1 JANUARY 2015 It s not every day that Coconut Grove Sailing Club hosts a World Championship. In fact, the Club has never done that before in anything like modern times, at the least. But, after months of planning, it all magically came together in the final few days, aided in very large measure by outstanding racing conditions on the ocean east of Key Biscayne. Shore-side Venue. Because of this racing location, the shore-base for CGSC s five Melges 32 regattas this season is always Miami Beach Marina on South Alton Road AKA the Miami Beach Station of CGSC! Working with event planner Megan Goldberg and Melges 32 Class Administrator Joy Dunigan, a huge tent was erected in the parking lot adjacent to the Marina with lounge furniture, podium, DJ equipment, open bars, TV TERRIFIC CGSC MELGES 32 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! screens and all the comforts of home. The tent was a great success, attracting crowds of racing sailors each afternoon and evening, and especially for the Saturday night party hosted by Goombay Smash, one of the competing teams an infamous group, to be sure! CGSC Benefit Auction. The first ever Australian entry in a Melges 32 World Championship was Barry Cuneo s Envy Scooters young Corinthian team from Royal Queensland YC in Manly, Queensland, Australia near Brisbane. They donated two kid s scooters to be auctioned off one to benefit the Junior Sailing program at their RQYC and one for the CGSC Junior Sailing program. The CGSC auction netted $1,500 for CGSC s Junior program. Thanks to Barry and to winning bidder and first time repeat continued on 4

3 VICE COMMODORE S REPORT Happy New Year! By the time you get this newsletter the only-in-the-grove King Mango Strut will have just happened and I hope you spent Sunday having brunch at the Club (remember brunch is available the last Sunday of each month) and then watching the Strut. I also hope you were able to join us on New Year s Eve for the club s ever-popular celebration. As I write this, I am envisioning some great 1970 s outfits and am looking forward to seeing everyone in their 1970 s finest disco threads. Check the club s Facebook page for pictures. If you ve been to the Club in the last month, I am sure you have noticed some changes. I want to again thank all of the volunteers that helped out on Work Weekend. We had over 100 people on Saturday and another large group on Sunday! It s so nice to see everyone pitching in to help in the annual sprucing up of the Club. There are way too many people to thank individually but I must acknowledge PC Alyn Pruett for all his help together with the rest of the Property Committee (PC Bill Beavers, Nicole Bailey, Duffy Samuel and Rob Carlson). The work and repairs continue with the help of Orlando Chirino, the Club s newest staff addition, who is working hard to help keep all aspects of the Club maintained. As you ll read in Rear Commodore Sutcliffe s article, the Arts Festival is around the corner the weekend of February The Miami International Boat Show is also that weekend and we will again have a booth at Strictly Sail at the Bayside marina. We need volunteers to help at the booth during the show. Various time slots are available and it s another great way to meet fellow sailors and to tell everyone what a great Club we have it s where sailors belong. Please see Lauren, Adriana or me if you re able to volunteer. See you at the Club or on the water. Jeffrey Flanagan,Vice Commodore ViceCommodore@cgsc.org Golden Greek, Catalina 27 REAR COMMODORE S REPORT Hello Sailors! Last month we witnessed a huge effort at workday, with lots of people working hard to improve the clubhouse, the gardens, and the club boats. This month we saw another huge volunteer effort, as our Race Committee provided services for the Melges 32 World Championship. To Ron Rostorfer and Susan Walcutt, and the 61 other Race Committee volunteers, thank you for showing what a great sailing club CGSC really is. Sandrine Quenee, the shoreside leader, computed that club members gave over 1250 hours of service to the regatta. (And if you ask her nicely I think she ll showyou a photo of me wearing shoes at the awards ceremony :-). The next big event on the Youth Program calendar is the Flip-Flop Fete (14th March), chaired this year by Odile Da Silva. Here is another opportunity to support the Youth Program, and have some serious fun. The Fete is held out on the lawn, with daiquiris served by club celebrities, food and drinks, a silent auction, and a band for dancing. If you d like to be involved in the organization just let us know. If you have anything you can donate for the auction, we d love to hear from you... anything, from your house to a batch of freshly baked cookies. