Dear Handball Friends, Welcome to the quarter-final stage of the VELUX EHF Champions League. I would like to congratulate all eight teams on making it this far in Europe s premier men s club handball competition it really is quite some achievement! This season we see the traditional powerhouses of men s handball, including the last two seasons champions FC Barcelona Intersport and THW Kiel, joined in the quarter-finals by some new faces. Füchse Berlin and AG Kobenhavn are playing their very first season in the competition and RK Cimos Koper are in the quarter-finals of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time in their club s history. There is a new development too in the quarter-finals, as AG Kobenhavn take on FC Barcelona Intersport, in the Parken football stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. With 22,000 fans expected, this event looks set to break all spectator records and has already attracted tremendous interest from fans and TV stations around the world. I am sure that the hearts and minds of all players and coaches are firmly set on winning a place in the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in the LANXESS arena, Cologne on 26 and 27 May They are now just two games away from making this dream a reality. Whatever the results there will be tears, some of joy and some of sadness, but the games will be the very best of the sport we all love. Enjoy watching top-class handball and good luck to all those taking part! Tor Lian EHF President

Eight final steps to Cologne Preview of the first leg matches in the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finals. The first legs of the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finals begin on Friday (20 April), and the line-up boasts five nations, two debutants, the team with the most EHF Champions League titles and every EHF Men s Champions League winner since the season! Just eight matches remain before we will know the line-up of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 at a sold-out Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the highlight of club handball. But for all clubs, the road to Cologne is steep and rocky as they must navigate tricky quarter final clashes. All three Spanish teams which started in the Group Stages remain in the competition, while two out of four German teams and clubs from Croatia, Slovenia and Denmark have proceeded to the second knockout stage of this season s competition. Atletico Madrid and defending champions FC Barcelona Intersport had qualified for both previous VELUX EHF FINAL4 events. Kiel had participated (and won the first edition), while all other contenders never been to Cologne before. The three current top scorers in the VELUX EHF Champions League still have the chance to extend their number of goals: Zlatko Horvat (RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb/80 goals), Mikkel Hansen (AG Kobenhavn/79) and Kiril Lazarov (Atletico Madrid/74). In total seven of the ten best scorers have made their way to the quarter finals. AG Kobenhavn and Füchse Berlin are VELUX EHF Champions League debutants, while RK Cimos Koper have reached the quarter finals for the first time. In contrast THW Kiel, FC Barcelona Intersport, Atletico Madrid and RK Zagreb are constant participants in the last eight. Kiel can qualify for an EHF Champions League semi-final for the eighth time, while if Barcelona progress to the last four it will be the tenth such time. AG Kobenhavn (DEN) vs. FC Barcelona Intersport () Friday, April , 20:10 hrs local time The "handboldfesten" is expected to be a sell-out with the biggest crowd ever at a European Cup match. AG Kobenhavn expect more than 21,000 spectators in the Parken football arena, where the Danish champions broke the world record last season with 36,000 spectators in the Danish final against Silkeborg. On Monday evening 19,600 tickets were sold, as mentioned by AGK manager Sören Colding on the club website.

Both teams are number one in their respective leagues: FC Barcelona Intersport are leaders in Spain, but only two points ahead of Atletico Madrid. Kobenhavn are dominant in Denmark; after reaching top spot in the normal round unbeaten, they have already qualified for the semi final of the Danish league. Three current AGK players will face their former club: Mikkel Hansen, Joachim Boldsen and Kasper Hvidt. "A dream comes true," was the first reaction of Hansen, when the draw was over. Never before have both teams met in an international match. AGK is still unbeaten at home with five victories and one draw (against THW Kiel), while FC Barcelona Intersport only lost one away game this season - the first leg of the Last 16 in Montpellier. While the hosts will miss goalkeeper Steinar Ege (rupture of Achilles, replaced by Mikkel Henriksen), FC Barcelona can pick from a fully fit team. Five times EHF Champions League winner Siarhei Rutenka was suspended for the first match, but his club successfully filed an appeal so now he is eligible to play on Friday. Barcelona eliminated Montpellier in the Last 16, while Kobenhavn did not have any problems against IK Sävehof from Sweden. Watch the match LIVE at ehftv.com Reale Ademar Leon () vs. Füchse Berlin (GER) Saturday, April , 17:30 hrs local time The third-ranked team from Spanish league takes on the third-ranked team from the German league whatever happens, there will be one surprise club making their way to Cologne. Whilst Reale Ademar Leon is the only quarter finalist to have finished third after the Group Stage, Füchse are the only club fourth-ranked after the Group Stage. And as the Germans are Champions League debutants, both have never met before in an international competition. Despite some injury problems throughout the whole season, the Asobal team coached by Isidoro Martinez have qualified for the quarter finals for the fourth time in their club s history. The key to this success is their strength on home soil, as despite having hosted top teams Ademar is still unbeaten in their "Leon s den". They took victories against Kobenhavn, Montpellier and Veszprem and only tied with THW Kiel in their previous matches. Füchse on the other hand have shown that they are best in away games, by winning at Veszprem and Hamburg and drawing at Chekhovskie Medvedi. Berlin lost only two away matches at Madrid and Kielce.

