2 Session 1 Focus: To introduce students to a game they ve likely never seen before In classroom 0 Presenter(s) introduce themselves and the Austouch program and give brief outline of lesson plans. 5 Ipad/IT display of touch football. It may be the first time students have ever seen the game so some explanation will be needed: The aim of the game is to score a touchdown by placing the ball on or over the scoreline at the end of the field. Defensive players aim is to touch the ball carrier on any part of their person or clothing. Once their team has touched the opposition ball carrier 6 times, they win possession of the ball. When a defensive player makes a touch the attacking player must complete a rollball by placing the ball on the ground and passing heir body over the top of the ball. At the same time, each member of the defensive team must go back at least 5m from where the touch was made, in line with the referee before they are allowed to defend again. The attacking team can use many different tactics to spread or create holes in the defensive line so they can run past them. 20 Move to outside field 22 Define the touch football field and its markings to the students. Recap of where the game begins and where substitutes stand. 25 Split students ideally into teams of 6 (with more than 9 per team) and let them try playing Touch Football. Teams could be given the opportunity to talk as a team after each touchdown, or every 5 minutes to develop some tactics or to try and combat their opposition s tactics. 40 Students return to their ipads and are asked to write a few lines in response to the following two questions: What is your impression of the game of Touch Football? What are some tactics or techniques, either offensive or defensive, you might try and get your team to employ when you next play?

3 Session 2 Focus: To improve students technique passing the ball. To introduce new students to running forwards and passing backwards 0 The Flying V (see below) 15 2-on-1 (see below) 25 One Touch (see below) Ipad debrief 40 Students should write down any tips or techniques they learnt from touch football throughout this session. The Flying V 10m 5m 1 O 2 3 O * Cones should be as far apart as participants can comfortably throw Students line up equally behind the cones on the touchdown line (green). The person on the outside cones holds a football in their hands (marked with O) On the whistle, the first student standing on each cone runs quickly from their cone to the cone inside the touch football field. Each student rounds their cone and starts back towards the touchdown line. As they come back, the first person throws to the second, then the second to the third. The third player then has to race forwards to score a touchdown. The game is mirrored on the other side. After a few warm up goes, the game becomes competitive. The first team to score a legal touchdown scores a point. You can play best of 3/5/7. In most cases the red team will win the race as they are passing right handed, so the teams need to be swapped around and pass on the other side. You can choose which rules to enforce and which not too. You will need to judge the ability of the group to decide whether to enforce No ball to ground and No forward passing rules. In most situations we would not allow a point to be scored if the ball touched the ground, but wouldn t always stop a forward pass if it was encouraging players to run forward to receive the ball.

4 2-on-1 8m D D D D 7m O This is practicing a pressure situation for passing the ball. Students line up behind the red cones. The D s denote a volunteer player who acts s a defender. Players run in pairs and their aim is to beat the defender as they make their way down the gauntlet. The ball carrier should approach the defender and draw them in, that is to say have the defender run towards them, so that when they pass the ball to their friend, the defender cannot make the distance to touch the new ball carrier. The ball needs to be passed just at the right time, because if the defender gets too close they will be able to knock down the pass. The ball carrier should be told that if the defender doesn t come over to touch them they should run past them with the ball. In the first instance the defenders should be told to be passive and move towards the ball carrier every time. If the skill of the group allows, then defenders can decide whether to go for the ball carrier, try and knock the pass down, or maybe fake and then cover the pass receiver. The game can be used as a competition, each pair gets 1 turn to complete the gauntlet, if they get through they go on to next round, if they pass forwards or the ball is knocked down then they are eliminated.