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival (12-16th February) is one of our annual recruitment drives. Most club members enjoy the festival, and a few hours promoting the club in the street is always fun. The Annual Rendezvous (18-19th April) will be at Boca Chita Key again. This year the theme will be The Sixties Surfing Scene (thanks to Diane Ferrari for that idea)! Last weekend I took a crew out on Moon Glow, while the cold northerlies were blowing. Cold? They laughed at me! Try sailing in Michigan at this time of the year. It s amazing that we have wonderful sailing weather all year around. No sitting on the balcony whining about the temperature - get on a boat and go out on the bay. That s where CGSC sailors belong! See you out there! Geoff Sutcliffe RearCommodore@cgsc.org Moon Glow - Bristol 30 3
4 (continued from 1) World Champion Jason Carroll of New York, skipper of Argo. The auction occurred during a break of the reggae band during the Saturday night party. The Racing. In a word, spectacular! After the first two CGSC Melges 32 events this fall were plagued by light air, an enduring NE flow settled in for the Worlds. The Pre-Worlds on Monday, December 1 and the first two days of the Worlds on Wednesday and Thursday, December 3-4 were sailed in NE knots winds and big seas. Friday was around 15 knots, Saturday and for the finale on Sunday, NW Pretty much the complete spectrum of conditions, as befitting a proper World Championship! There was talk afterwards that this was the best Melges 32 World Championship ever! How about that, CGSC?? There were 17 entries representing an incredible eight different countries, from Japan to Sweden and Italy. With ten races scheduled over five days, the format was for two long races per day, given that looking ahead the planned number of races on a given day could be altered. The three-race Pre-Worlds on Monday were won by Ryan DeVos s Volpe with two-time America s Cup winning skipper Jimmy Spithill aboard. Hello, Volpe, it s bad luck to win the tuneup! After two days of breeze-on racing and four races, Robertissima, sailed by Pierre Casiraghi (the Prince of Monaco) had two bullets, a redress given and a 9th and lead the field. An early strong performance by Mamma Aiuto, sailed by Japan s Naofumi Kamei was negated by a DSQ in Race 4. The next day, Mamma Aiuto had a 2nd and a last. You ve got to like humble pie if you race one of these Melges 32 s! Three races were scheduled for Saturday due to the light breeze forecast for the final day on Sunday. That would leave one race remaining for Sunday. These races were sailed in moderate air of 10 knots or so. It was becoming a two boat regatta between defending World Champion Jason Carroll s Argo and the Italian Torpyone team. They entered the day three points behind Argo and sailed an impressive record for the day. Still, they lost a point to Argo which posted a for the day. Entering the final race and day on Sunday, the 4
5 Italians trailed Argo by four points and would have to put four boats between them to win due to Argo s three first place finishes to date. That didn t happen. Argo rounded the top mark after Leg 1 in second with the Italians a few boats back. Argo went on to win with Torpyone climbing to 4th. Argo thus became the first successful defender of the Melges 32 World Championship in the history of the Class with a seven-point victory. Mamma Aiuto finished 3rd 14 points back of 2nd. A 4th place average would have been easily good enough to win in this very competitive, rock-star studded event. CGSC Shore-side and Race Committee Volunteers. Special thanks to CGSC Shore-side Regatta Chair Sandrine Quenee who organized many shore-side volunteers for Registration, Sail Measurement, Jury Desk and other activities. Sandrine was on site morning, noon and night while still juggling career obligations. Thank you, Sandrine!! Out on the race course for the CGSC Race Committee were: Chartered Signal Boat Skipper Brent Feder, M32 Class PRO Anderson Reggio of Newport, RI, and Signal Boat Crew Dottie Rostorfer, Saralee Lamb, Connie Bradley, Helen Phillips, Nancy Rogachenko, Denise Schneider and Jo Ann Mathieu. Weather Mark 1 was RC Chair Susan Walcutt s Contender 27 with Race Officer Jeff Butzer, James Liebl, Trish Walker, Suzanne Roberts and Esther DiLeo. Weather Mark 2 was skippered by Debbie Ryder with Race Officer Ron Rostorfer (PC) and crews Bonnie Padgett and Andi Hoffman. The Gate Boat was David Kurtz s (PC) Robalo with Race Officer Blake Middleton from Minneapolis, Rick Klein, Barbara Safiullin, Ryan Alexander and Rear Commodore Geoff Sutcliffe. The Pin Boat was skippered by Julie Hanrahan and Don Poole with Race Officer Jeff Zarwell from San Francisco and crews Cynthia Ross and Buddy Culbertson. Trophies. The trophy presentation was almost as wild as the Saturday night party! Champagne was prayed just about everywhere as the Teams celebrated the podium finishes of the top three boats and their stellar crews. 