirect) is taken from the place where the offense occurred. All opposing players must be at least 5 yards away from the ball when the ball is put into play. If this rule is violated, the free kick is retaken.

Ball in and out of Play The ball will be thrown in from the sideline from where it went out. All opposing players must be at least 5 yards away from the ball when put into play. A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw in. Referees The referee's duty is to ensure that the game is played fairly for the maximum enjoyment of the players with as little interference by the referee as possible. In the event a referee should for some reason fail to appear for the game, the coaches should mutually agree upon an official from available personnel. The referee has jurisdiction from the time he or she enters the field of play until he signals the end of the game. His or her decisions are final. Field Rules and Participation 1. All members of the team not on the playing field must be on their designated sideline. The coach is the only person to be allowed on the sideline at any time. 2. Any player in uniform must play two complete quarters per game. He/she must be inserted in the line-up at the beginning of the quarter and remain in the game for the duration of that quarter. Failure to abide by this rule will result in forfeiture of that game. In the event of injury or sickness and it is necessary for the player to be removed from the game, the injured player will receive credit for the quarter. The player who replaces them will not. Coaches should report any player not playing the requirement to the referee, sports coordinator, and sports director. 3. Parents and other spectators are to remain in the stands. Any parent who enters the playing field or who harasses the referees, coaches, or players in such a way as to interfere with the normal progress of the game shall cause their child to be benched for the remainder of the game and said child will be ineligible to participate in future games until the parent appears before the YMCA Program committee.