5 One Touch 7-10m square A hybrid game, that is a great way to practicing all sorts of passing (long, short, under pressure, running..) The length of the field depends on the number of participants. For 8 or more per team you could play on a full touch field (70x50m) but can be adjusted depending on fitness and passing ability of players. The game is called One Touch because the defensive teams aim is simply to touch the ball carrier, if they do so they win possession of the ball. The attacking team passes the ball between players and advances the ball up the field. A player may run with the ball as far as they like. Their aim is to throw the ball onto a cone set in the middle of a square at their attacking end. The square should be about 4 or 5 steps back from the scoring cone. No player from either team is allowed in the square at any stage (other than to grab the ball if it stops in there). On a changeover of possession, all defensive players must move so they are 5m away from the first ball carrier and allow them to dispose of the ball. Other rules you may like to add: First pass must travel backwards. You can then make the first 2 passes travel backwards. You can limit the distance a person can run with the ball (i.e. a player may only travel for 5 steps or 5m, or hold it for 5 secs) You might allow players to throw at the scoring cone from in the square, but only if they are airborne. We often do this with boys groups. They may run flat out at the square, leap in the air and throw the ball at the scoring cone before they land. Inevitably they miss.) You may like to try and add in more Touch Football rules. Instead of making one touch a hand over you might say once a player is touched they must stop immediately and release the ball to a team mate. Teams could have 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 touches before this happens, the first pass after a touch must always be backwards. Then rather than have then just release the ball to a team mate, student have to complete a rollball (while defenders retreat 5-10m) to start the game after each touch. Debrief: Students need to come up with a variance to One Touch. What game skills were worked on throughout session 2.

6 Session 3 Focus: To introduce students to the rollball. Major focus on encouraging students to initiate the touch and complete a dynamic rollball (one where they are continually moving through the process.) Recap of previous session 0 Introduce the concept of the rollball. 5 Rollball relay 10 Rollball square relay 5 Touch Tiggy 15 Endzone Touch 10 ipad debrief Rollball relay O O O 8m A simple Relay race between teams, players line up evenly behind the Red and Purple cones. On the whistle the players run from the red cones towards their teammates on the purple. About the Green cone they must perform a rollball within the rules of touch football (must be facing forwards, ball must be placed on the ground and their body must pass over the ball) then run through and tag the next team member. That runner runs through and picks up the ball (a scoop) and passes it to the next runner as soon as they feel they can make the pass.

7 Rollball Square Relay Players line up behind the Green and Orange cone. Ideally you would have no more than 3 behind any cone, and set up as many grids as necessary. A player needs to stand on the red cones (they stay where they are), these players need only catch and release the ball and you can use injured, or out of uniform students here. I ll describe the path of the Orange player, as it is mirrored by the green. On the whistle they begin to run forwards and throw the ball to the person on the red cone, they get the ball straight back from that player (preferably before they have rounded the corner) and look at the person on the other red cone. An amount of awareness and communication is needed here as the other red cone person may still be returning the ball to the green player. When appropriate they throw the ball to the second red cone person and receive it back again (without running into green player!). As they (orange) run round the final corner, the first person now on the green cone moves slowly forwards off the line. The orange player runs to them, initiates the touch and completes a rollball. The orange player then continues to the back of the queue. After the touch is initiated on them, the green defender retreats back to the cone, before starting the circuit themselves. After completing a warm up go, each of the grids can compete against each other in a race, where the first players on each cone race to be back where they started. To initiate a touch a player needs to have the football in one hand, reach out with the other hand and touch the defender (preferably aiming for their core, rather than touching a limb) and complete the rollball one handed. Touch Tiggy A small group of players is chosen to be it. All but one or two of the it players have a football. When an it player tags someone, they must initiate the touch on them, and complete a rollball. Another it player must pickup the ball and run off and continue chasing players. Tagged players can either be eliminated, or play scarecrow tiggy rules Endzone Touch Is only a slight variation on One-touch. It is played on a normal Touch field (or any rectangular field). This time, rather than having a cone to hit, teams must designate one player who is allowed into the end zone, the team has to throw the ball to this player to score a touchdown. No other player is allowed in the end zone. This player doesn t need to move far, so injured or out of uniform students may be able to participate. The same rule variations can occur in this game about passing backwards, running with the ball etc

8 Session 4 Focus: To get the students to understand there are tactics to be used in defense as well as offense. To try and get students to defend in a straight line. To get students to understand the rules surrounding the touch. To highlight the importance of communication between defenders 10 1-on-1 (2 ways, see below) 10 Clap-clap (see below) 10 3-on-2 (1 or 2 ways, see below) 10 Beach Touch (sudden Death tournament, see below) 10 Ipad debrief 1-on-1 Drill 1 Players can be split into two teams or play individually. The players on the orange cone start with the ball, run to the end of the playing area and the run towards the touchdown line (in red) The defensive player, does this and runs from the touchdown line. The attacking player has to beat the defender 1-on-1, any way they can in order to score the try apart from kicking. The arena should be 5-10m wide, and about long, but can be changed. Drill 2 Attacking players line up behind the Orange gate. Defensive players line up behind the green cone. The Ball is placed on the ground between the orange cones. The defender cannot move until the attacker touches the ball. Once the attacker has the ball, they can score a try by placing the ball on the ground over either touchdown (red) line. Cones should be placed just far enough to make it a contest. Players can be encouraged to dive around, it s a great wet weather drill if you have a change of clothes!

