St. Francis Soccer Club Recreation Coaches Manual Welcome to the 2017 season, recreation coaches! We look forward to a fun, action-packed and rewarding time with our players. Our program is designed to develop a love for soccer, while promoting the fundamental skills necessary for players to develop in an ageappropriate manner. Included in this packet is information regarding coaching goals/philosophies, and activity suggestions for players across three age ranges: - U4-U7 - U8-U10 - U11+ Please know that this is not a curriculum as much as flexible ideas that can enhance your practice sessions. Many of these activities are interchangeable, adaptable, and will have varying levels of success in your team. In each case, our goal is fun, excitement, and learning. The appendices of this document contain diagrams to activities that may require a visual aid. Specific coaching points for each will be included. These diagrams will be referenced in the written section. Thank you so much for your participation as a coach in our program. Know that you are making a big difference in these young people s lives! Your energy levels, enthusiasm and enjoyment will be reflected in our players, and it is greatly appreciated. If you have any soccer-related questions regarding this manual, or you have additional questions once you get started, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to working with you on and off the field. Gary Long glong@stfrancissoccer.com / (317) Recreation Coach Coordinator

Soccer is a simple game made complicated by those who should know better - Bill Shankly U4-U7 At the youngest ages, our focus in practice should be: - Fun! - Constant movement - Quick transitions - Communicating basics - Displaying a love for the game Below are some activities that can help you do that. A basic rule I feel is often overlooked when coaching our youngest players if it s working, keep doing it! Although variation is good in general, there will be certain activities your team truly loves. If that s the case, keep at it! Repetition is encouraged. They will be improving all the time. DRIBBLING (Coaching points follow activities) Activity 1: Introduction to Dribbling Each player has a ball and is moving. As play continues coach gives players instructions as to which foot and surface to use: Inside - Each foot; Outside - Each foot; Sole (Rolling the Ball) - Each foot; Turning: Stopping and changing direction on command. Activity 2: Body Parts Dribble Players dribble to keep control while avoiding others. While they dribble the coach calls out a body part, player immediately stops the ball with that body part. As players become used to the game, pick a player to give commands. Activity 3: Dribble tag Each player has a ball and is dribbling in designated area. On command, they must keep control of their own ball while tagging another player. First player to 5 wins. Appendices Activity 4: Knock out! Each player is dribbling with a ball in designated area. On command, each player must attempt to kick out the other player s ball, while maintaining control of their own. Last player standing wins. You may have to reduce the size of the area as players are eliminated.

Activity 5: Team dribblers One player starts with a ball and must chase the others while maintaining control. If he/she is able to tag another player, they get a ball and the team grows. Two are now chasing, and so on. The last person to be tagged is the winner. Appendices Activity 6: Crab Attack! Select 3 players to be crabs, all others have a ball. Players with a ball are on one end of the grid, crabs take position within the grid in a crab position. One the coach s signal, players with balls attempt to dribble across the grid. Crabs try to kick balls away; when a ball is kicked that player becomes a crab. Continue until there is one left. They select 2 friends to join them and a new game is started. Appendices Activity 7: Invasion 3 teams, in a grid that has a 5yard circle in the middle. One team is in the circle while the other two are dribbling around the outside. On the Coach s command, those outside attempt to dribble through the circle. Each successful attempt is 1 point and the first team to 5 gets to be inside the circle. Appendices Coaching points for dribbling activities: - Head up - Keep the ball close - Control (especially when changing direction) - Changing speed - Dribbling with direction - Using the outside of the foot when at speed - Use body to protect the ball A further note on dribbling activities: Young players feed off competition. In each of these, find a way to have a winner. They will also love if you are looking for the best at each activity. So, at the end of an activity, I ll say Jonny was the best, round of applause. You ll be surprised how motivated they are to be picked next!

