Dictating Space

AIMS & OBJECTIVES: Timing onto the ball Dictate to opposition keep to one side Force wide ACTIVITY CONTENT (Including Progression) PREPARATION AND INTRODUCTION COACHING POINTS INTRODUCTION: These practices look at dictating space when defending. Holding a player up as they try to attack through the court is a highly underrated skill, it adds immense pressure. Triangle runs represent this well: 1) Attacker drives to get free defender marks tightly forcing wide. 2) Attacker either moves to change direction or releases ball & runs defender holds up. 3) Attacker cuts back into the game defender keeps wide. PRACTICE AND PROGRESSION DICTATING SPACE FORCE WIDE & KEEP WIDE In pairs using full court Shadowing : run the patterns that you might run in a game situation whilst defending (court specific areas). One person shadow attacking, the other defending. Find a triangle run/pathway which is common to your position or your opposite position. Walk, jog & run through marking the triangle Small steps Eyes on player/ball Constantly adjust body position Angles (keep changing to dictate)

E.g. WA/WD Centre pass 1. WA trying to get free at centre pass WD forces WA wide makes sure WA does not cut back for a forward ball 2. WA penetrate down court WD keeps WA up the court & on her back so she can see the game or go for interceptions 3. WA cut to top circle space WD keeps WA wide so she cannot cut to the top space TIMING ONTO THE BALL 1. PASS & RUN TO WALL In groups of 6 line up laterally to the wall in 2 groups of 3 players approximately 4-5 metres away. Pass the ball into the wall, next player times the run to receive the ball at the wall. Movement should be continuous. PROGRESSION Left or right hand dictated Add in a preliminary move before receiving a pass from the wall. Head up; see the ball come off the wall Attack path of ball and take shortest route to the ball Run feet to get as close to ball & wall as possible avoid lunging to catch Give wall a good pass, encourage strong passing Accurate pass Do not move to soon Timing is very important if move to soon add in an additional preliminary move to correct the timing

2. PASS BACK ON WALL In groups of 6 line up laterally to the wall in 2 groups of 3 players approximately 4-5 metres away Pass the ball back into the wall towards the direction the player came from. The next player times the run to receive the ball at the wall on an overlap. Continuous movement. Join the opposite line after an overlap. 3. LINE In groups of six, set up in a line one behind the other facing the wall Drive onto the ball that has been passed into the wall. Attack every ball and deliver a strong pass into the wall. Clear to the back of the line.

PROGRESSION Corner of sports hall or court area using wall passing the ball off the wall/corner 4. BALL STRAIGHT In groups of 6 line up laterally to the wall Two groups of 3 players approximately 4-5 metres away. Ball is passed into the wall in a straight line. The next player has to move onto it, feed it back to the wall and then react and clear out of the way to allow another player to time their run onto the ball. The receiver sometimes dictates where the ball is placed this is not allowed Watch the ball - vision Keep head up Timing of the drive

5. PASS & RUN REACT In groups of 6 line up laterally facing each other Two groups of 3 players approximately 4-5 metres away The ball has the eyes. Player with the ball passes the ball into a space, the opposite player has to react and drive onto the ball PROGRESSION Add a change of direction and vary the placement of the ball. DICTATING SPACE - FORCING WIDE In groups of three, set up a square in 1/3 of 1/3 on a netball court 1 Feeder 1 Attacker 1 Defender Angle body position able to step beyond the player to keep them one side or run out on an angle to intercept Base narrow/move feet Peripheral vision see ball and player Force wide Experiment with open and closed start positions for the defender

Draw an imaginary line down the middle of the square Attacker aims to receive ball twice in both areas alternately Defender aims to keep the attacker away from the ball so she cannot receive it easily as a forward option. The defender aims to stay ball-side to force the attacker away on a poor angle. If the ball is passed to the attacker on the poor angle, the defender can then go for the interception. If the attacker receives 4 passes before the defender gains 2 possessions/intercepts, the defender does a forfeit. If the defender gains 2 possessions/intercepts before the attacker receives 4 passes, the attacker has to complete the practice then complete a forfeit. DICTATING SPACE Set up in groups of 4. 1 Feeder self feeds and turns to introduce the ball 1 Attacker 1 Defender Angle body position able to step beyond the player to keep them one side or run out on an angle to intercept Base narrow/move feet Peripheral vision; see ball and player Encourage attackers to go back to come forward when getting free 1 Player Coach to feedback on key points Attacker & defender work within a box 1/3 of 1/3 see diagram 1 feeder outside the box (offset to the D/A pair) aiming to pass the ball into a space for the attacker to run onto as forward option.

Angled defender keeps their attacker away from the forward option, trying to force the diagonal pass so that the player can then cut into the path of the ball and take the intercept Defender aims to keep the attacker in the box and force wide to make the interception angle easier. Defender works for two sets of 8 interceptions. This is the basis of all 1:1 marking, dictate the attacker s positions to gain possession. Keep attacker on one side away from the ball to force poor angle then intercept. If attacker is ball side, engage a team mate (probably the one 3 marking the ball) & run the attacker into her. Your team mate can either drop to shutdown the option or intercept the pass if it is delivered. DICTATING SPACE: PROGRESSION Dictate space and be aware of others Groups of 8. 1 Feeder 1 Attacker 1 Defender in box 1 Box 1 & Box 2 set up 1 Attacker 1 Defender in box metres apart 3 posts standing behind both boxes Peripheral vision When ball is released cut onto ball Quick feet Communication Timing of the intercept

Feeder self-feed & turn to introduce the ball Attackers primarily aiming to receive in forward option Defence forcing wide/diagonal to create the intercept Three posts/back people initially just coach and support. PROGRESSION Long ball options. Defenders mark their own attacker and are aware of the other defender. If neither attacker is free then a long lifted ball goes to one of the posts behind the boxes. The defenders should have time to run on to intercept. CONDITIONED GAME MATCH PLAY Ten through court from centre passes. Ten backlines (continuous after a goal is scored). POINTS SYSTEM 2 Points for each of the below: Keeping player on one side/wide Holding up through court Doing own job first then being able to see & go for interception Tight marking to deny player ball CONDITIONS Must think about timing and preliminary moves through the court Pass to forward option only Must be totally free when receiving the ball
