NCAA FBS OPPONENTS As a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) since 1986, Sam Houston State has faced NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) foes 27 times. The Bearkats have won three of those encounters, the third coming last year with a overtime victory at New Mexico. SHSU also defeated Louisiana-Lafayette in 1999 and Louisiana-Monroe in Five times the Kats have come within a touchdown of winning over an FBS opponent. Those games include losses of to Rice (1993), at Louisiana-Monroe (1996), at Houston (1987), 13-9 at Baylor (1990) and at UTEP (1990). All 27 contests with FBS foes have been on the road with the Kats playing in front of several huge crowds. The five largest crowds to see Sam Houston play football have been 88,913 at Texas (2006), 58,659 at Texas A&M (1997), 51,738 at Kansas (2008), 50,180 at Texas Tech (2005) and 42,821 at Baylor (2001). BAYLOR Baylor owns a 3-0 record against Sam Houston, defeating the Bearkats 13-9 in 1990, 27-6 in 2003 and 34-3 in The 2010 visit to Floyd Casey Stadium marked Willie Fritz s debut as SHSU head football coach. Inheriting a young team with only 33 returning lettermen, the Kats put on a strong defensive showing Robert Griffin III completed 19 of 36 passes for 242 yards and two TDs to lead the Bears offensive. From an SHSU point of view, the game is best remembered for a play in the fourth quarter. With 3:58 to go in the game, running back Timothy Flanders (who had been in camp only one week) dashed 31 yards around left end on his first carry as a Bearkat. Flanders went on to earn 2010 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year honors. He was Southland Conference Player of the Year after the 14-1 season in 2011 and now stands as SHSU s all-time leading rusher. The next week, Sam Houston lost to nationally-ranked Western Illinois But true freshman Brian Bell stepped in as the Bearkats starting quarterback the next week and, since the third game of the 2010 season, Sam Houston has rolled up a 21-4 record. 2 Sam Houston Football - Page 2 BEARKATS WINS IN SEASON OPENER Timothy Flanders rushed 15 times for 117 yards including TD runs of 40 and eight yards to lead Sam Houston to a 54-7 victory over Incarnate Word of San Antonio in the Bearkats season opener Saturday in Huntsville. Flanders became the all-time leading rusher in SHSU history thanks to the performance. His career total now stands at 2,709 yards, breaking the record of 2,688 yards set by Charles Harris in Backup running back Keshawn Hill ran for touchdowns of 11 and 27 yards. Chance Nelson added an 11-yards score on a pass from Brian Bell. The Sam Houston State defense limited Incarnate Word to 88 yards total offense and a negative 46 yards rushing. Both figures rank as the second best performances by a Bearkat defense. SHSU limited Stephen F. Austin to 86 total yards and negative 48 yards rushing in a 1990 victory. BEARKATS NO. 1 IN SPORTS NETWORK POLL Sam Houston opened the 2012 season ranked No. 1 in the Sports Network FCS national rankings. The Kats stood No. 2 last week behind defending NCAA Division I FCS national champion North Dakota State in the FCS Coaches National Poll. SAM HOUSTON PRESEASON SOUTHLAND PICK Sam Houston is the favorite to repeat as Southland Conference champions according to the 2012 preseason poll of the league s head coaches. The Bearkats 2011 Southland football championship was their fourth in the program s 25 years in the league. However, the first three were co-championships, making the 2011 title the Bearkats first undisputed league crown. LAST YEAR S 14-1 BEARKAT RECORD The Bearkats rolled up 14 consecutive wins to earn the program s first No. 1 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Division I national championship game in Frisco. North Dakota State defeated SHSU 17-6 in the finals before a sellout crowd of 22,000 at FC Dallas Stadium. Sam Houston was the only FCS team to go 11-0 through the regular season. The Kats chalked up a perfect 7-0 Southland mark, wins over five nationally-ranked FCS opponents and a victory over FBS Mountain West Conference member New Mexico. The No. 1 seed in the NCAA playoffs, Sam Houston knocked off No. 22 Stony Brook, No. 7 Montana State and No. 5 Montana in their march to the National Championship Game. PERFECT SEASONS AT BOWERS STADIUM The Kats went 9-0 at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium in 2012 to build their all-time record on their home turf to Sam Houston previously has posted perfect home records five times 1986 (6-0), 1987 (4-0), 1990 (4-0), 2001 (6-0) and 2004 (8-0). Sam Houston s current 11-game winning streak at Bowers (the Kats last home loss was to McNeese State in 2010) is the second longest in stadium history. 