So everybody expects that the first leg will be the key to success. In the Last 16 Leon beat Veszprem by coming from behind to record a three-goal victory, which proved enough in a thrilling final match in Hungary. Berlin won both encounters against their German colleagues from Hamburg in the Last 16. Watch the match LIVE at ehftv.com RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb (CRO) vs. THW Kiel (GER) Saturday, April , 19:15 hrs local time The duel of the record-breaking German and Croatian champions is the only quarter final where there is a long history between the two sides, having faced each other eight times in the EHF Champions League, and the balance is equal with each three victories and two draws. Kiel have never won at Zagreb before, Zagreb have never won at Kiel - and in case of knockout stage matches, THW was the aggregate winner in all three cases (semi finals 1998 and 2000, quarter finals 2009). The duel is overshadowed by the sacking of Zagreb coach Ivica Obrvan, who was replaced by Croatian national coach Slavko Goluza. After hitting the brakes hard, Zagreb hope for a wake-up call for their players after missing the SEHA league title. On the other hand THW Kiel is close to win their 17th national championship. Before their Wednesday s match at EHF Cup winner FA Göppingen, Kiel had extended their series to 54:0 points in all 27 matches. Zagreb ranked second after the Group Stage, while Kiel won their group. The Croats needed to work extremely hard to eliminate Macedonian champions Metalurg Skopje, whilst THW had an easy walk against Polish champions Wisla Plock in the Last 16. Kiel have lost only one match in all competitions this season: the VELUX EHF Champions League game on home ground against Montpellier, although they also tied at Leon. Zagreb have lost three matches, at home against FC Barcelona Intersport and at Sävehof and Skopje but the Croats were the only team to take the points from the defending champions at Palau Blaugrana. Watch the match LIVE at ehftv.com RK Cimos Koper (SLO) vs. BM Atletico Madrid () Saturday, April , 18:00 hrs local time Quarter final debutant against pure experience: last season s EHF Challenge Cup winner will meet the three times EHF Champions League winner. Atletico Madrid (formerly known as BM Ciudad Real) have reached the quarter finals for the eighth time in their eighth participation in the EHF Champions League but have never faced Cimos Koper before.

The Spaniards, currently second in the Asobal league below FC Barcelona Intersport, have led a charmed life in international matches. Despite hard opponents in the Group Stage they were the second team to qualify for the Last 16 and lost only one match in the first stage of this competition at Veszprem. The Last 16 meant an easy job against Kadetten Schaffhausen. In contrast RK Cimos Koper reached the unexpected: After the title triple in the last season EHF Challenge Cup, Slovenian championship and Slovenian cup the Adriatic club finished second in their group below HSV. In the Last 16 Cimos Koper had two thrilling battles with Vive Targi Kielce, in which the final goal after 120 minutes decided. From a statistical point of view Atletico are the favourites, but Koper do not have any pressure as they have already achieved more than they had hoped for. And the audience in their Arena is known to be very enthusiastic, especially for this match which is surely their most important this season. Watch the match LIVE at ehftv.com

Team Profile - FC Barcelona Intersport () Road to the Quarter-Finals Nobody expected that the clash of the titans would end with the biggest difference of all Last 16 duels, but after losing at Montpellier, Barcelona overran their opponent by counter attacks in the rematch on home ground. Before, in the Group Phase, the defending champions were unbeatable in the first eight Rounds. After qualifying for the Last 16 very early the Catalans surprisingly lost against Zagreb at home, but secured first place in their group. 15 Team Profile - THW Kiel (GER) Road to the Quarter-Finals For the 13 th time in history THW Kiel have reached the Quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League and they were the first of all to proceed after two easy-earned victories in the Last 16 against Orlen Wisla Plock from Poland in only five days. The 2009/10 winners of the VELUX EHF Champions League needed some time to get started in the Group Phase, but with six straight victories and a final draw in Kobenhavn they finished first in the end. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: German runners-up Qualification for Last 16: winner of Group D Qualification for the Quarterfinals: 36:24, 27:24 against Wisla Plock Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 15 Winner (2): 2006/2007, 2009/2010 Final (3): 1999/2000, 2007/2008, 2008/2009 Semi-Final (2): 1996/1997, 2000/2001 Quarter-Final (5): 1998/1999, 2002/2003, 2004/2005, 2005/2006, 2010/2011 Group Phase (2): 1994/1995, 1995/1996 German champion: 1957, 1962, 1963, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 German Cup winner: 1998, 1999, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 Coach: Alfred Gislason, since 2008 Key Players: Filip Jicha, Thierry Omeyer

Team Profile - BM Atletico Madrid () Road to the Quarter-Finals For the eighth time Atletico (formerly BM Ciudad Real) have participated in the EHF Champions League, and for the eighth time the Spaniards have qualified for the Quarter-finals. The Last 16 was an easy task against Swiss champions Kadetten Schaffhausen. Winning the one-sided away match at Schaffhausen clearly meant an early decision, losing the re-match at home was a big sensation, but without any negative impact for the Spaniards. After seven victories and two draws against Medvedi, Madrid had qualified already after Round 8 of the Group Stage for the Last 16 and won their group after the ninth round of matches. The one and only defeat in the first stage was in Round 10 against Veszprem, which was not a decisive match. 17 Team Profile -Füchse Berlin (GER) Road to the Quarter-Finals In their first ever season in the VELUX EHF Champions League Füchse remain the big surprise. As the only team ranked fourth after the Group Stage they proceeded to the Quarter-finals after eliminating last season s semi-finalist HSV Hamburg by two close victories in the Last 16. Two last minute goals in the first leg built a good base, and at Hamburg, Füchse even kept their cool when they were five goals behind in the second half. Already in the Group Stage they had to wait until the final second of the final match, but beating Bjerringbro in their last encounter - a real thriller - brought the decisive points for the Foxes to march through to the Last 16. Beating Hamburg twice were not the only high level results: The Germans showed their strength already in the first stage with an opening draw at Medvedi and a victory at Veszprem, but in the tight Group B they had a nervous wait until the end to reach their first objective now their next dream came true. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: Third placed in Germany Qualification for Last 16: Fourth placed in Group B Qualification for the Quarterfinals: 32:30, 24:23 against HSV Hamburg Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 1 National champion: - None National Cup winner: - None Coach: Dagur Sigurdsson, since 2009 Key Players: Iker Romero, Silvio Heinevetter

