England Goal Observation from Last Warm-up Game before World Cup 2010 Observed by Richard Seedhouse (Author of Coaching The Coach Book) STEP 1 of 4 A.Cole thow-in to J.Cole comes off the player and turn in-field before playing the ball in behind Gerrard who moves forward and takes the attention of defender B.. The ball is actually passed back to Johnson. Johnson dribbles forward and takes the ball past the first midfielder C. STEP 2 of 4 Johnson continues forward beating C, B for pace gives up easily. A coming across to defend and the passes the ball off to Gerrard just before an attempted tackle from D. E is drawn toward Johnson before turning to close down Gerrard once the ball is played.
STEP 3 of 4 As the ball is played to SWP, defender A leaves Johnson and goes back to a central midfield position leaving no cover. D and B both run toward SWP leaving E with Gerrard but coming slightly forward to SWP. The gap opens in behind E and Johnson. STEP 4 of 4 SWP plays the ball through for Gerrard to run onto, played onside by the centre halfs marking Crouch and Defoe. The GK tries to close down Gerrard who cuts the ball back to Defoe to score. Good attacking play and finishing or just bad defending? Good run by Gerrard from left central midfield to right wing. Good attacking run into space ahead of the defence by johnson. SWP through ball is an easy option as the defence just opens up, the last defender even wandering back off to a midfield position while the others follow the ball into SWP for him to simply knock behind them. Not really a goal created more taking advantage of errors, i suggest they will not get this opportunity on Saturday
Finishing Sessions 6 Key Coaching Points which are important factors for the following practices: 1. Movement / Creating Space 2. Speed of movement and decision 3. Body shape / Positioning 4. Timing of runs / Angle of runs 5. Quality of delivery / finish 6. Reaction to rebounds if any Below I have included 3 Finishing drills / phase of players / small sided games. For Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level. Finishing SSG Beginner Level (8+ yrs)
Movement, Creating Space & Finishing THE TEAM IN POSSESSION MUST ADVANCE THE BALL DOWN FIELD AND SCORE IN THE OPPOSING GOAL. THE PLAYER-KEEPER (PK) FOR BOTH TEAMS CAN USE THEIR HANDS ANYWHERE WITHIN THE DEFENSIVE ENDZONE. STEP 2 of 2 AS THE RED PLAYER SHOOTS, HIS/HER TEAM-MATES SHOULD FOLLOW UP ANY REBOUNDS FROM THE PLAYER-KEEPER (PK). CONTINUES UNTIL THE FIRST TEAM SCORES E.G. 5 GOALS.
Crossing and Finishing Intermediate Level (12+ yrs) Coaching Points: 1. For this drill to work effectively, the build up play must all be technically correct (review passing drills 1-7 on 2. Review crossing techniques for various ways of crossing the ball. This depends on which position of the field you are in. 3. Make sure the wide players check to the yellow disc cone before receiving the ball. This movement creates space, e.g. in a game situation taking an opponent away before receiving the ball. 4. The 2 players attacking the cross must not make their run too early. They should make it just when the wide player is about to cross the ball. This will prevent the ball from going behind them.
Progression: 1. There are many variations and progressions for this drill. Please see Crossing and Finishing Position 1 or 2 Training Opponent Mannequins (TOM ) in the penalty area. 3. Exchange the wingers and attackers after a period of time.
