A year ago the Huskies fi nished third at the EWL championships with 88.5 points. Matt Moley was named the tournament s Outstanding Wrestler, while George Hickman and Ian Moser earned automatic bids to the NCAA championships. (Rick Schmelyun later earned an at-large berth to the NCAA championships.) STUTZMAN ON THE HUSKIES I feel the season went well. We finished10-8 with wins over Michigan and Buffalo. Even though we were inconsisitent at times I felt we were right there in ever match and had chances to win. With our schedule that is all you can ask for. As far as peaking, we are progressing and the guys are excited and feeling good about there preparation. We are coming to the end of two great careers in Matt (Moley) and Rick (Schmelyun). They have combined to win almost 250 matches in there career. These guys were part of my fi rst recruiting class and they helped bring Bloomsburg wrestling back. What I am going to miss is there consistency. They always prepared and won at a high level. Hopefully there best is wrestling is ahead of them. 2 LAST MATCH The Bloomsburg University wrestling team ended its regular season with a win over Lock Haven on Feb. 12. The Huskies dropped two of the fi rst three matches of the evening to fall behind 9-3 with Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) picking up Bloomsburg s fi rst win by an 8-7 score. Bloomsburg began its comeback when Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.L. Haney) posted a 6-3 win at 149 pounds followed by a 22-8 win for ninth-ranked Matt Moley (Phoenixville/ Spring-Ford) at 157 pounds putting the Huskies on top At 165 pounds 11th-ranked Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) earned a win by fall in just 1:18. Schemelyun opened the match with a takedown and quickly worked the move into a pin. Bloomsburg s Nate Graham (Selkirk, NY/Ravena) won 5-3 at 174 pounds to make it 19-9 with three bouts remaining. Lock Haven won by decision at 184 before the Huskies Brian Shaw (Holidaysburg/Holidaysburg) won 5-2 at 197 pounds for a lead. Moley is now fi fth place all-time with 119 wins and needs just three more to surpass Ed Hockenberry ( ) for fourth all-time. Schmelyun is eighth all-time in wins with 114 and needs three more to move past former All- American Ricky Bonomo. The Huskies all-time leaders in career wins are Don Reese and Dave Morghan with 127 victories each. MOLEY HAVING ANOTHER GREAT YEAR Two-time All-American Matt Moley has put together another great year for the Huskies as the team prepares for the EWL championships. Moley, ranked ninth by Intermat, has won eight straight matches on the year and is 22-3 on the year. In November Moley was selected to take part in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fullerton, CA where he lost to then top-ranked Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska. After winning the 157 pound weight class at the PSAC championships in impressive fashion Matt Moley was named the EWL Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 7. Moley pinned his way through the 67th annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. In his three bouts Moley racked up three fi rst-period pins and was named the tournament s Outstanding Wrestler. Moley earned EWL Wrestler of the Week honors twice during the season. SCHMELYUN ROLLING AT END OF THE SEASON Rick Schmelyun goes into the EWL championships on a roll having won seven straight matches, with three by fall and three by technical fall. Schemelyun has been dominant in his last four matches winning three by shutout and the fourth by fall (with his opponent not scoring in the match). Overall, Schemelyun has not allowed an opponent to score his Jan. 24 when he won 11-7 against Donald Jones of West Virginia. Earlier this season Schmelyun went 4-1 against some of the nation s top competition at the Southern Scuffl e in Greensboro, N.C. His only blemish came in the fi nals when he lost a 6-1 decision to Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota, ranked No. 4 in the 165 lb weight class by Intermat. Perhaps his most impressive win, Schmelyun picked up a 15-2 major decision over Edinboro s Jarrod King, the defending NCAA Champion, who had beaten Schmelyun, 4-0, at the PSAC Championships earlier this season. Schmeylun downed the top-seeded King in the semifi nals, handing him his fi rst loss of the season. The Husky opened the tournament with a pair of wins by technical fall. Schmelyun s runner-up effort moved him to 19-5 on the season. NATIONAL STATS Rick Schmelyun leads all D-I wrestlers at 165 pounds with six technical falls. He is also tied for fourth nationally with eight pins and is 12th in wins with 26. At 174 pounds Nate Graham is ranked 16th in wins with 25, while at 157 pounds, Matt Moley is tied for third in technical falls with four. Moley is also tied for fourth in major decisons with eight. As a team, Bloomsburg is 20th in D-I with 19 technical falls this season, is 25th in pins with 63 and is tied for 27th in wins with 10.
