Hargreaves, Year 11 Leader, writes: In preparation for the Year 11 core mock exams from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd March, students will be participating in Let's Get Ready week. The week commencing Monday March 12th will be full of tutor time activities and focussed revision sessions which will help students prepare for their busy week ahead. Students will be given a chance to create a personalised revision timetable and will be given materials which offer suggestions on how they can get the most out of their revision time. As always, period six sessions are open to all students on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Please also note that immediately after the Easter study break, period seven will start. Period seven is where students are ed exam questions from individual core subjects EVERYDAY until the exam, to support them with their revision at home. Please ensure your child confirms they can access their school account in advance of this starting. As part of Let's Get Ready Week, students will also receive their own brand new folders, post-it notes, pens and highlighters to help them prepare engaging revision notes. Best of luck to all of the Year 11s in their upcoming mock exams! Year 10 Work Experience 19 th 23 rd March 2018 Mrs Ahmad, Student Career and Enterprise Leader, writes: All students should now know their placement details and have all the information they need to ensure they arrive on time, are dressed appropriately and know what duties they are expected to carry out during the week. They must ensure they take their work experience journals with them each day and complete this daily. Information to support your child during the week can be found on VLE Careers Year 10 work experience. Please ensure you inform the school and the placement should your child not attend a day for any reason.
STEM News STEM News STEM News STEM News STEM News STEM News STEM News Rotary Technology Tournament Mr M. Beevor, Design and Technology, writes: The Design and Technology department took three teams to Onslow St Audrey s School to participate in the annual Rotary Technology Tournament. Students in the teams were from Year 8, Year 9 and Year 13. The task set was to fire a plastic ball three metres vertically in a plastic cup by building a wooden frame and using only rubber bands for propulsion. They had to design a release system and present a design portfolio. The Year 9 and 13 students also had to incorporate a parachute into their design. The Year 8 team worked quickly and had built and tested their design before any of the other 20 teams. Further testing resulted in a working design. Overall they came second in the competition, losing out on first place by two points. The Year 9 and Year 13 teams faced a more difficult task and both managed finished designs but lacked consistency when trying to deploy the parachute. It was a very challenging day and all students worked well as a team and enjoyed the competitive experience. National Careers Week 5 th 9 th March 2018 Mrs Ahmad, Student Career and Enterprise Leader, writes: The aim of National Careers Week is to raise students awareness of careers. As always, but more prominently this week, teachers have been focussing on careers within their subjects to contextualise learning taking place in lessons. We have had guest speakers in assemblies and students have had the opportunity to hear from staff about their career plans and pathways. Support your child s awareness of careers by speaking to them about your past and present jobs. Have a look at our VLE careers for more great links providing up to date information on all careers and follow us on for up-to-date job and training opportunities and news.
Mr P. Harris, Curriculum Leader: PE, writes: Sports Report 19th February - 7th March Congratulations to Louise Grenfell who has successfully qualified for the National Cross Country Championships! Louise qualified after finishing 5 th in the County Championships which took place in St Albans. Louise has also qualified to represent Hertfordshire at the indoor National Athletics championships. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to hearing how she gets on! Boys Football Stanborough s Year 9s became the first year group to qualify for the District Finals after beating Onslow 6-0 on Tuesday. Mr Moore s team had qualified top of their group after going unbeaten in their campaign. The first half was a close affair but Stanborough got their noses in front when Michael Rodriguez scored. Luke Laurence ensured that Stanborough went into the break with a superb stop in goal, thwarting a certain goal. Mr Moore made some changes in the second half and new student Daniel Gilmore made an instant impact driving into the Onslow box before passing to Luca Vullo who curled his shot past the despairing Onslow keeper. Onslow had to push on and with the gaps opening up Stanborough fully exploited the opportunity. Goals were added by Bailey Cripps, Michael Rodriguez again and Zack Read. Stanborough now look forward to the final in two weeks time. Stanborough Year 7s finished off their season with a hard fought win against Onslow. Stanborough took the lead through Harry Western while Darcey Palmer kept his cool in a one on one to score Stanborough s second. Moments before half time a mix up in the Stanborough box allowed Onslow back into the game as the sides went in at 2-1 for the interval. Etson Fernando