15 Post Game Quotes Saturday, August 19, 2006 DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN General I thought we had a great effort tonight. We talked about improving in our turnover battle. Last week we lost three turnovers on offense, and this week we were able to have none. That s when you have a good chance for things to happen. We were 0-for-4 in the red zone [vs. Detroit], then tonight we went 4-for-4 in the red zone, so we made some strides in that area. Defensively we came up with one turnover, and almost came up with two. I just take my hat off to the guys they were ready to play and made some good effort. We had a chance to evaluate a lot of players. We had some guys that that are competing very hard, and are very close in a lot different positions, and that s what you want. You want some depth and I think we saw some today. It was nice to see [DT] Demetrin Veal get a couple sacks in there. I thought [DE] Kennard [Lang] put a little pressure on the quarterback as well, and that s always nice to see with a few of your guys out. Regarding RB Mike Bell s Improvement Over Last Week in Detroit Like I shared with the guys before, games aren t always an indication of how somebody s going to do from one week to the next. I knew he was going to play well. He always plays pretty consistently. I think what you re trying to do is eliminate the turnovers, eliminate the fumbles from these guys trying to strip the ball. I was pleased with his effort. I thought he ran hard and I thought he got a number of yards after the contact, and I was impressed with the way he responded. On LB Al Wilson and CB Champ Bailey Not Playing Tonight What happened is we have a team rule for curfew. They missed curfew, and if you miss curfew you don t play. You don t start, and that s why they didn t suit up today. On QB Jake Plummer s Quiet Rise in Performance Level Not quietly from my stand point. He s play pretty well. He executed the offense very well, and the only thing I told him down on the two yard line was throw that ball away if it s not there, or get in there and slide early. You don t want him to take a shot if he doesn t have to. He threw the ball well, nice to throw the ball like that, get a couple of big first downs when we need them. On WR Javon Walker s Performance I thought it was good. We put him in there to try to get him to catch a ball and he kind of rolled up and caught a rotation. I think he felt good. He was very anxious to catch a ball. We re disappointed he didn t catch a ball. Maybe he will next week. The Depth at Running Backs We ve got some competition [among the running backs]. This is about evaluation over a whole camp, not just this game, so that s a good problem to have. We like depth and we like guys playing hard. I thought we saw a number of guys playing hard today, not only at the running back position but at a lot of positions.

We moved the ball well, guys made some big plays. That s what you want out of preseason game. We ve got one next week, we ll go out there and try to get even better. Comparing his Performance to this Time Last Year Well, just being through the system a whole year and the offseason, going back and evaluating the good and the things I can improve on. The little tweaks we ve made we didn t do anything too complicated out there. It s just that what we were doing was working and when we run the ball well it opens up a few things. On Broncos Fans Becoming Familiar with Unknown Receivers Obviously #80 [WR Rod Smith] came back and did his thing, I mean Rod s as good as they get. I know I can throw the ball to him, but seeing a guy like [WR David] Kircus step up, or like [TE] Nate [Jackson] stepping up on a big fourth down, that s always nice. You know, I would like to get the ball to [WR] Javon [Walker], but the calls that were called tonight, the plays were designed not to go exactly his way. We didn t get the looks to go his way, and that s what we have another preseason game for. Guys are working hard, that s all you can ask. On RB Mike Bell s Performance He s running hard. He got an earful for running out of bounds on that play [2 nd quarter], so I don t think we ll see him do that anymore. He s ran hard, he ran over a guy at one point when I saw him. He s a good kid, he s gonna run the ball hard. All those guys right now, both Bells [RB Tatum Bell] ran well. [RB] Cedric [Cobbs] and [RB] Damien [Nash] came in and they looked hungry too. QUARTERBACK JAY CUTLER On his Performance I was feeling good, I mean we had some good drives, threw it around a little bit and ran out some of the clock in the third quarter. Offensively, we did really well tonight as a whole team. On Connecting with TE Tony Scheffler We had some plays in there where he was one of the main targets. It s hard to miss him, he s a big target out there, and I know he s going to catch the ball. As a young quarterback, throwing to your tight end, you have to feel comfortable doing that. [On the touchdown throw to Scheffler:] I didn t know it was going to happen. He s going to the flat, and he s got to beat that corner to the corner of the end zone. I wasn t sure how it was going to work out, but Tony got open and I put it up high for him, and he was able to get it in. On Whether the Game is Getting Faster for him We saw a lot of the same stuff we saw last week. We saw a couple coverages and a couple of new coverages, but it s still pretty basic stuff. Did his Comfort Level Increase Since Week 1 of Preseason? It s getting there. The first team offense went out there and gave us a hell of a lift, and made things easy on us. Are you Seeing More Complicated Defenses in Practice? Yes, definitely. The staff, and the defense that we have, you see some guys out there flying around and giving us some defensive looks that we re not going to be able to duplicate in a game, and our first-team defense is one of the best in the league. I m going against them day in and day out makes games a lot easier. On What he Could have Improved Tonight I missed a few throws, and Coach Shanahan told me about it before halftime. I don t know, I think I did alright, and I ll have to look at the film. I m sure there are a few things that I ve missed. I missed one check on a blitz, but those things happen.