PASSING (Coaching points follow activities) Activity 1: Marbles Each player has a ball and players are in pairs. One player passes their ball away from the pair. Players now take turns trying to hit each other s ball. First to do so gets a point. Play continues with players alternating turns. First to 5 wins. Activity 2: Rock, paper, scissors Players play one game of rock, paper and scissors. The losing player walks 5 yards away and stands with their legs apart. The winner attempts to pass the ball between his/her legs. Doing so scores a point. First to 5 wins. Activity 3: Get coach! (Players favorite) Each player has a ball within a grid. As they are dribbling the coach moves around the space as well. On the coach s command all players try to pass their ball and hit the coach below the knee. Each time a player is successful the coach yells ouch and that player gets a point. After a short period of time players return to dribbling until given the command to try and score again. Activity 4: Soccer golf Groups of 2, each has their soccer ball. Players select a random object, [cone, vest, goal, goal post, etc.] and alternate turns trying to hit the target. The fewest attempts to hit the target scores a point. Activity 5: 2v1 quick games Have two goals set up and one team beside each. Play rolling 2v1 games where the two start with the ball and attempt to score. Focus on the pass! The single player may intercept and score (good time to reinforce dribbling points). Once a player scores, or the ball goes out of play, the game is over. Reset and start with a new 2v1. Appendices Activity 6: Pass race Set up gates at random places in a large grid. Two players share a ball. One must pass to the other through a gate to score a point. The same gate cannot be used twice in a row. Vary the size and distance between gates. First team to 5 wins. Appendices

Coaching points for passing activities: - Use the inside of the foot (avoid the toe) - Plant foot beside the ball and pointing to target - Toes up on kicking foot - Strike through the middle of the ball - Follow through to target - Pace of the pass is important/determined by distance A further note on passing activities: Passing activities can easily be stale. Having young players simply pass back and forth to each other can become boring very quickly. Focus on the games outlined, and use them as a platform to talk about passing. You will likely have to actually show (by moving their feet) correct passing technique. They will want to use the toe. Demonstrate why this will mean less control. SHOOTING AND SCORING (Coaching points follow activities) Activity 1: Introduction to shooting Set up more than one goal, and split players evenly. In open goals (no keeper), players are to dribble for 5 yards, before shooting towards goal. Keep it fast moving to avoid lines. Players DO NOT collect their ball if it goes in the net. They can if it goes wide. Vary the distance of the shot, and focus on using both feet. At this stage, don t worry about where in the goal it goes, just celebrate wildly when they score! Set up a competition between teams in a set amount of time. Appendices Activity 2: Continuous dribbling and shooting Set up two teams 5 yards from the goal posts, and two cones opposite them 15 yards away. Ball are kept at the cones. On command, the first two in each group sprint, collect the ball and dribble, before shooting (no goal keeper). Leave the balls in the goals. First team to 5 wins. This should be fast paced to avoid lines. Appendices Activity 3: Shoot, then save! Separate players in to 2 teams. Have players line up single file in opposite corners, diagonally from each other. Play begins with the first player of one team dribbling out and shooting at the goal on the opposite end. One player from the second plays in goal. As soon as the shot is taken, the shooter recovers to protect his own goal and the next player from

the defending team dribbles out and tries to score. Play continues to 5. If players struggle to score, increase the size of the goal. Appendices Coaching points for shooting activities: - Use the laces of the foot (avoid the toe) - Plant foot beside the ball and pointing to target - Ankle locked and pointed downward - Follow through to target and land on shooting foot - Aim for the whole goal at this stage - Celebrate! A further note on shooting activities: Young players will miss often. Even more reason to celebrate when they score! Every goal is important, every time. In the past, I have asked to see which player has the best celebration after scoring. You ll be surprised what they come up with! As with passing, you will likely have to actually show correct shooting technique. They will want to use the toe. At this age I would avoid goalkeepers where possible, increasing the success rate as much as possible.

As a coach you should not only teach the skills but also the why behind them Zinedine Zidane U8-U10 At this age range, our focus in practice should be: - Fun! - Reinforcing (or teaching) basics outlined above - Repetition - Moving from the technical to the tactical - Thinking in advance of the ball (anticipation) - Being part of a team Below are some activities that can help you work on these elements. Know that at this age, you may have players who have been involved in soccer half their lives, with others playing for the first time. It s quite a skill to be able to challenge all ability levels in your sessions! As a (very) general rule, those with greater ability can always be asked to do things more quickly, with their weaker foot, and with less touches. Remember that you can also alter teams to create more balance, and manipulate the score. Let s say the better team is winning 3-0. Ok, next goal is worth 4. The weaker team will now be very motivated. Any questions on the difficulty of working with mixed abilities, let me know. You will notice the activities for this age group (and 11+) have not been strictly designated a theme (e.g. passing). As they are slightly more complex, you can emphasize what you would like to within the activity. For example, in Windows, you can use this as an activity for passing, movement, receiving the ball, or a combination of those. I have broadly termed them: o Basic warm up ideas o Technical skill based o Tactical team/game based