3 Sam Houston Football - Page 3 SEVEN ALL-AMERICANS Seven Bearkat players were named to at least one NCAA Division I FCS All-America squad this season -- Tim Flanders (6 selections); Darnell Taylor (5); Travis Watson (3); Dax Swanson and Chris Crockett (2 each) and Richard Sincere and J. T. Cleveland (1 each). All but Crockett and Watson return. BEARKAT OFFENSE The Sam Houston offense dominated the Southland Conference, out-scoring league opponents last year. The Kats led the league in rushing offense, scoring offense and pass efficiency and stand number two in the league in total offense. The Bearkats scored 30 or more points in 12 of their 15 games. NATIONALLY-RANKED DEFENSE The Bearkats rank No. 1 nationally in rushing defense and held 11 of their 15 opponents to double digit rushing totals. Only New Mexico, Stony Brook and Montana produced more than 300 yards total offense against the Kats PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE Eighteen Sam Houston players have been named to the 2012 preseason All-Southland squad voted upon by the league s coaches. Tim Flanders and Richard Sincere, the league s player of the year and offensive player of the year, respectively, along with Darnell Taylor, the reigning defensive player of the year, head the list. Other SHSU first-team selections include defensive linemen J.T. Cleveland, Andrew Weaver and Gary Lorance and defensive backs Taylor, Kenneth Jenkins and Daxton Swanson. Second team picks include tight end T. J. Jones, offensive lineman Matt Boyles, defensive lineman Preston Sanders, linebacker Darius Taylor, defensive backs Bookie Sneed and Robert Shaw and punter Matt Foster. Flanders, Sincere and Darnell Taylor both are on the preseason watch lists for the 2012 Walter Payton (offense) and Buch Buchanan (defense) awards. RUNNING BACK TIMOTHY FLANDERS Junior Timothy Flanders finished 7th in the 2011 Walter Payton Award voting and was named to five All-America squads. He led the Southland Conference in rushing and scoring. He stood No. 2 in the nation in scoring and No. 27 nationally in rushing. He was named as Southland Conference Player of the Year. 4 Sam Houston Football - Page 4 WILD BEARKAT RICHARD SINCERE Richard Sincere is the 2011 Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year. The sophomore from Galveston Ball is a wide receiver who also lines up behind center in the Wild Bearkat formation. In 2011, he rushed 129 times for 979 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 26 passes for 485 yards including a 77-yard touchdown strike on the opening play of the Lamar victory. Sincere s 160-yard rushing performance in the Montana State win marked his fifth100-yard rushing game of He begins his junior season ranked No. 12 in Bearkat career allpurpose yars (1,959). He is one of only 29 Bearkats to amass more than 1,000 career rushing yards (1,261). SOPHOMORE QUARTERBACK BRIAN BELL Since becoming SHSU s starting quarterback as a true freshman in the third game of the 2010 season, Brian Bell has led the Bearkats to a 19-4 record. An All-District quarterback at China Spring for his coach and father Mark Bell, Brian begins his junior season ranked No. 11 in SHSU career passing (3,450 yards), No. 7 in career TD passes (27) and No. 9 in career total offense yards (3,985). He was a second team All-Southland selection in 2011 and is the first team quarterback on the 2012 preseason all-league team. DEFENSIVE EXPERIENCE The 2012 defense features 12 players who have combined to make a total of 131 starts for Sam Houston. Six players have started at least 20 games including Darnell Taylor (34), Kenneth Jenkins (29), J. T. Cleveland (26) and Gary Lorance, Dax Swanson and Bookie Sneed (all 23). The Bearkat defense created 40 turnovers last year including 22 interceptions and 18 fumbles. A total of 144 points (19 touchdowns and three field goals) resulted because of the turnovers. Sam Houston s secondary has picked off at least three interceptions in five games (4 vs. SFA and 3 each vs. UTSA, Nicholls, Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana). The 22 interceptions in one season is a school record, breaking the mark of 20 set in DAX SWANSON TOPS SOUTHLAND INTERCEPTIONS Daxton Swanson ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division I FCS football and led the Southland Conference with eight interceptions last season. The Waco LaVega product was a third team All-America selection and a second team All-Southland selection. The eight interceptions tied a school season record set by Allen Boren in Swanson has returned the interceptions for 117 yards. Swanson intercepted two passes in 2010, bringing his career total to 10. Ronnie Choate ( ) holds the Kat career record with 13. BLOCK PARTY RETURNS A Bearkat tradition established by head coach Willie Fritz when he was an assistant at Sam Houston in the early 1990s returned in The SHSU Block Party produced six blocks last season. Lineman Preston Sanders accounted for three, blocking field goals against Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State and Montana State. Torrance Williams produced the first block of the season at McNeese State, blocking a punt from the McNeese 16-yard line that Robert Shaw recovered the ball in the end zone for six points. Will Henry knocked down an extra point attempt at Southeastern and Michael Buse blocked a punt in the national finals. The school record for blocks in one season is five by Trey Woods (1993) and DeJuan Davis (2002). 