1 Sports Lesson Plan LEVEL: Beginner Lesson 1 PROCEDURES VOCABULARY: soccer/football golf American football tennis swimming badminton skating INTRODUCTION: Show pictures of sports (try to select pictures of those sports that you are going to use in the lesson). Sport pages from American newspaper, pictures of famous players (NBA). NBA Playoffs, NFL Playoffs, etc. Ask if they like sports. Do they play sports? Which do they like? TEACH AND MODEL: Review sports vocabulary. Have words on the board or pasted around the room. Call out each word and have them repeat. Ask if they know the word. Go over meaning. GUIDED PRACTICE: Charades. You say the sport and they act it out. Either as a class or in smaller groups have individuals act out a sport and have the group guess. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Slap It: Put the cards (with pictures of different sports or balls) on a desk and the students sit around the desk. The teacher/assistant describes the item and when a student thinks they know the answer, they slap the card and say the word aloud. If they are right, they get a point for their team. If they are wrong, they are out. Or in each group each student plays for themselves and if they slap the correct picture they keep the card as a point. 2 Lesson 2 Vocabulary: soccer ball kickball golf ball tennis ball ping pong ball football bowling ball bouncy ball pool beach ball bat ball player first base second base third base home plate pitch hit catch out Introduce new vocabulary. Show the picture of a ball. See if they can tell you the name of the ball without help. Go through the cards several times naming the kinds of balls. See who can act out how to use the ball. Sports survey Give each student a survey card. Each student must record the names of everyone in the room They will ask each person what his/her favorite ball. This must be done in English and without pointing to the card. While they are surveying have an assistant/teacher draw a graph on the board. Record the findings on the board. Discuss the graph (i.e. the favorite, least favorite, was there a tie, etc.) Play Topic Tag (This part would be best outside) Give a topic, e.g. sports ball. The students must run around trying to avoid the teacher's /student s tag. If the student is tagged, he/she has five seconds to name a ball. If no ball can be named or the ball has already been said, that student should sit out until the next round Lesson 3 Review ball vocabulary cards one time. TEACHER INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Read the following dialogue with an assistant. Use gestures and demonstrate as you read. Again do it at a normal speed and then at a slower speed Discuss any difficult words or pronunciations. A: Hello. My name is. What is your name? B: My name is. It s nice to meet you. A: Thank you. What are you playing? B: I am playing with a soccer ball. Would you like to play with me? A: I don t know how to use a soccer ball. Can you show me? B: Sure! You just kick it with your feet. I will kick it to you then you can kick it to me. A: This is fun! I can t stay long today. Can I come back tomorrow and play again? B: Sure! We will be here at 3:00 pm.. A: Thank you for letting me play. I will see you tomorrow! B: Alright see you tomorrow! GUIDED PRACTICE:

3 Have students echo parts. Practice dialogue as a class (boys/girls, etc.) Select student to do dialogue with teacher (Do several times with different students). The dialog is in their workbooks. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Select two students to do dialogue. Students may work in pairs or small groups taking turns with the different characters requesting the balls. Substitute other balls. Create a dialogue: Break into pairs/groups and have the students write a new dialogue about sports balls. Ideas (shopping for a ball, looking for a ball in a closet, on a playground with friends, watching a sport on TV, etc.) Have students perform the new dialogues in front of the class. Play Charades Divide into two teams. One student from a team will draw a vocabulary card. That student must act out how to use the ball. His/her team must then guess the ball. The team will only get one guess. If guessed correctly, the team scores a point. Alternate turns between the team Lesson 4 Teaching Baseball Vocabulary: bat, ball, catch, throw, pitch, hit, strike, tag, run bases, fly ball, bases, first base, second base, third base, home plate, outfield, catcher, pitcher, up to bat (up), You re out!, TEACH AND MODEL: Go over vocabulary and demonstrate the vocabulary draw a field on the board and point to places PRACTICE: TPR - Have everyone stand up. Pretend to bat a ball, pitch the ball, throw a ball, catch a ball, tag a runner out, catch a fly ball, hit the ball, run (in place) to first base TEACH AND MODEL: Explain and the rules of the game. Show on the board Common mistakes: 1. Can t pass another runner 2. Can t throw the ball at another player Get out: (3 outs and change places) Tagged out Hit a ball that is caught before it hits the ground Someone throws the ball to the base before you get there Swing at the ball three times without hitting it

4 Explain the game: Baseball is played on a field, with a home plate and 3 bases at the corners of a diamond, and a pitcher s mound in the center. The pitcher throws the ball from the pitcher s mound over home plate. (Demonstrate). The batter stands beside home plate and swings the bat at the ball, and hits the ball (demonstrate.) The Fielder catches the ball, and throws it to first base (demonstrate), while the batter runs to first base (demonstrate). The First Baseman catches the ball, keeping a foot on first base to get the runner out (demonstrate). PRACTICE: Set up a small field in the classroom. Have 2 teams of 6 for demonstration. One team is up and the other outfield at the bases and a few out field. The rest of the class watches for demonstration purposes. The first batter tosses a whiffle ball (or foam ball, rolled up sock) a pretend hit and runs to first base while the outfield team tries to make the out. This is to clarify the game and rules before they are spread out on a field. Go outside and play a game.