Team Profile - Reale Ademar Leon () Road to the Quarter-Finals It took ten long years, but now Reale Ademar Leon are back amongst the top eight teams of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the fourth time in their club history. But the Spaniards needed a real thriller to proceed: After beating Veszprem (Hungary) on home ground luckily and thanks to a final catch-up chase with a three goal margin the first leg of the Last 16, they had to wait until the final second of the re-match. But then Rafael Baena secured qualification with his goal taking the score to 25:27. Again their home ground strength was decisive, like before for qualifying for the Last 16 ahead of Montpellier. In the Group Stage Leon beat Kobenhavn and Montpellier in their lion s den and took a draw against Kiel thanks to a last second goal. After Round 8 their qualification for the knock-out stage was known. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: Third placed in Spain Qualification for the Last 16: Third placed in Group D Qualification for the Quarterfinals: 31:28, 25:27 against MKB Veszprem Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 10 Quarter-Final (3): 1997/1998, 1999/2000, 2001/2002 Last 16 (3): 2003/2004, 2005/2006, 2009/2010 Main Round (2): 2007/2008, 2008/2009 Qualification (1): 2010/2011 Spanish champion: 2001 Spanish Cup winner: Asobal Cup 1998, 2008, Copa del Rey 2003 Coach: Isidoro Martinez (since 2011) Key Players: Martin Stranovsky, Venio Losert

Team Profile - AG Kobenhavn (DEN) Road to the Quarter-Finals Thanks to their internationally experienced top class players AG Kobenhavn made a big impact as debutants, reaching the Quarter-finals with only two defeats in twelve matches until now. The Danes were fighting for the victory in the Group Stage from the first round of matches losing only to Leon and Kiel away. Due to a thrilling draw against Kiel in the final Group Match they finished second. For the Last 16 their wish came true to have an all-scandinavian duel with the Swedish champions Sävehof. This encounter was already decided after the away game in Sweden and a clear 34:24 victory, the re-match was nothing more than a duty to win. But the targets in Kobenhavn are high with qualification through to Cologne the aim. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: Danish Champion Qualification for the Last 16: second placed in Group D Qualification for the Quarterfinals: 34:25, 26:24 against Sävehof IK Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 1 Danish champion: 2011 Danish Cup winner: 2011 Coach: Magnus Andersson, since 2011 Key Players: Mikkel Hansen, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson

Team Profile - Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb (CRO) Road to the Quarter-Finals The Croats had to struggle hard to reach the Quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League for the tenth time. 110 of 120 minutes of the Last 16 games against Skopje were equal, and it was only in the final stage of the re-match the bigger international experience decided the encounter. In the Group Stage RK Zagreb had no problems finishing behind Barcelona with 16 points, which included a surprising victory at the home of the defending champions. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: Croatian Champion Qualification for Last 16: second placed in Group A Qualification for Quarterfinals: 18:19, 26:21 against Metalurg Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 18 Final (4): 1994/1995, 1996/1997, 1997/1998, 1998/1999 Semi-Final (1): 1999/2000 Quarter-Final (4): 2000/2001, 2002/2003, 2003/2004, 2008/2009 Last 16 (3): 2005/2006, 2009/2010, 2010/2011 Main Round (1): 2007/2008 Group Phase (3): 1993/1994, 2004/2005, 2006/2007 Croatian champion: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 Croatian Cup winner: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 Coach: Slavko Goluza, since 16 April 2012 Key Players: Marko Kopljar, Ivano Balic

Team Profile - RK Cimos Koper (SLO) Road to the Quarter-Finals A final goal from their top scorer Matjaz Brumen in the second leg of the Last 16 made the dream of RK Cimos Koper come true. Thanks to this, the Slovenian champions qualified for the first time ever in the club s history for the quarter-finals of the VELUX EHF Champions League in the closest of all encounters against Vive Targi Kielce from Poland with a one goal difference. In Kielce, the Adriatic team was equal, but at home they were close to failure, but ultimately secured the two-goal victory they needed to proceed. Before, the current EHF Challenge Cup holders qualified early for the Last 16 ranked second in their group below HSV Hamburg. Koper showed strength at home, winning all their matches against lower placed teams before entering the Last 16, and even taking a draw at Hamburg, but after drawing at home against HC Metalurg they needed help from Hamburg in the final round and the Germans won at Skopje. Qualification for the VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12: Slovenian Champion Qualification for Last 16: second placed in Group C Qualification for the Quarterfinals: 26:27, 25:23 against Kielce Club Information VELUX EHF Champions League records: Participations (including 2011/2012 season): 2 Group Phase (1): 2008/2009 Slovenian champion: 2011 Slovenian Cup winner: 2008, 2009, 2011 Coach: Fredi Radojkovic, since November 2009 Key Players: Milorad Krivokapic, Matjaz Brumen

Jernemyr: Playing, not talking FC Barcelona Intersport's Swedish defence specialist expects two open matches against Kobenhavn. Two metres tall, and more than 100kgs of pure power ideal requirements for a defence colossus: Magnus Jernemyr is the rock of the FC Barcelona Intersport wall. The 35-year-old Swedish international is one of the best defensive players in the world. Since 2008 Jernemyr has worn the shirt of the VELUX EHF Champions League record title winner and he lifted the trophy in 2011 in Cologne after losing in the VELUX EHF FINAL4 one year before. The "Scandinavian hulk" expects tough clashes in the current quarter-finals of the VELUX EHF Champions League, when the defending champions will face AG Kobenhavn. But Jernemyr, who had started his career at Redsbergslids in Gothenborg before changing to Danish side GOG, is confident of reaching the finals in Cologne again. ehfcl.com: On the Easter weekend you qualified for the Olympics with the Swedish national team, then you played domestic matches for FC Barcelona Intersport, now the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finals are ahead. Is it hard to switch from team to team and competition to competition? Magnus Jernemyr: No, it is not so difficult, only switching from club to national team is sometimes a problem. But I gained self confidence by qualifying for the Olympics, after Sweden played a weak EHF EURO in Serbia. I hope for a boost of confidence for the rest of the season by qualifying for the Olympics. ehfcl.com: What was your first reaction after the draw, when you knew that FC Barcelona Intersport will have to face AGK in the quarter-finals? Magnus Jernemyr: We do not care about the opponents, as we are used to big names. Two years ago we had to compete with MKB Veszprem in the quarter finals, last season it was THW Kiel. If you want to win a trophy, you have to beat all opponents. And if you beat tough opponents in the quarter-finals, you will not meet them again in semis or the finals. We have a good team, we are confident, so we say OK to this draw.