5 Sam Houston Football - Page 5 WILLIE FRITZ WINS AFCA COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz was named as American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division I FCS Coach of the Year, the Southland Conference Coach of the Year and American Football Monthly FCS Coach of the Year. A REMARKABLE SEASON IN 2011 On the way to Sam Houston State University s first appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship game, there was one question that came up in every interview of a Bearkat player. When did you realize that the 14-0 run to the finals was going to be such a special season? For All-Southland Conference quarterback Brian Bell, the moment came at a team meeting following the completion of the 2010 season. Just before Christmas break, Coach (Willie) Fritz brought us all in for a team meeting, the China Spring product recalled. He put three things up on the board. He wrote 6-5 and followed that with average. Then he wrote 8-3 good and finally 10-1 great. Coach said that 6-5, average, is what we were in He crossed out good and told us he thought we could go straight to great in Right at that moment, we thought he was a little crazy, but having the coaching staff show they believed in us and what we were capable of really helped us and our confidence. For Southland Conference Player of the Year Tim Flanders, the realization of the potential of the 2011 team came in spring training in March and April. Everyone came into spring camp more committed than ever before, the sophomore running back from Midwest City, Oklahoma, said. We had a very good camp and a great spring game. Once we got the winning streak going in the fall, we just kept building momentum. Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year Darnell Taylor points to Sam Houston s overtime victory at New Mexico in the third game of the 2011 season. We didn t play as well defensively in that game, but when we beat an FBS team on the road in Albuquerque, we knew we had a chance to win every game, the junior safety from Mesquite said. Another milestone victory for the Bearkats was the win over No. 24 McNeese State in midseason. The victory marked only the second time Sam Houston had beaten McNeese at Cowboy Stadium. One of the big things our coaches emphasized all year is focusing on going 1-0 each week, Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year Richard Sincere said. That s what we did. We were 1-0 each week for 14 straight weeks. Whenever the magic started, it is undeniable that there has ever been a season like 2011 in the 96-year history of Sam Houston State football. During the 14-1 season, Sam Houston earned its highest Football Championship Subdivision ranking ever, standing No. 1 in the FCS poll from November 20 to January 9. The Bearkats were the only squad out of 126 FCS teams to finish the regular season Sam Houston ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation in nine NCAA statistics categories, standing No. 1 in rushing defense, No. 2 in scoring defense and turnover margin and No. 3 in total defense. The 14 victories, the most ever in one season by the Bearkats, included a perfect 7-0 Southland Conference record as SHSU earned its first undisputed Southland football championship. Sam Houston posted wins over five nationally-ranked opponents and went 9-0 at home at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium, one of 26 school records set during the 2011 campaign. Seven Sam Houston players received All-America honors. Fifteen Bearkats earned All-Southland Conference honors with Flanders, Sincere and Taylor sweeping league honors as Player-of-the-Year, Offensive Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year, respectively. Flanders rushed for 1,644 yards and 22 TDs and was named to six All-America squads in Taylor led SHSU with 128 tackles and was selected All-America on five honor teams. Other All-America honorees included Sincere, offensive linemen Travis Watson and Chris Crockett, defensive back Dax Swanson and defensive lineman J. T. Cleveland. The Kats were tops in the classroom as well. Sam Houston led the Southland Conference with seven selections on the 2011 academic all-league squad. Watson, a senior political science major, was named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year and was a finalist for the National Football Coaches Association Scholar Athlete of the Year post-graduate scholarship award. Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz received football s top coaching honor as American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Coach of the Year. After directing the Kats to their best two-year record in 96 seasons of football (20-6), Fritz also was voted as Southland Conference, AFCA Regional and American Football Monthly Coach of the Year. The Bearkats Southland Conference championship and NCAA playoff victories over No. 22 Stony Brook, No. 7 Montana State and No. 5 Montana before capacity crowds at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium brought regional and national publicity to Sam Houston State University unlike any event before. Sam Houston was featured in four national telecasts on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3; newspaper features in USA Today, the Washington Post and major Texas dailies in Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth; national radio exposure on Sirus XM, Westwood One and Turner Communications and TV interviews in every major Texas market. SAM HOUSTON INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Sam Houston State University competes at the NCAA Division I level in 16 sports as a member of the Southland Conference and as an NCAA independent in women s bowling. SHSU is the only league member to win the Southland Conference Commissioner s Cup all-sports trophy three consecutive years (2005, 2006 and 2007). The Bearkats also won the Southland Men s All-Sports Cup in 2000 and The Bearkats have won 26 Southland team championships with 17 of those league trophies earned in the past decade. In addition, SHSU has won eight Southland post-season tournament titles. Sam Houston student-athletes have combined to produce a department grade point average (GPA) of 2.87 or above each of the last 11 consecutive semesters. That is a mark higher than the GPA of the university s overall student population.