fired in Stanborough s 3 rd shortly after the break to restore their two goal advantage, however that was not the end of the game as Onslow poured forward at every opportunity. Fortunately for Stanborough, Ben Saunders was in fine form and pulled off a number of fine saves to keep the score at 3-1. Stanborough will unlikely qualify for the semi finals after defeats to Monk s Walk and Chancellors earlier in the campaign. Stanborough s Year 8s went into their fixture at Onslow knowing that the winning team would qualify for the semi final. Unfortunately Stanborough fell two goals down very quickly due to some fantastic play by Onslow s forwards and were always chasing the game. They conceded a few more goals as they pushed to get back into the fixture but unfortunately they could not force the win they needed and will now have to wait until next year. Good luck to the Year 10s who play Yavneh and the Year 11s who play Chancellors in their semi finals this week. Girls Netball Stanborough s Year 7 and 8 team had a tough week as they travelled away to Dame Alice Owen s on Monday. The girls put on a good display but were always up against it playing the district champions. The Year 7s played with a great attitude throughout despite the heavy defeat and Abby Cavill was named as Girl of the Game. The Year 8 team faired slightly better in their game and for long period looked like they might take an unlikely victory, however the final quarter saw Dame Alice Owen s stretch their lead and run out comfortable winners. Emma Hudson was named Girl of the Game. Year 7 Year 8 Dame Alice Owen s 17-2 Stanborough Dame Alice Owen s 12-5 Stanborough
Alex Baxter, 12B, writes: VEX Robotics 2018 National Championship Whilst the Beast from the East was fighting Storm Emma, last weekend saw Stanborough s own Shark Robotics do battle with the country s top robotics teams at the two day VEX UK National 2018 Championships. Following on from previous year s successes, the newly formed team of Alex Wright (10A) and Charlie Earnshaw (10A) had managed to secure entry to the prestigious end of year finale by winning their previous regional qualifying event. The qualified teams were due to fight it out at the renowned Telford International Centre, However, the snowy conditions meant that only 34 out of the 60 scheduled participating teams actually managed to arrive. After leaving Stanborough at 5.15am, the team, along with mentors Alex Baxter (12B) and Matt Schofield arrived in good spirits ready to perform in the day s qualifying matches. It was the first time this team had competed at such a high level; regardless of their lack of experience the Shark s fought bravely, managing to win four of their matches and were on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages. Unfortunately, they were hampered by technical issues which meant they didn t finish as high as they would have liked. At the end of the day the team finally managed to get through the snow and find their hotel. After seeing the technical difficulties that they had during the day, the team worked through the night to successfully rebuild their robot and get it working again. The final day saw the all important alliance selection process whereby the Sharks would find out if they had progressed to the final knockout stages of the competition. After some tense negotiations they were joined with two other teams and selected to play in the quarter finals. After two tense games and some unfortunate malfunctions with the robots, the team was unfortunately knocked out in the quarter finals. However, huge congratulations to the team who have achieved a great deal in getting that far in their first year of competing. A big thank you needs to go to Matt Schofield and Mr Benzid for all their help and support throughout the year. As well as this, we would also like to thank OCADO TECHNOLOGY for sponsoring the team during the season. We are pleased to report that our students and staff raised for the Poppy Appeal Parking Can we please request that parents / carers do not park across residents' drives around Stanborough School when dropping students off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon. We would also ask that you do not use the entrances to the staff car parks to drop students off as this also causes disruption. Thanks for helping to make our local community a safe and pleasant place to be.
Sports Leader/Team Captain 2017/18 Emma Clark 10S (A Team) Tell us about your role and what it involves? I am the Year 10 netball captain and I have been now for three years. Why do you like being a team captain? I like being team captain because it allows me to show people how passionate about netball I am. I love playing with my team mates, there is never a dull moment in training or in a game. What do you hope to bring to the role? For all KS4 Students I hope my positivity and courage allow my team to have fun as well as trying to win the game ahead. I try and be encouraging and positive when team mates mess up and I lead by example. What have you enjoyed the most about being a sports leader/team captain? I have enjoyed making new friends and being able to grow in confidence on the court and elsewhere. Tell us about your hobbies/interests/ hopes for the future. My favourite thing to do in my spare time is to horse ride! Not only do I grow a bond with my horse, but I enjoy riding him and even mucking him out! When I m older I hope to be an equestrian.
