1 Stewards' Reports Print MELBOURNE RACING CLUB (AT CAULFIELD) Date: Saturday, 8 February 2014 Track: Dead 4, upgraded to Good 3 at 12.10pm Penetrometer: 5.24 Weather: Fine Rail: True Stewards Panel: Mr T Bailey (Chairman), Mr R Montgomery, Mr S Bettess, Mr G Bush, Mr S Carey (Cadet) Riding Changes / Jockey Information Race Horse Rider Replaced By Reason 1 Settlers Way (NZ) O Murphy D Smith Unavailable Race 1 BMW MELBOURNE HANDICAP metres: As Apprentice O Murphy was delayed en-route and there was no other apprentice rider available, Stewards allowed D Smith to replace him as the rider of Settlers Way (NZ). Hinchley Wood and Aurum Spirit were both slow to begin. Settlers Way (NZ) had a tendency to over-race in the early stages. H Coffey, rider of Aurum Spirit which performed poorly, could offer no explanation for the poor performance other than when placed under pressure near the 400m it failed to respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination of Aurum Spirit revealed a slower than normal recovery rate. Race 2 HERALD SUN CARLYON CUP metres: Chase The Rainbow was presented in the mounting yard with winkers and a tongue tie which were not part of the horse s declared gear. The winkers were removed in the mounting yard and the tongue tie was removed behind the barriers. Trainer Mr R Hore-Lacy was fined the sum of $200. Chase The Rainbow pulled a shoe on the way to the barriers and had to be re-plated. This incident delayed the start of the event by 3 minutes. Bass Strait (NZ) was slow to begin. Star Rolling jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and hampered Anagold. A post-race veterinary examination of Bit of Hell (IRE) revealed no abnormalities.

2 G Boss, rider of Pakal (GER), was questioned regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages as to whether it was an option for him to take up a more forward position given the slow tempo of the race. G Boss explained that Pakal (GER) was having its first start back from a spell and as the field progressed past the 1400m he was hoping that Chase The Rainbow would go forward and lead which would have allowed him to gain a position just off the pace outside Bit of Hell. G Boss added that as this did not occur and at the same time Star Rolling maintained a position of one off the fence he elected to restrain his mount and gain cover behind Star Rolling rather than being three-wide without cover. G Boss s explanation was noted. Race 3 HYLAND RACE COLOURS AUTUMN STAKES metres: Subsequent to this race, Stewards upgraded the track category to a Good 3, at 12.10pm. Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mr R Laing, trainer of Polanski, indicating that the colt was suffering from a skin rash, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Polanski on vet s advice at 7.40am. Prior to correct weight, L Nolen (Bardem (NZ)), viewed the Stewards film before deciding not to lodge an objection. Accord was slow to begin. Bardem (NZ) jumped away awkwardly. In the middle stages, Late Charge had a tendency to race keenly. Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, Pyrrolic was held up when unable to obtain a clear run. Pyrrolic was again held up near the 150m. Bring Something was held up rounding the home turn and until after passing the 200m. Bring Something was again held up near the 100m and went to the line not being fully tested. Rounding the home turn and in the straight, Rock Hero layed out. M Rodd (Rock Hero) reported that his mount was inclined to shift out off the track in the early stages of the race and in his opinion, it had difficulty handling the Melbourne way of racing. Near the 300m, Bardem (NZ) shifted out to obtain clear running and made contact with Late Charge. Near the 100m, Bring Something attempted a narrow run to the inside of Rock Hero and in doing so brushed Countersnip. Over the concluding stages Late Charge shifted in under pressure, bumping Bardem (NZ), before being restrained by its rider. C Williams (Accord) reported that his mount did not let down at all throughout the race. Trainer Mr M Kent will be contacted in the coming days to establish how the colt pulled up. A post-race veterinary examination of Pyrrolic revealed no abnormalities. Race 4 KEVIN HAYES STAKES metres: Marianne (NZ) and Patricia Dawn were both slow to begin. Diamond Glow and Sublime Amazone both raced wide without cover.

