SALVY ENJOYS FOUR-HIT DAY --Last night s ninth inning hero, Sal Perez, had his batting average rise before ever stepping in the box when MLB overturned a scoring judgment from Tuesday night on a ball Perez hit over the head of Toronto s Michael Saunders, which was somehow scored an error...as mentioned in last night s notes, he was just in an 0-for-6 slide entering the contest thanks to the scoring change...he then contributed three hits on the field, including his second career walk-off knock, first since September 15, 2012 against the Angels...the now four-time All-Star jumped his season average back up to.280 after Thursday s good fortune. POUNDERS IN BIG LEAGUE WIN COLUMN--Rookie righthander Brooks Pounders, in just his second Major League game, wound up the winning hurler thanks to his perfect ninth inning of work last night...the 25-year old acquired by the Royals from Pittsburgh in a December, 2011 trade, had his contract selected on Tuesday when Wade Davis went on the shelf and then appeared that night in Toronto with 2.0 innings of one-run ball...he became the 291st different pitcher to record a victory in a Royals uniform and did so with his dad, Brad, in attendance...brad was an infielder in the San Diego organization during the 80 s, hitting 110 minor league home runs. NOT A BREAK FOR EVERYONE--While the All-Star break is around the corner, several members of the Royals will still be busy come Monday, as manager Ned Yost, his coaching staff and a trio of players will be making the trip to San Diego the 2016 All-Star Game...catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer each earned the nod from fans to make the start in the Midsummer Classic, with Perez receiving 4,965,838 votes, the most among all Major League players, the second Royal to lead the Majors in All-Star voting, joining Hall of Famer George Brett (1981)...this will be Perez s third consecutive starting assignment for the American League...Hosmer will be making his All-Star Game debut, as he won the fan vote over Detroit s Miguel Cabrera...Wade Davis was selected to the squad by the players vote, but will be unable to perform due to his current stint on the disabled list, while Kelvin Herrera was a manager selection for a second consecutive season...this is the fourth straight year the Royals have had at least three players named to the All-Star squad...the American League team will be managed by Ned Yost, who will also have his coaching staff in tow for the game, with this the first year the A.L. is not using other team managers as coaches on the staff...due to the unusual circumstances of National League parks receiving four consecutive All-Star Games through the 2018 season, the American League will serve as the home team and use the home facilities in San Diego s Petco Park next week. HOME-SWEET-HOME--Kansas City s return to Kauffman Stadium was celebrated last night with the sixth walk-off win of the season to raise the club s home ledger to and a Major League best.718 winning pct...the six walk-offs are tied with Houston for second most in the Majors, just one behind San Francisco...dating back to the Royals success in the postseason last fall, Kansas City has gone in its last 46 games contested on this field, a.761 winning pct...conversely, KC has scuffled to a.348 (16-30) road winning pct. which is third worst in the Majors and a far cry from a year ago when KC had the second best road mark in the American League and fifth best in the Majors at.543 (44-37)...the statistical splits display the record disparity, with the Royals hitting.293 at home with a.303 mark with runners in scoring position and average 5.0 runs per game, while hitting just.254 on the road with a.238 RISP average and scoring only 3.2 runs per contest. EARLY STRUGGLES--Most of Yordano s problems this season have come early in games, where opponents have batted.326 (42-for-129) against him with 12 extra-base hits the first time through the order however, he s held them to a.216 average (46-for-213) after their first plate appearance Ventura also has a 7.31 ERA (26 ER in 32.0 IP) in the first two innings of his starts, compared to a 4.07 mark (25 ER in 55.1 IP) after the second.
