P.E. Supplement December 2014 plus lots more inside! HASSAN STEPS UP - and puts in a winning performance!

After a very successful season, Crown Hills Sport teams are back with a bang, already winning five East Leicester Champions Trophies. With still plenty of fixtures to go in the New Year, Crown Hills is positive that there are more success and trophies to come! - Mr Stretton Athletics Muhammed Hassan celebrated double Shot Put gold earlier this year after winning both the Leicestershire Disability Athletics Championships at Saffron Lane Stadium, and the DSE National Junior Championships in Coventry. In addition, at the latter event, the outstanding athlete also finished 3rd in the Javelin competition and qualified for the 100m final. His performances are even more remarkable given that he overcame personal tragedy during those medal winning months. Hassan s achievements have earned him a nomination for Young Disabled Sports Person of the Year. Boys Football It has been a very difficult start to the season for our Year 7 Boys football team. They have played four matches so far this season with games against Judgemeadow, City of Leicester, Soar Valley and Hamilton. They lost all four matches by large margins, 5-1, 7-2, 5-2 and Let s hope the boys can pick it up in their remaining games. Only one game has been played so far for our Year 8 boys. They played against a very strong City of Leicester side and were comprehensively beaten 8-1. Year 9 Boys currently sit in first place in their league following a win and a draw against Judgemeadow (6-3) and Rushey Mead (3-3) The Year 11 Boys have also been in action this season. They have played two games against Judgemeadow which they drew 1-1 and lost to Soar Valley 3-1. Girls Football Crown Hills put in two teams this year for girls football, Year 7 and Year 8/9. The year 7 team compete in a league consisting of three rounds at GOALS football centre. They played games against Judgemeadow, City of Leicester, St Pauls, and Soar Valley drawing games against St. Pauls and City of Leicester but unfortunately with four defeats in the other games and our girls finished bottom of the group but good first time experience for most of the girls. Our Year 8/9 team were hoping to replicate their previous success in the Year 7 competition last season, but unfortunately we could not get out of first gear as we were unable to fulfil all of our fixtures due to availability. Overall we lost 8 games, drew 2 and won 1. However most of these games were small goal margins and we were not out-played in any of the games. Table Tennis Boys The U-16 Boys Table tennis team missed out on East Leicester champion status finishing second in the league as Judgemeadow took 1st place. Our U-16s beat Hamilton, Judgemeadow B, Madani, Moat and Soar Valley. Unfortunately Judgemeadow A beat us and narrowly pipped Crown Hills to the championship. Some brilliant performances from our U-16s and a 2nd place is very commendable, and the boys should not feel too disheartened about the close finish. Success for our U-13 boys team as they powered to victory, winning six out of 7 games (drawing the other game) to become East Leicester Table Tennis Champions. They only conceded three points in the whole competition and thrashed five teams, 4-0. They progressed to the County Champions where they met some very high standard players and finished 8th. A great achievement from the boys.

Table Tennis Girls There has been more success for our Table Tennis Squad as the U-16 Girls Table Tennis team won their East Leicester competition after beating the only other team in the league, Moat College, 6-2. They now progress to the county stage at Knighton Table Tennis Club to compete against other team across the whole of Leicestershire representing East Leicester. Cricket Before we broke up for the summer holidays, our U-13 girls travelled to Moseley Cricket Ground in Birmingham to compete in the Regional Chance to Shine outdoor cricket competition following their victory in the county championships. They competed against other counties across the Midlands. The girls won one game scoring the winning runs in the final over but lost the other two which unfortunately meant that they did not progress to the finals. The girls enjoyed the day overall and they got to meet England Women Cricket stars Jenny Gunn and Danielle Wyatt. They also met Australian Women s Cricket player Megan Schutt, who was an overseas player for Nottinghamshire. Our U-13 Boys also travelled to Moseley for their Regional Chance to Compete Finals representing Leicestershire. The boys and the management team showed their professionalism by arriving at Moseley in their blazers, looking very sharp. The boys played in a similar format to the girls and they were successful in their group and knockout stages which earned them a final spot. Unfortunately, they were defeated by a strong Warwickshire side, but they were rewarded for their performances with new Slazenger cricket equipment for Crown Hills. An hour in the cricket nets at Crown Hills to practise your batting and bowling costs just 15 for the whole team! To book call

