On November 19 the Hudson Valley Ski Club invite all to participate in our bake off. This year the theme will be Thanksgiving desserts. The idea is to enter one of your family s favorite Thanksgiving holiday dessert, or just one of your own. We will have two winners. The first will be the judges pick; the second will be by popular vote. Coffee and tea will be provided. Please contact Craig Goldstein at dockman1@optonline.net to let him know you will participate. Please join us for a Night at the Theater on November 22 at 8:00 p.m. November 5 "Rocker" time Getting the best performance from your skis can be a matter of personal skills and abilities, or maybe what the ski is designed to do. Also, what do all of those dimension numbers mean to you? November Program To find out why there are so many ski designs and what you need to know when selecting new skis, you will want to attend our regular meeting on November 5, 7:30 pm. A representative from Potter Bros Ski shop will be bringing several pairs of skis and boots, and explaining their intended design functionality. This information, along with demoing skis, will give you a significant advantage when choosing your next pair of skis or boots, and hopefully improve your skiing. Come early to enjoy a delicious dinner and drink at Coppola's. at the County Players production of The Marvelous Wonderettes Herb Eschbach Craig Goldstein Presently the tickets are $22 for adults and $19 for seniors, but I will try to get a better group rate if there is sufficient response. We can meet at Wagon Wheel Pizza before which is located one block from the theater. Parking is available nearby. The sign up sheet will be available at the meetings and payment will be expected at that time. Randy Downey Chris Herman Welcome to the following new members: Margaret Moebius John Viola From the President by Frank Van Zanten, President The mention of November brings to mind the definitive end of summer, the eating of the bird, and the urgency to ready our skiing equipment. And there's thanksgiving... both the holiday and our personal response to what has been good in our lives. As members of the Hudson Valley Ski Club this presents us an opportunity to express appreciation to those who have given a special measure of time, thought and energy to make HVSC the organization that it is. In no special order, and definitely with the risk of inexcusable omissions, I'm thinking of... - Susan Kokosa, our Race Training specialist who, without fail, finds us our weekly libation location. - Gwen Cardarelli and Susan Stark and Ellen Kelly who, with imagination and enthusiasm, present us with wide-ranging opportunities for off-the-snow recreation. - Helen Dickerson, who brought the Mohonk House holiday dinner to our attention. - Jim Gahn, who steadfastly watches over the club's monies, monthly represents us at the New Jersey Ski and Snowboard Council (NJSSC), and annually (with help) organizes the Vermont Adventure. - Susan Eschbach, who cheerfully greets our guests and new members at all our meetings. - Pete Gray, who keeps track of all our members (155 as of October 15) and lists them in printed and on-line directories. - Carole Daniels, who prepares the budget and coordinates our keeping a section of rail trail free from trash. - Mark Searle, who solicits lift tickets for our weekly Lift Ticket Lotto and, with Herb Eschbach is available for on-slope ski instruction - Mike Harelick, who maintains the club's website and,with wife Angie, brings us a newsletter twelve times a year... probably a bigger job than most of us want to imagine. - Bill and Nancy Egan, who with the entire trip planning committee, annually present us with a richly varied menu of exciting ski trips. - John Macek, Chair of the Constitution Committee, and Herb Eschbach, who know the bylaws and the master-plan and remind us of what is required and legal. - Rich Partridge, who as secretary, records the happenings and decisions at board and member meetings. Long time HVSC member Florence Flo (Brondel) Sheridan, passed away this past January. Flo chose to keep her illness and resulting passing private (even her obituary gave only date of birth, passing and that she was a resident of Stanfordville,) but we wish to insure that everyone who knew and cared for Flo is aware, at least belatedly, of her passing. Flo s husband, Ray Sheridan, who ran the HVSC Race training program (real ski racing, not the Friday night gatherings), used to say, We re looking for a few good women [for the racing program.] We can only say he found one of the best. Our condolences to her family. - Tom Pompei, who annually coordinates the mid-winter Wednesday racing program at Catamount and the club's participation in the New Jersey Council's race day in March at Hunter. - Bill Dunstan, who ably presided over the installation dinner, transitioning the club into a new year. - Craig Goldstein, who as Chair of the Marketing and Publicity Committee, has recently involved the Club with Meet-Up. - Frank Van Zanten, Jeff Elwyn, Rich Partridge, Jim Gahn, Pat Cummins (oficers), and Herb Eschbach, Carole Daniels, Craig Goldstein, Keith Faucher Ellen Kelly (Board Members), who together make up the Board Of Directors. - All who attend meetings, and all who pay dues. 3 HVSC Trips Page 3 Lift Ticket Lotto Lift Ticket Lotto will resume at the second October meeting, that s October 15, with tickets from some regional ski areas. This program benefits both members and the ski areas as the areas donate tickets to the club that we in turn use in the raffle that generates some needed capital for the club. Lift tickets are arriving from ski areas now so at press time we can t specially say which area will be represented but rest assured that there will be a Lift Ticket Lotto at the October 15 meeting. The cost of raffle tickets is $1 for one ticket, $5 for 6 tickets and $10 for 15 tickets. Remember, you ve got to be in it to win it. whom he had led on many hikes. During a potluck party following the hike John received many heartwarming tributes for his friendship and for having been the "go-to" person with questions about the region and its flora and fauna. John has been retired from being an educator in the New York's correctional system and has been on many HVSC trips. He is now leaving the area for Colorado to be near his family. He plans to maintain his HVSC membership and is signed up for this season's trips to Snowbird/Alta and to Banff/LakeLouise/Sunshine. Ulana Salewycs' Art Exhibition About Our Members by Frank Van Zanten, President Farewell to John Kenney (kind of) Thirty-some skiers and hikers joined John Kenney at the Mohonk Preserve on October 18 for an almost 5 hour hike to Millbrook Mountain, a 7-miles trip. Several participants were members of HVSC but most were Mohonk hiking friends Ulana will exhibit paintings, photographs and mandalas at the Cunneen Hacket Arts Center, 9 Vassar Street, Poughkeepsie, from October 25 through November. Opening reception on Saturday October 25, 2-5PM. For more information contact Ulana at greenulana@gmail.com. Warren Miller Film Screening Warren Miller's "No Turning Back" is scheduled for 8 PM on Thursday November 6 at the Tarrytown Music Hall, 13 Main Street, Tarrytown. Individual tickets $19. As the ski season draws closer, there are two things that will be very important to our club. First we would like all of our members to circulate the club brochures. They should be placed in as many outlets as possible. A supply will be available at our club meetings. In addition to the brochures, the club card is another way of spreading the word. Second, and this is new, the Hudson Valley Ski Club has joined the social media group Meetup. The idea behind this venture is to reach as many potential new members as possible. Each club meeting is announced with a short description of the meeting agenda. We would all of our present members to join by going to meetup.com. So far we have reached 50 potential new members.