BASIC ACTIVITIES SUGGESTED WARM UPS Activity 1: Hurricanes & Ladders (problem solving) Play consists of two teams of 5 to 7 players with one ball using half a field. One team starts out as the ladder; the other is the hurricane. The coach tosses the ball away and the ladder group must run to the ball, form a line and immediately begin handing the ball to the end of the line in an over the head/between the legs fashion. At the same time the hurricane team forms a tight circle or huddle and watches while one team member runs around the huddle as many times as possible before the ladder group completes the process of passing the ball from the front to the back of the line and yells stop! The number of circles is counted and the roles reverse when the coach tosses the ball away again. Play until one team reaches 10. Activity 2: Ball Retrieve (anticipation) Players are in groups of 3 or 4 with one ball in general space, about half a soccer field. The coach tosses or plays the ball away and players must return it to the coach with each player touching the ball (feet only) at least once. The final pass should be played to a player standing next to the coach. The coach then calls out a number and players must return the ball in exactly that many passes. The activity encourages players to think in terms of length and width as well as collective play. The coach can move within the space to make the task more difficult. Activity 3: Defrost Tag (decision making) Start with two equal teams and a 30 x 30 yard area. One entire team is inside the area without balls. The other team starts on the outside of the area with one ball per player. On the coach s signal, the team with the balls dribbles into the area and tries to hit the other team players below the knees. Emphasize passing, not shooting, the ball. Players can run or jump to avoid getting hit. Once a player is hit with a ball, they freeze and must stand with legs apart and hands on hips. A frozen player can be unfrozen if a teammate crawls through the legs. The objective is to see how long it takes to freeze the entire team. Safety note: as long as a part of the crawling player s body is still beneath the frozen player, both players are safe and a ball cannot be played at them.

TECHNICAL (coaching points to follow activities) Activity 1: Windows Make a grid approx. 15x15 yards. Have half the group on the outside of the grid, with balls. The others inside the grid without. The inside players can freely move within the grid and will move toward a free player on the outside. That player tosses the ball (under arm) and the inside player plays it back using head, both feet, knees, chest etc. Progress the activity by having the inside players receive a pass from the outside and find another free outside player. They can finally progress to switching balls, that is they dribble a ball to the outside and a new player from the outside swaps possession with him and is now an inside player. Lots of movement and communication here! Appendices Activity 2: Gauntlet Make a grid approximately 20x15 yard. Instruct one defender to stand inside the grid without a ball. The remaining players will start on the end line with a ball. On the coach s command, all of the attacking players dribble at speed to the other side line avoiding the defender. If the defender wins the ball and kicks the ball out of the grid, that attacker becomes an additional defender (without a ball) on the next series. The last player to make it through the gauntlet wins the game. Appendices Activity 3: Keep away Start with a restricted space (for 12 players maybe 25 x 25 would do). If there are 12 players have 7 start dribbling soccer balls. The other 5 are working independently trying to win a ball from one of the 7 who started with a ball. If a player wins a ball, he/she tries to keep it and the player who lost the ball can try to win that ball back or to go after someone else's ball. At the end of a predetermined time period, the players who end up NOT having a ball lose. One thing to consider is to keep changing the time periods or else smart players might allow themselves to lose the ball early and only work the last 30 seconds or so. If they don't know when the game might end, they have to work the whole time! Activity 4: Heads up and talk! Evenly split two teams with one set on the inside of the grid without a ball, players on the outside have a ball. The players in the middle of the grid go towards one of the players in the corners who have a ball and call for the ball. The ball is played into the feet of the players calling for the ball and then the ball is played right back to the corner and then the player EXPLODES to another corner to do the same thing. The balls should be played properly with good pace and the players should communicate ("Jeff, Ball" and "Back"). Do not have the players going in a certain pattern (for example, the players in the middle

