1 VOL. XIII; NO. 1 Packers Public Relations Lambeau Field Atrium 1265 Lombardi Avenue Green Bay, WI / / fax Aaron Popkey, Sarah Quick, Jonathan Butnick, Tom Fanning 2011 SCHEDULE RELEASED The Green Bay Packers 91st NFL regular-season schedule headlined by four prime-time games as well as a nationally televised Thanksgiving contest was released early this evening by the National Football League. Though the 2011 opponents have been known since the end of last season, the arrival of the complete NFL schedule is a day circled on the calendar of all football fans. Green Bay will begin the defense of its Super Bowl XLV title at home against the New Orleans Saints in a Thursday night contest on Sept. 8. The matchup of the last two Super Bowl winners will mark the first time in franchise history that the Packers will open the season on a Thursday night. It will also be just the third Thursday night game in Lambeau Field history. The Packers will head out on the road in Week 2 to take on Carolina, the first of back-to-back road games for Green Bay. It is the second straight season that Green Bay has played two contests away from Lambeau Field in the first three weeks. For the second straight season, the Packers will visit Soldier Field in Week 3 to take on the Chicago Bears, a rematch of the 2010 NFC Championship Game. Green Bay will face another 2010 playoff foe in Week 5 when it travels to Atlanta for a Sunday night contest against the Falcons on NBC. It will be the Packers third game against an NFC South opponent in the first five weeks. The Packers will host Minnesota in Week 10 on ESPN s Monday Night Football marks the 19th consecutive season the Packers have appeared on MNF, the NFC's longest streak (Denver, 20). For the third time in Head Coach Mike McCarthy s tenure, the Packers will travel to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day matchup. Green Bay won the previous two Thanksgiving meetings (2007, 2009) under McCarthy. With the MNF game against Minnesota and the Thanksgiving game at Detroit, the Packers will have three games in an 11-day span. Green Bay has some recent experience with a stretch similar to that, having played three contests in 12 days in 2009 (Nov ). Both of the Packers December road games will be played outdoors in potential cold-weather conditions with visits to the N.Y. Giants (Week 13) and the Kansas City Chiefs (Week 15). Green Bay finishes the regular season with back-to-back home contests (Chicago, Detroit) for the second straight season. The only other time the Packers have finished with two home games in consecutive seasons was For just the second time in franchise annals, the Packers will play on Christmas. Green Bay will host Chicago in prime time on NBC. The only other Christmas game in Packers history also came against the Bears (2005) at Lambeau Field. The Packers will be the first NFL team to play on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year s Day in the same season, with all three games coming against divisional foes. Green Bay closes against an NFC North opponent for the fifth time in the past six seasons, this time against Detroit. Dates and times for the Packers preseason games also were finalized on Tuesday. AT FIRST GLANCE Green Bay s bye week arrives in Week 8, the second time the Packers have had their bye that week under McCarthy (2008) SCHEDULE The Packers go into (at Minnesota) and come out of the bye (at San Diego) on the road for the first time since Under McCarthy, the team has won four of five games immediately after the bye week and 11 of its last 15 after the week off dating back further. Overall, the Packers are (.612) after the bye under McCarthy, and since 2000, the team is (.629) following the week off. Thirteen games are slated for Sunday this season, with two Thursday night contests and one on Monday night. Only six games are scheduled for noon (CT) starts with five games currently slated for 3:15 p.m. (CT). The Packers have five games on the schedule against 2010 playoff teams, beginning right away in Week 1 vs. New Orleans. The other matchups come against Chicago (Weeks 3 and 16), Atlanta (Week 5), and Kansas City (Week 15). Green Bay (No. 9 offense, No. 5 defense) was one of just four NFL teams to finish in the top 10 in both total offense and defense in The Packers play all three of the other teams in 2011, hosting New Orleans (No. 6/No. 4) in Week 1 and traveling to take on San Diego (No. 1/No. 1) in Week 9 and the N.Y. Giants (No. 5/No. 7) in Week 13. 