9 Clap-Clap Players are split into two equal teams. One team spreads out along the touchdown line, they can only move laterally along the line. The attacking team is must start behind an imaginary line about 5m back from the try line (if using a touch field the 5m is perfect, if not cones define the line). On the whistle, the attacking team scores 1 point for every time they get 2 feet grounded across the touchdown line without being touched. Both teams get the same amount of time attacking the line. If a defender is touched at any stage, they must run back behind the 5m line and can attack again, same if a player scores. I like to give each team time to strategize as a team after each go and give each team at least 2 goes attacking/defending. After a couple of goes, a football is introduced to the attacking team. The person who gets the football over the line gets 5 points for their team, other players can still get 1 point. The ball may be thrown (backwards), but if it touches the ground it must be taken back behind 5m line Defensive teams should be encouraged to communicate as a team. If each defender communicates who they are trying to touch at that time then no one should be left over to score, but defenders regularly will have to swap who they are guarding. These changes only work if there is communication. When the football is added, the defending teams nearly always bunch up around the football, leaving a lot of space at the edge of the field, where clever players score multiple points. Let students do this and then ask them to identify where there is space in the game, and therefore where could they move the football to make ground down the field, or find space to score a touch down? 3-on-2 12m 20m Players all line up on the corner cone. Players need to be sorted into 3 Attackers, and 2 defenders (they should be able to do this themselves, but may need some assistance). On the whistle the attacking team (green) run up around the top cone,() spread out and attack back towards the Touchdown line (orange). The defensive team run to the middle of their defensive line, they need to be held here until the attackers are in position to attack, the simplest way to do this is to make defenders do a few pushups before they can defend. The attackers then try to score a touchdown in the 3-on-2 situation. Usually they have no touches to score. As soon as one group finishes they should clear out of the space and the next group begins.

10 3-on-2 Drill 2. *Advanced drill, The dashed line is the 5m line, and the solid is the try line. The drill should be set up 2-5 steps back from the 5m line, the further back it is, the easier it is for the attackers. Cones should be as wide apart as players can comfortably pass, they can be brought in closer together to make it more difficult for the defenders. The balls can start on either purple cone and the drill should be reversed at some point so players pass on both sides. The people on the Purple cones don t really participate in the drill. Teacher/coaches can stand there, or you can rotate players through the cones. The red cone players will be defenders, the green cone players will be attackers The ball starts with one of the coaches on the purple cone. The red cone players start to move off their cones towards the try line, (orange) the coach on the purple cone throws the ball to the nearest red player, who throws to the next player passes it further on to coach 2, the defenders keep running forwards to the try line, then turn around and begin defending. When coach 2 has the ball, the green players begin moving off their cones, Coach two passes the ball to the nearest attacker as quickly as they can (the more space there is between the ball carrier and the defense, the easier it is to make a decision about who to throw the ball too.) The attackers then have to try and beat the defense and score a touchdown. It is best if the attackers each run in a straight line, as wide from each other as possible so as to make the defenders try and cover as much ground as possible. There are only 2 defenders so one player has to be open at any time. The ball carrier then just needs to pass the ball to the open team mate (or run and score themselves). Sounds simple! Defenders would normally come off the line and cover the ball carrier, and the person next to the ball carrier, making the attacking team carry out the most difficult play possible. Beach Touch A great game for smaller numbers, and is a fantastic cardio workout! The game can be played in any rectangular area but work perfectly on a basketball court (29x15m). Players are split into two teams (of at least 4, no more than 8) who should substitute from opposite sides of the field. Teams play touch football rules with the following exception The attacking team always has 4 players on the field, the defending only 3. Any time there is a turnover, the defensive team needs to quickly nominate and drop one player. When touched, a player must immediately stop, then tap the ball on the ground and pass it to a teammate. They may not run with the ball or it is turned over. All other touch specific rules apply and teams get back 3m on defence. This game can be self-officiated.