ehfcl.com: Is playing the home match in a football stadium a big advantage for AG Kobenhavn? Magnus Jernemyr: I know that they expect a large number of spectators, but again I mention the past: In 2011 we have beaten Kiel in Kiel, attended by 10,250 frenetic spectators, so I believe there is no big difference to be expected on Friday. We do not care about the number of spectators, as it is still a handball match with two teams, seven players each and two goals. ehfcl.com: Are defending champions FC Barcelona Intersport the favourites in those quarter-finals? Magnus Jernemyr: AG Kobenhavn have shown some great performances in a tough group, so I expect two open matches. It is to our advantage that we have played many more crucial matches like those and have more international experience as a team. Looking at the players, AGK have a big number of international experienced players too, like Kasper Hvidt or Joachim Boldsen, two former Barca players. But in my opinion FC Barcelona Intersport as defending champions are favourites more than AGK. ehfcl.com: Is it something special for you to face Swedish players in international matches, like you will face Niklas Egberg for example in the games against AGK? Magnus Jernemyr: No, since I had a big number of matches against Swedish players, there is nothing special. ehfcl.com: What does AG Kobenhavn mean for Scandinavian handball? Magnus Jernemyr: They have a top selection of Scandinavian handball players and so they are already number one in Scandinavia. ehfcl.com: AGK players and officials are very confident of eliminating Barcelona in the quarter-finals, saying "Unfortunately the defending champions will not reach Cologne again". What is your opinion? Magnus Jernemyr: Those are typical Danish reactions. They talk a lot we do not talk so much, but we do our talking on the court.

Hats off for Koper! Madrid coach Talant Dushebajew talks to ehfcl.com Once he won the EHF Champions League as a player, three times he was victorious as a coach and now he is one step away from heading to Cologne again: Talant Dushebajew is continuing his successful coaching career with Atletico Madrid like he did with Ciudad Real before the re-naming. Before the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter final against Slovenian outfit RK Cimos Koper, he talks about the chances and his plans to prolong his contract in Madrid despite an offer from HSV Hamburg. ehfcl.com: Apart from THW Kiel and FC Barcelona Intersport, Atletico is currently the third most successful team of this VELUX EHF Champions League season. Did you expect this? Talant Dushebajew: It is nice to have those results, but it is the past so I do not care about them. I am only looking ahead to see what will come. We have lot of work ahead to reach Cologne again. ehfcl.com: But up to now your team played superbly... Talant Dushebajew: I am really satisfied with our performances in the Group Stage. When we played tough opponents we had no fear, although we did respect them. In the end we deserved to win the group. Losing the re-match in the Last 16 against Schaffhausen was troublesome, but given the nine goal difference from the first leg and the fact that some players were injured we could live with the defeat. Besides, Schaffhausen had a brilliant day! ehfcl.com: Schaffhausen is the past, Koper is ahead and Atletico Madrid cannot complain about the draw. Are the Slovenians your most desired opponent? Talant Dushebajew: It really could have been worse, as we are lucky not to face Zagreb or Kobenhavn. But you have to give 100 per cent against Koper, too, this will not be a walk in the park. We have a lot of respect for Cimos, especially after their Last 16 performances against Vive Targi Kielce. Koper is a surprisingly strong team with a lot of young talented players. Fair play to them - I did not expect them to be in the quarter finals. ehfcl.com: Despite the respect: Do you expect your team as the favourite? Talant Dushebajew: We have the little advantage that we have the second leg match on home ground, but the quarter finals take 120 minutes. Koper is strong in away matches, too, as shown in Kielce and Hamburg. So we have to be aware, as we want to return to Cologne.

ehfcl.com: Will the VELUX EHF FINAL4 be a Spanish-German encounter or will other clubs be able to reach the final destination of the VELUX EHF Champions League? Talant Dushebajew: Defending champions FC Barcelona Intersport have a tough clash ahead with the incredibly strong team from Kobenhavn, but in my opinion they are a narrow favourite as they have the second leg at home, same as THW Kiel against Zagreb, an opponent which they should be aware of. The fourth quarter final of Füchse Berlin with Reale Ademar Leon is very close - both have a 50:50 chance. So a Spanish-German VELUX EHF FINAL4 seems to be likely, but teams like Kobenhavn or Zagreb have the chance to surprise. ehfcl.com: If you eliminate Koper your team will have reached Cologne for the third straight time. In 2010 you missed the final, in 2011 you reached the final, but lost so this year you should win the title Talant Dushebajew: It sounds quite good, but I currently do not care about the VELUX EHF FINAL4. We have league matches and the VELUX EHF Champions League quarter finals ahead, so just wait and see what happens before calculating or predicting. ehfcl.com: Is there any team you consider as the big favourite for the VELUX EHF FINAL4 title this year? Talant Dushebajew: It is not that one big favourite, but I have three teams on my list: FC Barcelona Intersport is the first candidate then THW Kiel and Atletico Madrid equally. ehfcl.com: Your young Danish newcomer Nicolaj Markussen has made a huge step up this season. Did you expect him to have come so far already? Talant Dushebajew: I am satisfied, but there is still a lot of room for more improvement, as he has only reached per cent of his performance potential. He will develop even more it was good for his integration that he arrived when the atmosphere in the club was so good.

