BREAKING DOWN DENVER S 2016 SCHEDULE Denver will look to defend its back-to-back-to-back Summit League Championships in 2016 against Eastern Illinois, IPFW, IUPUI, Omaha, Oral Roberts and Western Illinois...IUPUI was the only Summit League team to take a point off the Pioneers in 2015 (1-1 draw). The Pioneers 12 match non-league slate includes nine teams that finished in the top-100 of the RPI a year ago, including three teams in the top-50...each of the four opponents in Denver s season opening road trip were in the top-76. DU will play eight multiple-game weeks in 2016, compared to just five in 2015 (18 compared to 16 regular season matches). 3 A NEW ROAD FORM Denver has nine away games on the docket in 2016, including the season-opening four-match road swing. Denver has 10 points from its first four away matches. The Pioneers earned 20 points from their eight matches away from CIBER Field in the 2015 campaign, including seven points against three opponents that were in the NSCAA poll at the time. Denver earned just one point away from home in the 2014 campaign (0-7-1) to go along with its home record. DU inked 18 of its 30 possible points away from home in the 2013 campaign, going in the side s first season in The Summit League. GOAL SCORING FORM Redshirt-junior Blake Elder has scored in four-games on the trot for the Pioneers, his first four goals with the Crimson and Gold after transfering from Air Force after the 2014 season...elder is the first Denver player to score in four-consecutive matches in its Division I history. Elder was named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week (9/19). Junior centerback Kortne Ford scored three goals in four matches off set pieces from 9/4 (UIC) to 9/15 (Saint Louis). Ford has headed corner kicks home from three different kick takers (Hanlin, Underwood and Akamatsu). Ford was named the NSCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 20. Andre Shinyashiki and Sam Hamilton have been setting up goals for fun with five assists each already in Shinyashiki has four assists in Denver s last five games, while Hamilton has three assists in four. DENVER S DEFENSIVE SURGE Denver has kept four cleansheets in the last eight, including three-straight to end its four-game homestand. The Pioneers did not allow a shot in their 2-0 win over [-/RV] Saint Louis on Sept. 15, the first time the Pioneers have kept that defensive record in their Division I history. Denver allowed three shots on goal in its entire four-game homestand in September, including zero shots on goal in the final two games...the Pioneers have allowed just 18 shots on goal in their first eight matches (2.25 per game). GET IT EARLY OR LEAVE IT LATE Graham Smith s 89th minute equalizer at Monmouth (8/26) was Denver s latest equalizer/game-winner in regulation since Alex Tarnoczi scored a 90th minute leveler (89:33) in Denver s 5-4 extra time win at UNLV on Oct. 16, Blake Elder scored an 87th minute winner on Sept. 17 vs. North Florida to break a nil-nil deadlock and send Denver to its seventh-straight win. Underwood s breakthrough (1:38) at No. 25 Rutgers (8/28) was Denver s secondfastest goal since 2004, behind a Scott DeVoss opener against Western Illinois in the 2015 Summit League Semifinals (1:20). DENVER S UNBEATEN STRETCHES Denver is currently on a 25-match regular season unbeaten streak dating back to Halloween Night, The Pioneers went unbeaten through the first 18 matches in 2015 for the first time since the 1989 season when the Pioneers started 20 matches unbeaten (19-0-1) marked the first time the Pioneers finished a Division I regular season unbeaten. In Franks first season in charge, the program reached new heights. The Pioneers were the only undefeated team in the country heading into the NCAA Tournament with a mark, earned an NCAA First Round bye for the first time in program history, booked the program s first trip into the second round and hosted its first-ever NCAA Tournament home game in Prior to the final poll released on December 15, Denver spent seven-straight weeks in the top-10 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, including two weeks spent at No. 7, the highest ranking in the program s history. With a focus on the team s defensive shape in his first year in charge, Franks squad allowed just eight goals in 2015, producing the second-best goals against average in the country (0.400), and had the second-best clean sheet rate in the country at Denver s defense allowed just 2.5 shots on goal in The only upperclassman in Denver s starting back four, Reagan Dunk became Denver s first NSCAA All-American (second team) and its first MAC Hermann Semifinalist. Dunk finished 30th in the country in assists with eight from his right back position. The 2015 season saw the Pioneers set new DI school marks in shutouts (12), consecutive shutouts (7), consecutive scoreless minutes (797) and consecutive unbeaten matches (18). In his three years as an assistant at DU, Franks primarily worked with the midfielders and forwards who amassed 110 goals in three seasons, ranking in the top 15 in the country in 2012 & His roles and responsibilities at the University of Denver included recruiting coordinator, budget manager, post game analysis of film, scouting, and assists in fundraising efforts. In addition, he worked closely with the implementation of all soccer related matters. Franks joined Pioneers after two years on staff with Wake Forest men s soccer team. Being apart of the Wake Forest soccer program both as a player and a coach from , , Franks was a part of one of the most decorated classes in college soccer history. He most recently played with the Rochester Rhinos in the USSF Division 2 Professional League before joining his alma mater to