3 Overview What is BYC Baseball? Intramural and Tournament/Travel Chartered with Babe Ruth League, Inc. 4 Overview Where do we play? Gillespie Park, GVSD, Del Co fields When is baseball s season? Spring primary intramural season, some travel teams Summer tournament and travel teams Fall in-house and off-site leagues Winter Coaching sessions at an in-door facility (Maplezone) How can a child register and what s needed to play? Registration via the BYC website Bring a glove Cleats and a cup are recommended 4
5 Goals of the Program Positive experience for all players Safe environment Sportsmanship toward teammates, coaches, opponents, league officials, and fans Age appropriate play- Cal Ripken governed Players in the game as much as possible Learning environment clinics, practices, games Parity between intramural teams- drafts start at 8s (Minors) Opportunities to play travel and tournament teams at higher levels of competition 5
6 Parent Code of Conduct VIII. CODE OF CONDUCT: *Read the following information and check the box to indicate your agreement. Brandywine Youth Club Code of Conduct: Each spectator will ensure that his/her conduct is that of a lady or gentleman while observing the competition and after its conclusion. To satisfactorily meet these responsibilities, the spectator is expected to: Respect the rules of the game. Respect the game officials and refrain from questioning their decisions or from addressing them in a loud, disrespectful, or abusive manner. Cheer for their team in a positive, supportive manner, refraining at all times from making hostile, negative, or abusive remarks about the opposing team. Refrain at all times from coming onto the playing surfaces or from throwing objects or other foreign materials onto the playing surfaces. Exit in an orderly manner at the conclusion of the activity. Enter indoor facilities quietly and remain seated during the conduct of the activity. Follow all building and facility rules and regulations, respecting at all times the property of others. Demonstrate appropriate gestures of sportsmanship at the conclusion of the game, win or lose. Realize, accept and practice the principle that a team's reputation is built not only on its playing ability but also on sportsmanship, courtesy and citizenship of its fans. I agree to abide by the Brandywine Youth Club Code of Conduct whenever participating in a BYC sponsored activity. I also acknowledge that failure to follow the Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, which may include suspension or banishment from BYC activities. 6
7 Player Eligibility Minimum Age: must be age 5 by April 30 th Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken requirements Governs our boundaries, currently defined in BYC by-laws There are penalties if the boundaries are not followed Primarily Disqualified from District All-star Tournaments Sets the cut-off date: age of the player on April 30 BYC as an organization does not permit playing-up in an older age group based upon talent level 7
8 Player Selection Requests are typically honored where possible for ages 5-7 (T-ball to Rookies) Drafting of players by coaches starts at age 8 Parity is an important part of the program Requests are much more difficult to honor Players are re-drafted each year no multi-year team assignments Occurs in early to mid March All-star and Select teams are selected during the season - May EDCO League Teams are selected by tryout for y/o s (April 30 th cutoff date is used) March 25 th 8

19 Field Day (3/24, 3/25*) What is Field Day? Preparing Gillespie Park for the season What do we need? Volunteers, Volunteers, and more Volunteers Hand tools- hammers, wrenches, etc. Ladders- 10 ft.+ A ladders are a big help and are needed Brooms, Rakes, shovels, clippers, weed whackers, wheel barrels General Tasks Barn and garage area cleanup Batting cage preparation- cleanup, net installations Temporary fence installation- for OF areas, backstops on football field corners General repairs Dugout cleanup and general repair of other field areas Install tarps, bases, pitching mounds Items that have taken a beating during the off-season! TBD- Field Manager Oversees tasks but can t do it alone Looking for people to take the lead on certain tasks 19

21 Group Highlights for s (T-Ball) Boys, Girls Combined for 2012 Everyone hits each inning Focus on fundamentals for fielding, hitting, running the bases Scores not kept, no playoffs Soft baseballs used Coaches in field of play 8-10 games per season, 1 hour each (~3 innings) Rosters: max 6s (Clinics) Electric Pitching Machine introduced ( ) Tee will be used after 3-4 strikes Still use soft baseballs Coaches in field of play Introduce catching 8-10 games per season, 1.5 hours each (~4 innings) Rosters: max 21
22 Group Highlights for s (Rookies) Electric Pitching machine (35 ~46 ) Continue to introduce rules and true baseball play (extended hits, using cutoffs, game situations) Still use soft balls, start to introduce hard baseballs as season progresses Rosters: max Use of catchers full time 10 games per season, 1.5 hours each (~5 innings) 8s (Minors A) Games (10): half player pitch/half machine pitch Keep score, utilize scorebooks Announced Stealing (2 per inning max) Introduce playoffs Adjusted pitching distance of 42 for pitchers and 46 for machine- enforce pitch count, restrictions First year with teenage umpires (8 th grade and older) First year of CR District level All-Star team 22
23 Group Highlights for s (Minors AA) Full game player pitch* 4 balls, then coach pitches remaining at bat 3 steals per inning, no stealing home Bunts are permitted 10s (Minors AAA) 4 steals per inning, one steal of home per inning Full player pitch, no coach pitch permitted 11s/12s (Majors) Infield fly rule Structured into two divisions to be compliant with Cal Ripken Rules (2009) 46/60 and 50/70 field divisions Continue to enforce pitch counts/ restrictions Adult umpire 23
24 Group Highlights for 2012 Babe Ruth Teeners Bat size is -3 only (same as PIAA rules) Participation limited to year olds due to participation numbers and Babe Ruth requirement (but do allow 16s for intramurals) Substituting for catcher w/2 outs mandatory Rules surrounding borrowed ninth player Not considered an out in the batting order, except in playoffs All-stars may be selected in every age group for Babe Ruth tournaments (13s, 14s, 15s) 16 year olds can pitch two innings per game All pitching leagues Pitch count remains same (varies by age group) 24