Heinevetter: Well-balanced and full of strength German goalkeeper expects an electric atmosphere in the first quarter final between Füchse Berlin and Ademar Leon. He has plenty of experience in lifting trophies, having won the EHF Cup with his former club SC Magdeburg, but now goalkeeper Silvio Heinevetter hopes to reach the final of the VELUX EHF Champions League. But before the VELUX EHF FINAL4, Heinevetter and Füchse Berlin have to deal with Spanish side Real Ademar Leon. Before the first leg in the "Leon s den" the German international talked to ehfcl.com about their chances, the audience and the current form of his team. ehfcl.com: Is this season proving to be the most exciting of your career? Silvio Heinevetter: Every season is exciting, thrilling and important. But currently you have to forget what has gone before and look ahead, as we have vitally important domestic and international games ahead of us. But of course it is exciting, especially when you fight for your club, for your spectators and your city to reach the next step in the VELUX EHF Champions League. ehfcl.com: Did you expect to get the chance to reach the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Füchse's first ever season in this major competition? Silvio Heinevetter: After the draw for the Group Stage we had to recognise that it would be very tough to reach the Last 16 facing opponents like Atletico Madrid, MKB Veszprem, Vive Targi Kielce or Chekhovskie Medvedi. So to proceed to the knockout stage was a great success, yet topped by eliminating HSV Hamburg in the Last 16. But the VELUX EHF FINAL4 is still a long way off, as those quarter finals with Reale Ademar Leon will be extremely tough. Both teams are very similar, and Leon is known to be a top contender on home ground. In my opinion the form on the day will prove decisive in both legs. Considering the first leg is at Leon we would appreciate a draw like a victory. ehfcl.com: What makes Füchse Berlin so strong this season? Silvio Heinevetter: The quality we show has not just happened this season; it has been coming for a while. Our team is well-balanced and one of our strengths is to have players coming from the bench, sometimes only for five to ten minutes, fitting exactly into the way we play, improving the team. We do not have a huge squad, but everything is balanced. And our defence is another key to our success.

ehfcl.com: A third-ranked Spanish team face a third-ranked German team which league is stronger in your opinion? Silvio Heinevetter: German Bundesliga is far better, despite the top teams from the Asobal League having big names like Barcelona, Madrid, Leon or Valladolid. The strength and depth of the Bundesliga is much stronger, in Spain one of the top four teams would never lose against a relegation battler as happened in Germany not only once..ehfcl.com: Is it hard for you and your team mates to switch from the Bundesliga to VELUX EHF Champions League? Silvio Heinevetter: We just lost at Flensburg, and another domestic match is waiting before the clash in Leon. We can take motivation from those big games, but we should not have another lapse as this could cause a real black shadow on the whole season. ehfcl.com: How much respect do you have for the "Leon s den"? Silvio Heinevetter: This arena is exceptional, the spectators are very vociferous and we expect an electric atmosphere so we have respect, but will try to focus on our performance, not on the audience. ehfcl.com: Your team won the away games at Veszprem and Hamburg does this prove that Berlin is strong enough to take the points at away games? Silvio Heinevetter: I hope that we can cope with all opponents even in away matches, but some matches like our Bundesliga defeat against THW Kiel or the VELUX EHF Champions League defeat at Kielce have proven that we still have to improve. We have reached a certain level, but to be successful against top teams all players have to give top performances, so our chances at Leon are 50:50. ehfcl.com: How important is the support of your fans in the re-match? Silvio Heinevetter: We hope for a sell-out, tickets are selling like never before for one of our matches. Nobody wants to miss out on the quarter final of the VELUX EHF Champions League and thanks to our victories against Hamburg we have the advantage of a re-match on home soil. To have an enthusiastic audience is essential in such crucial games.

ehfcl.com: What does it mean to have Spanish player Iker Romero in your squad for giving advice about Leon? Silvio Heinevetter: Iker played in Leon, so his knowledge of the Spanish league and Ademar is huge. But we all know the players and the team from international encounters, nothing is secret. But in any case Iker is an important player for us on the field, especially in decisive games; we hope that he can give the main points. ehfcl.om: Do you expect a Spanish-German quartet at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne? Silvio Heinevetter: We have no influence on the draw, and our primary thought was about our own fate. In my opinion Atletico Madrid and THW Kiel are clear favourites in their quarter finals. AG Kobenhavn have a chance against FC Barcelona Intersport.

Stranovsky dreaming of a five goal victory Leon s Slovakian winger hopes for big games against Berlin and counts on the spectators in the Leon s den. It is the highlight for him and his club: Reale Ademar Leon have the chance to reach the VELUX EHF FINAL4 for the first time ever. And Slovak wing player Martin Stranovsky is confident that his team can achieve that goal in the 50:50 quarter-final matches against Füchse Berlin. ehfcl.com: Berlin is calling are you happy that you do not have to compete with another Spanish team like Barcelona or Madrid? Martin Stranovsky: We are all very happy with the quarter-final draw. Until now we have only ever had bad luck in European Cup draws, but this time we were lucky and I think Füchse cannot complain either. From our point of view we were drawn against the weakest of the strongest teams. We intend to use this at least in the home match and go for the win, but it will still be a very difficult task. Berlin is fighting for second place in the Bundesliga, that speaks for itself. Even at the recent tournament in Norway our new national coach Peter Dávid from Grosswallstadt warned me about the strengths of Foxes. ehfcl.com: How do you rate the Füchse compared with Ademar? Martin Stranovsky: Once again, we know they are very strong, but we believe in ourselves as well. I rate it as a 50:50 chance for both teams. This season we have proven that we can play against any opponent in the world and we will fight for our chance. You never know, maybe the same scenario as against Veszprem will repeat again. In my eyes to take part at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 tournament means much more than to win the Spanish title. ehfcl.com: Comparing the two leading leagues in Europe is Asobal stronger than the Bundesliga? Martin Stranovsky: These competitions are not on the same or similar level. Not anymore. The German Bundesliga definitely has more quality than Asobal. And I fear our Asobal has just fallen to the third place in the rankings behind the French League which has been growing in recent years, and their clubs have more money than in Spain. We can see what is happening in Asobal, former European champions from Pamplona are struggling and even our club has been cash-strapped from the last season. The players are not paid properly on a regular basis and the club owes us money.