2 293 AND COUNTING Another packed house at Lambeau Field against the Bears in the 2010 regular-season finale brought the stadium s consecutive-sellouts streak to 293 games (277 regular season, 16 playoffs). The Week 7 crowd of 71,107 vs. Minnesota in 2010 was the third-largest regular-season crowd in Lambeau Field history. The league s longest-tenured stadium, Lambeau Field will be hosting its 55th season of football this year. A total of 566,362 fans made their way through the turnstiles in the eight home contests in Across American professional sports, only Boston s Fenway Park (1912) and Chicago s Wrigley Field (1914) have longer tenures. THE LAMBEAU ADVANTAGE The crown jewel of the National Football League, Lambeau Field has long been known as one of the tougher venues to play in, particularly during the harsh Wisconsin winter. Re-establishing home-field advantage after a 4-4 mark in 2008 was one of the goals of 2009, and with the Packers finishing 6-2 at home, they accomplished that goal. Green Bay followed that up with a 7-1 mark at Lambeau Field in Head Coach Mike McCarthy stated consistently upon his arrival in Green Bay that one of the team s goals would be to reclaim the mystique of playing at Lambeau Field. Mission accomplished. The team is 26-8 (.765) over the past 34 regular-season games, the best regular-season home mark in the NFC over that span. Since Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren began the revitalization of the franchise in 1992, Green Bay owns the best home record in the NFL. A look at the top regular-season home W-L records since the 92 season: Team W-L record Pct. Green Bay Pittsburgh Denver Minnesota New England KICKING THINGS OFF AT HOME For the fifth time in six seasons under Head Coach Mike McCarthy, Green Bay will start the season in front of the home crowd at Lambeau Field when it hosts the New Orleans Saints in a Thursday night contest on Sept. 8. It will mark the third time in the past four seasons that the Packers have opened the season in a nationally televised prime-time contest at home. In 2008, Green Bay hosted Minnesota on Monday Night Football, while in 2009, the Packers played host to Chicago in a Sunday night contest. Lambeau openers have become near habit for the Packers, as 30 of 41 regular-season openers since the AFL-NFL merger ( ) came at Lambeau Field. The Packers have won four straight season openers overall ( ), the first time since that the team emerged victorious in four consecutive opening games. The Packers are the only team in the NFC to win their season opener each of the last four years, joining New England and Pittsburgh as the only teams in the NFL to accomplish the feat over that span. McCarthy is the first Green Bay head coach to win four consecutive season openers since Bart Starr did so from Green Bay s early-season success hasn t been limited to Lambeau Field under McCarthy. The Packers have won their opening road contest in each of the five seasons McCarthy has been at the helm. Green Bay is the only team in the NFL to win its opening road contest each of the past five seasons ( ). Since McCarthy took over in 2006, the Packers have an 11-6 (.647) mark in the month of September. That record is tied for No. 5 in the NFL over that span OPPONENTS STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE The Packers 2011 schedule includes five games against 2010 playoff teams. Two of those games (Chicago, New Orleans) will be at Lambeau Field, while the three other contests (Chicago, Atlanta, Kansas City) will come on the road. Including its six games against division opponents, Green Bay also will face two opponents, Atlanta and the N.Y. Giants, that it played against in Of the 13 opponents on the Packers schedule, eight of them posted records of.500 or better in The Packers will play the four teams from the AFC West for the first time since 2007 while also playing the teams from the NFC South for the second time in the past four seasons (2008). Green Bay will be making its first trip to San Diego since 2003, while Denver will visit Lambeau Field for the first time since 03. 4 WITH THE 32ND PICK IN THE 2010 NFL DRAFT... Next week, the Green Bay Packers will welcome another rookie class to their roster through the NFL Draft, held April at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Armed with seven of their own selections - plus a fourth-round compensatory selection and a seventh-round choice from Carolina - the Packers will have plenty of opportunities to add more talent and depth to their roster. All picks are eligible to be traded except for the compensatory selection. For the second straight year, the event will begin in prime time on Thursday night, with Round 1 on April 28 starting at 7 p.m. CST. Rounds 2-3 also will be held in prime time, beginning on Friday, April 29, at 5 p.m. CST. Rounds 4-7 will complete the draft on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. The time allotted in between picks will remain the same. Teams will have 10 minutes in between selections in the first round and seven minutes between each choice for Round 2. Each subsequent round will allow up to five minutes in between picks. A look at where Green Bay currently stands in the draft order: Round Round # Overall # (compensatory) (from Carolina) IN THE PRESEASON Highlighted by a game at Indianapolis in front of a national TV audience, Green Bay s preseason opponents were announced on April 12 and the dates and times were finalized on Tuesday. The Packers open the preseason against the Cleveland Browns for the third straight year, this time at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Aug. 