FFA C Licence (Youth) SAP session plan Victor Jauregui June, 05 Striking the ball: Shooting Context This is the first session of the core skill striking the ball of this specific aspect (shooting) in the first 6-week cycle of the annual plan. The degree of difficulty of the exercises has been adjusted to suit the technical and experience levels of the players. Specific aspect The session is sequenced to follow from, and be integrated with, the topic v to open a passing/shooting lane. The emphasis is on the conclusion of that sequence: shooting on goal. Session objective In this session I aim to improve the players shooting technique and decisionmaking in front of goal.
Skill introduction: Shooting Set up multiple adjacent 8 0 areas, each as shown in Figure. As many areas (sharing the markers) should be set up as required to accommodate the number of players available, with four (preferably) to six players in each area. The markers of the playing area for the skill training component served as the set-up for the skill introduction. 8 Figure : Skill introduction: shooting technique practice. Video of the skill introduction is available by clicking on the link below: PL0rDrm57IqVAkxeyzW_XBsoycs65s Initial set-up groups of two or three players on opposite corners (diagonal) of rectangular area of width 8 (width of a goal) one marker in centre of area one ball per group first player of group standing just inside marker/pole (representing a goalpost) Sequence first player in each queue (yellow # opposite ends act simultaneously) dribbles to the marker (representing a defender), beating it to one side after beating the marker, the player passes/shoots to the next player in the queue (red #) the player follows his pass to the opposite end next player(s) in the queue repeat Additional structure/progressions do dynamics on way through after passing to next player, or whilst waiting different techniques for opening a passing/shooting lane: feint and/or outside step-over feint to shoot, and cut onto other foot start at other marker; beat on other side using other foot
Coaching points hit the inside of the far post with low shot/pass eyes on ball at point of impact strike ball with top of laces (away from toes) or inside of foot (accuracy) glance up just before shooting to view target make feints convincing to open shooting/passing lane Concluding game In teams: each player earns one point for each shot/pass within one yard inside post/marker. Team score is the sum of its members score. Team with most points after one minute wins.
Skill training: Shooting The skill training exercises outlined below proceed in steps from low difficulty to high difficulty by increasing the degree of opposition:. vgk: passive defender (coach) plus goal-keeper; players practice technique. v+gk: one active defender with attacking overload; players practice with limited pressure under favourable conditions. v+gk: realistic attacking scenario; challenge of opening a shooting lane (a) vgk (b) v/v+gk Figure : Skill training. Video of the skill training component is available by clicking the link below: PL0rDrm57IqVAkxeyzW_XBsoycs65s Step : vgk Initial set-up set up in/around the penalty box using a goal, if available two queues of players on edge of D, as shown in Figure (a) each player with a ball coach positioned on a line level with penalty spot, adjust distance to goal as required one fetcher (#) at each post who fetches ball after shot Sequence player (yellow #) beats passive defender (coach) to open passing lane and shoot
shooter moves next to/behind post to become fetcher (yellow #) for next player fetcher fetches ball and joins opposite line repeat from other line Additional structure/progressions players take on passive defender using angled approach (coach stands in middle) Coaching points contact ball with top of laces or inside of foot glance up to sight target before shooting eyes on ball at point of impact use feints to throw defender Step : v+gk Initial set-up 5 0 area as shown in Figure (b) one queue of defenders next to goal (red) two queues of attackers to the sides of field (yellow) coach and balls at end opposite goal shooting line 8 from goal (adjust as required) Sequence. on coach s signal (whistle) two attackers and one defender enter field. player second to ball must overlap behind ball carrier; pass to team-mate forbidden until overlap completed. if defender wins the ball he must complete with a pass to coach. at conclusion players rotate counter-clockwise to next position 5. repeat with next group Additional structure/progressions players must shoot with first touch once ball crosses shooting line adjust height of shooting line as required to achieve the right difficulty level (step up/down) defender must defend above shooting line (step down) adjust player starting positions introduce time limit to score (step up) 5
Script Team (exercise) task (in v/v): use overload to open a shooting lane Player tasks: before shooting, glance up to see goal-keeper positioning, and shoot to the most favourable side try to shoot low and far-post unless goal-keeper is covering it if defender tracks you, feint (pass/shoot/accelerate) to draw defender, to release partner if defender blocks pass, take on to open shooting lane reinforce good technique: refer to skill introduction points create situations which make it as hard as possible for defender to protect against both attackers: e.g., contrasting movement (cross-over/overlapping runs) if team-mate shoots, follow in in case GK drops ball if -on- with GK, shape to shoot to throw him, or disguise direction of shot if defender tries to block shot, shoot between his legs Cues are in italics. 6
Skill game: half-court shooting game (v+ + GK) The skill game is shown in Figure. Figure : Skill game: use overload to shoot. Video of the skill game component is available by clicking the link below: PL0rDrm57IqVAkxeyzW_XBsoycs65s Initial set-up v 5v5 with neutrals area roughly two penalty boxes, depending on numbers and player abilities GK in goals Basic game rules Half-court game: attacking team tries to score in goal against defending team when defending team wins possession, it must carry the ball across the opposition s goal line or pass to coach; if successful they become the attacking team Additional structure neutrals can/not score (step down/up) must score directly off a neutral with limited touches (step up) must shoot with first touch inside shooting zone (step up) If a second goal and an additional goal-keeper had been available there would have been a goal at each end. 7
Script Team (exercise) task: create overloads to free a player for a shot Player tasks: as in skill training component 8