3 Passing the 800m, Shamalia shifted out and inconvenienced The Huntress. Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, Marianne (NZ) was held up when unable to obtain a clear run. On straightening Sublime Amazone had to be checked when tightened for room between Bound For Earth, which shifted in slightly and Demandz (NZ), which shifted out away from The Huntress. Near the 100m, Patricia Dawn was momentarily held up when disappointed for a run between Spirits Dance and Shamalia. A post-race veterinary examination of Whistle Baby revealed no abnormalities. Race 5 SPORTINGBET BLUE DIAMOND PRELUDE (FILLIES) metres: Golconda was slow to begin and raced ungenerously in the early stages. Mumbai Rock, Top Dolly and Singularity raced wide in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 700m, Royal Ocean commenced to over-race, shifted out and brushed Golconda, then got its head up and became unbalanced. On straightening, Lumosty was momentarily held up for a clear run. A post-race veterinary examination of Top Dolly revealed the filly to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr T Hughes (Jnr) was notified that prior to Top Dolly racing again, he must provide a veterinary clearance. Race 6 SPORTINGBET BLUE DIAMOND PRELUDE (C&G) metres: Malaguerra had to be re-saddled behind the gates. Mohave was removed from its barrier and examined by the Club s veterinary surgeon after it got its hind leg got caught on the partition. Mohave was passed fit to run. The start of the race was delayed 5 minutes due to the above incidents. Jabali jumped away awkwardly. Searle was slow to begin. On jumping away, Francesco was hampered when tightened for room between Rubick and Uncle Keithy, which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in. Shortly after the start Pure Addiction was hampered by Cornrow which after jumping away, shifted out abruptly. Geromayo and Berlutti both raced wide without cover. Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Duckworth hung in. Duckworth continued to hang in for the remainder of the straight. Near the 200m, Searle had to be checked to avoid the weakening Geromayo which was taken out by Malaguerra, which shifted out slightly.

4 In the straight, Malaguerra was held up from the 200m until after passing the 100m. Also in the straight, Cornrow layed in under pressure. Near the 150m Stratum Star was momentarily held up. Near the 100m, Silent Whisper had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Mohave, which shifted in slightly. A post-race veterinary examination of Mohave revealed no abnormalities. When questioned, G Boss (Nostradamus) stated that he was reluctant to ride his mount out over the concluding stages as the horse had shifted a plate during the race and did not feel right in its action. He added that the colt appeared to have quartered its heel and a post-race veterinary examination confirmed this. Trainer Mr J Hawkes was notified that prior to Nostradamus racing again, he must provide a veterinary certificate. Race 7 SCHWEPPES RUBITON STAKES metres: Pocket Rockets raced wide without cover. Excelorada jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and brushed Lion of Belfort. Rounding the home turn and until near the 200m, Lion of Belfort was held up and unable to obtain a clear run. Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, Iconic was held up. Better Than Ready brushed the running rail on a number of occasions in the straight. Inside the final 100m, Better Than Ready was placed in restricted room to the inside of First Command when making ground. Trainer Mr A Freedman was fined $200 for presenting First Command in the mounting yard four minutes earlier than the advertised start time of the race. S Parnham (Excelorada) was severely reprimanded for his use of the whip on his mount, which was out of contention. A veterinary examination of Pocket Rockets revealed no abnormalities. When questioned, G Boss (Lion of Belfort), explained that he was disappointed with the colt s performance over the final 100m of the race and was of the opinion that it was entitled to finish the race off stronger than it did. A post-race veterinary examination of Lion of Belfort revealed no abnormalities. Race 8 SPORTINGBET C F ORR STAKES metres: Finishing Card was marginally slow to begin. Eurozone jumped away awkwardly. In the straight, Shamus Award hung in under pressure and as a result of this its rider, C Williams was unable to ride the colt out in his normal manner.

5 M Walker (Hawkspur) reported that in his opinion the gelding s overall performance was disappointing after failing to respond to his riding in the straight. A veterinary examination of Hawkspur revealed no abnormalities. Race 9 ROUTLEYS BAKERY BELLMAINE STAKES metres: Tykook jumped away awkwardly. Time for Julia and Tykook raced wide without cover. Rounding the home turn and until after passing the 200m, Bonaria was held up when unable to obtain a clear run. Arinosa was held up rounding the home turn and until after passing the 100m. Near the 100m Arinosa, which was held up for clear running, shifted out and improved its position and in doing so, brushed Power Princess. Inside the 100m, Koonoomoo was accidentally struck on the nose by the whip of G Boss, rider of Spending (NZ). Subsequent to the race, Koonoomoo was found to be suffering from mild heat stress. D Oliver (Power Princess) could offer no real excuse for the mare s disappointing performance today other than it may have resented being placed in restricted room rounding the home turn. Trainer M Price will be contacted in the coming days to see how the mare had pulled up C Williams (Hi Belle) explained that after being caught wide in the early stages, his mount failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Hi Belle, which performed below market expectations, revealed no abnormalities.
