The Friars opened the season Oct with a non-conference split at Ohio State and most recently tied the U.S. Under-18 Team in exhibition action on Oct. 16. Providence is led by junior goalie Jon Gillies, an All-American two years ago who boasts a program-record eight career shutouts. Senior freshman Ross Mauermann is the team s top returning scorers after collecting 19 goals and 36 points last season. PC Coaching Staff Head coach Nate Leaman (SUNY Cortland 97) is in his fourth season at Providence and is (.534). Now in his 12th year as a collegiate head coach, including an eight-year stint at Union, Leaman owns a career record of (.523). Leaman s staff includes assistant coaches Steve Miller (St. Mary s 88) and Kris Mayotte (Union 06), as well as goaltending coach Jim McNiff (Merrimack 98). Series History This weekend s series marks the first meeting between UND and Providence since Jan. 20, 1989, when UND defeated the host Friars 3-2. UND has won eight of the 13 all-time matchups between the two programs. Poll Position UND was ranked No. 3 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national polls on Monday, while Providence was ranked fifth. Refer to Page 3 for complete poll information. Last Action UND opened the NCHC schedule last weekend with a sweep at Colorado College, winning 3-1 on Friday and 7-2 on Saturday. Senior forward Mark MacMillan (Penticton, British Columbia) keyed the offense with five goals and seven points in the series, including his first collegiate hat trick and a career-high five points on Saturday. Sophomore defenseman Paul LaDue (2g, 3a), senior forward Michael Parks (4a) and freshman forward Nick Schmaltz (3a) also enjoyed big series offensively. Junior Zane McIntyre (Thief River Falls, Minn.) stopped 52 of 55 shots in the series for a.945 save percentage. National Honors MacMillan and LaDue were both recognized by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) on Monday after combining for 12 points in the sweep at CC. MacMillan, who racked up seven points in the two wins, was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week, while LaDue, who had five points in the series, was the NCHC Defenseman of the Week. MacMillan registered his first collegiate hat trick and collected a career-high five points in Saturday s 7-2 win over the Tigers. MacMillan also scored two of UND s three goals in Friday s 3-1 win. He also 60 percent (24-for- 40) of his faceoffs in the series, including a 14- for-18 mark on Saturday. LaDue enjoyed a 5-point series, including a career-best four points on Saturday. He scored two power-play goals and added a pair of assists Saturday while leading the team with six shots on goal. In Friday s 3-1 victory, LaDue assisted on Brendan O Donnell s (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) game-winning goal. Easy Mac MacMillan s 5-goal, 7-point series was notable for several reasons: It was UND s first 5-goal weekend since Brandon Bochenski did it Dec at the 2002 Subway Holiday Classic against Brown and Bemidji State. Freshman Zach Parise did it earlier that year against Canisius and Michigan in his first two collegiate games. The last time a UND player scored five goals in a 2-game series against the same team was Dec , 1999, when Jeff Panzer did it against Minnesota. The last UND player with seven points in a series was Matt Frattin, who had two goals and five assists against Michigan Tech March 4-5, Two of MacMillan s three goals on Saturday were short-handed. He joined Russ Romaniuk (12/02/90 vs. Maine) and Mike Burggraf (12/09/78 vs. Northern Arizona) as the only players in program history to score two shorthanded goals in a single game. Famous Dave Saturday s win at CC was Dave Hakstol s 263rd career victory as head coach, moving him past his predecessor and current Omaha head coach Dean Blais for second all-time at North Dakota.

