3 From the Presidents Hanger There have been some changes with our relationship with the City of Dayton. Changes in the City have forced them to look to our facility more to host special events other than mud volleyball. Our usage agreement with the City states that they have to give us a 30 day notice to use our facility for a special event. Which brings me to the topic of the month. Santiago s helicopter fly this year, has had to be displaced due to an Artemis Bicycle Rally that will be using our field on Saturday Sept 26 th. There are so many helicopter events tucked in around that date, weekends before and weekends after, that Santiago is going to have to move his event to another club in the Cincinnati area, just for this year. The Air Masters Club in Cincinnati has been gracious enough to host the event for Santiago this year. This brings up another point that I would like to review. Since the City has had to accommodate changes in their event schedules (mostly due to Carillon Park not accepting festival events anymore) Our facility will be used more by the City. It was brought up at the last meeting that We should have more fun fly's on the weekends I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. WE is just that ANY member in the club has the right to say. Hey, I d like to host a fun fly. The club will pay for the food, drink, and even make fliers to pass out to the local hobby shops to get the word out. I have the event reservation forms with the city, so we can at least try and reserve the date for the fun fly. If you decide to go with a date, let me know ASAP because I have to get that date submitted as quickly as possible before the City might book the field for an event that they have been asked to host at our field. If you have any questions, call me or catch me at the field. I won t be at this month s meeting because I ll be up at IRCHA ( the helicopter fun fly at the AMA Fields in Muncie) Have a great month and see you at the field! Joe The Dayton Wingmasters Swap & Fly CANCELLED Sorry to announce that the 2015 Dayton Wingmasters Swap and Fly that was scheduled for August 8 th, 2015 has been cancelled. Hopefully we can get it back on track for TAILSPINS Page 3
4 Notes from the Safety Director It seems that my own adventures in modeling are providing good and relevant topics for the monthly safety articles. Last month I mentioned I had taken my eyes off of the airplane on final approach to adjust engine trim and landed quicker and shorter than planned. This month s story can also provide information to reflect upon. As some of you know most of my RC experience is with nitro and gas powered fixed wing airplanes. I just finished my hybrid biplane. It is a four stroke nitro biplane with electric ducted fan auxiliary power. My electric powered building experience is limited. I have almost finished an allelectric powered three meter wing span motor glider. The working on the electric motor glider is the basis of this month s story. Some relevant background information is provided. When building with nitro/gas powered models, installation of the engine is just another part of the overall process. On the workbench the engine cannot start/run there is no fuel. Even with electronic ignition and/or on-board glow with no fuel the engine cannot run. The above is the majority of my building experience. The motor glider is on a robart plastic building cradle, motor and folding prop installed, rudder and elevator linkages all set up. In front of me on the workbench is a wing panel and I am trying the install the spoiler mechanisms. It is a tight fit and the process is quite a fiddle. The transmitter and receiver is on. I am using the three position flap switch on this transmitter to actuate the spoilers (down, mid and high). The flap switch is located above the throttle/rudder lever on the left side of the transmitter. I reached over to actuate the spoiler switch and you know the rest of the story. The throttle went full, 14/8 folding prop spinning wildly. Small tools, a charging cord and other bits and pieces went flying. The prop even cut a new sharpie pen in half (blue if you want to know). The glider nor I was hurt. Lesson learned, be extra careful when working with new to you equipment and procedures. If able, I recommend when working on one battery powered electric models remove the propeller until all building and setting up is finished. Have fun and be safe and see you at the field. Thanks Pete Hanley Dayton Wingmasters Safety Director Friendly reminder that the speed limit into the park is 20 MPH. I followed a member down Siebenthaler the other day while I was working and when they turned onto the drive it was like they just pulled onto IR75SB. By the time I got back to the gate they were already thru it and had it locked. Metro Parks patrols that area and they may not be so kind when they see you driving that fast. TAILSPINS Page 4
