1 INDOOR SOCCER RULES All policies and procedures governing Intramural Sport programs at The University of Alabama are outlined in the Intramural Sports Handbook. PLAYERS AND EQUIPMENT Number of Players: The game shall be played between two teams of 5 players each. Three players are required to start the game. All players must sign-in with the supervisor at the event site prior to the event to be eligible to participate. Jerseys: Players of the opposing teams must wear contrasting colored jerseys, without pockets. Jerseys should be tucked in at all times. Goalkeepers must wear a jersey that contrasts with both teams colors. Shorts/Pants: All players are required to wear either shorts or pants. There shall be NO belts, belt loops, zippers, buttons, or exposed drawstrings on the pants or shorts of the player. Players are not permitted to play in boxer shorts or any other form of undergarments. Shoes: Shoes must cover the entire foot and have a non-marking sole. 5-finger shoes are not allowed. Illegal Equipment: A player wearing illegal equipment shall not be permitted to play. Types of equipment or substances which shall always be declared illegal include, but are not limited to: A. Headwear containing any hard, unyielding, stiff material, including billed hats, or items containing exposed knots B. Jewelry C. Pads, Casts, or Braces worn above the waist D. Shirts or jerseys with names that may be deemed vulgar by the Intramural Sports Staff E. Pants or shorts with any belt(s), belt loop(s), zipper(s), or exposed drawstring(s) F. Any leg or knee brace deemed unsafe by the Certified Athletic Trainer on staff. Medical Bracelets: Any participant required to wear medical bracelets or medical medals will be permitted to do so. They must be taped to the body with medial data visible by the Athletic Trainer on site. Game Ball: All indoor soccer balls will be provided by the Competitive Sports Staff. COURT, TIMING AND SUBSTITUTIONS Timing: The regulation game shall consist of two, 15-minute halves. The clock runs continuously during play and stops for any stoppage during the last two minutes of the second half. Forfeits: Game time is forfeit time. If a team has one less than the minimum number required to play, they will be extended a five minute grace period. During the grace period, the game clock will run and play will begin once the opposing team has met the minimum requirements.

2 Mercy Rule: The game will be over if a team is winning by four (4) or more goals with two minutes or less remaining. The game will be over if a team is winning by eight (8) or more goals with five minutes or less remaining. The game will be over if a team is winning by 15 or more goals at any point in the second half. Overtime: If the game is tied at the end of regulation, a five-minute extra period will be played. The clock will run continuously throughout the overtime period. If the score is tied at the end of the extra period in a regular season game, the game will result in a tie. Playoff Ties: If the game is tied at the end of the extra period in a playoff game, each team will select three players to take alternating penalty kicks. Only players on the field at the end of the extra period are eligible to participate in the penalty kicks. Substitutions: Teams may substitute players during play with the following provisions: Players must substitute off the court of play or within one yard of the door. Substitutions must not interfere with active play. Substitutes must enter and exit the team box using the door. Climbing over the wall is prohibited. Substitutions are not allowed during any free kick. After the ball has been whistled dead, each team is guaranteed ten seconds to complete a substitution. SCORING Goals: A team scores a goal when the entire ball legally passes over the goal line between the goal posts and under the crossbar. A goal may be scored from a kickoff, free kick, penalty kick, corner kick, kick-in, drop ball, or goalkeeper s throw. A goal may not be scored from a free kick into a team s own goal. GOALKEEPER PRIVLIGES Handling: The goalkeeper may catch, carry, strike, or propel the ball with his/her hands or arms within his/her own penalty arc. Immunity: While in possession of the ball, the goalkeeper may not be charged, interfered with or impeded in any manner by an opponent. Control: From the moment a goalkeeper controls the ball in his/her hands, the goalkeeper has five seconds to release the ball. Repossession: Having released it into play, the goalkeeper may not touch the ball again with his/her hands before it has been touched or played by a player of the opposing team. Pass by Teammates: If a player deliberately kicks the ball with his/her foot or any part of the body below the knee to his/her goalkeeper or throws the ball in to a goalkeeper, the goalkeeper is not permitted to touch the ball with his/her hands. STARTING AND RESTARTING PLAY Start of the Game: The officials will bring in both teams