3 OCTOBER 21, 2014 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 3 John Gino Gasparini, for whom Hakstol played at UND, holds the school record with 392 wins from : WINNINGEST COACHES IN UND HISTORY Rk. Coach (Years) Record 1. Gino Gasparini ( ) Dave Hakstol (2004-pres.) Dean Blais ( ) Rube Bjorkman ( ) Cliff Fido Purpur ( ) A seven-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, Hakstol has guided UND to an incredible six NCAA Frozen Four appearances, four WCHA Final Five playoff championships, two WCHA regular season titles and has advanced to the NCAA postseason in each of his 10 years. The only active Division I coach with a winning record in every season of his career, Hakstol has guided his teams to either an NCAA Frozen Four berth, a conference regular season championship or a conference playoff title in nine of his first 10 seasons. Non-Conference Numbers UND s Oct split with BSU to open the regular season gave it a (.696) record in non-conference play under 11th-year head coach Dave Hakstol: Year W-L-T Opponents Maine, BC, NE, Canisius, BSU Miami, MSU, NE, UNH, BSU, Harvard Quinnipiac, Maine, Dartmouth, STL, BSU MSU, BC, NE, UNH, BSU BU, UMass, Cornell, Harvard, BSU Merrimack, OSU, Miami, Niagara, ND, Cornell Alaska, Maine, Notre Dame, UMD, Robert Morris Air Force, BC, Maine, Harvard, Clarkson Alaska, UAA, BU, Notre Dame, Holy Cross Vermont, BU, St. Lawrence, Northern Mich., BSU BSU Total (.696) UND s remaining non-conference schedule includes Providence (Oct ), Air Force (Nov. 1), Wisconsin (Nov. 7-8), Lake Superior State (Dec. 5-6) and Niagara (Jan ). Harvesting Wins Typically known as a second-half team, UND s sweep last week at Colorado College was its first October sweep, home or away, since 2010 at Bemidji State. A win on Friday against Providence would give UND its first 4-game winning streak in the month of October since 2002 when it went during the month. A sweep over the Friars would give UND its first 5-win October since the Hrkac Circus team went in 1986 on its way to a NCAA championship. Freshman Firsts Freshman defenseman Tucker Poolman (East Grand Forks, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal in Saturday s 7-2 win at CC, a first-period power-play tally that stood up as the gamewinner. Later in the same game, freshman forward Johnny Simonson (Grand Forks, N.D.) collected his first career point with an assist on Paul LaDue s (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) thirdperiod goal. Power Surge After opening the season 1-for-10 on opening weekend against Bemidji State (Oct ), North Dakota s power-play exploded for six goals on 16 attempts last weekend against Colorado College, including a 5-for-11 outburst on Saturday. It was UND s first game with at least five power-play goals since going 5-for-9 on March 5, 2011 in an 11-2 win at Michigan Tech. Road Warriors UND is off to a start on the road for the first time since , when a team led by freshman forward Zach Parise started away from home with wins over Canisius, Michigan, Princeton and Yale. Locking Down the Lead UND is this season when leading after 40 minutes, continuing a trend under 11th-year head coach Dave Hakstol. Last season UND went when leading after two periods and has lost just seven of its last 130 in those situations, going since the start of the season: UND When Leading After 2 Periods Year Record (.840) (.865) (.889) (.920) (.958) (.905) (.842) (.952) (1.000) Totals (.898) The last time UND lost when leading after two periods was Nov. 1, 2013 when a 1-0 lead turned into a 3-2 loss to visiting St. Cloud State. 13 OCTOBER 21, 2014 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA MEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES PAGE 13 Now in his 11th season as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, Dave Hakstol has established himself as one of the most accomplished and well-respected bench bosses in NCAA hockey. The only active Division I coach with a winning record in every season of his career, Hakstol has guided his teams to either an NCAA Frozen Four berth, a conference regular season championship or a conference playoff title in nine of his first 10 seasons. Through his first decade as UND head coach, Hakstol has become the third-winningest coach in program history, compiling a (.647) overall record. A seven-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, Hakstol has guided UND to an incredible six NCAA Frozen Four appearances, four WCHA Final Five playoff championships, two WCHA regular season titles and has advanced to the NCAA postseason in each of his 10 years. He was named WCHA Coach of the Year in Last season, Hakstol guided the program to its 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament berth, the longest active streak in Division I hockey. He enjoyed his 10th 20-plus win season in as many years as head coach, reaching the 25-win plateau for the seventh time. Hakstol, 35 years old when he was named UND s head men s hockey coach on July 9, 2004, is just the 15th head men s hockey coach in school history and only the program s fourth head coach in the past 44 years. Hakstol, who wore the Kelly Green and White from , is also just the fifth former UND player to also become head coach at North Dakota. Hakstol joined rare company when he took UND to the Frozen Four in his first four seasons as a collegiate