.. Running on sand Playing on sand is an acquired skill. Just moving on sand requires a lot of strength, coordination and balance. These aspects can be coached in simple warm-up games. Drill : Two teams play each other on a pitch with two goals. Passes may be played using hands only and goals scored only with headers. Possession is surrendered if the ball hits the ground. Players may not run with the ball. The focus is on fun and running without the ball. For a goal to be scored each member of the team must be in the opposition half. This introduces more movement into the game. 0 min.

.. Running on sand Drill : Two teams attempt to take the ball into the opposition zone. Passes must be played backwards using the hands. Players are allowed to run with the ball. The player with the ball can be forced to pass it within two seconds by being touched, however. The focus is on fun and running without the ball. For a point to be scored each member of the team must be in the opposition half. This introduces more movement into the game. 0 min.

.. Ball control on sand Players move the ball across the sand either walking or running. The unevenness of the sand makes it extremely dif cult to control the movement of the ball. Care must be taken to ensure the ball does not become stuck in a depression in the sand. Drill : Players are split into two equal groups and move the ball around. The ball should be moved with both feet and touched as often as possible. Lots of touches with both feet Upright body position and eyes looking forward Players are required to move the ball using the instep, outside of the foot, the sole or the toe end. () () 0 min.

.. Ball control on sand Drill : The pitch is divided in half. Each player moves a ball through the corresponding zone using his left or right foot (instep, outside of the foot, sole or toe end) according to the coach's instructions. Lots of touches with both feet Upright body position and eyes looking forward Players move the ball using the instep, the outside of the foot, the sole or the toe end only. 0 min.

.. Dribbling Dribbling refers to the movements of a player with the ball, with the aim of taking it past one or more opposition players. The technique is used to try to reach a better position for a pass or shot. It is frequently executed in combination with one or more feints. A feint is a deceptive movement with or without the ball. () () () Drill : Using feints, Player moves the ball through the cones () and then passes to Player (). Player passes to Player (). Player starts the drill again. The players take up the positions of the player they last played the ball to. Increase in pace after a feint. The player of the pass passively challenges the player on the ball. The player on the ball feints and dribbles past his opponent and then passes. 0 min.

.. Dribbling Drill : Player plays the ball to Player () and then challenges him immediately (). Player feints () and tries to dribble past his opponent before shooting (). Afterwards Player returns to Player 's starting position and assumes the attacker's role, Player rejoins the queue on the other side. To practice dribbling ef ciently, defenders should conduct themselves very passively in the early part of the drill. Increase in pace after a feint. Two teams are formed. The defenders actively challenge the players on the ball and the coach counts the number of goals scored. 8 .. Flicking the ball up off the sand Owing to the uneven playing surface the ball is often played in the air in beach soccer. One of the most important technical skills, therefore, involves icking the ball up off the sand. There are two techniques:. When standing Using the front part of the foot, the player pushes the ball forwards into the sand with a slight backward rotation. He slides his foot under the ball with the leg slightly bent and propels it out of the sand with a quick extended movement of the lower leg.. When running The player slides his foot under the rolling ball with the leg slightly bent and propels it out of the sand with a quick extended movement of the lower leg.

.. Flicking the ball up off the sand Drill : The players are split into groups of three. Player throws the ball to Player 's feet. Player icks the ball up into the air and plays it back. He then runs to Player and does the same again. After 0- ick-ups the players change position. Correct movement when icking up the ball Players and throw the ball into the sand before Player has arrived Flick-ups with the left and right foot () () () The players ick the ball up mid-run. 0 min.

.. Flicking the ball up off the sand Drill : The players are split into groups of four. Player icks the ball up and plays it to Player (). Player plays a one-two with Player (, ) and passes the ball to Player (). On completion of the drill the players take up the positions of the player they last passed to. () () () Correct movement when icking up the ball Accuracy and timing of passes (9) () (7) (8) () () The players ick the ball up mid-run. (0) 0 min.