should NOT go in a clockwise rotation to make it easy). This will force the players to keep their heads up to see who has a ball and is available. Do this for 1 minute and then rotate the players (players in the corners go to the middle and players in the middle to the corners). Activity 5: Turns Have all players with a ball in a large area. The area does not have to be designated with cones. This can help replicate free play. Practice several turns on the coach s command. For example, inside and outside of the foot turns, stop turns, Cruyff, step over. Great idea to look for the best at each and recognize them. Suggest that you would like to see these in matches. Activity 6: Fight for it! This is an activity with more of a defensive focus. Players love it! Have players in pairs, in a grid approx. 20x20 yards. As a starting point, they are to balance the ball between body parts, for example, both player s knees must be on the same ball, or the ball balancing between their foreheads (this can be a challenge in itself). Feel free to get creative with your starting points. When all groups are ready, blow your whistle and it s a tussle for the ball. The objective is to shield the ball while your opponent aggressively, but fairly tries to get possession. The winner is the player in possession when you blow the whistle to stop. Emphasize aggressively defending the ball by getting low, getting your body in between the defender and the ball, and shielding strongly. Make sure to point out legitimate fouls, but encourage controlled aggression. First player to 5 wins. Appendices Coaching points for technical activities: - Passing basics should be reinforced - Weight of the pass - Pass to the appropriate foot on the receiving player - Dribbling with the outside of the foot - Changing speed on the dribble - Communicating loudly and clearly to team mates - Decision making where are my teammates? Who is free? - Body positon when defending low, knees bent, on toes, arms out, body in the way, aggressive

TACTICAL (coaching points to follow activities) Activity 1: 21 s Set up a grid approx. 40 x 40. It may need adjusted depending on success rate. Evenly divide the players into two teams. The objective is to keep possession for 21 passes. THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE CONSECUTIVE! A successful pass starts the number count, and every subsequent pass is added on. Coach or a capable player may keep count, but ensure each pass is shouted with the appropriate score. There will be periods of minimal scoring, that s ok. Try to encourage players to score in bunches by passing quickly when they see the opportunity. Activity 2: Pirates Use a grid approx. the size of a center circle (will vary depending on numbers). Place 2/3 small goals randomly in the area. One third of the players (e.g. 3) will be defenders, or pirates protecting the goals. The rest (e.g. 6) have a ball and are attempting to score. Defenders may steal the ball, at which time they are attackers. If a pirate steals your ball and scores, you become a pirate. Last player with a ball wins. Appendices Activity 3: Numbers Game Create a small 1v1 field approximately 15x20 yds with two small goals on each end line. Split the group into two even teams and assign a number to each player in each team. For instance, if you have 5 players in each team, number off 1-5 in each team. One group wears an alternate jersey. The coach plays a ball into the area and calls out a number. Those players assigned to that number sprint onto the field and play a 1v1. The game continues until a team scores a goal or the ball goes out of bounds. Can advance this to 2v2, or 3v3 depending on success rate. Activity 4: Multi goal All players in a large grid. Size will vary depending on numbers. If players are finding it difficult, increase the space. Similarly, if it s too easy, feel free to decrease the area. Play even teams (e.g. 6v6) and place 3-4 goals randomly around the grid. All goals are in play, all the time. If your team is in possession, you can score in any goal. This can include passing through the goal to a team-mate, or dribbling through yourself. Excellent activity for decision making and awareness under pressure. Encourage players to look for goals that are NOT closest to them. Appendices

