OVERTIME SETBACKS--The two losses to the Yankees marked the first time the Royals have dropped extra-inning affairs on consecutive days since September 18-19, 2015 against the Tigers...the 13-inning loss on Wednesday snapped an 11-game winning streak for Kansas City in games that lasted at least 13 innings, including postseason affairs...it was the longest such streak in the Majors since Oakland won 12 in a row from August 26, September 23, SEPTEMBER EXPANSION--The Royals today joined the rest of baseball in roster expansion, adding four players from their system, while also activating one from the disabled list...closer Wade Davis, out since July 28 with a right flexor strain, has been activated from the D.L., his second stint this year with that injury...as for roster additions, Kansas City has recalled catcher Tony Cruz (Omaha), outfielder Terrance Gore (Northwest Arkansas) and utility man Whit Merrifield (Omaha), while selecting the contract of infielder Hunter Dozier from Omaha...this will be Dozier s first taste of the Majors after being KC s #1 pick (eighth overall) in the 2013 June draft...to make room on the 40-man roster for Dozier, the Royals transferred pitcher Luke Hochevar to the 60-day disabled list (thoracic outlet syndrome surgery). DIVISIONAL WORK NEXT--Tonight opens a stretch in which the Royals will play 25 of its final 29 games against the A.L. Central...Kansas City is within the Central, highlighted by an 11-2 mark during the last intradivisional stretch of games (August 9-21)...the only non-divisional opponent remaining will be a four-game visit from the Oakland A s on September the intradivisional schedule features Cleveland (6), Detroit (6), Chicago (7) and Minnesota (6). STREAK HALTED AT FENWAY--Danny saw his 10-game winning streak go by the boards last Saturday, suffering an 8-3 setback at Fenway Park...he was tagged for seven runs on nine hits over his 5.0 innings with two walks and two K s, losing for the first time since June 6 in Baltimore...Duffy surrendered three home runs, including a two-run shot to Xander Bogaerts in the first inning, while Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez hit back-toback solos in the fifth...the seven runs were more than he had given up in his five previous starts combined (five), while it was the first time he failed to complete 6.0 innings since June 23 at Citi Field, which was also the last time KC lost a game he started (4-3 to the Mets)...his 10-game winning streak was the longest by a Royal since Jeremy Guthrie won 10-straight decisions from August 8, 2012 to May 10, 2013 and was one shy of tying the club record, held by Rich Gale (1980) and Paul Splittorff ( ). STILL AMONG THE ELITE--Despite suffering his first loss in nearly three months, Duffy still ranks among the best in the league...among qualifying A.L. hurlers, he s third in ERA (3.01) and fourth in strikeouts-to-walks ratio (4.81), tied for fourth in WHIP (1.05) and fifth in opponents batting average (.227), while his 149 strikeouts are 12th...since he joined the rotation on May 15, the Royals have gone 16-4 in games he s started, including 11-1 in his last 12 outings...during that run, he s recorded four starts of 8.0 innings or more, including his first career complete game August 11 vs. the White Sox...he also set a franchise record with 16 strikeouts on August 1 at The Trop, holding the Rays to one hit over 8.0 shutout innings. HITTING A MILESTONE--Danny s strikeout of Sandy Leon in the third inning last Saturday marked the 500th K of the young southpaw s career...he s the 15th KC pitcher to reach 500 strikeouts and fifth lefty, joining Paul Splittorff (1,057), Larry Gura (633), Charlie Leibrandt (618) and Bud Black (508). LEFT-SIDE STORY--Duff surrendered a first-inning single to David Ortiz on Saturday, snapping a streak of 19-straight left-handed hitters retired, which dated back to his July 22 start vs. Texas...this season, Danny has held lefties to a.183 average (17-for-93), good for fourth among A.L. pitchers that have faced at least 90 left-handed batters, while the.237 slugging pct. against him leads that group...the home run he allowed to Rougned Odor on July 22 snapped a streak of 361 regular season at-bats without allowing a homer to a lefty, dating back to August 27, 2011 (Jim Thome).