.. Juggling Juggling refers to keeping the ball in the air using several touches (with one or more parts of the body). Drill : The players form pairs and are allocated marked zones by the coach. Each pair attempts to play the ball to each other while keeping it in the air. Much patience and practice is required to learn how to juggle the ball. The drills should be kept very simple in the beginning to ensure the players remain motivated and enjoy practising. The degree of dif culty can steadily be increased, if appropriate. The coach determines how many touches are allowed between passes and which parts of the body may be used to control and pass the ball. 0 Min. 90 Min.

.. Juggling Drill : The players are split into two equal groups. The red players each take a ball and spread out over half the pitch. The blue players run from point to point, receive the ball in the air, juggle it and then kick it back into the hands of the thrower. Upright body position Player concentration Accuracy of the passes Specify the number of touches allowed when juggling the ball Ball control and juggling using the foot, knee, thigh, chest, shoulder or head Return pass using the foot, knee, chest, shoulder or head 0 min.

.. Passing Passing serves the intention of playing the ball to a team-mate. This technical skill is usually executed with the foot. In addition, beach soccer often involves situations when the ball is passed using the knee, thigh, chest, shoulder or head. Depending on the situation, a pass can be played off the sand (cf...), after a ick-up (cf...) or rst-time in the air (cf...).

... Passing off the sand If the ball is on the sand when passed, care should be taken to ensure it is not in a depression. Kicking a ball that is stuck in the sand can be very painful and result in injury. Passing sequences on sand involving one-twos and running are useful for warming up and coaching technical and cognitive skills. Drill: Player passes the ball to Player () and overlaps him (). Player passes to Player (), who plays it back to the overlapping Player (). Player now passes to Player (). The game starts from the beginning again. Positions are changed after a couple of passing sets. (0) () () (9) () () () () (8) (7) Upright body position Standing leg next to the ball and slightly behind it Focus on target before passing Rhythm and timing of the passes Number of touches before passing 0 min.

... Passing after a ick up Players often ick the ball up off the sand in order to play a high pass. This movement requires a lot of technical skill and the ball has to be icked up off the sand correctly. Drill: Two players stand -0 m apart and pass the ball to each other. The ball must be icked up off the sand before each pass. Technically correct ick-ups (cf..) Precision over power when passing The ball is icked up from a standing position or mid-run after the player has knocked the ball in front of him. 0 min.

... The volleyed pass As mentioned above, beach soccer players often attempt to keep the ball in the air. When a player receives the ball in the air, it often makes sense to play it rst time to maintain the tempo of the game. The volleyed pass, then, is equally as important as the ick-up and should be practised regularly. This technical skill can be performed using all the parts of the body allowed in beach soccer, usually the foot, the thigh, the chest, the shoulder or the head. () () () Drill: The players are split into groups of three. Player runs around without the ball, has the ball thrown to him by Players and and volleys it straight back. After 0- volleys the players change position. Accuracy of thrown passes by Players and Precision over power when Player passes the ball back Player is required to control the ball rst (cf..0.) and then pass it back (two touches) Player passes the ball with his knee, chest, shoulder or head 0 min.

.7. Shooting Shooting serves the intention of scoring a goal. Shots can be taken off the sand (cf..7..), after a ick-up (cf..7..), from a free-kick (cf..7..) or rst time (cf..7..). The overhead kick and the horizontal bicycle kick (cf..8) are special types of shots. All these technical skills are normally executed with the foot. Going for goal with the head is explained in the chapter on heading (cf..9.).

.7.. Shooting off the sand To prevent injuries, care should be taken to ensure the ball is not in a depression in the sand before shooting. This is even more important than it is when passing the ball because in most cases more power is used when shooting and the risk of injury is therefore greater. Drill: The players are split into two equal groups. Player plays a precise pass off the sand to Player (), who after running with the ball for a few metres () nishes with a shot on goal off the sand (). Player assumes the position of Player. Ensure the ball is not in a depression when shooting Upright body position Standing leg next to the ball and slightly behind it Focus on target before shooting Precision over power () Specify the number of touches before shooting Require players to shoot with their left foot from the right and vice-versa () () 0 min.

