1 HAVERFORD SOCCER CLUB COACHING MANUAL UNDER 7 8-WEEK PROGRAM

2 WEEK 1 5 MINS. Body Parts. Dribble ball inside a 20x20 yd grid and players stop ball with a particular body part upon the coach s command. (For example, the coach yells knee, the players all stop the ball with their knee and then continue on the coach s command). 5 MINS. Inside Roll. Roll the ball across your body from outside to inside with the inside and sole of the foot and stop the ball with the inside of the other foot. Do this twice, that is one set. Perform 5 sets with each foot. Outside Roll. Roll the ball across your body from inside to outside with the outside and sole of the foot and stop the ball with the inside of the same foot. Do this twice, that is one set. Perform 5 sets with each foot. 10 MINS. Gates. Split the players in half. One team without a ball randomly spreads out in a 30x30 yd grid and stands with their legs spread apart (a little more than shoulder width). Each player from the other team has a ball and dribbles around the grid trying to touch their ball thru as many legs as possible. This event should be 2 minutes and the players should remember how many legs they split. The teams will then switch roles to determine which team split more legs. Repeat 2 or 3 times. * Homework practice Inside Roll and Outside Roll 5 sets each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

3 WEEK 2 10 MINS. Hospital Tag. Coaches are it. Players dribble around the field trying not to be tagged. If tagged, the player must hold the tagged body part with a hand (e.g., if tagged on the right elbow, the player holds the right elbow with his/her left hand) while continuing to dribble. If a player is tagged a second time, he or she must hold that body part with the other hand while continuing to dribble. If the player is tagged a third time, he or she goes to the hospital a designated space outside of the dribbling area. At the hospital, the player performs 5 Inside Rolls and 5 Outside Rolls to heal all injuries. Once healed, the player can rejoin the game. 5 MINS. Side to Side Push-Pull. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock tap ball forward with one foot and pull it back with the sole of the opposite foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Side to Side Step-On. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock roll ball to outside with the sole of foot by stepping lightly on the ball, then tap the ball back to the inside with the inside of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Side to Side Front Roll. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock tap ball forward then pull the ball across your body with the front part of the sole. Repeat 5 times with each foot. * Homework practice Side to Side Push-Pull, Side to Side Step-On, and Side to Side Front Roll 5 times each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

4 WEEK 3 10 MINS. Pull Instep Push. Push ball forward and pull it back with the sole of foot, then tap ball forward with the instep (shoelaces) of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Pull a Vee. Push ball forward and pull it back with the sole of the foot while turning (about 90 degrees) and then take the ball with the inside of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Pull & Take with Outside of Foot. Push ball forward and pull it back with the sole of the foot, then push the ball diagonally forward with the outside of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Pull & Roll Behind. Push ball forward and pull it back with the sole of the foot, then pass the ball behind your other leg (standing leg) with the inside of the foot. Control the ball with the sole of the other foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. 10 MINS. Stuck in the Mud. Players dribble in a 30x30 grid with one tagger without a ball. If a player is tagged by the tagger, he/she is stuck in the mud and must hold ball over their head and stand with legs spread apart. Stuck players can only become unstuck if a teammate dribbles the ball through the stuck.. * Homework practice Pull Instep Push, Pull a Vee, Pull & Take with Outside of Foot, and Pull & Roll Behind 5 times each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

5 WEEK 4 5 MINS. Inside Roll. Roll the ball across your body from outside to inside with the inside and sole of the foot and stop the ball with the inside of the other foot. Do this twice, that is one set. Perform 5 sets with each foot. Outside Roll. Roll the ball across your body from inside to outside with the outside and sole of the foot and stop the ball with the inside of the same foot. Do this twice, that is one set. Perform 5 sets with each foot. 10 MINS. 2 Squares. Half the players dribble in one half of the field and the rest of the players dribble in the other half of the field. (1) Upon coach s command, the players must switch grids (dribble their ball into the other grid and try to avoid collisions). (2) Now, upon the coach s command, the players leave their ball, switch grids, and find another ball to continue dribbling in that grid. Throughout this game, players should be dribbling and practicing ball control techniques learned thus far to avoid collisions. 40 MINS. Scrimmage with water breaks and substitutions. * Homework practice Inside Roll and Outside Roll 5 sets each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

6 WEEK 5 5 MINS. Side to Side Push-Pull. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock tap ball forward with one foot and pull it back with the sole of the opposite foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Side to Side Step-On. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock roll ball to outside with the sole of foot by stepping lightly on the ball, then tap the ball back to the inside with the inside of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. Side to Side Front Roll. Tap ball back and forth with inside of feet, after 3 rd tick-tock tap ball forward then pull the ball across your body with the front part of the sole. Repeat 5 times with each foot. 15 MINS. Follow the Leader. Players divide into pairs, each player with a ball. One player is the leader and the other is the follower. The leader dribbles the ball in all directions within the field. The follower tries to imitate what the leader does. Every minute, change leaders. Every two minutes, change partners. The leaders should also be encouraged to perform ball control techniques learned thus far. * Homework practice Side to Side Push-Pull, Side to Side Step-On, and Side to Side Front Roll 5 times each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

7 WEEK 6 10 MINS. Pull Instep Push. Push ball forward and pull it back with the sole of foot, then tap ball forward with the instep (shoelaces) of the same foot. Repeat 5 times with each foot. The players all dribble within the grid and perform action based on coach s command. Green light means the players dribble at a fast pace, yellow light means the players dribble at a slow pace, red light means the players all stop their ball. The players could also practice their turning here. * Homework practice Pull Instep Push, Pull a Vee, Pull & Take with Outside of Foot, and Pull & Roll Behind 5 times each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

8 WEEK 7 10 MINS. Turns. Each player has a ball and they all line up on the sideline (spread out). Each player will dribble the ball for 7 yds and then turn, go back to original line, turn and repeat with the following types of turns: Inside Cut at the line, the player should reach out his/her right foot and cut the ball back using the inside of their right foot. This should be a 180 degree turn (turn to the left). Continue several times then try with left foot (turn to the right). Outside Cut at the line, the player should reach out his/her right foot and cut the ball back using the outside of their right foot. This should be a 180 degree turn (turn to the right). Continue several times then try with left foot (turn to the left). Pull Back at the line, the player should reach out his/her right foot and pull the ball back using the sole of their right foot. This should be a 180 degree turn and they should turn in the direction of the ball (their foot constantly is in contact with the ball during the turn turn to the right). Continue several times then try with left foot. 10 MINS. Speed Dribbling. Players dribble around the space of the field. One the command Go! players dribble around one of the goals as quickly as they can. They then return to the middle of the space and continue dribbling. * Homework practice turns (Inside Cut, Outside Cut, and Pull Back) 5 times each foot every day (should take less than 5 min).

9 WEEK 8 15 MINS. Relay Race. Divide the players into 3 or 4 teams (no more than 4 players per team). Setup a relay race where players must dribble between domes, around cones, perform Hat Dance, etc. Vary events to make it fun. First group to finish wins. Repeat 3-4 times. 40 MINS. Scrimmage with water breaks and substitutions.
