Toews' goal gives Blackhawks exhibition win over Wings Associated Press 12:15 a.m. EDT September 24, 2014 CHICAGO Jonathan Toews deflected in defenseman Duncan Keith's shot from the left point 3:01 into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 exhibition victory over the Red Wings on Tuesday night. Toews moved to the slot after passing the puck to Keith, and redirected Keith's slap shot between the legs of backup goaltender Petr Mrazek. Chicago's Patrick Kane made it 1-1 with 2:37 left in the second period. He took a pass from Brad Richards and beat goalie Jonas Gustavsson with a sharp backhand. Luke Glendening netted Detroit's goal when he deflected the point shot of defenseman Danny DeKeyser over goalie Corey Crawford 5:59 into the game. It was the first preseason game for the Blackhawks. 3 Slimmer Jimmy Howard can t wait for new season Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press Sports Writer 12:10 a.m. EDT September 24, 2014 TRAVERSE CITY Jimmy Howard began his off-season cherishing the birth of his second son, then got to work. He enters the season sleeker and lighter, even as his burden is to distance himself from a season he s the first to admit was an utter disappointment. He is penciled in to show off his new form in half of the team s eight exhibition games, which continue Thursday against visiting Boston. They broke camp in Traverse City on Tuesday after two practices; Howard spent Monday night in Pittsburgh making 25 saves over two periods. We got good goaltending, coach Mike Babcock said Tuesday. But we couldn t execute at all on the breakout coming out of zone. We spent way too much time in our own zone. We ll get better at those. Howard s performance reflected his off-season work. The big thing is, he s trained real hard this summer, Babcock said. When you earn the right to feel good about yourself through your training and your work ethic and your eating habits, all those things, I think you ve got a way better chance for success. Howard went through so poor a November that he was looking at being relieved for a stretch by Jonas Gustavsson just as a freak practice injury pushed Howard from the lineup anyway. He finished the season with a.910 save percentage and 2.66 goals-against average. He cites his inconsistency as what bugged him most last season. I set the bar pretty high for myself and want to push it higher each year, he said. This year I m very excited. I can t wait. This is the best I ve felt in two to three seasons heading into training camp. The off-season was spent training and working with longtime goaltending coach Jim Bedard on, Howard said, body-specific movement. Over the course of a season, your body can get pretty out of whack. It s just the way you re standing out there. I just tried to pull my shoulders back into place and my hips and everything like that so you re in the correct posture. If you see me walking around in February or March, my knees are inward, my shoulders are forward, so we basically tried to pull everything back so I m more efficient out on the ice. 5 Wings' Pavel Datsyuk injures shoulder; Helm breaks nose Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press Sports Writer 1:27 p.m. EDT September 23, 2014 TRAVERSE CITY -- The Detroit Red Wings didn't even last one exhibition game without suffering multiple injuries. Forward Pavel Datsyuk, who missed half of last season, was checked into a stanchion with four minutes to go in Monday's 2-1 exhibition victory at Pittsburgh. He had a goal and an assist in the game. He was in good enough humor this morning that when asked how he felt, he smiled and replied, "You need better ask how glass feels." Coach Mike Babcock was similarly upbeat. "Last night, they thought it was pretty serious," he said. "They didn't think he was feeling that bad today. I think they were surprised. He'll get checked out, and we'll know more, but I'm not as worried as I was last night." Eventual MRI results will shed more details on how much time Datsyuk will miss, but he said he is "looking to miss not much time. Just one week. We see. "It's early to say anything, but after first night, it's not too bad. I think it be worse. I'm happy for now." The Wings can only hope that Datsyuk's health matches his humor: They barely squeaked into the playoffs last season, after he and captain Henrik Zetterberg each missed large chunks of games, and renewed health is a big factor in the team's optimism as a new regular season approaches in two weeks. Last season's sick-bay numbers were ugly: Only two skaters appeared in all 82 games. Datsyuk and Zetterberg only appeared together 29 times. All in all, 24 forwards, 11 defensemen and three goaltenders appeared in winged-wheel sweaters in This year's training camp began ignominiously enough, with the news that top prospect Anthony Mantha, expected to push for a spot in Detroit in his first year since turning pro, will miss 6-8 weeks because of a fractured tibia. And the news remains discouraging on Daniel Alfredsson, as he is dealing with nagging back pain that casts tremendous doubt on whether he will play again. One day at a time, then. As it stood this afternoon, Datsyuk should be ready for the Oct. 9 opener. Darren Helm, who had been penned in to play next to Datsyuk, also was hurt Monday, suffering a broken nose and needing stitches on his left cheek after taking a stick to the face. Helm isn't expected to miss any games, as the regular season is still two weeks away. At best, Datsyuk joked, Helm is now "ready for Halloween." Ryan Sproul, a top prospect on defense, was checked from behind Monday, but both he and Helm finished the game. 5