6 HEAD COACH WILLIE FRITZ Pittsburgh State, 1983 Third season at Sam Houston Won 21, Lost 6 20th season as head coach Won 157, Lost 58, Tied 1 Willie Fritz has directed Sam Houston State to a 20-5 record in his two seasons as Bearkat head football coach. His 20 wins rank as Sam Houston s most victories in a two-year span. Fritz earned Southland Conference Coach of the Year and American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year honors after Sam Houston State ran off 14 consecutive victories to earn the Southland Conference championship and a berth in NCAA Division I National Championship game. The 14 victories stand as the most in one season in Sam Houston s 96 years of football. Combined with a pair of wins at the end of the 2010 schedule, the Bearkats 16-game winning streak is the longest in school history and was the longest current streak in FCS play going into the national championship final. Fritz, who has produced an overall record of 157 victories, 57 losses and one tied as a head coach, became the 14th head football coach at Sam Houston State University on December 18, In his two seasons, he has taken a program that went 5-6 the year before his hiring to a 14-1 mark, the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division I playoffs and a No. 2 final national ranking in Sam Houston s 14 victories included a perfect 7-0 Southland record to give the Bearkats their first undisputed Southland title. During his 30-year career, Fritz has been part of programs both as a head coach and an assistant that have rolled up an overall record of 240 wins, 84 losses and five ties. The record includes nine appearances in post-season play (bowl games or playoff appearances) and 10 conference titles. Fritz came to Huntsville from the University of Central Missouri were he ranked as the winningest coach in the Mules 113-year football history. Fritz rolled up a record in 13 seasons as Central Missouri head coach. In 11 of those seasons, Central Missouri posted winning records. He is the only Central Missouri head coach to produce eight consecutive seasons of seven or more wins. Fritz served as a graduate assistant for Bearkat squads that went 16-6 in and won the 1985 Gulf Star Conference championship He was the secondary and special teams coach for the Bearkats in 1991 and 1992, helping lead Sam Houston to a Southland Conference championship and starting a special teams success tradition that lasted more than a decade. The block party saw Kat special teams block 80 punts, field goals and extra points in the 14 seasons from 1991 to From 1993 to 1996, Fritz was head coach at Blinn College where turned around a program that had gone in its three previous seasons. In just a short time, he produced a record and two national junior college championships. For his efforts at Blinn, Fritz has been inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame. As head coach at Central Missouri, Fritz led the Mules to their first postseason berth in 32 years when they defeated Minnesota-Duluth in the 2001 Mineral Water Bowl. A year later, Central Missouri earned its first NCAA Division II playoff berth after winning the Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) championship. Fritz coached 152 All-MIAA performers including 41 first team selections and 24 All-Americans. Fritz ranks No. 15 among active NCAA Division II head coach in victories. In his 13 years at UCM, the Mules enjoyed an 84 percent graduation rate with three Academic All-Americans, 14 Academic All-Region and 144 MIAA Commissioner s Academic Honor Roll selections. Central Missouri ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II football attendance. Fritz was the second member of his family to coach at Central Missouri. His father, the late Harry Fritz, was the Mules head football coach in 1952 and Sam Houston Football - Page 6 later become executive director of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Fritz played college football at Pittsburg State University where he was a four-year starter as a defensive back and played on two conference championship teams. He was a student assistant coach for the Gorillas in Fritz served as an assistant football coach at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Kansas in 1983 and at Willis High School in Texas in 1986 and was defensive coordinator at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas from 1987 to Fritz and his wife Susan have three children, Wesley, Elaine and Brooke.
