4 MISCELLANEOUS TEAM NOTES PEROVIC OUT FOR REST OF SEASON Marko Perovic underwent successful surgical procedures on his left knee on Thursday, June 2, and will miss the remainder of the 2011 season after being added to the team s season ending injury list... he is expected to make a complete recovery and return to full soccer participation in six to nine months... Perovic, 27, had the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee reconstructed, and also had his medial meniscus tear repaired and a chondroplasty on the medial femoral condyle in the same knee... the procedures were performed by Dr. Thomas Gill at Massachusetts General Hospital... the procedures were necessitated after his recent knee injury suffered in the Revolution s match against Kansas City on Saturday, April 23 exacerbated pre-existing conditions. JOSEPH DECLINES GOLD CUP CALL-UP After initially accepting Grenada s call-up for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Shalrie Joseph decided this weekend to remain with the Revolution and decline the opportunity to play for his homeland the Grenadian-born midfielder was initially included on Grenada s roster, but had not decided if he would play in the Gold Cup last week he informed the Revs he would accept the call-up, but on Tuesday morning, he arrived at Revolution training at Gillette Stadium and informed the technical staff he would remain with the Revs for the tournament instead of joining Grenada. HONORARY WESTERN CONFERENCE MEMBERS Saturday s match at Dallas will mark the Revolution s 10th match in 13 matches against Western Conference teams the Revs have only played fellow Eastern Conference members three times so far this season (vs. D.C. United March 26, at Houston April 17, vs. Kansas City April 23) the Revs come into Saturday s match with a mark against teams from the West with the sole win coming against Vancouver on May 14 the team s four draws came at LA (March 20), against Portland (April 2), at Vancouver (April 6) and against Colorado (May 7). DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN IN RECENT WEEKS After a season-worst 3-0 loss at Chivas USA on April 30, the Revs defense has gone into lockdown mode in MLS regular-season matches, allowing just three goals in the last four games, including back-to-back shutouts the team s back-to-back shutouts on May 7 against Colorado and May 14 against Vancouver were the team s first since Aug. 7, 2010 (1-0 win against D.C.) and Aug. 14, 2010 (1-0 win against Houston) Matt Reis has been in goal for each of the team s last four matches, and has posted an 0.75 goals against average in that stretch. BUT TEAM S SCORING ISSUES PERSIST While the Revs defense has stepped up the last month, the team has struggled in the attacking half of the field the team has scored just two goals in the last four games, both coming off set pieces Shalrie Joseph converted a penalty kick the game-winning goal against Vancouver on May 14, while Chris Tierney added a free-kick goal at San Jose on May 21 the team was shut out against defending MLS Cup champion Colorado on May 7, and against the MLS-leading LA Galaxy on May 28 the team has not scored from the run of play since Rajko Lekic s 83rd-minute goal against Sporting Kansas City on April 23. LINEUP STABILITY CONTINUES In each of the last three games, Steve Nicol has deployed the same starting lineup these last three games mark the only times this season he has used the same starting lineup in multiple games overall, Nicol has used 10 different lineups in 12 games prior to the May 14 match against Vancouver, Nicol had twice used the same 10 field players as the previous starting lineup against Portland (April 2) and at Vancouver (April 6) - but the goalkeepers were different in both games: Matt Reis vs. Portland and Bobby Shuttleworth at Vancouver. FIRST FREE-FOR-ALL Chris Tierney s free kick goal on May 21 at San Jose was the team s first direct free kick goal in 2011 in 2010, Marko Perovic scored three free kick goals, but the Serb has missed all but four games this season with injuries Tierney, as well as Benny Feilhaber, Zak Boggs and Kenny Mansally, have become the team s first-choice free kick and set-piece takers in Perovic s absence this year. JOSEPH IS NEW PK LEADER With his successful penalty kick against Vancouver on May 14, Shalrie Joseph claimed sole possession of first place in the Revs career penalty kick list with 10 he entered the game with nine career penalty kicks, tied with former captain Steve Ralston who also had nine in his nine-year Revolution career ( ) Joseph is now 2-for-2 on the season and 4-for-4 spanning the last three seasons. VERS-A-TIERNEY Chris Tierney continues to show his versatility for the Revolution Tierney has now played five different positions in all competitions this season: left back, left midfield, center midfield, defensive