11 Session 5 Focus: To teach students some tactics to help them play touch football. To give them some structure to play touch football. 20 The buddy demonstration, simple practice, practice against defender, game situation. 20 The Scoop - demonstration, simple practice, practice against defender, scoop game 10 ipad debrief write some notes to help them remember these skills for the Matchplay and tournament in lesson 7 & 8 The Buddy Is a simple two man move that can be used at either end of the field with a very slight difference. Players should first be taught it as a move they can do on the first touch they receive the ball, in an effort to get the ball moving quickly forwards up the field. Player 1 steps over the ball and immediately to the side, player 2 picks up the ball from half, takes one step forwards (enough to get in front of player 1) and releases the ball to player 1 who runs forwards and initiates a touch on the defender, player 2 is half again. The next stage is to use the above principle for attacking moves and can be completed in groups of 2 attackers vs 2 defenders. The Scoop The Scoop is a high risk attacking play, run late in the touch count to try and break through the defensive line. It relies on an attacking player to get a good rollball, preferably on the side of a defender. The scooper then picks up the ball and runs forwards as fast as they can, their aim is to run past the defender and break the line. They can achieve this as the defender is usually running backwards and cannot keep up with them as they run forwards. The scooper is dummy half so cannot score a try, to complete the scoop they should run across the try line and then change their angle and look for a team mate to pass to so they can score the touchdown.

12 Scoop Game A A A A A Sc D1 o D6 D5 D2 D3 D4 Players are split into two teams, and the game is played on a full touch football field width. A cone is placed about 10m () from the try line next to a ball (o). The game is set up with the attacking team (green) spreading out across the field and the defenders (red) each standing opposite an attacker. Defender D1 lays on the ground facing the far end of the field. Player Sc picks up the ball and does a scoop. The defenders are not allowed to move until the scooper touches the ball. The scooper is to run as fast as they can and cross the scoreline, (purple) once they cross the scoreline they can begin looking for a teammate to score the touchdown. Teammates may run all over to try and get away from their defender and score the touchdown, defenders have to do their best to try and stop the ball getting to their player, or to touch them once they have it.

13 Session 6 Focus: To teach students some tactics to help them play touch football. To give them some attacking structure to play touch football. 20 The Switch - demonstration, simple practice, practice against defender, game situation. 20 The wrap/loop - demonstration, simple practice, practice against defender, game situation. 10 ipad debrief write notes to help them remember these skills for session 7 & 8 The Switch Is a move to change the direction of the play to try and beat a defender and score, or to create an overlap (a situation where there are more attacking players than defenders). Player one runs with the ball to the outside of their defender, making them chase them to one side. Player 2, switches behind them, changing the direction of attack and running back where the defender came from. Because the defender is chasing and moving in the direction player 1 is moving they are not able to change direction quickly enough to chase player 2 back the other way. 14 The Wrap (or loop) Another move that attempts to create an overlap for the attacking team. A very simple play, where player 1 passes the ball to player 2, runs around behind player 2 and receives the ball back from them. A1O A2 A3 D1 D2 D3 O = football A2O A1 A3 D2 D3 Extension to this is to combine all strategic moves into 1 and get kids to do each move as they progress up the field and then give them the choice of move against 1 defender.

15 Session 7 Focus: To give the students a chance to put all their skills into practice in a controlled, non competitive environment 10 Recap of skills and tactics from al previous weeks. 35 Players split into 2-3 teams (no more than 8 per team) 5-10 minutes periods of game play, with coaching/tips provided for the team that is off the field 5 ipad time for players to make notes on tactics before the tournament Session 8 Focus: Give Players match experience in a competitive environment. Players split into teams of 7 to 9 and play a round robin tournament. Matches will be minute touchdown turnaround (each time a team scores, the other team gets the ball, and teams swap direction of play). If 4 teams are playing matches will be played at the same time. A final will be played between the two best sides, if time is short it can be Sudden Death (first score wins)