.7.. Shooting after a ick up For powerful and accurate shooting players often ick the ball up beforehand. As with all moves involving icking the ball up off the sand, this is very challenging technically and requires a lot of regular practice. Drill: The players are split into two equal groups. Player plays a precise one-two with Player (, ) and icks the ball up before shooting (). Technically correct ick-ups (cf...) Body should be upright or leaning slightly forward when shooting The ball should be struck just before it bounces Precision over power when shooting () () The ball is icked up from a standing position or mid-run after the player has knocked the ball in front of him. () () 0 min.

.7.. The volleyed shot The rst-time nish is one of the most important skills for scoring goals in beach soccer. It is usually executed with the foot. From close range, however, players sometimes go for goal rst-time using the knee, thigh, chest, shoulder or head (cf..9). Drill: The players are split into two equal groups. Player plays a precise one-two with Player (, ) and nishes with a rst-time shot (). Body should be upright or leaning slightly forward when shooting The ball should be struck just before it bounces Precision over power when shooting If the players are not yet able to play precise, direct passes, Player can pass the ball on with his hands () () Player plays a double one-two in the air with Player (two one-twos in succession) () () 0 min.

.7.. Free-kicks The free-kick is a special type of shot. In beach soccer players are allowed to prepare the sand before a free-kick using their feet or the ball. They may not touch the sand with their hands, however. As no wall may be formed in beach soccer and distances are very short, a free-kick always constitutes an immediate threat on goal. Drill : All players grab a ball and take it in turns to take a free-kick on goal. Place the ball on a small elevation in the sand or in a large at area Upright body position Standing leg next to the ball and slightly behind it Focus on target before shooting Precision over power Vary the distance from the goal. 0 min.

.8. Overhead and horizontal bicycle kicks The overhead bicycle kick is the supreme skill in beach soccer. It is usually executed after the ball has been controlled on the chest or with the head or after being icked up by the player himself. Accomplished players can also execute the bicycle kick straight from a pass by the goalkeeper or a team-mate. The player jumps up, leans back through approx. 90 degrees and moves his weaker leg towards the ball. In a swinging, scissor-like move he drags this leg down again, throws up the outstretched leg of his stronger foot and strikes the ball with the top of the foot. When striking the ball the player should turn his body slightly towards the side of the weaker foot. The hand can be used to coordinate the landing but should not take the player's full weight due to the high attendant risk of injury. To execute a horizontal bicycle kick, the player jumps up and rotates his body to the side through approx. 90 degrees. When the ball is struck, the entire body is in the air and horizontal. On completion of the move the player drops to the sand on his side.

.8. Overhead and horizontal bicycle kicks Drill : The players are split into two equal groups. Player receives a high thrown pass () and attempts to strike the ball into the goal rst time with an overhead or horizontal bicycle kick (). If the pass is not accurate enough, the player can set himself up after controlling the ball or icking it up. On completion of the move Player rejoins the back of the queue and Player is given a pass for an overhead kick. () Accuracy and timing of passes. () If the player is not familiar with this technical skill, he can throw the ball up himself before attempting an overhead or horizontal bicycle kick Good drill for children 0 min.

.8. Overhead and horizontal bicycle kicks Drill : The players are split into two equal groups. The drill begins with a long throw out by the goalkeeper to Player (). Player controls the ball and then plays it to Player (). Player now runs towards the goal and receives a high pass just behind him (). He goes for goal with an overhead or horizontal bicycle kick (). Left and right-footed players should be divided into groups; this is because the degree of dif culty of the overhead or horizontal bicycle increases substantially if the pass arrives on the side of the player's weaker foot If the players are not yet able to play precise, direct passes, Player can pass the ball on with his hands Player and Player play a double one-two. () () () () () 0 min.

.9. Heading When heading the player strikes the ball with his forehead and conveys it towards the goal or to a team-mate. Players must possess strong technical and coordination skills. Drill : The players are split into three groups of equal size and form queues. Player heads the ball to Player and takes up a position behind Player. Player in turn heads the ball to Player and takes up a position behind him. The drill can continue for as long as required. The ball should be struck with the forehead The body should be fully tensed before the ball is headed Eyes open on contact with the ball The ball can be controlled rst with the head before being headed on (two touches). 0 min.

