The knockout-style tournament is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world s third-longest running open soccer tournament. The 2016 edition began with 91 teams, making it the largest field during the modern era (1995-present). This year s winner will earn $250,000 and a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES FAMILIAR FOES Sporting KC and Minnesota United FC have met once previously, squaring off in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 at Children s Mercy Park. The hosts ran out 2-0 winners, receiving late goals from Soony Saad and Alex Martinez to eliminate the Loons. Several current players from both teams appeared in that match (shown in bold italics below) as Minnesota put up a spirited fight before being reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute with Cristiano Dias red card. The fourth round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will see the 17 MLS clubs based in the United States enter the competition in the round of 32 on Tuesday and Wednesday. The fourth round winners will then be placed in a fixed, 16-team bracket and divided geographically (regardless of league affiliation) into groups of four. A random draw on Thursday will then determine the fifth round pairings within each group Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Schedule Fourth Round June Fifth Round June 29 Quarterfinals July 20 Semifinals Aug. 10 Final Sept. 21 Sporting KC enters the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as reigning champions of the tournament. Vermes side defeated the Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw through regulation to win the 2015 final on Sept. 30, effectively clinching a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. Sporting KC is a three-time champion of the tournament having lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy on home soil in 2004 and 2012 third-most among MLS clubs behind Seattle Sounders FC and the Chicago Fire (four each) AT A GLANCE: SPORTING KC Sporting KC started hot out of the gates in 2016, winning their first three games and four of their first five to move atop the Western Conference. That stretch included three shutouts from goalkeeper Tim Melia, including a spectacular road performance in a 2-0 triumph over the New York Red Bulls on April 9. The club s fortunes have turned south since then. Peter Vermes side has gone in its last 11 matches and went 10 games without a shutout from April 13 to May 27. The rough patch has seen Sporting KC suffer four home losses and score seven goals over 11 games, reaching the two-goal mark just once. Forward Dom Dwyer leads the club with six league goals, while outside back Saad Abdul-Salaam has contributed a team-high four assists. Combative midfielder Roger Espinoza has played at a consistently high level throughout the campaign, while winger Jimmy Medranda has flourished over the last month with a series of eye-catching performances along the left side. Minnesota had a flurry of chances midway through the first half, but goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum snagged Christian Ramirez s lobbed effort in the 22nd minute and denied Kevin Venegas near-post attempt in the 31st minute. An untimely injury to midfielder Ben Speas led to a dip in form as the Loons took three straight losses from May 21 to June 4, ending any hopes of capturing the spring season title. United most recently defeated Miami FC 2-1 on Saturday to finish fourth in the NASL spring season standings. Christian Ramirez leads the club with five NASL goals, while Kevin Venegas has contributed a team-best five assists. Speas has tallied three goals and two assists, and 2015 NASL MVP Stefano Pinho has scored three times. 4

5 UNITED TOPS SAINT LOUIS FC IN THIRD ROUND Minnesota United FC emerged with a 2-0 road victory over USL side Saint Louis FC in its opening game of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on June 1. Second-half goals from Kevin Venegas and new signing Jack Blake allowed United to move on to host Sporting KC at National Sports Center. SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES DWYER AND FEILHABER TOPPING THE CHARTS Forward Dom Dwyer and midfielder Benny Feilhaber will look to separate themselves from the rest of the pack on Sporting KC s all-time Open Cup scoring charts. Dwyer is tied as the club s leading goal scorer in the competition, while Feilhaber sits atop the Open Cup assist chart. After an evenly played first half, the deadlock was broken in the 69th minute as Minnesota forward Christian Ramirez flicked a pass through to Kevin Venegas, who was making his 100th appearance for the club. Venegas coolly snuck a low shot underneath the goalkeeper to put the Loons ahead. United exploited Saint Louis FC s late offensive wave, allowing Danny Cruz to run uncontested down the left side of the field on a counter attack. He curled a low cross to the top of the box where Blake calmly slotted the ball into the net, securing the win for Minnesota. Peter Vermes men have tallied wins against lower-division sides in each of the last five tournaments, but also suffered defeats to said teams in 2011 and Sporting KC s 2011 Open Cup run ended in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 home loss to the Richmond Kickers. Two years later, the defending Open Cup champions fell 1-0 to then-usl outfit Orlando City SC at Children s Mercy Park. Sporting KC last lost to a lower-division team on the road in the 2008 quarterfinals, falling to the Seattle Sounders in penalties after a 0-0 draw. Since that road defeat at Seattle in 2008, Sporting KC has visited just one lowerdivision club in Open Cup play. That match was coincidentally played at the National Sports Center when Kansas City and the Minnesota Thunder battled to a thrilling 3-3 draw in the 2009 round of 16. Kansas City would win the ensuing penalty shootout and advance to the quarterfinals. ONE PREVIOUS TRIP TO THE NATIONAL SPORTS CENTER Kansas City will make its second trip to Blaine, Minnesota s National Sports Center on Wednesday. The club previously visited the stadium on June 30, 2009 for the U.S. Open Cup round of 16, dueling the Minnesota Thunder to a thrilling 3-3 draw. Kansas City prevailed 4-2 in the decisive penalty shootout to progress to the quarterfinals. Current Sporting KC players Roger Espinoza and Graham Zusi started in that match, and Espinoza assisted Kansas City s opening goal to Michael Kraus in the 17th minute. The occasion marks a rare occurance for Sporting KC, who have played just two of their last 17 Open Cup matches away from home since May Peter Vermes men came out on top both times, defeating the Philadelphia Union 2-0 in the 2012 semifinals and beating the same team in the 2015 final via penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw through regulation. Throw in a 2011 preliminary round win at the Houston Dynamo, and Sporting KC is unbeaten in its last three Open Cup road games. The side hasn t lost on the road in the competition since the 2009 quarterfinals, a 1-0 setback to eventual champion Seattle Sounders FC. SPORTING SMASHES 2015 ATTENDANCE RECORDS In four games leading up to the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final, Sporting KC s Children s Mercy Park set single-round, modern era U.S. Open Cup attendance records in the Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Last season Vermes passed Gansler as the winningest coach in Sporting KC history, ending 2015 with 90 regular season wins and 113 victories across all competitions. Should Sporting KC add to its trophy haul in 2016, it would join LA as the only MLS clubs to win four titles in a five-year span since Sporting KC MLS Cup (2013), Open Cup (2012, 2015) Seattle Sounders FC Open Cup (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014), Supporters Shield (2014) D.C. United Open Cup (2008), Supporters Shield (2006, 2007) LA Galaxy MLS Cup (2011, 2012, 2014), Supporters Shield (2010, 2011) Columbus Crew SC MLS Cup (2008), Supporters Shield (2008, 2009) 5