"He got smacked pretty good," Babcock said of Helm. "And then Sproul, I don't think is a big deal, either. It's all part of training camp, each and every year. We've just got to find a way to stay healthy." Neither Helm nor Sproul was available for comment. Helm looked about as bad as Datsyuk described, with a face swollen and dark with marks. None of the three players was on the ice today, as the Wings wrapped up training camp with a final day of practices at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. Detroit Free Press LOADED:

Red Wings fall in OT to Blackhawks in exhibition Ted Kulfan, The Detroit News 1:58 a.m. EDT September 24, 2014 Jonathan Toews' tip-in at 3 minutes 1 second of overtime Tuesday, giving the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings at United Center. Luke Glendening scored the Red Wings' lone goal. Danny DeKeyser and Jakub Kindl assisted for the Red Wings. Patrick Kane scored the first Blackhawks goal. Goalie Jonas Gustavsson started and stopped 11 of 12 shots through two periods. Mrazek stopped six of the seven shots he faced. Detroit News LOADED:

Pavel Datsyuk's shoulder 'not too bad' after hit Ted Kulfan, The Detroit News 8:01 p.m. EDT September 23, 2014 Traverse City One game into the exhibition season and the Red Wings already were sporting bumps and bruises and broken noses. But it looked like they dodged anything serious. Pavel Datsyuk (sore shoulder), Darren Helm (broken nose) and Ryan Sproul (soreness) were kept off the ice Tuesday after Monday's game in Pittsburgh. Datsyuk, who was smashed into the glass by Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi, will have an MRI in Detroit, but expects to be out a week. "Too early to say anything, but not too bad," Datsyuk said. "I thought it could be worse (after a night's sleep)." Datsyuk missed half of last season with a knee injury. "That's hockey," Datsyuk said. "I don't worry." Red Wings coach Mike Babcock didn't seem overly concerned either. "I don't think there's a whole lot (there)," Babcock said after the Red Wings completed their last training camp workout. "(Monday) they may have thought it was pretty serious. (But) I don't think he was feeling that bad (Tuesday)." Helm was struck by a stick to the face early and needed stitches for a cut and sustained a broken nose. He was walking around Centre Ice Arena badly bruised around his nose and cheekbone. "He's ready for Halloween," Datsyuk said. Sproul was checked from behind and was sore Tuesday. "It's not a big deal, either," Babcock said. "It's all part of training camp every year. We just have to find a way to stay healthy." Kindl: 'I can play better' Defenseman Jakub Kindl, who signed a four-year contract worth $9.6 million after the season, had a rocky year capped by being scratched for Game 5 of the firstround playoff series against the Bruins. "I wouldn't say it was a disappointment but I know I can play better," Kindl said. "Maybe I got a little comfortable last year (because of the contract)." Babcock wants to see Kindl get to pucks and use his mobility. "If he's second to the puck, he spends too much time defending," Babcock said. "Get to the puck first. His whole game is about getting back, moving the puck." Ice chips 9

Babcock and his assistants Tony Granato and Jim Hiller have spent considerable time in camp working on special teams. The early returns were good against the Penguins as the Red Wings scored both goals on the power play. "It was real good," Babcock said. "I liked the way (the goals) happened, too."... Babcock believed there was an added boost of energy playing against another team rather than the intra-squad scrimmages during camp. "You can have all the training camp you want, but you don't play as hard (as in actual games)," he said. Detroit News LOADED:

