1 WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION DIVISION: Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Studies (KHS) PROGRAM AREA: KHS COURSE: KHS 6540: Professional Sports Seminar COURSE CREDIT: 1 Credit Hour TERM/YEAR: Spring, 2014 COURSE LOCATION: 0160 MANO DATE: Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 TIME: Friday 9:00 am 5:00 pm and Saturday 9.00 am- 4:00 pm INSTRUCTOR: Jordan Field OFFICE HOURS: By appointment, scheduled via TELEPHONE: TBD COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the business strategies of a Major League Baseball team, including an in depth look at the importance of community affairs, business public relations, social media and player relations. Additional topics will include the strategy of in-game promotions / giveaway items and a discussion of the business side of Major League Baseball s 2012 Postseason. Course includes an exclusive tour of Comerica Park with a focus on the Detroit Tigers Executive Office, Corporate Sales ballpark inventory and special event planning. COURSE OUTCOMES: The goal of this workshop-style seminar is to provide students interested in the business of Professional Sports with behind-the-scenes access and practical insight that better prepares them to land an internship and launch a career in the front office of a Professional Sports Team. EVALUATION: 1) Attendance = 300 points for full attendance on both days, including on-time arrival in morning and after lunch break. Missing more than one hour total over the two-day seminar will result in a failing grade. 2) Active Participation = 400 points for taking an active role in the workshop, contributing in a productive manner during class discussions and group work. 3) Take-home Assignment / Informal in-class Presentation = 300 points for successfully applying strategies discussed on Friday in one (1) two-page take-home assignment and brief informal class presentation on Saturday morning. Not completing the take-home assignment / informal presentation will result on a failing grade. UNDERGRADUATE GRADING SCALE: A = % B- = 80-83% D+ = 67-69% A- = 90-93% C+ = 77-79% D = 64-66% B+ = 87-89% C = 74-76% D- = 60-63% B = 84-86% C- = 70-73% E = 61% or below GRADUATE GRADING: A % B % A % C % B % C 74-75% B 84-87% F <75% CLASS POLICIES: Students are expected to attend all day both days and to arrive on time. Students are expected to contribute in a respectful, productive manner in class discussions, group work and during Comerica Park tour. All assignments must be typed. Class may not be recorded. Cell phones must be turned off during class and using any electronic devise for a purpose unrelated to course work will be strictly prohibited. 2