Activity 5: Go wide! Set up a rectangular grid (e.g. 40x20 yards). Three goals are to be placed on each end-line. One in the middle and two on the corners. Play even teams (e.g. 5v5) with one group scoring towards one end, and the other going the opposite direction. Free play in the middle, and a team may pass through any of their goals to score. However, wide goals are worth 5 points. Really emphasize not simply going straight ahead but changing direction or switching the play to the wide goals. If you are having limited success, consider having neutral players who are always attackers. The numbers up will help players find wide options and create greater success. Appendices Activity 6: Numbers up! Set up a grid approx. 20 x 20 yards. On one end you have a defending team with a goalkeeper. The other end will be attackers with no goal to defend. Play 4v2 with the attacking team always numbers up. They are attempting to score against the two defenders and goalkeeper. Instruct the players to exploit their numerical advantage and finish with a shot on goal. Attackers should move the ball looking for the open player and holes in the defense. Defenders should attempt to break-down the attack and to gain experience in how to cover a man-down situation. If the defenders can win it and dribble or pass to coach, they score 5 points. Appendices Coaching points for tactical activities: - Passing and receiving basics should be reinforced - Recognizing how to find space and not crowd the ball - Spread out when in possession! - Limit touches and move the ball quickly - Create 2 v 1 situations when possible - Playing wide can help spread defenders and create spaces - When a shooting opportunity arises, take it!

Soccer is played with the head. The feet are just the tools Andrea Pirlo U11+ At this age range, our focus in practice should be: - Fun! - Mastery of technical basics - Playing quickly - Decision making - Tactical awareness in attacking and defending - Working as a group - Understanding positional play BASIC ACTIVITIES SUGGESTED WARM UPS Activity 1: Handball (movement off the ball) Use the full field available, with two full size goals. Players are to use their hands, and throw the ball between team mates whilst making their way down the field. You cannot run with the ball. If the ball is dropped, it is turned over to the other team. Defending teams can also intercept a pass mid-air. To score, the attacking team must head the ball into the net. This can be changed to a volley, or any finish off your choice. Although it may seem counterintuitive to play with the hands, this is a great opportunity to discuss attacking play. Emphasize quick movement off the ball, finding space and penetrating passes, all good tactical points. This is a player s favorite! Activity 2: Speed of play (forward thinking) Create a 30X40 grid. Divide the team into even groups of 4 players per group (each group in different color pennies). Number the players 1 through 4; the ball should start with players #1.. With the players spread out inside the grid randomly and intermingled, perform the following progression: Players should pass to the next highest number upon receiving the ball. So #1 passes to #2; #2 passes to #3; #3 passes to #4; finally #4 passes to #1 and the warm-up continues. Next, reverse the pattern where #4 plays to #3, #3 passes to #2; etc. Next, players play to odd players if they are odd numbers and even

players play to even numbers. For Example, #1 passes to #3, and #2 passes to #4. Decrease the number of touches to make the speed of play faster by demanding quicker thought process. Activity 3: Total warm up (choose your focus) This is an activity I have used extensively at from U11 right to college level players. Have all the players in a large area. I recommend you use the total are you have available, such as half a field. Give out a small number of balls for the whole group to use (e.g. three balls among 12 players). From here, have them pass and move at random, showing for and playing any ball they like between them. Introduce technical activities such as 2 touch, use both feet, opening your body to the field, long and short passing, short sprint after you pass etc. Get creative! It s a total warm up as I start with this and incorporate dynamic stretching between technical activities. Stop the play, stretch, then start again with a new skill. TECHNICAL Activity 1: 3 v Start with a 20x20 grid. Create 3 teams of 3, or similar equal numbers. Each team should be a different color. One team is designated as defenders first. The other two groups are responsible for keeping possession among the 2 groups. If the defending team wins the ball, the team who made a mistake becomes the defending team. Any ball played out of the grid is considered a loss of possession by that group, and that group should become defense. You can also rotate the defenders every 2-3 minutes rather than automatically switching after loss of possession to help with continuity. Appendices Activity 2: Advanced windows Make a grid approx. 15x15 yards. Have half the group on the outside of the grid, with balls. The others inside the grid without. The inside players can freely move within the grid and will move toward a free player on the outside. Inside players are to show for the ball, receive a pass, turn and play another outside player. Ensure they make a good decision and don t play to an unavailable player. Progress by including a wall pass on the outside, with players switching positons. Further advance to take overs where central players dribble to the edge and the ball is switched to an outside player whilst players are moving at speed. Finally, add overlaps where inside players play a pass to the outside, sprint around their target and receive a pass on the inside again. Appendices

