2 RC Electric Today s Events: RC Electric Free Flight DAY TWO of ALES started much the same as day one cool, calm, and cloudless. CD Rob Glover had an early pilots meeting and got us flying by 9 a.m. The first round was a battle of who could float the best in the early morning flat air. Even at this early time of the day, several people made their 10-minute flights. As the morning wore on and the air heated up, the fight was on. Marc Gellart and Bob Burson continued to post 10-minute maxes and high landing scores, with the rest of the field in hot pursuit breathing down their necks. As the day progressed, the dreaded ALES Day 2 Muncie air began to claim its victims. A turn to the wrong side of the field off launch proved a costly mistake for many pilots who paid dearly with short flight times. While some rounds had groups where all the pilots in the group reached their 10-minute max, there were other groups where the winner of the group was lucky to get 6 minutes. When the wind picked up, the air became even harder to pick, and the out of bounds cones became many pilots enemy. Marc and Bob matched each other, max for max, until the 11 th round. That is when this reporter (Ed) and Bob were the last two pilots up in their group, and were scratching for air at less than 100 feet. Ed managed to squeak out one more minute Ed Franz reporting. than Bob, ending Bob s run of perfect rounds. This gave Marc the point edge he needed to win the contest. The winners were: Marc Gellart, 1 st ; Bob Burson, 2 nd ; Kerry Cochrell, 3 rd ; Dan Myers, 4 th ; and Jack Iafret, 5 th. All in all, the two days of ALES at 2012 Electric Soaring Nats were a roaring success. Everyone who flew had a great time and enjoyed it immensely. An often heard comment was I ll be back next year! Tomorrow is the last day of Electric Soaring Nats and it winds down with the event, Class B LMR (Limited Motor Run). 7 Free Flight David Mills reporting. Free Flight Day 3 WE HAD another very fine day of weather and flying. Temperatures rose a little into the high 80s and the wind picked up a little, too, but conditions stayed within reasonable limits and drift was not a problem in a few cases. The winds were out of the south and southwest most of the day and only diverted occasionally out of the west to cause a few problems. Again, it was a wonderful day to fly Free Flight models under clear and cloudless skies. All the contestants had arrived by the morning and participation was up across the board. Mulvihill, as usual, proved popular and provided 21 fliers the only rubber-powered category of the day. Earl Griffith won a hardly contested victory with 1,200 seconds, followed by Ed Konefes (1,163), and Ed Hardin (1059). We had our usual full card of gas-powered events, with B NosGas leading the way with a whopping 22 fliers. Larry Davidson won with 1,080 seconds, and Keith Fulmer (939), and Bob Watson trailed some distance back with 600 seconds. Well done, Larry! B Gas had a solid field of 14 contestants and produced similar results with Gerald Brown winning by a wide margin with 1,200 seconds. Jim Bocckinfuso won second with 846 seconds and Guy Scott, third with 780 seconds. CD Classic gas drew a very respectable 11 fliers with Dan Berry coming out on top with 1,048 seconds, followed by Brad Bane with 883 seconds and Bob Hanford with 732 seconds. The ever-exciting Rise-Off-Water Gas event was won by Jim Kelly with 268 seconds. One Design Combo was won by Glenn Schneider with 436 seconds. The glider contestants got off to a serious start in the OT Catapult Glider category with 17 busy fliers. Bill Schlarb charged way out in front to a decisive victory with 430 seconds. Ralph Ray won second with 296 seconds and Stan Buddenbohm third with 273 seconds. F1H produced the most tightly bunched results of the day with Ken Bauer winning with 600 seconds, followed very closely by Bob Sifleet with 583 seconds and Kyle Jones with 580 seconds. The F1Q event put on its expected spectacular show, offering the ultimate in electric high-tech gadgetry and awesome power. Julie Parker, a past Nats winner in the category, reprised her victory going away with a score of 1,256 seconds. Rex Hinson took second with 1,208 seconds, and Dick Ivers, placed third with 1,157 seconds. The Jetex event draws a loyal following and Tuesday was no exception to its rocket-powered and pungent charms. Eight fliers flew and Jim Reuter, a past Nats winner, won again with 321 seconds. Bill Schlarb trailed closely for second with 317 seconds, with Bob Hanford, a little more so, for third with 195 seconds. Wednesday promises hotter temperatures, forecasted to go into the 90s. We knew perfection couldn t last forever. Fortunately, the winds promised to remain moderate and in the good directions. We hope so; fingers crossed. Wednesday will furnish plenty of action. The gas fliers will keep very busy today and do the C Gas, AB Classic Gas, A NosGas, Early 1 / 2 A Gas, F1P, and Cargo categories. That s a lot of internal combustion! The electric guys will fly the new-rules E-36, and we expect a lot of participation there. The FAI guys will fly F1B their big and majestic rubber-powered category. Nostalgia Rubber will draw many, too. Expect catapult glider to draw the most fliers tomorrow; it usually does! And perhaps, best of all, the Flying Aces action starts with a variety of categories, which continues until Friday. NN Bucky Servaites (OH) stands justly awed by his Nats-winning F1C power model. Readers should note that the wings unfolded at the end of the ballistic climb to produce an angelic glide!

8 Free Flight David Mills reporting. This year s Mulvihill winner, Earl Griffith (KS), completed a hard-fought victory against stiff competition. Bob Hanford and his Pilfered Pearl, good for third place in CD Classic. Two California amigos, Rocco Ferrario and Tim Batiuk, get in some glider practice. Gil Morris (OH) seems pleased with the awesome performance of his F1C good for third place. Norm Poti and his gorgeous F1C power model. It has spectacular climb and glide.

9 Free Flight David Mills reporting. Faust Parker s (TX) F1C at rest. Yes, Faust is from the Lone Star State. The gathered throng for the Beat-the-Vartanian tournament, a FF Nats tradition. Two old friends, Lee Hines (CA) and Kit Bays (NC). Where are their models? Jim Jennings Jr. (TN) and his vertical F1Q power model. F1Q gives awesome performance, roughly ¾ horsepower in this case. Gerald Brown (TX) waits for a thermal in B Gas. The waiting worked and was good for first place.
