This is an informal affair for members of the club. The winner of the derby will be decided by who catches the longest fish, so measure and take pictures. Please join us for the festivities and frivolity. After the derby on Saturday, the club will gather at the pavilion in the park for dinner, awards ceremony and the annual installation of the River Princess. Reservations can be made for camping or motel at the state park, and lodging is available outside the park at several campgrounds and motels. Gary Family Fun Day Report MTFA Officers President: V President: Secretary: Treasurer: Members at Large: Merril Miller Roger Theroux David Cook Marvin Allison Bill Beckman (913) Gary Davisson (816) Carol Cook (816) Kent Inman (816) The annual family fun day was a wonderful event with great food and fellowship. There were approximately 34 in attendance. We want to thank all the members that provided a side dish or dessert that made our meal a feast to behold. After lunch, members and guest spent time talking and telling fish stories as well as about places they have been or are going fishing. The Family Fun Day has been a long standing tradition in the MTFA. Again, we want to thank all the members who made this club activity a great success. MTFA and Camp MITIOG MTFA was contacted by Edie Roderick with Camp MITIOG. Camp MITIOG is a week-long camp held each summer for almost 40 years for kids living with Spinal Bifida. For most of these children, camp is the only opportunity they have in an environment in which they are accepted as equals. We were asked to demonstrate and teach a fly fishing class. On July 24, 2014 seven members of MTFA and Nathan Diesel from Orvis made the trip to Lake Doniphan near Excelsior Springs. Ten to eleven kids signed up for the Continued on Page 3
3 Page 3 MTFA and Camp MITIOG Continued: class. Nathan gave the kids a great presentation. Then we teamed up with them as they practiced fly casting, followed by a period of fishing before lunch. They all had fun and even caught fish. Yes, they enjoyed the class enough that we are invited back next year. This is a great opportunity for our club to share our passion for fly fishing and to let other individuals and groups know what we are about. Marvin Allison Project Healing Waters - Rockbridge Report For me the second week of July could not get here soon enough. Bob Barnett, PHWFFKC Program Lead, had booked the PHWFFKC group into Rockbridge Trout & Game Ranch. As it turned out Rockbridge had just celebrated their 60th anniversary on July 4 with fireworks, kid s games, horseback riding and plenty of rainbow trout were still left in the stream. Rockbridge is located south of Ava, Missouri. The original grist mill and dam were built in A small town soon grew up around the mill; the old general store now serves as the present day office, restaurant and post office. The Amyx family purchased the property in 1954 and turned it into the present day trout and game ranch. Kevin Gabert and I left a day early just to make sure all the arrangements were in order. They were which freed up a little time to make sure the rainbows would cooperate for everyone the following day. Field testing can be tough duty but someone has to do it. I am not sure what the participant s and volunteer s expectations were for Rockbridge. Other than Kevin I don t think anyone had ever been to the place. The group fished in the catch and release section of the stream and most of them realized very quickly that it was not a typical Missouri trout park experience. Rockbridge rainbows are stocked at around 2 pounds and a 4-5 pound fish can take your fly on any cast. They are not easy but readily take a well presented fly, fight hard and love to jump. Continued on Page 4
4 Page 4 Project Healing Waters - Rockbridge Report Cont d The outing was over too soon. The meals were great the hospitality even better and I am told many of the world s problems were solved during the discussions late into the evening. On our last day PHWFFKC participants presented Sandra Amyx a framed Campaign Ribbon Fly Plate. She was visibly moved and promised everyone that it would be displayed in a prominent place. From the participants feedback it appears everyone enjoyed the Rockbridge outing. It looks like a repeat trip is in the works for next year. Try to make it if you can. By Ron Carruthers President s Message: First let me thank those who volunteered to share their fly fishing knowledge with the kids at Camp MITIOG. We had a great turn out for the 4 th Annual MTFA KC Chapter Derby held at Bennett Springs on August 9, Jim Roger s supplied great prizes for the adult and kids division. With fall season the Brown Trout are stating to run. That said we have some great club outing s coming up. Come join us the week end of September 27, 2014 for the annual KC Derby at Roaring River State Park. The club outing at Taneycomo will be held October 10-12, Fly Tying Classes Starts September 8, 2014 and runs for 7 weeks, September 8th thru October 20th. Contact Merrill or merrilgofish@aol.com Don t forget to add the MTFA Club Annual Chili Supper & Raffle October 28, 2014 to your agenda. 