Activity 3: Fast paced attacking and defending Create a grid that is as wide as the penalty box, and approximately yards from goal. Place a goalkeeper in the goal and split the remaining players into two teams. The two groups will line up on opposite sides of the grid on a cone set farthest from the goal. Make sure that every player has a ball. On the coach s command, the first player in the one team dribbles the ball with speed at the edge of the penalty box and quickly has a shot as they approach. Immediately after the player shoots, the first player from the other team dribbles at the penalty box as the first player defends his attempt. After the second player shoots, they immediately defend the next player who is now attacking. Repeat this rotation throughout the activity. Appendices Activity 4: Horseshoes Players love this! It s great for a fun warmup and some competition to start the session. Have players pair up. Set two cones approx. 15 yards apart, with each player at one cone. Two teams of two will share two cones, and play against each other. One partner passes the ball (preferably in the air) to the other, who must use ONE TOUCH to control the ball as close to the cone as possible. The opposing team do the same thing, and the closet to the ball wins a point. First to 5 is the winner. Play several match-ups so they get to play various other teams. Appendices Coaching points for technical activities: These will depend heavily on your focus, but some general rules apply: - Insist on technical cleanliness including: o Weight of the pass o Pass to the appropriate foot on the receiving player o Touches to a minimum o Ask more accomplished players to execute more quickly o Work on both feet - Communicating loudly and clearly to team mates - Thinking ahead of the ball. Decisions after the ball has arrived are too late!

TACTICAL Activity 1: Invasion Set up a grid at least 20 yards wide by 30 yards long. Divide the grid into three smaller rectangles, with a goal at the end. Dribblers are attempting to beat defenders in each smaller grid to get to goal. The number of defenders decreases in each zone. E.g. 3 in first, then 2, then 1. Attackers try to dribble through the three zones occupied by defenders. Defenders must stay in their zones, and try to kick any ball that is dribbled through out of bounds. Attackers go three at a time. If the dribbler ahead of you in your line gets their ball knocked out, the next attacker in line may go right away. As soon as the attacker in front of you leaves the zone, the next attacker can also go. After beating the last defender, the 'dribbler' must shoot the ball into the goal to get a point for their team. You can use this as either a 1v1 attacking activity, or to work on 1v1 defending. Appendices Activity 2: 5v3 to goal Use half a field with one full size goal at the end. Have 5 attacking players attempt to score against 3 defenders. Here you can emphasize patterns of play, methods of attack, creating 2v1 situations, and shooting when appropriate. Make this as match-realistic as possible. Insist the attacking team numbers play with intent and intensity to score. If the ball is played out of bounds, or turned over, immediately give the attacking team a new ball. I used to play score and you keep playing. Players love to attack, so their reward is more attacking! Appendices Activity 3: End zones Use a large area, such as a half field. Set up two end zones at either end of the field, similar to that seen on a football field. It s free play in the middle, but to score a team must pass into the end zone to a team mate. The pass must be played on the ground, and legitimately controlled by the team mate. No players are allowed to stay in the end zone, encouraging them to time their run and be ready to receive at just the right time. This is also an excellent activity for coaching the importance of penetrating passes between defenders, and recognizing the right time to play that pass. You ll notice young players will want to play to the end zone all the time. Encourage them to possess until the right time, such as when the space is there and a team mate is on the same page. Players often wait for the passer to do the work, but let them know a good run into the end zone can help the passer make a good decision. Appendices

Activity 4: Transition quickly Create a 30X40 yard field with two goals in either end with a goalkeeper in each goal. Split up the team into 3 teams of 4 players and give each team a color (e.g. blue, red, & yellow). To start, have the yellow team play against blue team and the red players start with two players at each of the two goals acting as neutral supporting players to both colors playing. They are always helping the team in possession. If the yellow team scores on the blue team, the yellow team has to quickly retrieve the ball from the goal and attack the goal on the opposite end-line. The blue team steps off to become the supporting players along the outside while the red team steps on the field to play against the yellow team. Continue to rotate off the team getting scored on with the supporting team. The first team to 5 goals wins. This a great activity for stressing the importance of switching from attacking to defending mentality quickly. You can of course use the free play to emphasize any tactical point of your choosing. Appendices Coaching points for tactical activities: - HEAD UP and see the field. Where is my best pass? - Can I help my team mate by finding space? Where is that space? - Take risks and be creative in attack - Move the ball quickly - Create 2 v 1 situations when possible - Play a forward pass when its available
