1 April 2014 O nce again it is time to put pen to paper and this month instead of the usual four page Newsletter, I have extended it to eight pages to keep members as up to date as possible. I will start this month by mentioning our own club forthcoming sporting events. Firstly the Autosolo at Carver Barracks, Debden, Nr Saffron Walden on 27 TH APRIL. This is the first round of the 2014 ANGLIAN MOTORSPORT CLUB AUTOSOLO CHALLENGE and Regulations are now available on the WSMC website. The event is a good introduction to Motorsport but remember that cars need to be roadworthy, taxed, mot d and insured. To qualify for the Autosolo, the vehicle must also be driven to the event. Other vehicles may be eligible for the Autotest event which runs in conjunction with the Autosolo. The minimum age for drivers is 16. As Chief Marshal for the event, I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can assist on the day. It is a good way of seeing what goes on if you are new to this type of event. Please contact me on or jaboot@btinternet.com Please note that if you are coming to this event you should enter the venue entrance at 154/ There is no rest as after the Autosolo, WSMC and ECMC will be organising the South Suffolk Classic run on SUNDAY 11 TH MAY. As you will see it is a new route this year and I am assured the Regulations will be available very soon. I believe the organisers are awaiting final authorisation of the route. The event will start at THE GRAFHAM WATER CENTRE, MARLOW PARK, GRAFHAM, PE28 0BH - MR 153/ My apologies for the inaccuracy in the previous issue, regarding the start venue. The event, as in previous years, will finish at The South Suffolk Show at Ampton, Bury St Edmunds The clubs will once again be displaying members competition cars on their Stand at the show. This event will also be run at Debden the Regulations are now available from the club WSMC website Another event worth drawing your attention to is the World Rallycross Championship Meeting at Lydden Hill on 24 th /25 th May. The latest news is that the double European Rallycross

2 Champion, Derek Tohill, has joined the LD Motorsport World RX team operated by Liam Doran. He will race a Citroen DS 3 in the supercar class. Barry Redmayne made the long journey down to Ebworth for Stroud & District MCs 36 th Ebworth Classic Trial. The sections look rather steep and this could be the reason why Barry was forced to retire the Marlin with fuel starvation. Hopefully a change to an electric pump will prove effective when Barry heads off for the Lands End Trial on 18 th April. Conrad and Izzy Bos have promised to write for the next issue of The Mag on their adventures on Chelmsford MC s TRS Targa Rally. This was the first round of the new Anglia Targa Challenge Series sponsored by Eco Living and Heating from Halesworth. Tony Hewitt, who is involved with the sponsorship, tells me he hopes to be out in his rally car later this year. The Sprint Championships are well under way. Green Belt and Harrow run the third event in a row at North Weald on the 20 th April but then it is a change of venue, as Borough 19 make the annual trip to Hethel on 4 th May for their Lotus Hethel Sprint. I have not yet heard from the two Keiths, Pettitt and Walladge who along with Brian Hemmings marshalled on The Flying Scotsman at the Merevale Hall test Nr Atherstone, Warwickshire on Friday, where they were due to run the finish of a 1.5 mile test. Matt Abrey had problems when a wheel rolled off his Ford Model A Special on the way to the start. Undeterred he was 3 rd in Class at the end of day 2. Robert Abrey was running with his Chalmers 10, the oldest car in the event. The latest results show SCCON s Georgina and Julian Riley holding 5 th in their class in the Riley Lynx Sprite 12/4. As I prepare this issue, WSMC members are competing on Falcon s Ivinghoe Trial, which is the final Round of the Anglia Motor Sport Club Trials Challenge. Let s hope it has been a successful day for them. Finally please continue to let me have any reports results or information on events. The sixth running of the successful SOUTH SUFFOLK CLASSIC, organised by West Suffolk Motor Club and Eastern Counties Motor Club will be on SUNDAY 11 TH MAY.

For the first time the event is included in the HISTORIC RALLY CAR REGISTER S series of Classic Tours and we are hoping to attract more participants as a result of this.

