2 FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone We are fast running into the Christmas break and for the Auckland Car Club side of things no more competition until we resume our summer series back at Hampton Downs. I have one more Clerk of the Course duty to fulfil for TACCOC at Hampton Downs in December and then that s it for me also and looking forward to a break. We have had a busy time of late both at the clubrooms and at the track and I ll start with the track first. Earlier this year in January we ran our first meeting at Taupo for many years but the date didn t seem to sit well with many with the event being poorly attended overall and the club suffered a rather large financial loss. According to a survey of competitors we carried out more than 75% wanted to include Taupo as part of the annual competition and so we arranged to return in November hoping it would suit more people. This time we had over 80 competitors, which was very pleasing, and the club went part way to covering costs and making up the losses from our first foray south. The club must thank the competitors and teams that made the long trek down and in particular ACJS, Production Race Series, Northern Muscle Cars and North Island Formula Ford. There were a few Racing Saloons and some circuit sprint cars also. The clubrooms were once again packed for our annual Roll of Honour ceremony earlier this month and we had many distinguished guests, inductees and club members show up for the occasion. Natalie has included some photos further along in the newsletter for your perusal. Congratulations to the recipients of these honour awards they are much deserved and the recognition for what you have done for motorsport is, in many cases, long overdue. Everyone enjoyed the occasion and many positive responses have been received. There are many avenues that can lead from being closely associated with the club and to name a few Race controller, Timing, Competitor relations officer, pit lane, dummy grid and flag marshal s or Clerk of the Course. Training is easily arranged and we will assist you. You will work with a fantastic team and I can guarantee you will make many new friends. 4 NORTH ISLAND FORMULA FORD Photo credits to StreetStyle Photography The first round of the North Island Formula Ford Series was held at Pukekohe as part of the Auckland Car Club Summer Series. Seven cars fronted for thus event. These include a couple of newcomers having their first run in the series, and in some cases, the first run in their respective cars. This included Callum Crawley (the current Formula First Champion) running Steve Gillard s Van Diemen RF92, Blake Evans (the current Formula First Winter Series Champion) in the ex Michael Scott Mygale, Alex Hawley in Kerry Ross Stealth and Jack Proctor in his RF85. They were joined by seasoned runners Dave Silverton, Jordan Mountfort and Noel Woodford. Unfortunately we lost Callum and Jack in qualifying due to a crash and engine issues respectively. Race 1 saw Alex lead Blake for most of the race. For both of the young guns it was their first race in Formula Ford. Dave kept them honest in coming home third. For Race 2 Alex was again on pole but Blake was coming to terms with the Mygale and pressured Alex to the end. Unfortunately Dave had an engine issue and would retire, allowing Jordan to take 3 rd place. Race 3 saw Blake really get the bit between his teeth passing Alex to take his first win. Jordan was once again 3 rd. Noel had been enjoying his first run in the NIFF Series Finishing all races and leaving the event leading Class 3. Jordan leads Class 2 and Alex leads the Series and Class 1. Our next round is at Taupo on Nov 18 th. 5 ROTARY RACING ENTHUSIASTS Round 2 Two Rounds of The New Zealand Rotary Racing Enthusiasts (NZRRE) 2018/19 calendar have now been completed. Disaster struck NZRRE debutant Elton Wichman at round one, as New Zealand Rotary Racing Enthusiasts embarked on their second season running with the Auckland Car Club. The weather was shocking, and Elton s newly finished FD RX7 lost it in the river crossing the pit straight at Hampton and hit the wall hard. Even before he had it on the trailer, Elton was talking about getting to round two. Sure enough Round two rolled around and the NZRRE crew were amazed to see a pristine red FD turn up in the pits ready to go! The effort Elton put into getting his car finished (albeit late the night before the race!!) epitomizes what NZRRE is all about. Round 2 was a cool yet sunny Saturday at Pukekohe. Apart from the two bumps, Round two went really well, with good results from all, particularly club president Julius Coffey and his RX3, who won the last two races outright. Round two results: 1. 