1 Anfield, Liverpool Tuesday, October 00 0:CET Group C Matchday After winning in France, Liverpool FC welcome FC Girondins de Bordeaux to Anfield aiming to confirm their progress to the knockout stages. A second victory against Bordeaux, coupled with a win for PSV Eindhoven against Galatasaray SK in Group C's other match, would do just that although a draw would be enough should PSV prevail. Liverpool lead PSV on goals scored at the top of the group after making it seven points from three matches with a 0 win at Bordeaux on October. Peter Crouch headed the only goal in the th minute, following up his double in the win against Galatasaray on Matchday, as Ricardo Gomes' side suffered a second successive UEFA Champions home defeat after a 0 reverse against PSV. Both matches on Matchday, between PSV and Liverpool and Galatasaray and Bordeaux, finished scoreless. The results leave Bordeaux bottom of the section with just one point and not a single goal scored. Three points at Liverpool would revive their hopes but a draw would be insufficient should PSV defeat Galatasaray. Home help History as well as current form suggests a tough assignment awaits the Ligue side. Liverpool's record from seven past home meetings with French opposition is impressive, with six wins and one draw. The most famous was the first, against AS SaintEtienne in the 7/77 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarterfinal. En route to their first continental crown, Liverpool came from a goal down to win on the night, on aggregate. Bordeaux have not won any of their five past matches against English opponents and their two previous journeys across the Channel have proved fruitless: the Girondins lost 0 at Aston Villa FC in the 7/ UEFA Cup first round and 0 at Manchester United FC in the /00 UEFA Champions second group stage. Anfield old boy Bordeaux midfielder Vladimír Šmicer was one of the heroes of Liverpool's 00/0 UEFA Champions triumph. The former Czech international made appearances for the Merseysiders in the competition and played a pivotal role as a substitute in their remarkable final victory against AC Milan in May 00. A rdminute replacement for Harry Kewell, Šmicer struck the second goal of Liverpool's famous fightback and also converted a penalty in the concluding shootout. After six years at Anfield, it was his final appearance. Bordeaux coach Ricardo has got the better of Liverpool in the past. He was in charge of the Paris SaintGermain FC side that beat the Reds in the /7 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semifinals, winning 0 in the first leg in Paris to set up a aggregate success. Liverpool's 0 win in Bordeaux made it a hattrick of victories for manager Rafael Benítez against the French team. As coach of Valencia CF, he oversaw two triumphs in the 00/0 UEFA Cup quarterfinals. 7 Liverpool Match facts Although no current Liverpool player has yet reached 0 appearances in the UEFA Champions, three are closing in on the mark; Jerzy Dudek and Jamie Carragher lead the way having each featured in games, two more than John Arne Riise. Sami Hyypiä, meanwhile, is within eight games of a century of UEFA club competition appearances; the centreback has featured in games. Four Liverpool players made their UEFA Champions debuts on Matchday ; Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio, Mark González and Dirk Kuyt. Peter Crouch is one of seven players on three goals in this season's competition having scored twice against Galatasaray before getting the winner against Bordeaux. Didier Drogba leads the way with four strikes. After three rounds of matches Liverpool and FC Steaua Bucuresti, with minutes each, have had possession for the shortest amount of time in this season's competition. Xabi Alonso turns on November. Liverpool ended Aston Villa FC's unbeaten start to the season on Saturday with a success at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt, Crouch and Luis García all found the net for the home side in the final minutes of the first half, rendering Gabriel Agbonlahor's strike early in the second period for Aston Villa a mere consolation. "The first half was as good as anything we have produced this season, apart maybe for the first 0 minutes against Galatasaray," said Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez. "We started with a high tempo and maintained it and the players were able to give the fans what they wanted." Kuyt recovered from a calf strain to take his place in attack at the weekend, but Fabio Aurelio was ruled out with the same problem so Riise continued at leftback. Dutch striker Kuyt's goal was his first since September for the club he joined in the summer. In contrast to their UEFA Champions form, Liverpool are suffering mixed fortunes in the Premiership. On October they lost 0 at Manchester United FC with Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand on target in front of a Premiership record crowd of 7,. The game featured an onpitch tribute to United legend Sir Bobby Charlton on the 0th anniversary of his Old Trafford debut by Liverpool heroes Ian Callaghan,Roger Hunt and Tommy Smith, while posters of glorious moments in the Anfield club's history were displayed in the away end. Captain Steven Gerrard returned to the right of midfield while Kuyt was the lone forward in place of the pair against Bordeaux, Crouch and Craig Bellamy. "It is clearly one of my most disappointing days as manager of the club," said Benítez. "It is a game I know everybody at the club and the supporters want us to win, particularly at Old Trafford. I know we are a better squad than last season but we have to prove that." Last updated ::CET 7