3 The sixth running of the successful SOUTH SUFFOLK CLASSIC, organised by West Suffolk Motor Club and Eastern Counties Motor Club will be on SUNDAY 11 TH MAY. Sunday 11 th May is National Mills Day and this will be the theme for the event. For the first time the event is included in the HISTORIC RALLY CAR REGISTER S series of Classic Tours and we are hoping to attract more participants as a result of this. To encourage entrants, we have moved the start west to THE GRAFHAM WATER CENTRE, Marlow Park, Grafham, PE28 0BH (MR 153/165682) There will be a short run out to the first checkpoint at Houghton Mill, a National Trust site between Huntingdon and St Ives. The mill situated on the Great Ouse was almost demolished but saved by local villagers and restored to working order. The mill should be working on the day. Also in the village of Houghton is a traditional village garage occupied by Beers and specializing in restoration of and race preparation of classic MGs. After leaving Houghton the route will meander through the picturesque countryside of Cambridge and West Suffolk. Euston Watermill will be the final checkpoint before participants travel the short leg before arriving at the South Suffolk Show at Ampton, near Bury St Edmunds, for the traditional parade in the Grand Ring with commentary and interviews. Total mileage will be around 100 and timing will be such that participants can decide whether to motor on and get to the show early, or take their time enjoying the sights and checkpoints. Joint organizers, Eastern Counties Motor Club and West Suffolk Motor Club will be displaying members competition cars, including Historic Rally Cars, on their stand at the Show.

4 WATTISFIELD TRIAL - SUNDAY 23 RD MARCH 34 Entries were received for the Club s second trial of the year with over 20+ coming from WSMC Robin Howard was Secretary of the Meeting for this event, with Keith Walladge acting as Clerk of the Course. I was not at the Trial, but I gather the rain stayed away until the end of the day. There are loads of photos of the event on the club website, courtesy of Digital Events, but the only one I received was of a marshal trying to blend in with the surroundings. I am sure Bryan recovered, but it just goes to show some of the perils the marshals face. Thank you to those marshals from WSMC, SCCON and Falcon who made the event possible. The results had an unusual look about them, particularly in Class 2. Both David Holmes and Christopher Pettitt retired early on I believe a rather adventurous approach to one section caused a water leak on Christopher s Saxo while David s Seicento also damaged something on the front. Barry Redmayne was back in the Liege which he was sharing with David Tydeman but his luck did not improve due to a damaged shock absorber. After 36 sections, it was Ben Cutting who took the Overall win in the little Micra based on Index of Performance. Richard Leggett took victory in Class 3 with the Fiat 500

5 Both Peter Hanman and Geoff Hodge finished on 17 points in Class 4 with the organisers eventually awarding the win to Peter. Simon Dockray led the way among the new WSMC members in Class 2 with the Citroen Saxo he was sharing with Jack. Equal on 82 points with Simon was Steven Hogg in the Peugeot 106 he was sharing with Alex Doyle. Paul Braddock and Dave Daniel both contested the two opening rounds of the Essex Extreme AEMC Sprint Championship at North Weald Paul took 4 th in Class A5 and 27 th O/A at the Borough 19 Round with Dave winning Class B11 and 9 th O/A with his Mitsubishi Evo. Two weeks later, it was the turn of 7 Oaks DMC. Paul again took 4 th in Class with the BMW Mini and 17 th O/A. Meanwhile, Dave swapped to his Porsche GT2 and won his Class. He tells me he was still struggling with the handling and could only finish 43 rd O/A.

6 MIDDLEWICK STAGES 2014 MOD WOODBRIDGE SUNDAY 11 TH MAY In aid of the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre and Isabel Hospice Organised by Middlesex County AC and Green Belt MC, the event is a qualifying round of the jelfmotorsport.com Ward Construction AEMC Stage Rally Championship and the Corbeau Seats UK ASEMC Stage Rally Championship and the Middlesex Challenge. Unfortunately this event clashes with our own South Suffolk Classic. However Dave Daniel will be waving the WSMC flag with Stuart Kingham. I have also received details of the Bickerton Skoda Hallamshire Stages which will be run at RAF Barkston Heath (North East of Grantham) on Sunday 4 th May. Visit for further details. Clare Rix and Rob Cook had entered the recent Flying Fortress Stages but an argument with a tree stump brought the car to a halt after 3 stages. Hopefully the damage will be repaired in time for the Plains Rally on 17 th May Keith Petttitt will no doubt be glad when he can put aside his organisers hat to compete on the ORC Canal Rally at the beginning of June, which is the first round of the Flanders International Rally Challenge. Henry Hardiment is also due to be out on the event. Henry entered the recent TRS Targa rally to give his new new co-driver some experience in the car.