13. The preseason meetings between the teams the past two years were at Lambeau Field, and this will be Green Bay s first preseason trip to Cleveland since On Aug. 19, Green Bay will host the Arizona Cardinals. This will be the Cardinals first preseason visit to Lambeau Field since 1978, when the team was based in St. Louis. The game is designated as the 62nd annual Upper Midwest Shrine Game, a tradition which began in 1950 and has raised more than $3.1 million for the Midwest Shrine s burn centers and hospitals for crippled children. The Packers have won nine of the last 12 in the Shrine series. CBS will broadcast the Colts contest on Aug. 26 to a national TV audience, the Packers first-ever game at Lucas Oil Stadium and their first preseason trip to Indianapolis since This is the second straight year that Indianapolis and Green Bay have squared off in the preseason on national TV. Over the past 19 preseasons, the Packers have appeared on national TV at least once in 18 of those years. The preseason concludes with a home contest against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 1, the second straight year the teams have met in the preseason finale. The Packers last hosted the Chiefs in a preseason contest in Green Bay in Also, the Kansas City game marks the 51st annual Bishop s Charities Game, a charitable contest initiated in 1961 by Vince Lombardi and the Diocese of Green Bay that has raised more than $3.4 million to date. FINAL THOUGHTS ON 2010 Green Bay capped off an impressive postseason run with a victory in Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Packers 13th world championship and fourth Super Bowl title. Green Bay has won more championships than any other team in NFL history, with the Chicago Bears (nine) and N.Y. Giants (seven) checking in behind the Packers. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers led the offense with 304 passing yards and three TDs on his way to earning Super Bowl MVP honors, while the defense forced three turnovers that led to 21 points in Green Bay s victory over the Steelers. Repeating a theme that had been present throughout the season, the Packers had to overcome some adversity in Super Bowl XLV as a pair of veteran leaders, WR Donald Driver and CB Charles Woodson, were lost for the game due to injuries sustained in the first half. Facing challenges was nothing new for a Packers team that saw 15 players land on injured reserve during the season and sat at 3-3 following back-to-back overtime losses to Washington and Miami in October. Much like in 2009 when the Packers finished the season with seven wins in the final eight games to secure a playoff berth, Green Bay rattled off seven victories in its final 10 regular-season contests to earn a spot in the postseason. That was highlighted by back-to-back home victories over the N.Y. Giants and Bears at Lambeau Field in Weeks that the Packers had to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. Those late-season challenges paid dividends in the postseason when the Packers won three consecutive road games to advance to the Super Bowl in North Texas. With the win over Pittsburgh at Cowboys Stadium, the Packers became just the second No. 6 seed to win a world championship since the NFL went to a 12-team playoff format in They were the first NFC team to accomplish the feat, with the 2005 Steelers the only other NFL team to do so. 5 Thursday, Sept. 8, vs. New Orleans, 7:30 p.m., NBC The winners of the past two Super Bowls square off at Lambeau Field, the first time in franchise history that the Packers have opened the season on a Thursday night. Green Bay is 5-0 all-time in prime-time openers (four on Monday night, one on Sunday night). This will be the second time in franchise history that the Packers have opened the season against the Saints. Green Bay traveled to New Orleans for the 1977 season opener. The Saints will be making their fourth trip to Green Bay in franchise history (the teams played seven times in Milwaukee from ). It will be a matchup of the only two teams in the league to have top-10 offenses each of the past five seasons. Head Coach Mike McCarthy served as the offensive coordinator in New Orleans for five seasons ( ). Sunday, Sept. 18, at Carolina Panthers, 12 p.m., FOX Green Bay makes its first trip to Charlotte since 2005, the third straight season that the Packers first road contest comes against a team outside of the NFC North. Green Bay is 5-0 in its first road contest of the season under McCarthy. The Packers and Panthers have met six times before in Carolina, with Green Bay winning four of those contests. Green Bay played its first road game in 2004 at Carolina, opening the season there against the Panthers. Green Bay advanced to Super Bowl XXXI with a win over Carolina at Lambeau Field in the 1996 NFC Championship Game. The Panthers were coached then by current Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers, Carolina s first head coach in franchise history. