3 Execution: Midfielders set up along one side of the field, defenders on the other. The middle middie and defender pinch in toward the center. Midfielder goes one on one with defender in an open field situation and the ladder moves up field with him. Should he not be able to beat the defender, he should reverse the ball by passing to the goalie who acts as an outlet pass and then passes it to the defender on the opposite side of the field. The clearing team then attempts to move the ball up the field on the other side. This is a more advanced clear. The primary danger of using this clear is that long pole defenders are receiving longer passes. Execution: There should be four defensive players (the goalie, a midfielder, and two defensemen on either side of the goal) in the defensive end, and three players (two midfielders and a defenseman) near the midfield line. Coaching Tip: Place the defenseman near the box side for an easy substitution of a midfielder. The midfielder in the defensive end (this player should be your best ball handler) starts with the ball. 1. He may go one on one with his defender, 2. He may pass the ball to the near defenseman who can then pass to the middle midfielder. 3. He can pass the ball to the middle midfielder immediately. The midfielder who just passed the ball should look to set up a give and go situation. 3

4 To improve the decision-making and passing skills of defensemen as they dodge attackmen to clear the ball. Half-field Balls Only 8-10 defensive players should participate in this drill at a time. Start three clearing defensemen in a skinny V -shape that is approximately 25 yards high and 10 yards wide. Start two riders on the two defensemen who are closest together. A coach stands about 5-8 yards from the third defensemen and rolls a ball to him. This defenseman scoops the ball and dodges the coach who applies token defensive pressure. As he passes the coach, the two other defenders cut towards him to create passing lanes, and one of the riders leaves his man to approach the ballcarrier. The first defender passes to his open teammate and, after receiving the pass, this second defender turns up-field. As he does this, the second rider leaves his man to pick up the new ballcarrier, who then passes to the third defender. 5 Dodging and cutting to create passing lanes Reading defenders to find open teammates Clearing decisions and passes To increase the competitiveness of the drill, challenge defenders to keep the ball from hitting the ground--- give them a certain number of drops which they must stay under. To increase the difficulty of it, start with a smaller triangle so that the riders have less distance to cover and the defenders must make quicker decisions. 6 To improve coordination and competence of a team s clearing skills. Half-field Balls The first variation of this drill should include no more than 6-8 players, plus a goalie. And, the second should include no more than 15-18, plus a goalie. If riders are added, these numbers can be doubled. There are two versions of this drill, both of which can be very helpful: 1. Without midfielders: Start three defensemen around the crease and a goalie in the cage. On a coach s shot, two of the defensemen break out to the goalie s wings and the third stays put by the crease. The goalie outlets the ball to one wing defender who starts to head up-field. The third defender breaks up the field in front of him, looking for a pass. The defender with the ball then rolls back and re-directs the ball across the field. The middle defender adjusts his cut and heads-up field in front of the second wing defender. The second wing defender receives the pass, heads up-field, and throws the ball to the middle defender who carries it over midfield. 2. With midfielders: Start six defensive players (three defensemen and three midfielders), along with a goalie, around the crease as if they were playing defense. Coaches can pass a ball between them forcing the defense to adjust positions accordingly. On a coach s shot, all defenders break out (one defenseman to each wing and one in the middle, one midfielder to each corner of the midfield and one straight up towards the face-off X ). The goalie outlets the ball to one side. The defenseman on that wing receives it, looks up-field, and re-directs it to the opposite side. As the ball is re-directed all players cut and adjust their position to create passing lanes. The second wing defenseman and passes it to the middle midfielder coming back to the ball. He turns up-field, and passes the ball to the corner midfielder on the same side. 6

8 To improve clearing, passing, and cutting skills Full-field Balls An entire team, including at least two goalies, should participate in this drill at one time. Divide players into eight even lines (as seen in the diagram below) and start one goalie in each goal. A coach s shot starts the drill and the goalie outlets the ball to the line at his right. This player turns up-field and passes to the line that starts at the restraining line. This player turns up-field and passes to the line that starts at the midfield line. This player turns up-field and passes to the line down the wing on his side. This player turns to the middle of the field and passes to the coach in front of the goal. The coach shoots the ball on the goalie, and the drill repeats itself up the other side of the field. After a player throws the ball, he follows his pass and runs to the end of the line where he threw the ball. To increase the competitiveness, count the number of times the ball hits the ground and give the team a number to try to stay under.
