2 Basketball Objectives Use both hands when dribbling. Keep control when bouncing the ball at different heights. Show awareness when in control of the ball. Change speed with control of the ball. Recognise space on the pitch. Change direction with the ball.

3 Children start with a basketball each. On the teacher s whistle children start bouncing the ball on the spot. On the next whistle children catch the ball. Encourage children to push the ball rather than slap the ball when bouncing. Encourage children to start moving around the area provided whilst keeping the ball bouncing. Encourage children to stand up straight when bouncing the ball. Can children perform a spin when they reach a space. Can children perform 10 low bounces when they reach a space. Can children lie down then stand up whilst bouncing the ball when they reach a space. Can children show some of their own skills each time they find a space. Children now travel through the red cones when free from other children. Ask children to go through cones backwards. Can children create new ideas to travel through the red cones. Ask children to show a change of speed when travelling through red cones. After travelling through red cones ask children to swap balls with a child with a different colour to themselves whilst keeping the ball bouncing.

4 Children play 1 v 1. Children take turns to start with the ball. To score a point children need to dribble past the child and through the cones. The game restarts after a point has been won or the ball stops bouncing. Encourage children to dribble with their head up. Can children win possession of the ball and keep it bouncing. Challenge some groups to play 2v2.

5 Children are split into small groups. Without a ball one child from each line runs around the red cone then back to their line. Once back the next child can set off around the red cone. Change the way children travel to and back from the red cone. Introduce a ball for each line. Children now bounce the ball around the red cone Encourage children to keep the ball bouncing whilst trying to swap over. Change the way children travel to and back from the red cone whilst bouncing the basketball. Encourage children to use alternate hands when bouncing the ball. Remove the red cones from the middle. Children now travel around the child from the opposite line before retuning back to their line. Once children have travelled around their partner can they race back to their line. Can children now swap balls in the middle then return back to their line. Can children travel around their partner then play a bounce pass to their line. Can children travel around their partner then join the opposite line. Children can now play 1v1. One child starts with the ball, they must try and get past the opposite player and past the opposition line to win the ball. If the opposition player wins the ball then they try to dribble past the opposition line.

6 Children play 1 v 1. Children take turns to start with the ball. To score a point children need to dribble past the child and through the cones. 7 Children are split into three teams. Children start by jogging on the spot behind their cone. On the whistle red team move forward to the yellow cones, yellows move forward to the blue cones and the blue team runs all the way back to the red cones Change the way children wait at cones and change the way children travel to their next cone. Children receive a ball each. Children must keep the ball bouncing until the teacher blows the whistle. On the whistle children change cones whilst keeping the ball bouncing. Once children reach the cones they must keep the ball bouncing and wait for the whistle. Children to travel sideways to their next cone when the teacher blows the whistle. Keep changing the way children wait at the cones. Example, low bounces, bouncing round the cone or sit down then stand up whilst bouncing the basketball. Instead of blowing the whistle children now move to the next cone when the teacher raises their hand. Encourage children to look forward as well as down when bouncing the ball. Choose one child to be in charge of when children change cones. This child changes whenever they want. As soon as this child changes cones the rest of the group should change their cones. This will now help children to look forward as well as backwards and sideways. Keep changing the child in charge of the switch.

8 Children play 2v2. Children take turns to start with the ball. To score a point children need to dribble past the oppositions white line. If the opposition win the ball then they can try and dribble past the opposite white line. Encourage children to dribble with their head up. Can children win possession of the ball and keep it bouncing. The game restarts after a point has been won or the ball stops bouncing. Encourage children to start the game with a pass.

9 Children stand in a space with their eyes closed. The teacher walks around the hall and pats a child on the head. This child will be the tagger. On the teacher s whistle children start to move around the area carefully staying away from everyone else. If the tagger secretly tags a child they must sit down on the spot and wait till the game finishes. This game should be played in complete silence. If all the class quickly realise who the tagger is then the game can be restarted with a new tagger. Split the children into small teams. Each child receives a ball each except one team (yellow team in the picture). This team tries to run around the area knocking balls out of the square. If a child has their ball knocked out of the square they must retrieve their ball then dribble around the outside of the square until all the other children lose their ball. Yellow team have 1 minute to complete the game. Change the defending team after each game. Challenge some children on the defending team by giving them a ball to bounce as they try to push other children s balls out of the square. Defending team can only try to push another child's ball out for 3 seconds. If they are unsuccessful after 3 seconds they must move to a different child. Encourage children bouncing balls to find space away from the defending team.

10 Children play 1v1. On the teacher s whistle one child from each line can play. Blue team start with the ball and must try and dribble the ball through either of the blue cones. Children in red try to win the ball then score by dribbling the ball through the red cones. If there is no winner after 40 seconds the game finishes in a draw. Encourage children to keep the ball bouncing whilst trying to pass the defending child. Encourage children to dribble fast when passing the defending child. When a child has attempted attacking then they join the defending teams line.

11 In pairs children receive four different coloured cones and a ball. Children take turns to dribble around all four cones before swapping over. Children must return to the middle before dibbling to the next cone. Example, dribble to red, middle, blue, middle, pink, middle, yellow then back to the middle. Children must face their partner when dribbling around each cone. This will challenge children to dribble forwards, backwards and sideways. Encourage children to keep eye contact with their partner as much as possible when travelling to each cone. The child without the ball now shouts out the colour they want their partner to travel to. Children must still return to the middle after each cone. Challenge pairs to shout out colours at the appropriate speed. If their partner shouts red they can now dribble around any cone apart from red. Can change this game from colours to North, East, South and West.

12 Children play 2v2. Children take turns to start with the ball. To score a point children need to dribble past the oppositions white line. Can children win possession of the ball and keep it bouncing. The game restarts after a point has been won or the ball stops bouncing. Encourage children to start the game with a pass.

13 Split children into teams of three or four. Children play on small pitches with small zones at the end of each pitch. To score a point/goal children need to dribble past the opposition and into these zones. Children only receive a point it they still have the ball under control when they enter the zone. If the ball goes off the court then a opposition child retrieves the ball and places it on the spot where the ball went out and plays a pass to a teammate. After 5 minutes change teams around so each team gets to play against a new side. Set team challenges. Example, win the ball back within 10 seconds, complete two passes before scoring. Encourage and remind children of any technical parts of the lessons completed in recent weeks Set individual challenges. Example, set a teammate up to score, complete five passes during the game, win the ball back in the opponents half.
