1 1 ON 1 GAME IMPROVEMENT THROUGH THE SITUATION DRILLS Assist. Professor Nenad Trunić, Ph. D. FIBA EUROPE Coaching Certificate Program lecturer, FIBA EUROPE Coaching clinic lecturer Deputy of Dean of Faculty of Physical Education & Management in Sport, Singidunum University, Belgrade, Serbia, College of Sports & Health, Belgrade Learning to ask the key questions is essential to success. Without the power of questions, there is no possibility of innovation or change. You must recognize that the change is a constant if you want to get better and to get the players you work with function better. These are the key questions you must continually ask yourself and the players you work with: WHY ARE YOU DOING WHAT ARE YOU DOING? HOW ARE YOU ACTUALLY GOING TO DO IT? SPECIFICALLY WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT? Answering those questions will enable you to design the most effective training programs as well as to be the best coach you can be BECAUSE CHANGE IS CONSTANT, COACHES MUST LEARN TO MANAGE CHANGE. I THINK, THAT WILL BE ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS. FLEXIBLE THINKING, OPENNESS TO NEW IDEAS SHOULD BE IN ALL YOUR MINDS. From both a philosophical and practical viewpoint you must recognize the importance of basic. Know the fundamental movements in offense and defense. Know what the basketball as a sport is. WE ARE COACHING PEOPLE, NOT BASKETBALL. Coaching is not SOMETHING YOU DO TO THE PLAYERS; IT IS SOMETHING YOU DO IN COOPERATION WITH THE PLAYERS. Never lose sight of the concept of the 24-hour player. The players you work with train for 2 to 4 hour a day, the other 20 to 22 hours have more influence of success then the training time. It s easy to fall into the trap of training, not coaching. Training is paying attention only to the actual workout: manipulation of sets, reps, heart rates, maximum lifts, exercise. Coaching is developing the whole person mentally, physically, socially. It is working closely with players to define their goals and teach them how to achieve their goals. COACHING, LIKE PARENTING, TEACHING, AND MANAGING, PROVIDES THE ROOTS TO GROW AND THE WINGS TO FLY. Coach is teacher. Teaching is communicating, and communication is the key to effective coaching. Communication has the dimension of both sending and receiving. Learn to listen as well as speak. Each player and team is unique and present unique challenge. No matter how good player or team is, they always can get better. QUALITY OF GREAT COACHES AND PLAYERS IS ALWAYS WORK TO IMPROVE SOME ASPECT OF GAME (ESPECIALLY IN OFF-SEASON PERIOD). EVEN IF YOU ARE THE BEST, YOU CAN GET BETTER. 1
2 COACHING FOR PROPER CONDITIONING Today s society is much more sedentary than previous generation were. Young coaches tend to focus on result rather than appreciate the developing process, and specialize game skills before and often to the execution of basketball fundamentals. Mistake is to try to evaluate before to teach. Coaches must be able to evaluate movement in order to improve it. Be creative. Build movement and drill progressions in which game skills and tactics are included. AT THE HART OF COACHING IS THE CREATIVE PROCESS. BUDDHIST SAYING: YOU DON T NEED TO SEE DIFFERENT THINGS, BUT RATHER TO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY. BASKETBALL SPECIFIC DEMANDS ANALYSIS 1. ANALYZE THE DEMANDS OF THE BASKETBALL Basketball is intermittent-sprint sport; require a series of maximum efforts with time for relatively full recovery. Basketball is transition-game sport; require a series of efforts of varied intensity with a short or complete recovery time. Basketball is a contact sport. 2. UNDERSTAND THE FIVE PLAYERS POSITIONS IN THE BASKETBALL Demands for a post player are different than for perimeter player 3. ANALYZE THE QUALITIES OF THE PLAYER Consider the training age, technical and tactical skill level, and physical capacities. 4. UNDERSTAND THE COMMON INJURIES IN BASKETBALL Ankle, knee, shoulder, and lower back zones are too risky in basketball. 2
