1 NECPO News Official News Letter of the North East Classic Pattern Organization Volume 1 December 31, 2012 Issue 2 Welcome to NECPO News! In this issue we have several contributions from some of our members. Thanks to everyone that contributed! Lets jump right in! A Message from Paul First off I d like to wish everyone Happy New Year 2013! We keep seeing NECPO grow slowly but surely, the recent national exposure given to us in Model Airplane News has boosted NECPO'S credibility and reached many for the first time. We will continue striving to get the word out and reach new pilots/ modelers and find our old brothers that have been waiting for the rebirth of what Classic Pattern was. One main goal should be to mainstream this aspect of the Hobby to our fellow modelers at the local clubs. Keep Spreading the word Guys! We want to thank all the members that took the time to fill out the recent event questionnaire. Your responses and comments have given us the information needed to plan the next foreseeable events for I d also like to ask any that want to help with the inner workings of NECPO to grow, please step up and contact Ralph Geese or myself. We need to formalize NECPO and start strategising for the future. We have big plans but only if there is support from working members. We Need You! 2 1st Annual NECPO Fly In The 1st Annual NECPO Fly In was held on September 8, Unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate at all for this event. The rain came in around noon with wind gusts to 25mph which resulted in a low turn out and the Fly In was cut short. The folks that did stop by all seemed to have enjoyed themselves. CD Rick Bell did a masterful job of demonstrating the new Dirty Birdy ARF for the small crowd before the rain started. The Dirty Birdy appeared to handle the high winds very well. Several favorable comments were made in regard to the purpose and direction of NECPO and we even picked up a few new members. It was very encouraging to hear these comments. In spite of the bad weather and low turn out, this was a successful event. The future of NECPO is bright. Plans are already in the works for next year's event and hopefully the weather will be much better. Special thanks goes out to Rick Bell for his CD efforts and to the Central Connecticut R/C Club for hosting this event. Looking forward to the next one! More Fly In photos can be seen here. Page 2

3 Jeff Wilson's latest project, a Bridi Vagabond We received this from Jeff a while back and we're happy to see some young blood enjoying the Classic Pattern experience. Hi Ralph, I really enjoyed the newsletter. In fact, the article on the tiporare prompted me to put one on my list of planes to build. I thought I would submit what I am currently working on to the NECPO. I am currently building a Bridi Vagabond. I don t know a whole lot about this plane other than it is very similar to a Kaos. From what I can tell, the only major differences are the tail is slightly different and the fuselage has a turtle deck. I wanted to let everyone know that I am building this model so that I could possibly find out some more information on it. I am a younger modeler who was not alive during the classic pattern days but I ve been flying for about ten years and recently fell in love with classic pattern planes. So for me, getting into this aspect of the hobby is more discovery of the older days of RC pattern rather than remembering them. I ve loved everything that I ve learned so far about classic pattern but unfortunately, I have not been able to find a whole lot of information about my classic pattern plane. I am doing a build thread on RCU and I m sharing the link with you for consideration for the newsletter. It s OK if you decide not to share as you are probably getting a lot of submissions but I wanted to share my classic pattern experience with the community if possible. 4 Bob Forest's Classics This contribution came from one of our Canadian members, Bob Forest. Hi Paul, Here are a few pics of me with my Cutlass. I had a Webra.60 and Rom Air retracts. This was a wonderful plane. I had done very well with it. up to CX. was Quebec Patter Champion back in 75. I flew with Ed Izzo, Ivan Kristensen, Pappy De bolt, and many others, also Dick or Bob Bell, not sure which, or can't remember. Saw him in Toledo about 5 years ago in your booth. I am from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I am now 74, and still flying. Did some IMAC, but now flying more for fun. I now have a Saturn by Ivan, with a OS.61 and Rom Air retracts converted to electric by Down and Lock. Also have a 40 years old Kaos.60 with Rom Air retracts. Still enjoy the sport tremendously. Bob Forest In a follow up Bob writes: The story on the Cutlass. Many years ago in the late 60's I was in Toledo, and met with Don Coleman who was a dentist. I was at that time working for 3M in the dental division. So Don and I hit it off both being in the dental business. He had mentioned to me that he had a new design called the Cutlass and it was going to be in the MAN mag in about another 6 months. He had with him in his car an extra set of plans for the Cutlass and gave me the set. When I got back in Montreal, I built the plane with the Webra 60 and flew it at our first Montreal Radio Control Club pattern meet. We had invited Ivan Kristensen and Ed Izzo to our competition. Iven fell in love with my Cutlass and I had a set of plans copied for him. He also built it when he got back to his home in Kitchener Ontario. from that plane he started to modify it and then came the Saturn. I kept up with the Cutlass, built about 5 of them. I loved the plane. So that is the story of my Cutlass. Bob Page 4

5 A couple more photos from Bob. Paul, This picture I just found, it would of been taken in 1976 or That is my son who is holding my first RC plane, a De Bolt Champion with an OS.19, of me with my Cutlass. This was our flying site here in Montreal of the Montreal Radio Control Club, (MRCC). we had ft paved runways in the shape of an A. So no problem with wind. Also along side of each runway was a grass runway, which extended anther 200 feet. Most probably at the time the best flying site in Canada. Our member that owed the land sold it in 1987 and now we are at another location not far away, but all grass runway. You can also see from the picture some of the old Kraft radios and ProLine in the transmitter stand. As of this day we still are using this same stand. It is all metal. If you Google my name with architect after it, you will get all the info on my son Robert who is now an architect. He learn t how to fly RC on the Champion, built one plane and on the second flight did a loop and the wing folded. That was it for him re RC. I still have the plane to this day. 6 Classic Pattern in Italy, Vincenzo Sabbadin Dear Paul, Congrats for the web, I m an old F3A pilot from Venice Italy ( 55 years old) I used to fly around 70_80 in Europe with my personal models a mix from Super star of W. Matt and Curare of H. Pretnner with Eppler 468 airfoils and Kraft Radio.may father was did a WC of F3A In 62 Sweden with Taurus and 67 in Corsica as team manager He knew P. Kraft and he started a cooperation to import the radio in Europe Please could you help me, I would like to rebuild the Quick Fly Mk3 the original one not the new version from Graupner do you have a original design I lost it. 7 Dennis White's Super Kaos.60 This contribution came from fellow member, Dennis White. Hello Paul, Wow I cant believe there's a website for people that love old pattern planes. So I just joined your membership and thought I'd send you a couple photo's of my recently completed Great Planes Super Kaos 60! I found a kit on Ebay that had never been built and probably paid a little more than I should have. But how often do you find a new in the box kit like this that had been stored in a climate controlled building for over 20 years. 8 In The Shop Control Surface Painting Fixture A quick & simple painting fixture for control surfaces can be made from a piece of pine, a few 3/8 hardwood dowels and some 1/32 plywood. The photos are pretty much self explanatory as to how it goes together. The dowel holes in the pine can be drilled at random spacing to allow for some adjustment options for different size control surfaces. Page 8