.9. Heading Drill : Player receives the ball on his head from Player by way of a corner () and nishes (). He then changes sides and receives the ball from Player. The players change positions after 0 headers. The ball should be struck with the forehead The body should be fully tensed before the ball is headed Eyes open on contact with the ball () () () The attacker attempts a diving header. Player plays the ball low over the sand to Player, who dives towards the ball and heads it as he falls. 0 min.

.0. Ball control Ball control refers to the technique of stopping the ball in the air or on the sand and bringing it under control on receipt of a pass from a team-mate, for example. The move can be executed with several parts of the body (foot, thigh, chest, etc.) and requires good technical ability, coordination and balance. It should also be noted that judging the ight of the ball and keeping your balance is much more dif cult on sand. () () () Drill : The players are split into groups of three. Player has the ball thrown to him by Player, controls it and plays it straight back (). He then changes sides () and collects a pass from Player (). The distance between Player and the other two players should be - metres. After 0- repetitions the players change position. Accuracy of thrown passes by Players and. Ball control using the foot, thigh, chest, shoulder or head. Combinations hereof are also possible. 0 min.

.0. Ball control Drill : The players are split into two equal groups. Player (blue) runs towards the opposite goal () and receives the ball () from Goalkeeper (blue). He controls the ball and plays it () to Goalkeeper (red), who throws a long ball out () to the advancing () Player (red). After controlling it Player plays the ball to the goalkeeper (). On completion of the move the players rejoin the queue on the other side. The aim of the drill is to keep the ball in the air at all times. () Precise and well timed thrown passes by the goalkeeper. The coach speci es how the ball is to be played by the goalkeeper and controlled by the out eld players. () () () () () 0 min.

.. Tackling Tackling refers to the attempt by a defending player to take the ball off an opponent. It is important that tackles are executed without a foul being committed (cf. Law ). The defender should also remain on his feet for as long as possible. Getting up again after going to ground costs a lot of time and energy. () () Drill : The players form pairs and are allocated marked zones by the coach. Attacker attempts to move the ball into Defender 's zone while staying within the marked area (). The defender attempts to take the ball off the attacker by tackling him. The main focus of this drill is on the defender Lateral position of the defender to the striker Body shape: knees slightly bent, weight on the front part of the foot The defender attempts to match the attacker's pace and shepherd him onto his weaker foot to make it more dif cult for him to shoot with his stronger foot Determination of the defender to win the tackle by fair means The coach introduces small goals and counts the number of goals scored. 0 min.

.. Tackling Drill : Player plays the ball to Player () and then challenges him immediately (). Player launches an attack on goal (), Player attempts to take the ball off him by tackling him. The main focus of this drill is on the defender Lateral position of the defender to the striker Body shape: knees slightly bent, weight on the front part of the foot The defender attempts to match the attacker's pace and shepherd him onto his weaker foot to make it more dif cult for him to shoot with his stronger foot Determination of the defender to win the tackle by fair means The coach organises the drill in the form of a game and awards points for every successful defensive action. () () () 0 min.

.. Interceptions Intercepting is when a player attempts to anticipate an opponent's pass to a team-mate and cut it out to prevent it reaching said team-mate. Again, care should be taken not to foul the opponent (cf. Law ). Drill : The players are split into groups of three. Player throws the ball to Player (). Player is standing behind Player when the ball is thrown and attempts to reach the ball () before Player can control it. The interception should be executed without any body contact, if possible. Anticipating the throw-out and the ight of the ball Watching the striker's run at all times Determination in the tackle Increase the distance, e.g. across the length of the pitch. () () 0 min.

.. Interceptions Drill : Goalkeeper throws the ball out to Attacker (). Defender attempts to intercept the ball (), bring it under control and go for goal (, ). Anticipating the throw-out and the ight of the ball Watching the striker's run at all times Determination to cut the ball out and win possession Five against ve in which the goalkeepers are obliged to start the game with a long throw out to the strikers each time.