ehfcl.com: Both teams eliminated big names Hamburg and Veszprem in the Last 16, did you expect those results? Martin Stranovsky: Both results were surprising, but I wouldn t call them sensations. In our case we were really happy with the victory in the first match and it provided us with some more confidence before the second leg in Hungary. We knew we needed to cover their back players who had scored roughly 10 goals from long range in Leon. We succeeded, and that showed in the final score as well." ehfcl.com: Leon can reach the semi-final of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time in the club s history. Is this a special motivation? Martin Stranovsky: No doubt, this is a special motivation for any player. All our players work together, and are totally determined, even with the club s financial problems. ehfcl.com: Is the special strength of Ademar being so successful at home, as you are still unbeaten in your Leon s den in this VELUX EHF Champions League season? Martin Stranovsky: We have to give credit to our spectators for our successful string of home matches. But we have not played much worse away in the VELUX EHF Champions League, obviously, not counting the match in Kiel. I think it is in our heads and it is much easier to motivate for the European competition with full stands than for the league match with one thousand spectators only sitting and watching, as is often seen in Spain. ehfcl.com: What is your dream result for the first leg? Martin Stranovsky: I would love to say a five-goal win. I know the goal difference is very important, but personally, I would be happy with any win. ehfcl.com: In your opinion, how many Spanish teams will make it to Cologne? Martin Stranovsky: There is no question about Atletico, they will make their way to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 for sure. I am pretty convinced Barcelona will manage to eliminate Kobenhavn. And it would be very interesting to see three Spanish teams in Cologne, wouldn t it?

ehfcl.com: Do you feel something special with just a few weeks to go before your dream transfer to Barca will be realised? Martin Stranovsky: I am not nervous because of that, but I keep realizing my time in Leon is running out and it will not be easy since I have spent seven beautiful years here and it has been like a home for me. But in a month and a half I am moving. I am going to have a busy summer, I have to find a flat in Barcelona, but my friends told me it should not be a problem because of the property crisis in Spain. Their shock 30:29 defeat by Macedonians Vardar Skopje in the regional SEHA League semi-final resulted in the sacking of coach Ivica Obrvan last week. But although Zagreb will start as underdogs in the two-leg tie against the 2007 and 2010 Champions League winners, Horvat is confident the Croatian title holders can return to winning ways and defy the odds to reach next month s VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. Horvat, who is the VELUX EHF Champions League top scorer with 80 goals, also has a personal motive to advance into the season-ending showpiece event in order to claim the elusive honour which only a handful of handball greats have won down the years. "It would be nice to be the top scorer in the VELUX EHF Champions League, but in order to do that we have to reach the FINAL4 because Mikkel Hansen and Kiril Lazarov are breathing down my neck and they could have an extra two games to beat me if we don t qualify," Horvat said. "Of course, team success is more important and my first priority is for Zagreb to beat Kiel although that will be a mountain to climb. The fact that I am in the driving seat is down to unselfish play from my team mates, who are always looking to pass the ball to me in fast breaks. Our style of play suits me and they deserve the lion s share of the credit," added Horvat. AG Kobenhavn s Hansen, who is second with 79 goals, will have an equally daunting task as his team take on holders Barcelona while Atletico Madrid s Macedonian sharpshooter Lazarov (74 goals) could be the favourite to emerge as the winner in the home straight. Atletico are up against Slovenian upstarts Cimos Koper and Lazarov, who was the EHF EURO 2012 top scorer after enjoying an outstanding individual tournament, will in all likelihood have another four games to add more goals to his Champions League tally as he, Hansen and Horvat aim to break Nenad Perunicic s seemingly untouchable record of 122 goals in a single season.

With the clash against Kiel beckoning, Horvat gave his account of a turbulent weekend at Zagreb which saw Obrvan dismissed to make way for his former team mate and Croatia national team coach Slavko Goluza. "It was definitely the worst possible time to have a dip in form which forced that decision but there is nothing we can do about in now," said Horvat. "We have to look forward to the upcoming challenge and Goluza s arrival should reinvigorate things so that we can produce our best handball against Kiel. Even that might not be enough to knock them out because in my opinion they are the best team in the competition. They have all the top backcourt players one could ask for, but each and every player in their roster is a constant threat because they operate like a well-oiled machine. They are not unstoppable though and apart from a trademark tough defence, our strength is also the fact that all the pressure is on them. We have a similar style of play so we have to try to beat them at their own game based on lots of fast breaks and easy goals," Horvat pointed out. The speedy winger, who won the EHF EURO 2012 bronze medal with Croatia, also looked ahead to the upcoming Olympic Games where the 1996 and 2004 winners will be aiming for their third gold medal. "It will be the strongest field ever in the Olympics so any podium finish will be a feat but we are definitely up for it. Seven or eight teams are thinking the same way though so it should be a fiercely competitive tournament," Horvat stressed. TEXT: Zoran Milosavljevic

Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb: Obrvan sacked, Goluza takes over Croatian coach and former team-mate Goluza takes over. Croatian national team coach Slavko Goluza has taken over in a caretaker role at the country s champions and VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finalists Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb until the end of the season after Ivica Obrvan was sacked on Monday (16 April), following the team s 30:29 defeat by Macedonian rivals Vardar Skopje in their SEHA League semi-final at the weekend. Goluza, who steered Croatia to the bronze medal at EHF EURO 2012 in January and who is aiming for a podium finish at the London 2012 Olympics will jump into the hot seat only a few days before the crucial VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-final first leg tie with German giants THW Kiel on Saturday 21 April. Goluza and Obrvan were team mates at RK Badel Zagreb for many years, including the EHF Champions League Final matches in the 1994/95 season, when the Croats lost against FC Barcelona. With the winners of the two-leg tie progressing through to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne at the end of May, Goluza faces the tough task of defying the odds to eliminate one of the strongest teams in the VELUX EHF Champions League, who won Europe s premier club competition in 2007 and Wednesday s (18 April) Croatian league match with NEXE will be Goluza s dress rehearsal for the first leg against Kiel which is set to draw a capacity crowd in the Croatian capital. They called me to help out and we took no time to reach agreement, Goluza told the Croatian media after he was unveiled as Zagreb s caretaker coach. I saw good and bad things in the team s last two games and we will do what we can to eliminate the weaknesses before the match with NEXE, he added. Obrvan was confident he would keep his job after Zagreb s 31:29 win over Slovakia s Tatran Presov in the third-place SEHA League play-off but the defeat by Vardar, who won the SEHA League with a 21:18 defeat of city rivals Metalurg Skopje in the final, cost him dearly. Finishing third in the SEHA League is the kind of failure that also inflicted financial losses so we had no choice but to make a tough decision, Zagreb director Josip Guberina said, adding that the players too would be fined for a lacklustre performance against Vardar. Instead of the perfect interlude they expected for the clash with Kiel, Zagreb failed to live up to expectations in the SEHA League after finishing top in the regular season and will now have to dig deep into their resources if they are to stand any chance against Kiel.

Vardar Skopje emerged as the unlikely winners of the regional SEHA League, incorporating teams from the former Yugoslavia and Slovakian side Tatran Presov, when they fought back to beat city rivals Metalurg 21:18 in a thrilling final in the Zagreb Arena last weekend. Speaking to the Croatian media at the time his team were knocked out Obrvan was adamant that he would not be stepping down. Vardar spoiled our plans to win the SEHA League and thus set the tone for the clash with Kiel but one poor game should not overshadow what has otherwise been a very good season, he said. I see no reason why I should step down but it s up to the club s board to decide at the end of the season. TEXT: Zoran Milosavljevic

VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12 - Last 16 Review Five nations represented in the Quarter-finals Two debutants and a lot of well-known faces reach the next stage Two debutants and all the EHF Champions League winners since 2005 are part of the Quarter-finals of the VELUX EHF Champions League this season. Three teams from Spain (defending champions FC Barcelona Intersport as well as Atletico Madrid and Reale Ademar Leon), two German clubs (THW Kiel and Füchse Berlin) and one team from Denmark (AG Kobenhavn), Slovenia (RK Cimos Koper) and Croatia (RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb) have made their way past the Last 16. Compared to the 2010/11 VELUX EHF Champions League quarter-finals only three of the eight teams are in the pots for the draw again: Kiel, Barcelona and Madrid (formerly known as Ciudad Real). In the Last 16 big names such as HSV Hamburg, MKB Veszprem and Montpellier Agglomeration failed on their way to the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in Cologne (26/27 May). In contrast, two VELUX EHF Champions League debutants will fight for their ticket to Cologne: AG Kobenhavn and Füchse Berlin. RK Cimos Koper have also never been part of the EHF Champions League Quarter-finals before. With the exception of Hamburg all three winners of the Group Stage (Barcelona, Kiel, Madrid) have made their way to the next stage, whilst Berlin is the only fourth ranked club among those eight teams after winning the all-german duel against HSV. Additionally three second ranked teams (Kobenhavn, Koper and Zagreb) have qualified, the only team ranked third after the Group Stage among those teams is Ademar Leon after eliminating Veszprem with a last minute goal.

VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12 - Last 16 Summary HSV Hamburg (GER) vs. Füchse Berlin (GER) 30:32, 23:24 Newcomer Füchse Berlin was the well-deserved winner of the only Last 16 duel made up of two teams from the same league. The whole 120 minutes were played at an equal level, but because Berlin scored two last-minute goals in the first leg their hopes were high in Hamburg. Though HSV led the second leg at the beginning with a five goal margin, Füchse fought hard and eliminated Hamburg with a second victory. For HSV it was the first failure in the Last 16 in their VELUX EHF Champions League history after reaching a minimum of the quarter-finals in the previous four years. Atletico Madrid () vs. Kadetten Schaffhausen (SUI) 36:27, 26:30 Everything was decided after the first leg in Schaffhausen, where the three times EHF Champions League Atletico Madrid winner played an outstanding match. But despite knowing their elimination, Kadetten fought brilliantly in Madrid, sensationally winning the second-leg after being in lead with seven goals. FC Barcelona Intersport () vs. Montpellier Agglomeration (FRA) 28:30, 36:20 The clash of the giants ended with a fiasco for the French champions: Since 1999 (20:37 at Leon) Montpellier have not lost a match with such a large number of goals. In the second leg, Barcelona overran Karabatic & Co. with their counter attacks, and thanks to their great defence. In the first leg Montpellier dominated the first half (17:11) and were hoping for a big sensation. In the end the 30:28 win in the first leg was not enough, also to compensate for the severe knee injury of Vid Kavticnik in the first leg. MKB Veszprem (HUN) vs. Reale Ademar Leon () 28:31, 27:25 For the fourth straight time MKB Veszprem were eliminated by a Spanish team in the knock-out stage of the VELUX EHF Champions League but never before was it as close as this time. A last minute goal from Rafael Baena earned the quarter-final berth for Reale Ademar Leon for the first time in ten years, and for the fourth time in total. Both matches were neck and neck and Leon were able to capitalise on a weak Veszprem period in the final stage of the first leg to take a three goals advantage to Hungary. Five minutes before the end, Veszprem had reached the three goal lead they needed to proceed, but then Rafael Baena shattered their hopes.

