Grange Royals Round Up News from around the club September 2018 Issue 26 M2W Premiers! Grand Final Result: 1-1 vs North East, 3-1 in shootouts.

We couldn t think of anyone better to review the game for us then club legend and PLW coach Greg Abbott, who picked up a premiership medal due to his support to the team throughout the year.

It was soon very apparent that the girls were ready, as they started full of run and had the Zulu s under pressure.

The Metro 2 Women have capped off a superb year by winning the grand final, defeating North East in a nail biting shootout. We couldn t think of anyone better to review the game for us then club legend and PLW coach Greg Abbott, who picked up a premiership medal due to his support to the team throughout the year. The girls appeared ready for the contest and I could sense the nervous excitement in the change room. It was soon very apparent that the girls were ready, as they started full of run and had the Zulu s under pressure. Our strikers Annie Abbott, Lorraine Walsh and Pria Sandercock gave the defence no respite and it wasn t long until we had our first corner. The first was a direct hit from Carlye Bowden and not a goal but another corner was forced. The second went straight to Briony Murdoch at one left, who trapped, straightened up and sent the ball thundering into the backboard. 1 nil up and we were looking very good. The next 20 minutes of the first half we created multiple chances but weren t able to put the goals away. Jesse Edwards was added to the striker rotation so we could maintain pressure on their defence, our midfield of Joh Harvey, Maddie Gear, Sonia Ryan, Susie Woods, Kaye Chandler and Bri were resolute in backing up the strikers and cutting off any chance North East had to get the ball out. Our defence of Sophie Common, Carlye, Tia Dedman and Hannah Batts were one step ahead of the play and through their intercepts and tackles, they were able to send the ball across the field, opening up space for our mids and strikers. We were in a good position and dominated the first half but to the Zulu s credit we were held to only 1 goal. At half time the group were very positive, we were comfortable with our game and the talk was about maintaining the pressure, keep giving the first option and maintain tight marking. We were very aware that 1 goal was not enough to rest on and we had to work just as hard for the next half. Save the Dates Here are a few key dates for upcoming events at the club. 2 M2W Premiers cont. The second half didn t start well with an immediate turnover from the push back giving North East early possession and time deep in our defence. For the first 20 minutes we were under the pump, not from a lack of effort as all players chased and tackled, but for the first time in the game we lost our composure and a little panic started to set in. Unfortunately, we couldn t keep the Zulu s out forever, and we conceded a goal. From then on the game evened up with the ball travelling end to end with both sides getting close but not able to score. Full time and scores were locked away 1- all. Extra time was not what we wanted after just completing a tough half. Fortunately, we had enough reserves to call on, something that we didn t have the luxury of during the year. The extra time went the same way as the end of the second half, some close calls at both ends but still nothing to break the deadlock. The only way left to decide this contest was a shootout, something we had only practiced in the last couple of trainings. Our nominated five were Carlye, Bri, Annie, Jesse and Kaye. Lucky for us we had champion keeper Annie Davies who was going to make it hard for North East. Our first penalty was taken by Carlye, and everyone in the Grange Royals crowd knew what she would do and thankfully she did it. Classic Carlye stroll up into the circle, BANG, straight into the corner, 1 nil. Annie s turn in goals, and the champ pressured the striker enough to force a rushed shot, SAVED. 1-nil. Bri heads to the 25-yard line. Unfortunately, her attempt was saved. 1-nil. Annie again in goal, just about saved the shot only to see it just slip under her pads and go in off the post Annalise heads to the 25. She had a plan to execute, drive into the circle, turn onto fore stick and slide in. Success. 2-1 Annie steps in again. Her composure in the contest forced another rushed shot and completes the save. Still 2-1. Jesse steps up, focused on what she had to do. Another drive into the circle spin drag and shoot. GOAL At this point we hear Dave Edwards let out an enormous cheer. Still work to do to confirm victory. Annie comes to the net. With the sound of the whistle she comes out to confront the striker, keeps her feet, forces them wide and makes the save. 3-1, and with only one penalty left each, the game was over. What a way to end the season. A great victory to claim the premiership. Well done girls! Masters Women Ladder Position: 2/5 R20 Fixture: vs Blackwood/Burnside, Monday 10th September State Hockey Centre, Pitch 2 The Masters Women have closed off their successful year, where they were runners up in the completion, with a 2-2 draw against Blackwood/Burnside on Monday night. It was a game they really should have won, failing to convert two penalty strokes and having several near misses on goal. Our women dominated possession all game which has been a theme for their whole season. The women went out for a well-deserved celebratory drink after the game with them all agreeing that they should do it again next year!

Junior Round Up U15 Boys through to GF The Under 15 Boys will play in the Grand Final on Friday night after defeating Adelaide Uni 3-0 in the preliminary final.

Adelaide Uni were strong through the centre which ensured a tough and nail biting first half for the team.

6 Junior Round Up U15 Boys through to GF The Under 15 Boys will play in the Grand Final on Friday night after defeating Adelaide Uni 3-0 in the preliminary final. Nervous and a little excited, the team started exceptionally well, passing cleanly, quickly and to game plan. Adelaide Uni were strong through the centre which ensured a tough and nail biting first half for the team. An exceptional deflection from Oliver Rees resulted in the first goal and then a sneaky goal from Lucas Williams, with minutes to go in the first half, lifted the team going into the break. Good luck to all our junior team this week! The team was buoyant and a strong start to the second half gave them the courage to go for it; resulting in a big goal to Harrison Williams, which ultimately sealed the win. Continued shots on goal and multiple short corners saw Adelaide Uni unusually conceding defeat before the final siren. The win means going into their first Grand Final against the minor premiers Adelaide Blue. This will be a tough match but the team has matured and improved over the season, and will probably be the team that Adelaide have the most to fear, based on previous games and their current form. Good luck to the Under 15 Boys! Unfortunately it is season over for the Under 15 and Under 13 girl s teams, losing their preliminary final games to Seacliff. Both teams fought hard throughout the match and should be proud of their effort and how successful they have been this season.