7 ALL CLASSIC JAPANESE SERIES Round 2 ACC Summer Series Round 2 All Classic Japanese Series Report The second round of the series at Pukekohe saw a great turnout of 24 entries for the ACJS Series. Unfortunately this was reduced to 23 the night before when Scott Curtis had to withdraw due to finding bearing metal in his oil filter. It was good to see Rob Mullins back after his testing accident at Hampton Downs, Elton Wichman after his meeting with the wall during round 1, Mark Collier finally getting the car completed for the new season and Bryce Richards fixing his over-fuelling problem. Despite gloomy predictions for the weather, the day turned out fine and wet tyres stayed in the pits. Unfortunately qualifying was shortened by a red flag and several drivers didn t get a full flying lap in. The first race produced class wins for Shaun Midgen (Invitation), Bryce Richards (Group 1) and James Smith (Group 2), with Al Nicholls suffering a dnf from a mysterious misfire that he was unable to resolve on the day. The first handicap race saw Jared Holmes, who was gradually getting to grips with his newly turbocharged MX5, take out Group 1, Tim Hart Invitation and Brittany Sheweiry Group 2. The race as unfortunately marred by an accident to Taylor Hurst (MR2) who made hard contact with the wall coming up over the hill. The car suffered substantial damage but fortunately Taylor got away with just bruising. Elton Wichman s bad luck continued with a throttle linkage problem that ended his day. The last handicap race, which was shortened to six laps, gave class wins to Jared Holmes and Brittany Sheweiry again, with Clint Harvey taking out Group 1. 9 NORTHERN MUSCLE CARS Round 2 Round 2 Pukekohe Park Raceway (Saturday 13 th October) Weather was better than forecast with no rain but quite cold. We were, for this round combined with Racing saloons who also has some Historic Sports sedans included with them which certainly made the handicapping a challenge. A good turnout of cars with new members Paul Urquhart White XA Coupe, Warren Betts with a blue SLR 5000 Torana and Michael Bristow in a Perana Capri. It turned out very well for each of the new members with them all winning a race. In qualifying Michael B was fastest in the Perana with a time of 1:14.1 followed by Kayton, Calvin and the two Pauls, with the Urquhart being in front. We had a few casualties in qualifying Colin with a broken oil cooler in the Corvette, Michael Crawley with a fuel pump issue in the Commodore and unfortunately Dave in the Mustang with a smokey issue which proved to be terminal for the day. Warren also showing that Holdens could smoke nearly as well as Fords but managed to keep going for the rest of the day (almost). Race one pretty much went as per qualifying with Michael lowering his time by 1.5 seconds to 1:12.6 Calvin manged to get in front of Kayton then Lee and Paul (Pinky) the other Paul having a wild ride down the hill to lose his muffler causing a safety car. Race two was our usual handicap but due to the lack of speed from the Historic Sports Sedans all but 4 cars started from pit lane. New member Warren was first home following by Colin s big block Corvette and Chris Anderson s black JPS Mustang. Race three (with a little jigging of the handicapping) saw most cars start from the track rather than pit lane. Paul U was the winner followed by Ross in the Marlborough Commodore and then Michael C after a close battle with Pinky. The points are now Class A 1st Ross Golding, 2nd Calvin Andrew, 3rd Colin Schischka Class B 1st Michael Crawley, 2nd Paul Burnet, 3rd Greig Running Invitation 1st Lee Budd, 2nd Paul Urquhart

12 ROLL OF HONOUR & MEMBERS REUNION 2018 Part 1 INTRODUCING THE FIRST TEN AUCKLAND CAR CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR INDUCTEES OF 2018 Robbie Francevic is a legend in NZ motor racing having won multiple New Zealand and Australian saloon and touring car championships in a variety of cars. His career spans from the early allcomer racing days at the wheel of a Humber 80 then Anglia 105E and Custaxie through the long distance, production racing and Group A eras piloting Ford Zodiacs, Falcon GTHOs, Torana XUIs, Mazda RX2s, Valiant Chargers, Commodores, Volvo 240s and Sierra Cosworths. Robbie was also a top contender in Formula A and Formula Pacific single seaters, a truck racing GP winner and highly competent rally driver. Ivy Stephenson was for many years one of New Zealand motorsports most recognizable competitors throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Her specialty was in sports cars where she proved more than competitive in a Riley, Buckler DD1, Lola Climax and Lotus 23B. However, her abilities were not just limited to sports cars as she also featured prominently in long distance production car racing, trials and early Heatway rallies. Ivy is also a former winner of the Club s top all-round award the Exide Trophy. Gordon Southee has been a leading figure around Auckland Car Club circles for several decades firstly as a regular and successful rallies and trials competitor. However, he was also a long standing volunteer namely flag marshalling at Pukekohe and during the construction of the Clubrooms. It was often noted that most weekends, Gordon could be seen around the building with hammer and tools in hand eventually becoming the Clubrooms Custodian for over 20 years. Terry Malloy was one of the unsung heroes of the Auckland Car Club as he served various roles most notably as the Competition License officer for many years. Terry was also a long standing member of the Executive Committee and also competed in many club events such as trialing and club circuit racing.