5 Mastering the Straight and Level Flight By Dan Wolanski, Model Airplane News If you ve seen individual IMAC maneuvers, you ve probably noticed one factor that ties everything together: straight and level flight. When flying an aerobatic sequence, you must start and finish each of your maneuvers in straight and level flight. Since straight and level flight signifies the end of one maneuver and the beginning of the next (see Figure 1), it s fitting to discuss this portion of your sequence. You should practice straight and level as much as you do any other maneuver. It is also where new precision-aerobatics pilots should begin. It may seem like the most boring thing to do, but in reality, straight and level flight is one of the most difficult maneuvers to master. Sure, rolling circles, tail slides and multiple snaps each have their own levels of difficulty, but think about what comes before and after each one of these: straight and level flight. One of the most difficult things to do after performing a rolling circle or a snap is to retain the same flight path. The judges look for your ability to regain control and execute the exit of the maneuver. To score well, you must learn what wings level looks like at various flight altitudes and box positions. And for this, there is only one solution: practice. Begin by flying your plane parallel to the runway about 100 yards away from yourself. When you reach the end of the aerobatic box (1,800 feet wide maximum), pull the plane vertical. If your plane does not head straight up, you didn t have your wings level (see Figure 2). Typically, most fliers hold their inboard wing too low during what looks to them like straight and level flight; when the plane is pulled into a vertical climb, it will start to come in toward the pilot. Continue doing this at various altitudes until you can achieve a vertical pullout. As the plane continues upward, other forces such as prop torque will affect your plane, but you need only concentrate on the initial pull up for this exercise. If you find that you have to apply rudder immediately after you pull up-elevator, then you are not flying level. High-wing, mid-wing and low-wing planes will all look different in flight with respect to the ground. Your paint scheme can also throw off your perception of your plane s attitude. Learn what wings-level looks like by practicing it over and over. Now let s take the wings-level exercise one step farther: inverted. Yep, throw out your previous sight picture and start again. In an aerobatic sequence, straight and level flight is not limited to upright flight only. In fact, you may spend as much as 30 percent of your flight time inverted while in between maneuvers. You also need to know what inverted wings-level flight looks like. Continued on page 6 TAILSPINS Page 5
6 Just a Reminder Wednesday Nights are Trainer Nights Starting at 5:00 PM each Wednesday Trainer Night starts. This is not only one of the Agreements that the Dayton Wingmasters have with the City of Dayton for allowing us to use this great site but also the way we can recruit new members into the Dayton Wingmaster Family. We are not telling you that you are not allowed to fly on Wednesday nights during this time, we are just asking that you be respectful to the student and instructor who is flying at the time. We all stated out the same way and we should all remember how nervous we were to try and fly and when you add the distraction of another airplane zipping around in the air it makes it even more stressful. We usually have a lot of spectators that will show up to watch and if there are no students on the line we encourage you to go fly for them, but if you see that buddy box walk up to the flight line turn the sky over to them. Wednesday Night is also a great time to bring that plane you have been building and have some of the more experienced pilots look it over or even give it a maiden flight. Straight and Level Flight continued from page 5 Push down-elevator to enter into a hammerhead at each end of the box, and notice which way the plane immediately leans. Fix the lean angle on the next try with your ailerons immediately before adding the elevator push from straight and level flight. Once the push begins, only rudder should be used. The same thing goes for upright flight. Use the ailerons before the pull, and then use the rudder to correct during and after the pull into the vertical. Wind correction is another factor that will influence straight and level flight and your vertical lines. (Note: wind correction means that you must lean the plane s heading slightly into the wind to keep the plane s flight path parallel to the runway and perpendicular to the ground during a vertical climb. See Figure 3.) If the plane is crabbed during a vertical entry, it will immediately lean toward the direction of crab. You may need to take some of the crab out of the plane with rudder immediately before the pull. (I emphasized the word some to signify that there is no hard-and-fast rule concerning how much to remove.) A certain amount of crab-angle wind correction should be maintained to keep it parallel to the runway. In IMAC competition, you may want to leave in some of this crab since all vertical maneuvers are affected by the wind direction. Each plane will act differently depending on its weight, the length of its tail moment and the amount of crosswind velocity. The only way to find how much crab angle you ll need to remove is by practicing. It may seem simple, but I can t over-emphasize how important it is to master straight and level flight for aspiring aerobatic pilots and seasoned veterans, as well. Think of it as the glue that holds your sequence of maneuvers together. TAILSPINS Page 6