8 It confirmed Liverpool's worst Premiership start since /, when they had nine points from nine games to compare to eleven this term. That year Liverpool went on to finish sixth. Liverpool have scored only one away goal in the Premiership this season, a penalty against Sheffield United FC on the opening day in August. However, the goals flowed on October as Liverpool reached the Cup last with a defeat of Reading FC at Anfield. Liverpool have won the trophy a record seven times. It was the competitive first meeting of these clubs who have more than 0 years of history between them. Reading visit Anfield again in the league on November. Fowler with his first goal since that penalty at Sheffield United and Riise had given Liverpool a 0 halftime lead and Gabriel Paletta added another before Andre Bikey pulled one back. Crouch's goal on 77 minutes seemed to remove any doubt but Leroy Lita and Shane Long set up a nervous finish. Captain for the night, Fowler, took his goal tally to in Cup games. He hit the woodwork twice in the closing stages, and Kuyt also volleyed against the crossbar. Benítez said of Fowler: "It was a very good finish. I have seen him in training every day and he is very good. Only people with his quality can do this. It was a fantastic game for the people, it is normally not for the manager but for supporters." In the fourth round on November Liverpool will visit Bimingham City FC, the team they beat on penalties in the 00 final, and a venue where the Reds triumphed 70 in last season's FA Cup quarterfinals. Harry Kewell took part in the latter tie but has not appeared this season and on Thursday confirmed that he expects to miss at least another four months after treatment in his native Australia for both septic arthritis in his left foot and a persistent groin problem. "We're looking past February," he said. "I'm just itching to get back into playing but it's going to be a while. It's been hard, seven weeks so far, and I'm looking forward to going home." Liverpool have lost just once in their last games at Anfield, a 0 defeat by SL Benfica on March that ended their UEFA Champions defence in the last. Liverpool have completed a full year unbeaten at home in the league since a reverse against Chelsea FC on October 00. In that time they have recorded wins and draws. Xabi Alonso made his 00th Liverpool appearance against Villa while Steve Finnan made his 0th and Fowler his 0th. If Benítez does not deploy his starting lineup against Aston Villa FC for the Bordeaux tie he will have altered his first XI in 00 consecutive matches. Benítez said: "I suppose it will be another statistic to discuss, but it's not unusual. It's not just Liverpool, all the big clubs change their side regularly to rest their players. There are other ways to be successful, sure, but this is working. We have won four finals in two years so I'm happy with it." Gerrard has been included on the shortlist for the 00 FIFA World Player of the Year award, which will be announced in Zurich on December. Bordeaux Last updated ::CET

Joseph Enakarhire celebrates his th birthday on November. Bordeaux claimed a Ligue victory on Saturday after they came back from behind to defeat CS SedanArdennes at home. Struggling Sedan took the lead midway through the first period with a deflected shot from Nadir Belhadj. Just before halftime Wendel equalised with a freekick before Micoud put Bordeaux in front shortly after the restart and Darcheville added a third from the penalty spot. Jurietti had to be replaced by Rio Antonio Mavuba inside the final ten minutes against Sedan after suffering an ankle injury. Micoud's effort was the first time he had scored at the Stade ChabanDelmas since February 000, during his first spell at the club. "I think we've found our style," said Micoud. "We have needed time to find our feet but now we feel good on the pitch and had enjoyed playing together today." Defenders Marc Planus (foot) and Enakarhire (ankle), as well as midfielder Šmicer (thigh), all missed the game against Sedan due to injury. Midfield duo Fernando Menegazzo and Mavuba were both left out as well as youngster Pierre Ducasse played in an anchorman position. Bordeaux continued to struggle after their 0 home loss to Liverpool on October. The following weekend, as Micoud and Darcheville were sidelined with minor injuries, they were defeated in the league at FC SochauxMontbéliard. After eleven games of the 00/0 Ligue season Bordeaux had 0 points and were ranked third. Their first eleven games of the current campaign have brought points. For the first time, coach Ricardo Gomes paired Gérald Cid and Enakharire in central defence. Tunisian international centreback David Jemmali missed the Auxerre encounter having been everpresent this season. Having been sidelined for more than six months with a thigh injury, Šmicer is doubtful for the return against his former side Liverpool. The Czech, who scored in the 00 UEFA Champions final for the English club and also converted a penalty in their shootout win, said recently: "The thing I missed when I left Liverpool was the chance to say farewell to the Kop." Although they lost to Liverpool, Bordeaux players and coach were happy with their new tactical system with Micoud supporting two strikers. "I think we finally found our system," said Darcheville. "It's just a question of hard work to make it more efficient." Centreback Planus, who has been sidelined with a metatarsal injury since Matchday, started jogging for the first time last week. 17 UEFA information FARE Action Week The global profile of Europe's premier club competition the UEFA Champions has proved an ideal vehicle to spread the word against the evil of racism in football. Matchday saw a number of antiracist activities to support the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network Action Week against racism, intolerance and discrimination. Activities included the captains of all the teams wearing Unite Against Racism armbands, while playerescort children sported Unite Against Racism Tshirts. In addition, announcements were made to fans in stadiums over the loudspeaker systems calling for opposition to all forms of racism, and Unite Against Racism adverts were placed in matchday programmes as well as the official UEFA Champions magazine Champions. Supporters, players, clubs, associations, minority organisations, antidiscrimination