Detroit Red Wings fall 2-1 in overtime to Chicago Blackhawks in preseason game Brendan Savage By Brendan Savage on September 23, 2014 at 11:15 PM, updated September 24, 2014 at 2:37 AM Goaltender Petr Mrazek has been perfect in the third period of two relief appearances for the Detroit Red Wings during the preseason. He just couldn't keep the streak alive in overtime Tuesday night in Chicago. Mrazek relieved Jonas Gustavsson after two periods against the Chicago Blackhawks and stopped all six shots he faced in the third to force overtime. But the Blackhawks won it on their first shot of overtime, when Duncan Keith scored on a slap shot 3:01 into the extra session to give Chicago a 2-1 victory at the United Center. Mrazek also took over for Jimmy Howard in the third period of Monday's game in Pittsburgh, stopping all 10 shots he faced in a 2-1 victory. Detroit's Luke Glendening scored the only goal of the first period, tipping a shot past Corey Crawford at 5:59. Danny DeKeyser and Jakub Kindl drew the assists. The Blackhawks tied it with 2:37 left in the second on a backhand by Patrick Kane. Gustavsson stopped 11 of 12 shots before giving way to Mrazek. The Red Wings (1-0- 1) outshot Chicago The Blackhawks visit Joe Louis Arena for a rematch at 7:30 Thursday night. NOTES: Detroit's Aaron Rome fought Cody Bass in the second period.... The Red Wings' Landon Ferraro led both teams with eight hits. Nobody else had more than four.... Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.... After outshooting Chicago during the first two periods, the Red Wings had two shots in the third and one in OT. Michigan Live LOADED:

Mike Babcock liked play of Red Wings' young defensemen, look of power play in preseason opener Ansar Khan By Ansar Khan on September 23, 2014 at 2:02 PM TRAVERSE CITY Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said he was pleased with the goaltending, the power play and the performance of a couple of team's defense prospects during Monday's 2-1 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center. But he didn't like their breakouts. "We couldn't execute at all on the breakout coming out of our zone," Babcock said. "We spent way too much time in our own zone; lack of talk, a lot of it is execution, but we'll get better at those things. "It was good for guys to get a game under their belt. You can have training camp all you want, if you don't play it's hard, so getting a game was great." The club's top four defense prospects all played: Xavier Ouellet (22:08), Ryan Sproul (21:45), Mattias Backman (19:08) and Alexey Marchenko (16:25). "I thought Ouellet had a good night. I thought Sproul did some good things," Babcock said. "Marchy looked a bit like he hadn't played in a long time (since late February, when he injured his ankle), but he hadn't played in a long time so we expect it. And Backman's just getting used to things over here (played in his first NHL preseason game). I wanted to play them all so I could see them all together. It was good. They were fine." Tomas Tatar and Pavel Datsyuk scored power-play goals. "(The power play) was real good. I like the way (the goals) happened, too," Babcock said. "(New assistant coach) Jim Hiller has done a nice job there. It's a little bit different than we've ever done, so it's nice. We'll see if we can keep it going." Jimmy Howard stopped 25-of-26 shots through two periods and Petr Mrazek turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the third. Michigan Live LOADED:

Festivities abound for groundbreaking of $650 million Detroit Red Wings arena project Thursday David Muller By David Muller on September 23, 2014 at 1:45 PM, updated September 23, 2014 at 7:06 PM DETROIT, MI - At the corner of Sibley and Woodward on Thursday the owners of the Detroit Red Wings are hosting a block party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., complete with familyfriendly events and Detroit Red Wings Experience games. The celebration comes the same day Ilitch Holdings is to officially break ground on a $650 million Detroit Red Wings arena and entertainment district development. The ceremonial dirt-throwing happens at 1:30 p.m. with Gov. Rick Snyder, Mayor Mike Duggan, City Council president pro-tem George Cushingberry, Jr. and Ilitch Holdings president and CEO Chris Ilitch all on hand to mark the occasion. Later, beginning Saturday, Sept. 27, a synthetic ice rink will be set up at the future site of the new arena. It will be free and open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends through Sunday, Oct. 5. Skates will be provided. Construction of the 20,000-seat arena and accompanying, 45-block entertainment district is scheduled to be complete in time for the 2017 NHL season. The 45-block entertainment district area, roughly bordered by Charlotte Street to the north, Grand River to the west, Grand Circus Park to the south and Woodward Avenue to east, is comparable in size to Georgetown in Washington, D.C., Back Bay in Boston and Greenwich Village in New York City. It will include mixed-use development. The recessed, bowl-shaped arena itself, built along Woodward Avenue between Sproat and Henry streets, will have its ancillary buildings surrounding it and detached, making them a part of the entertainment district. People will be able to access the area in and around the arena 365 days a year, except for during ticketed events. The $650 million development is to be funded with a mix of $365.5 million in private investment and an estimated public investment of $284.5 million. The $450 million sports and entertainment center and accompanying $200 million residential, retail and office district is getting public money primarily through tax increment financing. State legislation allows Detroit's DDA to collect up to $15 million a year for the project. The primary public funding mechanism for the project will be about $12.8 million per year in property taxes captured. The DDA will contribute another $2 million each year, and Olympia Development will pay another $11.5 million annually. Together, those three commitments will be used to retire 30-year bonds through the Michigan Strategic Fund. Michigan Live LOADED:

Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk to have MRI on shoulder, says 'after first night, it's not too bad' Ansar Khan By Ansar Khan on September 23, 2014 at 12:11 PM, updated September 23, 2014 at 1:03 PM TRAVERSE CITY Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk will have an MRI on his right shoulder today or Wednesday but said he is encouraged by how it feels one day after being checked into the glass in the preseason opener. He estimated that he'll be out one week but really isn't sure. "It's too early to say anything," Datsyuk said Tuesday, after staying off the ice at Centre I.C.E. "I'm not sure. After the first night, it's not too bad. I just think it could be worse. I'm happy right now." Datsyuk was injured on a hit from Rob Scuderi with about four minutes remaining in the Red Wings' 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center. Asked what happened, he said, "I got hit into the glasses." How does he feel? "You'd better ask how glasses feel," he said. Asked if he thinks he'll be out long, he said, "I (don't) want to miss much time, just I hope one week. We'll see." Coach Mike Babcock said it's not as bad as they first thought. "I think last night they thought it was pretty serious. I didn't think he was feeling hat bad today," Babcock said. "He'll get checked out and we'll know more, but I'm not as worried as I was last night." Datsyuk missed 37 games last season, seven due to a concussion and 30 because of knee inflammation. "Everything can happen, but don't worry about some things," he said. "It's hockey." Forward Darren Helm suffered a broken nose and needed some stitches under his eye after being high-sticked by Beau Bennett. Defenseman Ryan Sproul also didn't skate Tuesday due to soreness from a check by Robert Bortuzzo. Babcock said both are fine. "(Helm) got smacked pretty good, and then Sproul I don't think is a big deal either," Babcock said. "It's all part of training camp each and every year so we just got to find a way to stay healthy." Asked how Helm looks, Datsyuk said. "He's ready for Halloween." Michigan Live LOADED:

With no minor-league options, pressure is on Landon Ferraro in Red Wings' preseason games Brendan Savage By Brendan Savage on September 23, 2014 at 6:06 AM, updated September 23, 2014 at 6:09 AM TRAVERSE CITY Nobody has more at stake during the Detroit Red Wings preseason games than forward Landon Ferraro. The former second-round draft pick is out of minor-league options and needs to make enough of an impression during the preseason that the Red Wings will keep him on their roster to avoid exposing him to waivers. Ferraro (6-0, 179) will get his first chance to convince the Red Wings he's worthy of a roster spot tonight in Chicago, where Detroit will play its second preseason game after beating Pittsburgh 2-1 Monday night. "You're always trying to show what you can do and you've improved but this year is big," Ferraro said. "I worked hard in the summer trying to make sure I showed them I've made strides and that I want to push for a spot. I feel like I've had a good start but it's all about exhibitions, showing that I can play at this level. "I have to be good in my own end. I have to block shots. I have to use my speed and I have to hit. I have to get as many pucks to the net as possible and try to keep it in the offensive zone as much as possible. The biggest thing is on the PK. I have to make sure I'm in the right spots and using my speed to be kind of able to break plays up and get in lanes and block shots. "That's where I'm going to have to start. That's what I've been working on." Ferraro, 23, has done whatever possible to impress coach Mike Babcock during the first four days of training camp but he said there's nothing like playing an actual game to make a good impression. "It's hard for me to have an impact" in camp, Ferraro said. "I need to use my speed, which I can do here to get on a forecheck and hit and kind of do everything like that. But at the same time... I had a chance yesterday to get a real good lick in on (Jakub) Kindl but no one needs to be doing that right now. "Getting my first game I need to do what I can and show them I can be effective and I can chip in and be a part of this team." Ferraro has spent the past three seasons in Grand Rapids after the Red Wings picked him in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2009 NHL entry draft following a junior career with the WHL's Red Deer Rebels that saw him score 37 goals in He had his best pro season in , when Grand Rapids won the Calder Cup, scoring 24 goals among 47 points before getting five goals and 11 assists during 24 playoff games. 17