Cross Country A few Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls have been taking part in Cross Country races on Saturday mornings all over Leicestershire. We have only ever had 1 pupil participate in this event for the long time since I (Mr Stretton) have been here, so it was pleasing to take a handful of pupils to these big county events. The first race was at Groby Community College. We took 8 pupils from Years 7 and 8, and of those the best results were as follows: 5 x Year 7 boys: Abdulrahim Mohammed 28th out of 68 2 x Year 7 girls: Saniyah Sheikh 48th out of 59 1 x Year 8 boy : Umar Hansrot who ran against year 8&9 s Following the first race, the second race took place at Rutland Water and we took 18 students and the best race results were: 8 x Year 7 boys: Rakib Chowdhury 31st out of 66 2 x Year 7 girls: Saniyah Sheikh 45th out of 50 3 x Year 8 girls: Remiya Waldron 54th 5 x Year 8 boys: Sufiyan Khalifa 55th It was so pleasing to see so many pupils taking part. Then the weather turned colder and wetter and this meant that the third race at Lutterworth would be very muddy. We still took good numbers. The outstanding performances from our 11 runners were as follows: 7 x Year 7 boys: Best result Rakib Chowdhury 33rd out of 51 4 x Year 8 boys: Best result Safwan Sohel 45th This has been a great experience for our pupils as they are running against the best Cross Country runners in the whole of the County; considering that Cross Country has a low participation in this area, it was satisfying to be able to take a group of young students to represent Crown Hills. It has allowed them to demonstrate some of the key 7 C skills/qualities that we promote each day in school such as: Confidence to get involved in such a big event Commitment to attend these events on Saturday mornings Communication - as they are meeting and talking to people that they would not normally meet, and making new friends Special mention goes to the following students who have attended all of the races so far who are: Rakib Chowdhury, Tion Fortune, Mitesh Solanki, and Umar Hansrot. Keep up the good work boys! Abdulrahim Mohammed 28th Saniyah Sheikh 45th Rakib Chowdhury 31st

Year 8 girls basketball team pictured with the East Leicester trophy Basketball Our first trophy of the new academic year was won by our Year 7 boys Basketball team. On the 24th September, they travelled to Moat Community College to compete in the New Competitors Basketball competition. They played three games and were undefeated against Moat (4-2), St Pauls (12-4) and Hamilton (14-4) which earned the East Leicester Trophy and progress to the next round. Well done boys! Our success in boys basketball was replicated by the Year 8 girls as they were also crowned East Leicester Champions. They competed at Hamilton and they played games against Rushey Mead (10-4) and Hamilton (10-0). They also progress to the County competition in January at Rushey Mead representing East Leicester. The Year 7 girls team played against Moat and Sir Jonathan North in their New Competitors Competition but unfortunately lost both games. However, the game versus Moat was a very tight game losing by only two points. Good performances from the Year 7s and lots of positives to take from both games. Brilliant performances from all our basketball teams. Crown Hills has basketball courts available for hire at just 25 p/hr. Call to book NOW! Badminton Crown Hills KS4 Boys badminton squad continued their winning form from last season into this season with a 1st place finish in the East Leicester Centre Parcs Badminton League with crushing 5-0 defeats of Moat and Crown Hills B. They also fought back to beat Soar Valley 3-2 when they were 2-0 down after the first two games. Crown Hills B finished bottom of the league, losing all 3 games; but this Did you know that you can hire a badminton court at Crown Hills for just 10 an hour? (That s only 2.50 each if you play doubles!) was a team of mainly Year 8 boys playing against older and more experienced players, and all of our Year 8s would have gained valuable experience from this. We also had a large KS3 boys team that ensured two teams entered into the East Leicester league with our A team finishing 1st and our B team finishing 3rd. The A team were undefeated beating teams such as Moat twice (5-0 & 5-0), Crown Hills B (5-0), Soar Valley (5-0) and Judgemeadow (4-1). Our B team won one game out of three, beating Moat 3-2 but they lost to Crown Hills A and Soar Valley, 4-1. Crown Hills KS3 Boys B badminton team

Coming up in... In the New Year, we will see the return of Indoor Cricket to Crown Hills as our U-15 boys and U-15 girls get set to defend their East Leicester and County Championship titles. In addition, our U-13 boys and girls will compete for those trophies again, having missed out on the finals last season. Our Year 7 and Year 8 Netball teams will commence their season with three league rounds all taking place at Soar Valley College. There will be further Basketball, Badminton and Football matches taking place at various dates in the New Year. There will also be various other sporting fixtures as part of the Leicestershire School Games. Keep a lookout on the display boards for more information regarding fixtures and results.... y l l a n i f d n a The success we are achieving is down to the Staff and students hard work, commitment and dedication. I urge students to instil this in yourselves, and parents alike in your children, to ensure that students commit to practices and fixtures. This will help school staff by not having to chase pupils to check if they can play and pupils not turning up. We have had to concede some fixtures due to lack of commitment and communication from some of our students. It is a vital learning experience that the students gain when they belong to a team and the commitmentthat it involves. One person s lack of commitment can cause huge disruptions to the whole team. If you have made a commitment to a team, it is imperative that you do everything you can to keep that commitment. If you are unable to attend fixtures, it is YOUR responsibility to inform the member of staff involved. Do not ask a friend to tell staff and more importantly do not avoid speaking to staff. The amount of preparation that is involved with fixtures, especially away fixtures is very time consuming, and we cannot afford stdents to bail out at the last minute. Please keep up your commitment. A huge thank you to those students that do attend regularly and help to fulfil fixtures. Keep up the good work! Congratulations to all those that have competed so far and good luck to those that are set to compete in the New Year! #teamchcc Crown Hills Sport & Education Centre NOW OPEN!
