Carolina won the fi rst meeting on March 21, 1972, a 3-2 win in the fi rst ever game at Boshamer Stadium. The two s last meeting came on April 5, 2016 in Chapel Hill. Current Tar Heels Brandon Riley and Zack Gahagan each notched a hit, while Taylor Sugg wrapped up the win out of the bullpen with two scoreless innings. TESSAR SHINES IN DEBUT Sophomore Dallas Tessar, a transfer from Yavapai College, hit in the leadoff spot both Saturday and Sunday against East Carolina. The outfi elder went 4-7 in his fi rst weekend as a Tar Heel starter, including a three-hit night in Carolina s Saturday win. SLOW START Despite winning a thrilling 5-4 game against East Carolina on Saturday, the Tar Heels dropped both Friday and Sunday s matchups to fall to 3-5 on the 2018 season. Sunday s 12-0 loss at Boshamer Stadium marks the fi rst time since 1962 that North Carolina has lost three straight home games to start the year. The weekend marked the fi rst series loss for the Tar Heels since last season s series against Long Beach State on March 3-5. After that series loss however, Carolina won 21 of its next 24 games. HIATT NOTCHES FIRST SAVE Sophomore reliever Josh Hiatt picked up his fi rst save of the season on Saturday night in Durham against ECU. The right-hander worked 1.2 innings, striking out three and not allowing a baserunner. CRISWELL OUT OF THE PEN Cooper Criswell has been the go-to guy out the bullpen early this year, appearing in a team high five of the Tar Heels first eight games. He currently boasts a 5.79 ERA through 4.2 innings pitched. LOOKING FOR CONSISTENCY Carolina has used seven different starting lineups through as many games this year. The DH spot has seen four different players: Brandon Martorano (twice), Clemente Inclan, Ashton McGee and Angel Zarate First, second and third bases are the only positions that have had the same starter every game with Michael Busch at first, Zack Gahagan at second and Kyle Datres at third. BRILLIANT BAUM Sophomore Tyler Baum s first start of the season resulted in the team s first win of the year, boosting his UNC career record to 8-0. The right-hander fanned 10 USF batters, a new career-high. He allowed just four hits and two earned runs in the outing. BERGNER S CLUTCH DEBUT Sophomore Austin Bergner made his first appearance of the year out of the bullpen on Sunday and didn t disappoint. He tossed three perfect innings, striking out five and picking up the win. The right-hander s five strikeouts matched a career-high (NC State 4/16/17). Bergner has now allowed just five hits over his last 17.2 innings dating back to last season. BASEBALL AMERICA RANKS FORBES AMONG BEST ASSITANT COACHES The Tar Heels will enter the 2018 season with Baseball America s fourth-ranked assistant coach in the country, Scott Forbes. The publication, which surveyed over 75 Division I head coaches, announced the list in December. The previous edition of the rankings in 2012 ranked Forbes fifth in the country. The team s associate head coach is entering his 13th season with the Heels. Forbes played for head coach Mike Fox during his collegiate career at NC Wesleyan from His first coaching position came as an assistant at Wesleyan in 1998, followed by a four-year stint at North Carolina as an assistant from He spent the next three years of his coaching career as an assistant at Winthrop before returning back to Chapel Hill in SOPHOMORE PITCHERS RECEIVE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS Starting pitcher Gianluca Dalatri and reliever Josh Hiatt will lead the way for a stacked Tar Heel pitching staff. Hiatt received first-team honors from NCBWA both pitchers received thirdteam preseason all-america honors from D1Baseball. Dalatri is returning for his sophomore season following a strong freshman year as the Saturday starter. He appeared in 15 games going 7-3 with 3.34 ERA and 85 strikeouts in a team-high 97 innings of work. 3 2018 North Carolina GoHeels.com D1Baseball and Perfect Game last season. Hiatt is looking to follow up his redshirt-freshman season in which he earned first-team All-America honors from Baseball America and the NCBWA. He was to the preseason all-america first team by NCBWA and third-team by D1Baseball. Hiatt worked out of the bullpen as the primary closer recording 13 saves and posting a 1.9 ERA and 64 strikeouts in just 52 innings of work. OPPORTUNITIES APLENTY TO WATCH THE TAR HEELS North Carolina currently features a strong broadcast schedule over the 2018 season with 47 games scheduled to be aired. ACC Network Extra will stream 44 of the contests, beginning with the team s first two home games against UNCW (2/20) and St. John s (2/21). In addition to the ACC Network Extra offering, the Tar Heels will play across ESPN televised networks three times including on April 3 against South Carolina in Charlotte (SEC Network). Games against NC State on April 17 and Coastal Carolina on April 24 will be televised on ESPNU. Every game in 2018 at Boshamer Stadium will be available for streaming on ACC Network extra, including a stretch between March 13th and 25th in which there will be nine games broadcast out of Chapel Hill. PITCHING DEPTH KEY FOR 2018 Despite the loss of J.B. Bukauskas to the MLB Draft, North Carolina boasts plenty of experience on the mound this season with sophomores Gianluca Dalatri and Tyler Baum leading the way. Dalatri looks to be a major contributor in 2018 for the Heels following his strong freshman season. The right-hander went 7-3, posting a 3.34 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 97 innings of work. Baum also looks to play a major role in his sophomore campaign after compiling a 7-0 record and a 2.57 ERA over 63 freshman innings. The Tar Heels return the majority of the leadership out of the bullpen, including All- American closer Josh Hiatt. The sophomore was dominant in his first year with the Heels, carving out the closing role and posting a 1.90 ERA in 52 innings. He totaled 64 strikeouts and 13 saves while allowing just 31 hits on the year. He ll be joined by plenty of veteran leadership including Rodney Hutchison Jr., who worked in 57.2 innings for the Heels last season, and Hansen Butler, a right-hander returning after missing 2017 due to injury. HIATT LOOKING TO FOLLOW UP STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASON Josh Hiatt will look to continue anchoring the Tar Heel bullpen after a freshman season in which he proved himself as one of the top late-inning relievers in the country. He earned first-team all-america honors from D1Baseball and NCBWA along with being a consensus freshman first-team all-america. Hiatt was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) preseason All-America first team heading into the 2018 season. He was also named to the preseason D1Baseball All-America third team along with teammate Gianluca Dalatri. Hiatt appeared 32 times and posted a 1.90 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 52 innings of work last season. Hiatt 13 saves on the season are good for fifth most in a single season in Carolina history. Hiatt continued his excellence on the mound in the Cape Cod League with the Orleans Firebirds. Hiatt posted a 2.67 ERA and eight saves in 27 innings with the Firebirds. He also held opponents to a league-best.138 batting average. DALATRI NAMED TO GOLDEN SPIKES AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST Tar Heels starter Gianluca Dalatri was one of 55 players (nine from the ACC) named to USA Baseball s Golden Spikes Award watch list prior to the season. The list showcases top amateur players across high school and collegiate baseball, leading to one winner at the end of the season. Dalatri pitched 97 innings for the Heels in 2017 with a 7-3 record and a 3.34 ERA, striking out 85 batters and walking just 19. The sophomore had a standout freshman campaign in the North Carolina rotation, named a freshman All-American by multiple publications and earning a spot on the All-ACC third-team.
