4 SELECTION PROCEDURE The area to be served by a diffuser should be divided into equal squares and when possible these areas should not exceed twice the mounting height. It is not necessary to locate outlet in the center of discharge area, since 3 - way and 2 - way patterns can be used to compensate for other locations. 2 - way opposite patterns may be used for rectangular areas such as corridors. Before selecting the diffuser pattern and size for a conditioned space it will be necessary for the designer to obtain the following: 1 - CFM for each diffuser. 2 - Location of diffusers. 3 - Horizontal throw dimension and ceiling height. 4 - Type of occupancy. 5 - Type of ceiling, whether plaster, tile, T-bar, metal plan or acoustic plaster. The following is the suggested method for the selection of diffusers. 1. Determine the maximum CFM for entire area. The CFM to heat or cool on area is calculated in accordance with method outlined in section on Heating and Cooling Loads in ASHRAE Guide. 2. Tentatively select the diffuser design i.e., one way, two way, three way or four way blow. 3. From Table 1 (CFM-TD RATIOS) find the maximum allowable CFM per each side of the diffuser in accordance with ceiling height. 4. From the above information determine the total maximum CFM per diffuser. Divide this into the total CFM for entire area to indicate the approximate number of diffusers required. 5. Determine from type of occupancy the sound level desired from Table Wrth C.F.M. per diffuser and sound level established, select from performance table the diffusers that will satisfy these conditions and provide the throw required. It should be realized that NC. 30 is "very quite". If the background level is too low, discontinuous noises may not be "masked" and thus cause distraction. Recognizing this, many designers use the high end of the recommended range to establish the allowable criteria for air distribution outlets. 4