begin his coaching career. Franks ranks fifth all time for games played (95) for the Demon Deacons from , the first two of which Muuss served as assistant coach. Franks scored seven goals and 20 assists, helping lead Wake Forest to two ACC championships, three College Cups, including the 2007 national championship. After leaving Wake, Franks was selected by Chivas USA in the fourth round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. Prior to college, Franks played on the US U-18 National Team. After his first season of professional soccer in 2009, Franks joined the Wake Forest staff as the Director of Soccer Operations where he worked with media and film applications. During the 2009 season at Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons advanced to their fourth-consecutive College Cup. After a brief hiatus on staff at Wake Forest, he rejoined the in 2011 as the Volunteer Coach. His responsibilities focused on travel budget, alumni relations, social media, academic liaison, and alumni outreach. Franks graduated from Wake Forest in 2008 with a bachelor s degree in communication and successfully completed the Business Management Program at the Calloway School of Business. 5 CIBER FIELD CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium opened in The 2,000 seat stadium hosts both the men s and women s soccer programs, and sits above the 10,000 square-foot Pat Bowlen Strength and Conditioning Complex. The stadium has hosted the 2009 MPSF Men s Soccer Tournament, 2014 Summit League Men s and Women s Championships and 2015 Summit League Men s Championship. CIBER Field has also hosted the 2012 NCAA Women s Soccer First Round and 2015 NCAA Men s Soccer Second Round. Denver s men s program is at home since Jamie Franks joined the staff as an assistant in 2012 and since CIBER Field opened. FRANKS SET FOR SECOND SEASON IN CHARGE Former DU assistant and Wake Forest alum Jamie Franks took over the reins, officially inking his name as Denver s 10th head coach on Aug. 29, The Pioneers are since Franks arrival as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 2012 season. Combined as a college player and coach, Franks is , reaching four college cups and winning a National Championship in that span. Franks picked up his 150th collegiate win as a player/assistant/head coach on August 30, doing so prior to his 30th birthday. According to information submitted to the NCAA in 2015, Franks was the youngest DI head coach (29) a season ago SHUTOUT STREAK Prior to conceding the goal vs. SMU in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, Denver had a shutout streak of 795:58 and kept seven-straight clean sheets in that span. The shutout streak was the longest in Denver s Division I history (since 1998). DU s longest match stretch without allowing a goal is eight, a feat the Pioneers accomplished in the 1988 campaign. COLORADO PROUD Denver has 11 players from the state of Colorado, including five that started games for Denver a year ago...du s Colorado players have combined for 299 CAPS (7 players). 6 [8/13] DENVER 1-0 NORTH FLORIDA (SEPT. 17, 2016) ELDER S 87TH MINUTE STRIKE SENDS [8/13] DENVER PAST [RV/-] NORTH FLORIDA DENVER Redshirt-junior Blake Elder (Fort Worth, Texas) broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 87th minute with his fourth in four to extend [8/13] University of Denver men s soccer s win streak to seven with a 1-0 win over [RV/-] North Florida on Saturday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. It s a good sign of character and resilience from the group tonight to get a goal after it looked like it could just be one of those nights, head coach Jamie Franks said. We had chances that we normally put away, but the guys stayed the course and found the late winner. In the first half, Denver s (7-0-1) two sophomore internationals had the best chances of the opening 45. In the 18th minute Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) got a header off a redshirt-senior Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.) cross to the back post, but the sophomore s effort was just outside the post. On 37 minutes, Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) had a hit from just inside the 18 with North Florida keeper Juanes Fajardo getting back into his net after Sam Hamilton s (Evergreen, Colo.) run brought him out, but Akamatsu s try was also just wide. North Florida (3-2-1) and Denver had three shots, three fouls and two corners aside and neither keeper had to make a save in the opening 45 minutes. Denver continued to push in the second half, creating seven corner kicks and holding a 12-4 edge in shots in the second stanza. Substitute goalkeeper Tord Pedersen made six saves in the second 45, and UNF defender s cleared two balls off the line. Elder, now with a goal in four games on the spin, finished off a piece of brilliant build-up from Hamilton and Shinyashiki. The senior captain sprayed the ball out wide to the sophomore striker, who took a touch, played a sharp ground cross to a timed run from Elder to setup the point-blank finish. Saturday s assists were Hamilton and Shinyashiki s fifth each in I think if you looked at the first four games, Blake (Elder) was unlucky to not finish a few chances, Franks said. He continues to put himself in great spots and he s got the reward he s deserved from that during this homestand. With the win, Denver stretched its unbeaten run in regular season matches, which dates back to Halloween, 2014, to 25 matches. It s a testament to the guys, Franks said. They approach every game the same, and understand their positioning, work rate and mentality are the foundation of what we do. No matter the condition or circumstance, the guys have done their jobs extremely well.