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Chicago Bears, 3:15 p.m., FOX Green Bay visits Chicago in Week 3 for the second straight season in a rematch of the 2010 NFC Championship Game. This will mark the third game between the teams in 2011 as the Packers hosted the Bears on Jan. 2 in the regular-season finale and traveled to Chicago on Jan. 23 for the NFC title contest. Sept. 25 is the earliest the Packers have visited Chicago since they took on the Bears at Soldier Field on Sept. 11, For the first time in the history of the series, the teams will square off in Chicago in the month of September in consecutive seasons. The NFL s oldest rivalry marks Game No. 184 in the all-time series. The teams have split the season series two of the past three years (Packers swept the series in 2009). Sunday, Oct. 2, vs. Denver Broncos, 3:15 p.m., CBS The Broncos make their first trip to Lambeau Field since It will be just the second meeting between the teams in Green Bay since they met in Super Bowl XXXII. Denver has visited Green Bay just three times before (two additional meetings in Milwaukee), and the Packers have won all three contests between the franchises at Lambeau Field. Oct. 2 is the earliest the Broncos have visited Lambeau Field, besting the previous mark (Oct. 10, 1993). This will be the first meeting between the teams since they squared off on Monday Night Football on Oct. 29, 2007, in Denver. The Packers won that contest in overtime, 19-13, on WR Greg Jennings 82-yard touchdown reception on the opening play from scrimmage in the extra period. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Atlanta Falcons, 7:20 p.m., NBC The teams meet for the second straight season at the Georgia Dome, the first time Green Bay has visited Atlanta in consecutive seasons since While this is the second regular-season visit to Atlanta in two years, it marks just the third trip to the city for Green Bay since This will be just the second time in franchise history that the teams have met in prime time during the regular season. The only other prime-time contest came on Monday Night Football in Atlanta on Nov. 22, The all-time regular-season series is dead even at , but the Packers have emerged victorious in two of the three postseason meetings. That includes Green Bay s victory last season in a Divisional playoff contest, with the 48 points setting a franchise postseason record. The Falcons have a 13-3 (.813) regular-season record at the Georgia Dome over the past two seasons, which is tied with the Packers for the best home mark in the NFC over that span. Sunday, Oct. 16, vs. St. Louis Rams, 12 p.m., FOX The teams meet for the fourth time in the past six seasons and for the first time at Lambeau Field since Green Bay has won three of the last four matchups with the Rams, including wins at St. Louis in 2007 and Each of the Rams last two visits to Lambeau Field have been in the month of October, with the last meeting between the teams in Green Bay coming in Week 5 of 2006 (Oct. 8). This will be the 90th regular-season meeting between the teams, which ranks No. 4 for for Green Bay for most games against a single opponent behind only division foes Chicago, Detroit and Minnesota. The Packers and Rams met for the first time in Sunday, Oct. 23, at Minnesota Vikings, 3:15 p.m., FOX For the second straight season, the border rivals meet for the first time in Week 7. The Week 7 matchup in 2010 was at Lambeau Field, with Green Bay emerging victorious, The Packers stand at all-time in the state of Minnesota, including a mark at the Metrodome. The Packers swept the season series in 2010, the first time they had done so since The Packers beat the Vikings, 31-3, at the Metrodome in The three points allowed by Green Bay matched the franchise record for the fewest points ever given up at Minnesota in the 50-year history of the series (Nov. 14, 1971). Sunday, Nov. 6, at San Diego Chargers, 3:15 p.m., FOX Green Bay visits San Diego for the first time since 2003 and for just the second time in the past 12 seasons. This will mark just the 10th matchup between the teams. The Packers hold an advantage in the all-time series, and have won five straight against the Chargers. San Diego ranked No. 1 in the NFL in both total offense and total defense in 2010, becoming just the fifth team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger to lead the league in both categories. The game will be a matchup of the two highest-rated passers in NFL history with Green Bay s Aaron Rodgers (98.4) and San Diego s Philip Rivers (97.2) squaring off. 55