VELUX EHF Champions League 2011/12 - Last 16 Summary RK Cimos Koper (SLO) vs. KS Vive Targi Kielce (POL) 26:27, 25:23 Matjaz Brumen answered the question, as to which teams would qualify for the quarter-finals of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time ever in their club s history. His eighth goal for Cimos Koper decided the second match, which the Slovenians needed to win with an at least a two goal difference. Koper had already been better most of the time in the first leg, but a strong catch-up chase secured a victory for the Polish runners-up, which put them in pole position in Koper, even leading with three goals in the middle of the second half. But thanks to Brumen s goal, the 2011 Challenge Cup winners have made their way to the quarter-finals. RK Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb (CRO) vs. RK Metalurg (MKD) 18:19, 26:21 A tough clash and typical Balkan duel full of defensive tactics on both sides ended with the elimination of Lino Cervar s side at his former club, Zagreb. Cervar s team from Skopje played at the same level as the internationally more experienced Croats for more than 90 per cent of the Last 16, but in the end Zagreb were clever enough to secure their tenth participation in an EHF Champions League quarter-final. The first leg was marked by the great saves of Metalurg s Serbian goalkeeper Darko Stanic, and in the second leg, too, both defences were key to the game. Only in the last ten minutes of the second leg, were Zagreb able to outdistance their Macedonian opponents. AG Kobenhavn (DEN) vs. IK Sävehof (SWE) 34:25, 26:24 An easy walk in the park for the Danish debutants: After their nine goal victory in Sweden AGK they were already nearly through - and even a less dominant performance in the second leg could not endanger the biggest success in club history for Kobenhavn. Sävehof took the chance to improve and gain a closer defeat in Denmark. THW Kiel (GER) vs. Orlen Wisla Plock (POL) 36:24, 27:24 Like AGK and Berlin, THW Kiel were the third Last 16 participant to win both encounters - and it took the Germans only five days to march through to the Quarterfinals. After playing an absolute brilliant second half at Plock everything was settled for the 14th participation in the round of the last eight teams in the EHF Champions League. Plock were without a chance, though they recorded a better result in Kiel than at home.

About the VELUX EHF FINAL4 The VELUX EHF FINAL4 is the culmination of the European club handball season. The two-day event sees four matches in one venue to decide the winners of the VELUX EHF Champions League title. Introduced in the 2009/10 season and to be played until at least 2014 in the LANXESS arena, Cologne, the decision to create a new format for the final phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League was seen as crucial for the growth of handball across Europe. The aim was to create a flagship event, one that could compete on the international sports market and make the Europe s leading club competition even more attractive to fans, partners and sponsors. The success of the first two editions of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 showed that this new format was the right strategy. It has set new standards in organisation and entertainment: it is not just four games played over two days but a true entertainment event. The engagement of a top international act such as EUROPE is a sign too of the direction the event is taking. Almost 20,000 people from 30 countries will travel to Cologne in May 2012 for the third edition of the event. In 2011, tickets were sold out weeks before the four participating teams were known, and the total number of 19,750 spectators was a new record in European club competitions. This year, the organisers are facing even an increase in ticket sales. 72 The VELUX EHF FINAL4 Countdown In addition to peak sporting performances, ticket holders can also look forward to other highlights during the event. A notable coup was landed in terms of entertainment as the legendary Swedish rock band EUROPE will be rocking the VELUX EHF FINAL4. The performance from them will be one of the highlights of a weekend of sporting excellence. Their top-selling single The Final Countdown forms part of almost every international sports event. Fans can look forward to hearing the band and their hits before the final, during the winners ceremony as well as during the official Players Night on Sunday. We are very enthusiastic about bringing EUROPE live to the LANXESS arena. Our aim is to rock the crowd and to present the world with a spectacular mix of entertainment and top-class handball, said Peter Vargo, Managing Director of EHF Marketing GmbH. Charity partner Deutsche Krebshilfe EHF Marketing GmbH has also announced a new partnership with Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Help), which is to be the new charity partner of the VELUX EHF FINAL4. The partnership will see the organisation of a VELUX EHF FINAL4 Charity Golf Tournament powered by adidas - on Friday 25 May 2012 in Cologne. Keen golfers will be able to buy tickets for the chance to play with Stefan Lövgren, the VELUX EHF FINAL4 Ambassador, and many more celebrities. EHFM expects to donate around 30,000 to Deutsche Krebshilfe and the fight against cancer. "Sports events such as the VELUX EHF FINAL4 with nearly 40,000 enthusiastic visitors over a weekend give Deutsche Krebshilfe the chance to reach a young audience with our prevention message. In addition, proceeds from a share of ticket sales, charity auction and golf tournament will help us to improve cancer care, said Gerd Nettekoven, General Manager of Deutsche Krebshilfe. LANXESS arena at the centre of European Handball With the decision that the VELUX EHF FINAL4 will remain in Cologne until at least 2014, the foundation stone has been laid for the further development of the event. And for this, the LANXESS arena provides the best infrastructure and facilities. The engagement of a top international act such as EUROPE is a sign too of the direction the EHF s flagship club event is taking. The future-oriented partnership up until 2014 allows us, together with the European Handball Federation, to develop the VELUX EHF FINAL4 to new heights. The aim for the next three years is to set new standards in indoor sports globally. The LANXESS arena is at the centre of European handball, said Stefan Löcher, CEO of ARENA Management GmbH.