Ferraro regressed offensively last season getting 15 goals and 31 points in 70 games but if he's ever going to become a regular in the NHL it's going to be as a checker and penalty killer. He earned a call-up to Detroit last season, when the Red Wings were hit with a seasonlong rash of injuries, and appeared in four games in mid-march during Detroit's playoff push. Although he was scoreless, the Red Wings earned seven of a possible eight points during Ferraro's stint in the NHL. "It gives you a bit of confidence and you can see where you kind of line up," he said. "There were mistakes obviously made in the first couple but at the same time I feel like I handled myself well and you give yourself some reassurance that I can play here and I can play at that level." Ferraro said he's thought about playing in the NHL since age 6 after growing up around the game. His dad, Ray, played 18 NHL seasons for six teams and finished with 408 goals among 898 points. Landon said his four-game stint with the Red Wings was everything he imagined. "You finally get there and you want to be able to take it all in but at the same time you're there to do a job," he said. "You want to do as well as you can for yourself but at the same time when I was up there, it was right in the middle of them trying to make sure they'd get into the playoffs. "So I think it was kind of a special time to be able to come up and be thrown right into that situation where every game matters. We went so I mean it was a pretty cool time to be around." During his NHL debut last season in a 3-2 win over Toronto, Babcock liked Ferraro's penalty killing and speed he won the fastest skater competition at the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2009 and the Red Wings coach is looking forward to seeing what Ferraro can do in the preseason. "I think he had a real good summer, so he's stronger which is critical for him," Babcock said. "He's going to be at the next level, he's an energy guy who's got to be on the forecheck and be great defensively and be a penalty killer. "That's where his game's got to grow if he's going to play at the next level. Just getting stronger this summer is going to help. We're going to enjoy watching him in the exhibitions." If Ferraro doesn't earn a spot on Detroit's roster out of training camp and that seems unlikely he hopes to at least play well enough in the preseason so the Red Wings keep him in mind should he clear waivers and return to Grand Rapids for a fourth season. "I've had three full years in the minors," Ferraro said. "It's great hockey and everything is good but I want to be in the NHL and I feel like I can be so I have to make sure I give myself the best opportunity. You look at this team and it's so deep. 18

"It might not be right away but there's injuries, there's things that happen, everything. So if I'm not going to be here at the beginning I need to give myself a chance to be the first guy to be called up. You're working for a lot of things." Michigan Live LOADED:

Datsyuk to have MRI on injured shoulder FOX Sports Detroit SEP 23, :05p ET Rick Osentoski Pavel Datsyuk had one goal and one assist in the Wings' 2-1 victory over the Penguins. The injury bug has already bitten the Detroit Red Wings. Center Pavel Datsyuk injured his shoulder in Monday's exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Penguins after being hit by defenseman Rob Scuderi. Datsyuk will have an MRI Wednesday, but doesn't believe the injury is serious. "I [don't] want to miss much time, just I hope one week," Datsyuk said. "We'll see." Coach Mike Babcock admitted he isn't as worried about the injury now as he was Monday night. "I think last night they thought it was pretty serious," Babcock said. "I didn't think he was feeling that bad today. I think he was surprised. He'll get checked out and we'll know more." Datsyuk had one goal and one assist in the Wings' 2-1 victory over the Penguins. He appeared in just 45 games of an injury-ridden season, but isn't wasting much time worrying about his latest setback. "Everything can happen but don't worry about some things," Datsyuk said. "It's hockey." Darren Helm was also injured Monday night. Helm suffered a broken nose and needed a few stitches, which Datsyuk found humorous given the upcoming holiday. "He's ready for Halloween," Datsyuk said. foxsports.com LOADED:
