6 LAST TIME OUT: [9/8] DENVER 0-2 CSUN USEN JR. S SECOND-HALF BRACE SENDS CSUN PAST [9/8] DENVERPI- ONEERS RETURN HOME NEXT WEEKEND TO TAKE ON UC DAVIS (9/15) AND SAINT MARY S (9/17) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The [9/8] University of Denver men s soccer team dropped a 2-0 result to CSUN on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. We re a bit unfortunate to have 19 shots, 21 crosses and seven corners and not get a win, head coach Jamie Franks said. We didn t give up too much defensively, but at the end of the day, we need guys to make plays. Soccer is a funny sport, it doesn t always go your way when you create those chances, and that s what this group is going through right now. We ll look to remain resilient, especially during times of adversity like this. The group will be stronger on the other side when we come out of it. I think Alex Underwood and Graham Smith are finding out a lot about themselves as they continue to develop as leaders, especially in these times, and they ll grow from that. Like I said on Friday night, I trust in my leaders, and we ll come out of this and be better from it. The two teams went into the locker room scoreless, with Denver outshooting CSUN 8-5, and forcing opposing goalkeeper Henrik Regitnig into the only four saves of the opening 45 minutes. Emmanuel Usen Jr. s second and third goals of the season came in the second half, seconds less than 13 minutes apart. The Matadors opener came off an assist from Daniel Trejo. Usen Jr received a pass from Trejo and smashed it into the roof of the net from 11 yards out. The CSUN goal scorer doubled the Matadors advantage in the 74th, finishing from in-tight on the right wing. Denver took 19 of the 29 shots in the match and seven of the 10 corner kicks on Sunday afternoon. BREAKING DOWN DENVER S 2017 SCHEDULE Denver will host eight regular season matches in 2017, including hosting six of its first eight non-league matches at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Denver will take on nine opponents that finished in the top-100 of the RPI a year ago, including three in the top-36. Five of the Pioneers 2017 opponents booked a trip to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. To beat anybody, in any condition, in any circumstance, on any given day is our mission, Jamie Franks said. To be able to play some of these big opponents at home to start the season is great for us. DU Soccer Stadium is a wonderful venue for a college soccer game. Overall, from top to bottom, this schedule will present different adversities and challenges that will force us to learn and mature. I think it ll really test our group as we prepare for our league schedule, and ultimately getting back to where we were last year, playing knock-out style games in late November and December. DENVER CONTINUES PARTNERSHIP WITH ALTITUDE SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT The Pioneers will have 15 fall sports games on Altitude in 2017, including five men s soccer matches. DU s first four men s soccer home matches were featured on Altitude or Altitude 2. Bill Rogan and Conor McGahey will share the play-by-play duties for the men s program, while Chris Bianchi will serve as the program s primary analyst for the third-straight season. 18 2017 BOX SCORES DENVER The striking partnership of junior Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and redshirt-senior Blake Elder (Fort Worth, Texas) combined for three goals to lead the [3/4] University of Denver men s soccer team past [23/15] Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Shinyashiki s brace is his second in a season opener in his three years with the Pioneers, also finding the back of the net twice on opening night in 2015 against UC Riverside. Friday night s win extends Denver s regular season unbeaten run to 36 matches, dating back to Halloween night, Denver also improved to at home in its last 44 competitive matches. Shinyashiki gave Denver its opening goal just shy of the nine minute mark. Redshirt-senior Kyle Morlack (Goodyear, Ariz.) chipped it in behind the Eagles backline for Shinyashiki, who smashed a one-time volley into the twine to give Denver the early breakthrough. DU scored just twice in the opening quarter hour a year ago. Just shy of 10 minutes later, FGCU s Nicolas Samayoa found the equalizer off a corner kick near-post service from Dennis Zapata. Samayoa s glancing header tucked into the far-post side netting to level the match for the visitors. DENVER - On his Pioneer debut, redshirt-junior Jacob Hanlin (Denver, Colo.) drew a penalty kick in the 45th minute that senior co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) converted to send the [3/4] University of Denver men s soccer team past [16/20] Akron 1-0 on Monday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Denver extended its regular season unbeaten run, dating back to Halloween, 2014, to 37 matches. Both Denver captains were involved in the lone tally of the match. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) played a ball over the top of the Akron backline from the midfield stripe to the run of Hanlin. A Portland transfer, and brother of former Pioneer Karsten Hanlin, Jacob Hanlin got a touch past the keeper and was tripped up by Ben Lundt just inside the box forcing referee Nikola Aleksic to point to the spot. Smith fired the spot kick past Lundt with 21 seconds left in the first half. Akron had the majority of the possession in the final 45 minutes, but Denver s defense limited the Zips quality chances. Despite the possession, Akron had just a 6-2 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes, and only Manuel Cordeiro forced Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) into an impressive save in the 59th minute. The first half featured just four combined shots and four corners. Redshirt-junior Nick Gardner (Marvin, N.C.) was only called upon to make two saves on Friday, both of which came in the 53rd minute. Samayoa was looking for his second on a long-range free kick that was hit with pace and deflected by a Denver defender. Gardner stayed patient and reacted well to get a hand on the deflection, and got up quickly to save the follow-up attempt from Shak Adams to keep things at 1-1. Freshman outside back Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) and redshirt freshman Dylan Keeney (Littleton, Colo.) both made their Pioneer debuts off the bench for third-year head coach Jamie Franks. Denver got a restart goal of its own in the 73rd minute to take the lead back at 2-1. Senior co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) played the ball into the penalty area from the right channel, 10 yards into his attacking half. Redshirt-sophomore centerback Dan Mooney (Indianapolis, Ind.) flicked an Eagles failed clear to the feet of Elder who riffled a shot past FGCU s Jared Brown to put the Pioneers back on top. Shinyashiki ran onto a miss-touched pass in the 78th minute and scored from outside the 18 on his first touch to give Denver a two-goal cushion. 18 DENVER MEN S SOCCER