13 Steve Emson commenced his racing career as a schoolboy and quickly established himself as a star of the future in both racing and rallying. Initially an exponent of production car racing his promotion to a highly modified Datsun 1200 Coupe saw him a leading championship contender competing against more mature and experienced drivers. His seamless conversion to Formula Pacific racing was exceptional until a serious accident interrupted his progress. During the racing offseason Steve was a regular and top competitor in rallying at the wheel of a rapid Datsun 1600SSS. Rob Wylie came into motorsport as a regular trials competitor and service crew member in the early days of the Heatway Rallies. Moving into rallying his own car was a smart move as he featured prominently in results and established himself as a man to watch. However, Rob also joined the Club s rally Committee and for many years became involved in plotting and organizing club events culminating in several years as Assistant Clerk of Course for the Rally of New Zealand. Rob was also a member of the Club s Executive Committee as well as a member Mike Marshall s rally team during the 1970s and still contests historic rallies. Reg Cook is another legend who as a driver and engineer fully justifies the term. Having entered the circuit racing scene driving Mini Coopers he quickly established himself as a man to beat, winning multiple touring car championships in a Mini Cooper, Escort RS1600, Datsun Cherry and Datsun Sunny. He was also a race winner in Formula A single seaters and a prominent works rally driver for Nissan which included several victories and a first New Zealander award for the Rally of New Zealand. Reg is still competing in motorsport holding world land speed records in cars of his own design.

14 Greg Horne was one of several who entered motorsport as a sponsor and moved into competition themselves. As the Manager of Engine Rebuilders Limited who were primary sponsors of Tony Teesdale s rallying campaigns, Greg began co-driving to replace Gary Smith who had retired and quickly established himself as more than competent in the job. The duo went on the win three New Zealand Rally Championships in three different makes of car until Tony retired. Greg then continued in motor sport as a sponsor of young drivers such as Nick Cassidy, Jason Richards and Tim Edgell together with rally drivers and the New Zealand V8 Touring Car Championship, all via his company BNT Automotive. Grant Morrison came into motorsport via his job with Rothmans who were sponsoring the Formula Pacific International Series and the New Zealand Rally Championship during the 1970s and 80s. He soon became hooked on rallying and filled many roles in Auckland Car Club rallies including course plotter, Assistant Clerk of Course and Head Clerk of Course together with his speciality in media relations. However, Grant s most significant contribution was as Chief Media Officer for the Rally of New Zealand for nearly 20 years. Paul Adams was a notable motorsport competitor for over 30 years. Having contested many club racing, hillclimbs and trials, he soon established himself as a driver to watch in rallying which culminated in his winning several events together with a New Zealand Rally Championship and victory in the Rally of New Zealand. Paul also enjoyed success in circuit racing particularly in long distance production car races. Over his career he drove a variety of cars including BMW 2002 Ti, Ford Escort RS1600 and 1800, Vauxhall Chevette 2300 HSR, Toyota Corolla and Mazda 323.

16 CLUB INFORMATION Regular Club Night The club rooms at 44 Stoddard Road, Mt Roskill, Auckland are open every Thursday night from 7:30pm until 10:30pm. License examiners are usually available to assist new Members with license exams. Several members of the Executive Committee are usually available to discuss any issues or provide assistance. Club Rooms Hire Rates The Members Lounge is available for hire for special events such as birthday or anniversary parties, meetings, bingo/housie, quiz nights, training courses, etc. The Members Lounge has a fully equipped bar and a small food preparation and serving area. Special hire rates are available for Club Members. Commercial organisations and community groups receive discounts for multiple events or long-term commitments.