groups, youth centres, schools and the sports media are all involved in campaigning work for the Action Week, which continued until 0 October. Participation by ethnic minorities and migrants, inclusion of women and girls, and action against homophobia in football are all on the agenda. UEFA staff made their onfield contribution to the Action Week last Monday with UEFA's staff side and the Genevabased HOPE team comprising players of various nationalities braved the pouring rain at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland to help spread the message that racism has no place in the game. UEFA's team ran out 7 winners in the match. Coach Educators course Speaking at last week's th UEFA Course for Coach Educators at the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) technical centre in Coverciano, Andy Roxburgh, the UEFA technical director, offered a detailed overview of the proposed Alevel Elite Youth Diploma for coaches, which he hopes will raise the standard of youth coaching across the continent. "The whole idea of this new licence is to turn today's talents into tomorrow's heroes," said Roxburgh. "Our job is to educate the coaches because they are the ones involved in the process of turning the talents into heroes." Marcello Lippi, who led Juventus to the UEFA Champions, was a star attraction at the course and in a questionandanswer session, he recalled taking his first steps in coaching with the UC Sampdoria youth team in the 70s. "Coaching young people is a mission at least that is how I felt about it and that's what I want to say to educators who coach young people. After three years as a youth coach, I realised it was not what I wanted in the long term. But coaching youngsters should not be viewed as a stopgap." UEFA donations UEFA is to donate CHF.m (.m) to its four major Social Responsibility partners for the 00/07 campaign. The amount was approved by UEFA's Executive Committee at its recent meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The donations to be paid out of money raised from fines imposed by the UEFA disciplinary authorities on clubs, players and national teams in the 00/0 season are being made to the Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia (SOEE) body, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, and the Danish Cross Cultures Project Association (CCPA). 18 Head coach profiles Rafael Benítez Date of birth: April 0 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Real Madrid CF B, CP Parla, CD Linares Coaching career: Real Madrid CF (youth coach), Real Valladolid (assistant coach), CA Osasuna (assistant coach), CD Tenerife, CF Extremadura, Valencia CF, Liverpool FC Rafael Benítez has stamped his authority on Liverpool FC since his arrival from Spain on June 00. Former Primera División stars Xabi Alonso and Luis García blended perfectly with locals like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as Benítez immediately guided the Reds to UEFA Champions glory. Liverpool's recovery from 0 down against AC Milan and subsequent penalty shootout victory was one of the greatest finals ever. Although the holders were eliminated in the 00/0 first knockout round, Benítez still oversaw an FA Cup triumph. After spending his playing career in the lower leagues as a midfielder with Real Madrid CF B, Benítez coached youth players at Madrid before taking charge of CD Tenerife and CF Extremadura impressive spells which earned him his big break at Valencia CF in 00. He led the club to their first league title for years in 00, repeating the trick in 00 when they also won the UEFA Cup in Gothenburg. That 0 victory against Olympique de Marseille was his final game before being lured to Liverpool, a club starved of league honours since 0. The Reds' continental glory in 00/0 has yet to be matched in the Premiership with fifth and then thirdplaced finishes but there was an FA Cup triumph last May. Benítez again masterminded a dramatic comeback, with Liverpool recovering from a twogoal deficit against West Ham United FC to draw and then prevail on penalties. Ricardo Gomes Date of birth: December Nationality: Brazilian Playing career: Fluminense FC, SL Benfica (twice), Paris SaintGermain FC (twice) Coaching career: Paris SaintGermain FC, SC Recife, EC Vitória, Coritiba FC, EC Juventude, Fluminense FC, CR Flamengo. Ricardo Raymundo Gomes caused a few raised eyebrows when he returned to French football in summer 00 at FC Girondins de Bordeaux. The appointment of Ricardo, in the Brazil squad for the 0 and FIFA World Cups, proved justified come the end of the campaign when Les Marine et Blanc had finished second, securing direct entry into the UEFA Champions. It was the club's best finish since their / title victory and it was no surprise in September 00 when he extended his contract by two seasons. Predictably for someone who excelled as a toughtackling centreback for club and country, Ricardo instilled a strong defensive mentality at Bordeaux, who finished the season with the best defensive record in Ligue, conceding just goals in games. He also profited from his knowledge of South American players such as compatriots Carlos Henrique and Fernando Menegazzo. Ricardo himself made the trip from his homeland to Europe as a player in, having been a revelation for Fluminense FC, crowned champions in /. Ricardo helped SL Benfica win the Portuguese title in his first season in /. A second championship followed in 0/ but he then left to join Paris SaintGermain FC. A Ligue triumph was achieved in /, before he returned to Benfica, eventually retiring in. Ricardo was not out of the game for long. He became PSG coach at the start of /7 and took his side to the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final, where they lost 0 to FC Barcelona. In the following season, PSG won the two French cup competitions. Ricardo then headed home to improve his coaching experience, not least with the Brazil Olympic team between 00 and 00. The time was right to return when Bordeaux came calling in June 00.