head coach, joining Jack Parker and Doug Woog as the only three coaches to accomplish that feat. In Hakstol s first season ( ) as head coach, he led a team with nine seniors to the Frozen Four. In his second season ( ), he led a team with 13 freshmen and just two seniors to the Frozen Four. In his third season, Hakstol took UND to the Frozen Four yet again, and sophomore forward Ryan Duncan won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the best player in college hockey. In , his fourth season, Hakstol led UND to a overall record and WCHA mark (second place). UND went overall and in conference play in en route to its WCHA-leading 14th league championship. Hakstol was also recognized as WCHA Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In , Hakstol and UND added another piece of hardware to the program s championship lore with a Broadmoor Trophy as the WCHA Final Five champions, the second Broadmoor Trophy of Hakstol s distinguished tenure. Hakstol led UND to a overall record and a WCHA mark, landing an eighth straight NCAA postseason appearance. In , Hakstol led UND to a second MacNaughton Cup in three years as WCHA champions, giving UND an NCAA men s hockey-leading 15 conference titles. UND also won its second straight Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA playoff champions. In the process, Hakstol s squad turned in the third-winningest season (32 wins) in the program s illustrious history. Three of Hakstol s players garnered All-America honors in : forward Matt Frattin (first team), defenseman Chay Genoway (first team) and goalie Aaron Dell (second team). Frattin, who led the nation with 36 goals, was also a Hobey Baker Award Hobey Hat Trick finalist and the WCHA Player of the Year. He would debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada that same season. Genoway was named the WCHA s Most Outstanding Student-Athlete, while Dell won a school-record 30 games, toppling a 24-year-old record previously held by Hockey Hall of Famer Ed Belfour. THE DAVE HAKSTOL FILE Hometown Warburg, Alberta Education Bachelor s Degree: Financial Management (UND 96) Family Wife, Erinn; daughter, Avery; son, Brenden Coaching 2004-present: Head Coach, UND : Associate Head Coach, UND : General Manager/Head Coach, Sioux City (USHL) 1998: Head Coach, USA/USHL Team, IIHF Four Nations Cup 1998: Head Coach, Central District Team USA, Select 16 Festival Coaching Awards 7-time Spencer Penrose Award finalist ( , 2011) : Inside College Hockey National Coach of the Year : WCHA Coach of the Year : USHL Coach of the Year Playing Career : Minnesota Moose (IHL) : Indianapolis Ice (IHL) : University of North Dakota In , during UND s 11th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, senior linemates Danny Kristo and Corban Knight were both named Hobey Baker Award finalists and All-Americans, while sophomore defenseman Nick Mattson distinguished himself in the classroom by earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. UND also reinforced its reputation as the top draw in NCAA Division I men s hockey by leading the nation in average home attendance (11,592), the only program in the country to average better than 10,000 fans per home game. In , Hakstol led an injury-depleted team to an unprecedented third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy as WCHA Final Five champions and was named Inside College Hockey s National Coach of the Year. With eight players missing 110 games due to injury, UND was forced to dress fewer than 18 skaters on 14 occasions, yet went 11-3 in those games, earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Regional, and advanced to the regional championship game for the sixth time in eight years. In the classroom, senior Brad Eidsness was named WCHA Most Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year while also receiving postgraduate scholarships from the WCHA and NCAA. The trademark of North Dakota hockey during Hakstol s tenure has been UND s ability to play its best hockey at the most crucial time of the year in the playoffs. During his first 10 years, Hakstol has led UND to an overall postseason record of (.704) that includes a conference tournament record and NCAA postseason mark. UND s 50 combined NCAA and conference playoff wins the last 10 seasons are 19 more than any other NCHC team during that time. UND has also furthered its reputation for doing an outstanding job in preparing players for professional hockey careers and careers beyond hockey. Last season, nearly 50 products of the program played professionally, 38 of whom were coached by Hakstol and 13 of whom reached the National Hockey League. Among the 13 was former captain Matt Greene, who led the Los Angeles Kings to their second Stanley Cup championship in the last three years. In the last eight seasons alone, 12 of Hakstol s former UND players have debuted the NHL the year after completing their collegiate careers, including Chay Genoway ( ), Brad Malone ( ), Matt Frattin ( ), Chris VandeVelde ( ), T.J. Oshie ( ), Chris Porter ( ), Taylor Chorney ( ), Brian Lee ( ), Brock Nelson ( ), Matt Smaby ( ), Drew Stafford ( ) and Travis Zajac ( ). In , Toews made the jump directly to the Blackhawks after playing two years at UND. He was a finalist for the NHL s Rookie of the Year Award and in the summer of 2008 was named the captain of the Blackhawks, becoming the