center midfield and center back (USOC qualifier) in 2010, Tierney led all MLS players with seven positions played during the season, adding right back and attacking center midfield to the list above... Tierney has started the last three games on the left wing, his preferred position. NEW TEAM CONSECUTIVE APPEARANCES LEADER Kevin Alston is now the team s active leader in consecutive appearances with 11 the thirdyear defender missed the team s first match of the season at LA on March 20, but has started every game since the streak is Alston s second-longest appearance streak in his career as he went 33 consecutive games including playoffs (31 straight regular-season matches) between May 9, 2009 and May 5, no other Revs player has a longer current consecutive appearances streak. NO EVERYDAY MEN IN THE RANKS The Revs do not have a single player who has appeared in all 12 games so far this season... four players - Kevin Alston, Shalrie Joseph, Stephen McCarthy and A.J. Soares - have each appeared in 11 games this year... Alston missed the season opener because of a hamstring strain, while Joseph and Soares have missed games while serving red-card suspensions... McCarthy missed the Chivas USA match on April 30 after playing two games in four days (vs. Sporting Kansas City on April 23 and at D.C. United for a U.S. Open Cup Play-In on April 26)... New England and Vancouver are the only two teams in MLS that do not have a single player who has appeared in every one of the teams games. LET S PLAY TWO A LOT At least eight times this season the Revolution will play two games in one competition week, including non-mls matches after this week, the next time the Revs will play two competitive games in one week is June 15 against Toronto and June 18 against Chicago both games at home that week will mark the first time in 2011 that both games played in one week will be at home the Revs have yet to claim a result in both two-game meetings happening in a single week this year the full slate of two-game weeks follows: April 6 at Vancouver (T, 1-1) and April 9 vs. RSL (L, 2-0) April 26 at D.C. (W, 3-2, Open Cup Play-In) & April 30 at Chivas USA (L, 2-0) May 25 at Kansas City (L, 5-0, Open Cup Play-In) & May 28 vs. LA (L, 1-0) June 15 vs. Toronto & June 18 vs. Chicago July 13 vs. Manchester United & July 17 vs. Philadelphia July 20 at DC & July 23 at Colorado August 3 vs. San Jose & August 6 vs. Chivas USA August 17 vs. Houston & August 20 vs. New York SEEING RED OFTEN The Revolution has picked up three red cards this season and has seen five opponents - tied for the league high with Columbus - ejected from games overall, through 12 games, New England s three red cards put them in a tie for second in the league in the category with four other teams, and one behind league leader Vancouver all three of the team s red cards came in the first five games of the season, and the Revs haven t been shown a red card in any of its last six matches as a point of comparison, the Revs picked up four red cards total in each of the last two seasons (2010, 2009), and five in 2008 the team s record for red cards in one season is six, set in 1998 the team s opponents five red cards through 10 games has already surpassed the Revs opponents season totals in nine previous seasons, and has equaled the 30-plus game totals of 2005, 2003 and 2000 s opponents in 2009, Revs opponents picked up six red cards, while the team s record against came in 2001, when seven red cards were handed out to Revs opponents. THEY RE SAVE MEN The Revs goalkeeping tandem of Matt Reis and Bobby Shuttleworth enter the week second in MLS in saves with 45 combined in the team s first 12 matches the Revolution goalkeeping unit s 45 saves is four shy of saves leader Toronto s 49 when breaking down the saves per keeper, however, Reis 36 saves in just eight matches would rank him eighth in MLS among teams, and his 36 saves in nine games is more than both Kansas City (30) and Real Salt Lake s (27) nine-game totals. HOMETOWN HEROES POPULATE THE ROSTER The Revolution now has five New England natives on the roster, lending credence to the team s moniker... in addition to veterans Pat Phelan (Enfield, Conn.) and Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) who are now in their fourth seasons with the team, the Revs added three more local players this off-season... outside midfielder Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, Conn.) and central midfielder Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) were both 2011 draft selections and signed during preseason training... in high school, Kinne was the 2006 NSCAA Connecticut State Player of the Year, while Sousa played at nearby B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River... joining them is Diego Fagundez (Home Grown, Leominster, Mass.) who was signed to the senior team in November.