6 It was a death from behind year for the 2014 Miami-Nassau Cup Race, with slower boats riding new breeze right up to the leaders on the final leg, to Nassau Harbor. The entire fleet finished within 2.5 hours of each other on Friday evening. First across was CGSC Member Frank Atkinson s new J-125 Raisin Cane, in the IRC Class. Taking line honors for the PHRF Class was Eamonn DeLisser and Jim Bill s new Farr 395 Senara, who were pushing Raisin Cane for the fleet lead early on Friday morning. Alas, a day of light downhill work brought the leaders slowly to Nassau, while their big leads evaporated, thanks to the back of the fleet bringing the new breeze right up to the the leaders. CGSC Member, Nassau Cup Race Better in the Bahamas! NOTICE Upcoming CGSC Regattas Wilfredo Paredes Beneteau 43 Sunquest took the win in the PHRF Class by more than 45 minutes over the defending Nassau Cup Champion, Mirage. Congratulations also to CGSC Member Alex Sastre and his team on board Pushing Tin, his brand new 38 Salona. In the IRC Class, Russell Dunn s Beneteau 36.7 Rim Shot hit nothing but net, beating Robin Team s J 122 Teamwork by more than an hour to win the Nassau Cup. Awards were presented at the Nassau Yacht Club following a fun day of J-22 Match Racing. Next up for the SORC season is the 2015 Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race on January 14 and the Pineapple Cup, Ft. Lauderdale to Montego Bay Jamaica Race on February 6, both hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club and Storm Trysail Club. 7 The holidays are always an interesting and busy time for your Adult instructional program here at CGSC. There are gift certificates, out-of-town holiday vacationers (especially from the North) yearning to get on the warm clear waters of Biscayne Bay, even if only for a couple of hours with an instructor, students wanting to use Gift Certificates from last year before they expire, continuing classes at a time which is difficult to anticipate and prepare for regarding needed boat and instructors, and then there is Santa. These are all good issues for our active and successful instructional efforts. We look forward to 2015 with even more success and participation. Our fleets are staying busy and in good condition, including some new Sunfish hulls, and continuing maintenance and improvements to the Ensigns and Beneteaus. Sunfish classes, despite the cooler water continue to thrive, and special thanks to Glenn Newland for his volunteer help with our December group class. The short void in our Cruising class schedule has been filled with the great efforts of Capt. Bruce Penrod who held our largest BASIC CRUISING class just recently (see picture), and has scheduled both Basic Cruising and Basic Bareboat classes into Our next BASIC CRUISING Class is January and next BASIC BAREBOAT Class is January Congratulations to six members, Javier Sanchez, Jose Olano, Philippe Dusser, Walter O Leary, and Jan and John Sauvigne for earning their US Sailing BASIC CRUISING Certification in November with ADULT SAILING REPORT Capt. Bruce, now providing them the privileges of the Member-User program for our Beneteau cruising boats. We are pleased to also be adding Capt. John Embler, member, to our instructional staff. John has extensive sailing experience, including racing and instructional experience, and maintains his personal classic cruising boat on our moorings. John will be assisting us first with BASIC KEELBOAT classes and coaching. For those existing and new members interested in the cruising program and the personal member-use of the Beneteaus, be reminded that the BASIC KEELBOAT Certification is the prerequisite for the BASIC CRUISING Class. BASIC KEELBOAT Certification can be attained through challenging the course, for experienced sailors, or by passing the BASIC KEELBOAT Certification test after completing the BASIC KEELBOAT Course. For January, two (2) BASIC KEELBOAT Weekend Group Courses are scheduled for the weekends of January and Contact Richard (see below) to register for these courses or to schedule a US Sailing BASIC KEELBOAT Challenge. Thanks to all the new students and members for their support and enthusiasm as we strive to fulfill the Club s Mission, and.. Happy New Year and Safe Sailing to ALL!