5 Page 5 K&K September Free Clinics Saturday event schedule: September 6th - Fly Lines cast and compare all types. September 13th - The great 6wt fly rod shootout. September 20th - Tried and True patterns with Betty Hiner September 27th - Mend, Curve and slack line cast. (Call or for reservation) Gear Review: The Ketchum Release Tool The Ketchum Release tool is designed to allow an angler to release a fish without touching it. The working end of the tool is a slotted tube. The angler catches his leader in the slotted tube and slides the tool down the leader and tippet to the fly. The fly is popped out the fish s mouth with a flick of the wrist (the flick takes a little practice). There are two positive benefits of using this tool. There is no handling of the fish; the fish does not even leave the water, damage to the fly is greatly reduced and there is no grabbing and mangling of the fly by forceps. The Ketchum Release tool works best when wading in water that is at least knee deep. It is a long way to bend over to release a fish when the water is only ankle deep. The Ketchum Release is made of some sort of high tech plastic. It is rust proof and pretty much unbreakable. But it does not float. It is best secured to the angler s person with a zinger or a lanyard. The tool comes in several sizes. The smallest is all you need for the waters here in Missouri and Northern Arkansas. It is available at local fly shops or on line. It costs approximately $ Check it out. Gary Orvis in Leawood Hello Anglers, Orvis Leawood has several exciting things going on in September and October that I want to tell you about! First is, that if you took our FF101/201/301 classes this year, your coupons are set to expire on August 31. That is only a few short days to get that Helios 2, Access, Superfine, or Clearwater package at 20% off or to use your $25 off $50 coupon! The expiration dates are firm so don t miss out on your chance! If you can t make it into the store, give me a call and I ll mail it to you for no additional charge. Also, we are having a sale on our Access and Superfine Graphite rods. $100 off regular prices which means Continued on Page 6
6 Page 6 Orvis in Leawood Cont d that you can get an Access starting at $325 or a Superfine Touch starting at $395! This sale is for everybody, not just our class participants. Again, if you can t make it into the store, call me. I will ship for free! If you are looking at trying out one of the Superfine Glass rods, at this moment I have a 3 wt and a 4 wt in the store for $395. These are sweet slow action rods that are a blast on bluegill, bass and trout. Our friends at Orvis Plano (TX) have been using a 5 wt Glass rod to catch carp down on Ray Roberts Lake and just having a ball now if they would only send me one. I still have a couple of spots available for our 301 class to fish Lake Taneycomo with River Run Outfitters the last weekend of September. This is a full day, guided drift boat trip with one of the highest rated Orvis Endorsed Outfitters for only $150 per person. The big browns will have started to make their way up and fishing is usually HOT! I have one spot available for Saturday September 27 and two spots free for Sunday September 28. These are first come first serve and a deposit is required. Feel free to call or if you need any more information about this trip. It might be possible to reserve another boat for each day if you are a party of 2. I would have to check availability before confirming this with you. Fall Orvis days are just around the corner as well and we have some exciting seminars for you. It will be taking place October 9 from 5-8 pm. 5-8 MOKAN Trout Unlimited will be here to get you signed up to be a TU member and to discuss what the new MOKAN chapter will be doing to benefit the Greater KC area. 6-7 Fishing Manager Nathan Diesel will be giving a demonstration tying flies for big browns. He will also be talking about how and when he fishes them 7-8 Orvis Leawood Fishing Lead Brad Kellerman will be talking about the Urban Trout Stocking program. When, how and where to catch KC s winter trout. We will be having free PIZZA for anyone who attends a seminar (while it lasts) and will be having a drawing for a Streamer box full of flies! Over a $100 value (will be drawn on Saturday night, only for those who attend a seminar Thursday or Saturday) so put it on your calendar. On Saturday, October 11, MOKANTU will be at the store again, and from 2-3 PM, Brad will be holding a seminar on Urban Carping! Learn what to use and where just minutes from the store. This will be a great seminar with lots of good information from beginner to advanced carpers. Nathan Diesel Fisheries Manager Orvis Store in Leewood, Ks. Club Member News: We have some club members that are going through some difficult times: Kent Inman is battling cancer, he goes back to the doctors the first week in September for another scan and consultation with the doctors. Joe Fusco is having some stomach issues and has had a upper and lower GI. Mary Stoner is having problems with equilibrium. Barry Wilkinson is having some eye problems. Brenda Scott is taking medication for a brain tumor. The grandson of Bill & Joan Otis is having problems with his heart. This is a transplanted heart so he may be going through another heart transplant. Please keep these members in your prayers! Marvin Allison