6 Monday, Nov. 14, Minnesota Vikings, 7:30 p.m., ESPN The Packers and Vikings square off in prime time for the sixth time in the past seven seasons. The game marks Green Bay s lone appearance on Monday Night Football in It is the 19th consecutive season the Packers will play on MNF, the NFC s longest streak (Denver, 20). For the third straight season, the two Packers-Vikings matchups will come less than a month apart from each other. Few rivalries have displayed as much parity as Packers-Vikings, with Green Bay holding a advantage in the all-time series. Not only is the all-time series close, but 14 of the past 16 regular-season games have been decided by seven points or less. *Sunday, Nov. 20, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 12 p.m., FOX The former NFC Central rivals visit Lambeau Field for just the second time this decade. The teams last squared off in Green Bay in 2005, the lone meeting between the Packers and Buccaneers at Lambeau Field since the NFL realigned to eight divisions in Green Bay holds a edge in the all-time series, but Tampa Bay has won each of the last three meetings. This wraps up the Packers slate of NFC South games, with the other three contests (New Orleans, Carolina, Atlanta) all coming in the first five weeks of the season. Thursday, Nov. 24, at Detroit Lions, 11:30 a.m., FOX Green Bay will open its home-and-home series against the Lions on Thanksgiving Day at Ford Field, where it is 4-1 under McCarthy. This will mark the 34th Thanksgiving Day game in franchise history and the third under McCarthy. Green Bay has won the prior two Thanksgiving contests in Detroit (2007, 2009) during his tenure. The Packers all-time mark on Thanksgiving Day is , but Green Bay has won four of its past six games on the holiday. While their all-time mark in the city is below.500 ( ), the Packers are 6-3 at Ford Field, which opened in McCarthy s first NFL win as as head coach came at Detroit, a victory on Sept. 24, *Sunday, Dec. 4, at New York Giants, 3:15 p.m., FOX The Packers and Giants square off in the regular season for the second straight year, the first time the franchises have done so since This will be only the second time in the last decade that the Giants have hosted the Packers. The last time Green Bay visited the Giants this late in a season came on Jan. 6, 2002, when the Packers traveled to New York for the season finale in a game that was originally scheduled for Week 2 but was moved due to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, Green Bay s win last season over the Giants in Week 16 at Lambeau Field was the start of a six-game winning streak that culminated with a Super Bowl XLV win over Pittsburgh. This marks the second straight season that the Packers will play at New Meadowlands Stadium. In 2010, Green Bay topped the N.Y. Jets, 9-0, in Week 8 in the debut season of the stadium. *Sunday, Dec. 11, Oakland Raiders, 12 p.m., CBS The Raiders visit Lambeau Field for just the second time in the past 12 seasons. Oakland s last trip to Green Bay (2007) also came in Week 14. Four of the last five meetings between the teams have come in the month of December. The Raiders will be making their seventh trip to Lambeau Field in their franchise history, with the teams splitting the previous six meetings in Green Bay. The all-time regular-season series is deadlocked at Green Bay topped Oakland, 33-14, in Super Bowl II in Miami. The series has been marked by streaks as the Packers enter the game on a five-game winning streak against the Raiders. Prior to that, Oakland had won five in a row against Green Bay. *Sunday, Dec. 18, at Kansas City Chiefs, 12 p.m., FOX The Packers visit Kansas City for the first time since 2007 and for just the second time in the past 15 seasons. This will be the latest the Packers have ever traveled to Kansas City, besting the previous mark of Nov. 22, The game marks the second of back-to-back contests for the Packers against teams from the AFC West. This contest is one of four for Green Bay against division winners from 2010 (Atlanta, Chicago twice). McCarthy broke into the NFL coaching ranks with the Chiefs in 1993, and spent six seasons on Kansas City s staff ( ). Sunday, Dec. 25, Chicago Bears, 7:20 p.m., NBC For only the second time in franchise history, the Packers will play on Christmas. Ironically, the previous Christmas game was also against the Bears at Lambeau Field in The matchup marks the sixth straight season that the longtime rivals will square off in prime time. The last time the teams met in December or later in back-to-back seasons at Lambeau Field was Green Bay hosted Chicago in the 2010 season finale. The Packers have won three straight games against the Bears at Lambeau Field, the first time they have done so since *Sunday, Jan. 1, Detroit Lions, 12 p.m., FOX This marks the third time in the past five seasons that the Packers have hosted Detroit in the season finale. The Packers will play on New Year s Day in the regular season for just the second time in franchise history (Jan. 1, 2006, vs. Seattle). Under McCarthy, the Packers are 9-1 against Detroit. Dating back even further, Green Bay has won 19 consecutive regular-season games over the Lions in the state of Wisconsin. That 19-game home winning streak is the longest in the NFL. Including a 1994 playoff victory, the Packers have won 20 straight over the Lions in the state. Rodgers has thrown 14 TD passes against Detroit, his most against any opponent, and just four interceptions for a career passer rating in six games against the Lions. * Start time and broadcast may shift due to NFL flexible scheduling 6