captains and have a coin toss. The away team will call the toss. The team that wins the toss will have the option to choose the ball or which end to defend. The other team will choose from the remaining options. Kick Off: A kick off is taken from the center mark on the field at the beginning of each half and after every goal. Each team must be in its own half of the field. The defending team must be ten feet from the ball until the ball is kicked. The ball may be played in any direction. The kicker may not touch the ball a second time until it has touched another player. Drop Ball: A drop ball is used to restart the match after a stoppage for which there is no designated resumption of play or when play is stopped when neither team has clear possession. The referee drops the ball where it was located when play was stopped. The ball is in play when it touches the ground. BALL OUT OF PLAY Ball Out of Play: The ball is out of play when the entire ball has crossed over the perimeter wall along the goal line or touchline. Kick-in: A kick-in is awarded when the ball goes out of play along either touchline. The kick-in is awarded to the team that did not cause the ball to go out of play. A kick-in is taken from the point where it crossed the touch line. Goal Throw: A goal throw is awarded when the ball goes out of play along the goal line and is last touched by the attacking team. The throw must be taken from within the penalty arc and must leave the penalty arc before it can be played by any player. If the ball is played a second time within the penalty arc, the throw will be retaken.

3 Corner Kick: A corner kick is awarded when the ball goes out of play along the goal line and is last touched by the defending team. The kick must be taken from the arc in the corner nearest where the ball went out of play. Opponents must remain ten (10) feet away from the ball until it is in play. DIRECT AND INDIRECT FREE KICK Free Kick: For free kicks the ball must be stationary when the kick is taken and the kicker cannot touch the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player. EXCEPTION: A free kick awarded in the penalty arc may be taken from any point inside that area. Direct Free Kick: All free kicks in indoor soccer are direct free kicks. A team may score on any free kick. Ten Feet: The opposing team must be at least ten feet away from the ball until it is put in play. Special Situations: On free kicks taken from the defending team s penalty area, the opposing team must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. For fouls that occur inside the attacking team s penalty arc but do not result in a penalty kick, a free kick shall be awarded from the top of the penalty arc. FOULS AND MISCONDUCT Fouls: A penalty kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following offenses inside his/her team s penalty arc: A. Kicks or attempts to kick an opponent B. Trips or attempts to trip an opponent C. Jumps at an opponent D. Charges an opponent E. Strikes or attempts to strike an opponent F. Pushes an opponent G. Boarding an opponent D. Roughing an opponent in a reckless or excessive manner E. Taunting an opponent or attempting to provoke an altercation F. Second blue card offense resulting in a soft yellow. A cautioned player must leave the court and spend four minutes in the penalty area for a straight yellow or two minutes in the penalty area for a soft yellow. Damage to the lights or superstructure will result in further disciplinary action by the Competitive Sports Office. An ejected player must leave the field and may not participate further in the match. The player may not be replaced on the field, and the team must play short-handed for five minutes for a straight red card, two minutes for accumulation of blue cards, or four minutes for accumulation of yellow cards. Forfeit: Any team that accrues three yellow cards, or its equivalent, in a match shall forfeit that game. PENALTY KICK Awarding a Penalty Kick: If the defending team commits a foul that results in a penalty kick inside their own penalty arc, the attacking team will be awarded a penalty kick from the penalty mark. Procedure: The player awarded the kick must utilize one fluid motion in playing the ball, and the ball must move forward as a result of the kick. The defending goalkeeper may move laterally but must remain on his goal line until the ball has been kicked. All other players shall be located behind the center line and outside the center circle. Infractions: If the attacking team infringes on a successful attempt or if the defending team infringes on an unsuccessful attempt, the kick will be retaken. If the defending team infringes on a successful attempt, the goal will count. If the attacking team infringes on an unsuccessful attempt, the kick is not retaken. If both teams infringe on a penalty kick, the kick will be retaken. CO-REC MODIFICATIONS Number of players: The game shall be played between two teams of 5 players.