18 Post Game Quotes Saturday, August 19, 2006 TENNESSEE TITANS COACH JEFF FISHER General All I can say about tonight s performance is I m glad it was preseason. We ve got a lot of work to do. We played a really good team tonight and didn t do a good job of matching up. I saw some good things but it was disappointing overall. On Defending Bronco QB Jake Plummer (specifically bootlegs) We spent a lot of time trying to defend what they were doing. We tried to correct it more in the second half and didn t do much. I think a lot has to be corrected. On Bronco QB Jay Cutler He s a stud. He did some things tonight that he also did last week. He was impressive. He did a good job running the offense and he sees well. On Titan QB Vince Young I think on his run, he caught them by surprise a little bit, but he definitely needs to get down more. When he gets a chance to get in, he s gonna get in. He s one of those players who ll run when he gets the chance to. He handled some concepts well and he knew where to go with the football. On Penalties I think guys start pressing and get frustrated. Those types of things happen in the preseason. We had a lot of penalties we shouldn t have had. We really need to bounce back and move the ball down the field. We still have some time, it s good to have this game to let us know where we re at. ON DENVER QB JAY CUTLER I was impressed with his play. He had a lot of time to throw the ball and he was very accurate. ON THE STATE OF THE TITANS We had a good practice in the stadium on Thursday. We had guys really competing. This needs to stop right now. We need to make a lot of corrections and move forward. RB LenDale White ON BEING BACK HOME It feels great to be back here. I had a lot of people out there, a lot of family members. It felt great to be back in action in front of a lot of people I know. IS IT LIKE LIVING A DREAM, COMING BACK TO DENVER AND PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY Definitely. I lived here, and it always crossed my mind when I drove by Mile High. My grandma, being a Bronco fan and all, always wanted me to play here. Then I came to Tennessee, and the dream is still rolling. ON HIS PERFORMANCE I m really skeptical. I missed a lot of cuts, but in the preseason that type of stuff happens. I ve got to get in and study the tape and get it right. (White had 7 rushes for 28 yards). QB Vince Young ON TAKING POSITIVES FROM THE GAME I think there was a lot of good and a lot of bad in this game. We started slow as a team, we really need to bring a little more excitement to our game. ON HIS FUMBLE AT THE GOAL LINE You re always alert when a ball goes down like. It s been a while since I ve been hit like that. Ever since UT (University of Texas), coach has always told me to be ready for it at any time. ON GETTING LOWER WHILE RUNNING I m a competitor. Coaches are always telling me to get down, but I m 6-5, 225. It probably hurt him more than it hurt me. I m bringing the heat when I m coming. ON PASSING GAME Coach Johnson told me I m doing pretty good with my reads and my checks. Overall, just pretty good. I m getting better as the game goes on, and coach told me I m getting better every week. ON RB LENDALE WHITE I always tell him when we re out there, we ve got to bring a different edge to the game. He s pounding, and then I play action and throw the big bomb. It s a different game when we re in. ON BRONCO QB JAY CUTLER I think he did a good job, I never had a bad impression of him in the first place, I hope the best for him. We re both rookies and everybody looking at us and we have to perform. LB Keith Bulluck GENERAL-- This preseason game we really didn t come out with a game plan, we just lined up and played straight football. I think everything we did wrong can be corrected, we just didn t game plan too much. DE Antwan Odom ON HIS LEG INJURY We re going to do an MRI on Monday, and that s all they told me. I know it s not my knee, I can bend it fine. We ll just have to see on Monday after the MRI.
