Royals Defense 2013 ASKA Players need to know what to do on every play. A player is not ready to play for us until he knows: Alignment Stance Keys Assignment For each play call, for each formation, for each key read, each player must know their ASKA on every down. DGTYK Don t Go Til You Know, GO hen You Know. Players need to have focus and patience. On each play, they must be focused on their keys. They do not pull the trigger until they know what they are seeing. Once they see the play, they should aggressively attack. ommunication Pre-Snap communication is critical to getting our defense aligned properly, and recognizing the Offensive formation and potential threats. ommunication is critical in our defense and must be stressed in every drill for Linebackers and Secondary. very drill should involve at least one of the following: Alignment alls Run / Pass alls Ball alls, Bingo alls HINA, IN, or OUT calls by orners HL and RO calls by Safeties PUSH alls by Linebackers Any other communication required on any given play. It is the responsibility of position coaches to stress communication in Individual and Group Drills every day, so that they will carry over to Team situations. Play alling As much as possible, the Front 6 are independent of the Back 5 players on the defense. any calls that affect the front do not affect the back end, and visa versa. Our defensive players only need to know the few words that pertain to them.
Alignment The alignment of the Front and the Secondary are divorced. The strength call for the Front is made depending on the call: TIT: strength call to the Tight nd, most receivers, or field SPLIT: strength call opposite the Tight nd, most receivers, or field ID: strength call to the wide side of the field SHORT: strength call to the short side of the field ST: strength call to strength of the back field (to the set of the back in a 1-back, shotgun) OPPOSIT: strength call away from the strength of the back field The ike Linebacker is responsible for communicating the strength call to the Front 6, who will also echo the call. The alignment of the Secondary will be based on the passing strength of the formation. Passing strength is based on: 1. ost receivers 2. ide Side 3. ost Dangerous 4. Left The Free Safety is responsible for communicating the strength call to the Secondary, who will also echo the call.

overage alls Our coverage is a split field coverage. The field is divided into the Read Side and the Away Side. The Passing Strength of the formation will be the Read Side. Passing Strength is determined by: 1. ultiple Receivers 2. ide Side 3. ost Dangerous 4. Left Passing strength is called independent of the Run Strength. ike and ill Linebackers must know responsibilities of both Read Backer and Away Backer. Strong Safety and eak Safety must be interchangeable. On Offensive Shifts and otions that result in hange of Strength (OS), they will swap responsibilities rather than swapping sides. overage Play alls have three parts: 1. Read Side overage 2. Away Side overage 3. Doubles overage 4. Trips overage xample: 2 Blue Bronco Solo plays 2 coverage to the Read Side, Blue coverage to the Away Side, and Bronco to the Away Side if there are Doubles. If we get Trips, we check to SOLO. Bronco will be the base check if we have Twins to the Away Side. If we do not tag BRONO, we will play Blue on Away Side Twins Receivers. xample: 2 Blue Solo plays 2 coverage to the Read Side, Blue coverage to the Away side, and SOLO check if we get Trips. Twins will not change the away side call. Some parts of coverage will be omitted at times. If there is only one coverage call before the Trips coverage, we will play that coverage on both sides. xample: Blue Solo plays Blue coverage to both sides. The only check we make is SOLO if we have Trips. SOLO is the base Trips heck. e will not tag SOLO unless game plan dictates. The Trips heck will not be included in the call unless we are going to check SPIAL or ROLL to Trips. xample: 2 Blue Roll plays 2 coverage to the Read Side, Blue overage to the Away Side, and Roll heck to Trips. 2 Blue would play 2 coverage to Read Side, Blue overage to Away Side, and SOLO check to Trips. 5 would play 5 coverage to Read Side, 5 coverage to Away Side, and SOLO check to Trips.
overage hecks BRONO tells us to play an to an with #1 and #2 Receivers on Away Side coverage. The orner plays man coverage on #1, the eak Safety plays an overage on #2. The Away Backer plays Slice Technique, running with any crosser than comes through his zone. SKY tells us to play Safety force on the Away Side coverage. The eak Safety will tighten down to 5-6 yards and the orner will play Deep ½ coverage. Sky is the base call for the Away Side in 2 overage. Sky is automatic to a Nub Tight nd. SOLO is a Trips heck that puts the Away Side orner in an to an with the #1 Receiver. The Away Backer has an overage if the back (#2) releases to his side. The eak Safety plays Blue ½ Alignment, checks for run force, then high walls #3 Vertical. The Read Backer has low wall #3. SOLO is our automatic check to Trips and will not be tagged most of the time. SPIAL is a Trips heck that puts a 2 Sky all to the single receiver side. e will use this check if the Offense is trying to isolate their best receiver away from the Trips. The Read Side orner plays an to an on the #1 Receiver. The, S and RB play 2 overage on #2 and #3 Receivers. ROLL is a Trips heck that creates a Quarter-Quarter-Half coverage. The Read Side orner will play a deep quarter, the Free Safety plays a deep Quarter, and the Strong Safety will play the flat (2 overage rules). e will play the coverage called to the Alert Side.
0 overage Rules 0 overage is a an overage that can turn into either over 1 or over 0. e adjust 0 overage based on who is blitzing from the outside in. orners: an on #1 Receiver eak Safety and Strong Safety: an on #2 Receiver Removed unless blitzing ike and ill: an on #2 in Backfield or #3 Receiver in Backfield unless blitzing.
