Weather related issues forced the postponement of South Dakota State s first six attempts at playing its first home game of the 2007 season, but the snow finally melted and the sun is expected to shine when the Jackrabbits host North Dakota State on Friday and Valparaiso on Saturday at the new Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. The Jacks split a doubleheader with future Mid-Continent Conference opponent UMKC the last time out, but get seven days off to prepare for the two twin bills this weekend. ON THE BASE PATH Through 33 games, the speedy Jackrabbits stole 64 bases in 80 attempts, just 8 shy of last year s record breaking total of 82. During that same span, SDSU opponents swiped only 30 bases in 43 attempts. That aggressive style of play paid dividends early in the season, and as the bats continue to come around, should yield more wins. IN TRANSITION South Dakota State continues in its third season competing at the NCAA Division I level (Football Championship Subdivision FCS for football) in all sports. SDSU previously competed at the Division II level as a charter member of the North Central Conference. Currently a Division I independent, SDSU plays at least 43 Division I games against 3 Division I opponents in 2007.The Jackrabbits compiled an 8-3 record against D-I opponents in RABBITS ON THE RADIO Game of the Jackrabbit doubleheaders can be heard on KBRK AM 430, or by logging onto and clicking on the broadcasts link. The broadcasts, with Dellas Cole doing the play-by-play, begin approximately 5 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch. JACKRABBIT SOFTBALL STADIUM Located just north of Coughlin Alumni Stadium, the Jackrabbits christen the new Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on Friday, with a doubleheader against North Dakota State.

WESTENDORF IN CAREER TOP 0S Like Kuhl with the bat, Jackrabbit junior pitcher Kim Westendorf continues her assault on the record books with her pitching arm. Since starting the 2007 season, westendorf moved up to second all-time in pitching appearances with 2, up one spot to fifth in innings pitched (502) and should move into fourth by the end of the season. She also recently moved from fourth to third in games started with 83 and ranks fourth in strikeouts with 352. OTHER JACKRABBITS IN CAREER TOP 0S Junior Kiley Schwedhelm set a Jackrabbit record in 2006 with 20 sacrifice bunts and now ranks fifth on the all-time list with 32. Schwedhelm needs four more sac bunts to take over the top spot. Sophomore Brooke Postma stole 4 bases in 4 attempts in 2006, and started this year 2-for-2 to move into fourth place on the SDSU career list. If she keeps up this pace for the rest of 2007, she would eclipse the record of 47 by the end of her sophomore year. Brittany Postma s 4 stolen bases this season, added to the ten she swiped last year, moves her into a tie for seventh all time at SDSU with 24 and Samantha Heinzman moved up to ninth on the all time list against UMKC with 23 career stolen bases. NDSU THIS SEASON The Bison started the week with a 27-9 overall record, and enter Friday s doubleheader after playing two games at Minnesota on Thursday. Prior to its road trip, NDSU swept a three-game weekend home series versus UMKC. NDSU beat the Jacks in two previous meetings this season.the Bison won 6- on February at the season opening UNI Dome Invitational and shutout the Jacks 3-0 on March 25 at the Iowa Classic. Kelly Cantrell leads the Bison offensive attack with.385 batting average, six home runs and 33 RBI. Three-time and reigning Division I Independent pitcher of the week Allison Bakke leads the Bison pitching Staff. Bakke starts the week with a 7--2 record, a.23 ERA and six shutouts in 32 appearances, 24 starts and 9 complete games. VALPARAISO THIS SEASON The Crusaders entered the week with a 9-0 record, 6-3 in the Mid-Con, with games against Purdue at home and at Notre Dame scheduled this week before heading to Brookings to meet the Jackrabbits on Saturday. Valpo started play this week on a high note, Stephanie Kelly and Carrie Franson combined on Valparaiso s first no-hitter in over five years as the Crusaders won the opener over IPFW 8-0 on Monday at home.taylor Callahan set the pace in the second game with two home runs and three RBI to complete the Crusader sweep with a 6- win. Shannon Robinson leads Valpo with a.38 batting average, but Callahan gets most of the production with a.347 batting average, a team-high RBI, a team-high four home runs and a team-high 7 RBI. SDSU 8, UMKC, Game : 4/3/07 South Dakota State pounded out hits against UMKC in the first game of a doubleheader and came away with an 8- Game Win, but the bats went silent in Game 2, and the Kangaroos capitalized with a 4-0 win. UMKC came through with a run on two hits the top of the first inning of Game to take the early -0 advantage over the Jackrabbits, but the lead

Amanda Fedson opened the Jacks half of the first by getting hit by a pitch, Brooke Postma followed that up with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Samantha Heinzman reached on a fielder s choice in the next at bat, but Fedson was gunned down at third base. Two batters later, Postma scored on an error, then Heinzman scored the go-ahead run on a Kiley Schwedhelm single, which put SDSU up 2-. Fedson came to the plate again in the second inning, and singled home Brittany Postma from second base to put the Jacks up 3-. Teresa Howell came to bat in the fourth inning and smacked a triple that scored Maggie Eilers, who was pinch running for Dani Broshar, to put SDSU on top 4-. Howell then scored on a wild pitch for a 5- SDSU lead. Brooke Postma scored again in the fifth inning on a Steph Kuhl fielder s choice, which increased Kuhl s SDSU best RBI total to 24. Schwedhelm singled home Heinzman later in the inning to give the Jacks a 7- lead. Postma scored for the third time in the game in the sixth on a Heinzman RBI single before Jenna Marston sealed the win in the seventh. Marston scattered five hits, struck out five and walked two to earn her seventh win of the season. Brooke Postma went 3-for-4 at the plate, stole three bases and scored three runs to lead the Jackrabbit offense. SDSU 8, UMKC, Game 2: 4/3/07 Unfortunately for the Jackrabbits, Game 2 played out much differently than Game, as the bats went silent and Kangaroo bats came alive. UMKC jumped right out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. AshleyToft led off the game with a triple to deep center field, then scored when Kylie Williamson singled in the next at bat. Williamson scored later in the inning on a Taia Jones single. The Kangaroos added single runs in the third and seventh innings to secure the win. Samantha Hurst pitched a complete game one-hitter to earn the win, while Kim Westendorf took the loss for the Jackrabbits. SDSU falls to -22 on the season with the Game 2 Loss. HEAD COACH SHANE BOUMAN Head coach Shane Bouman made a name for South Dakota State softball, and assistant coaches Scott Miller and Beth Rohlena helped him keep the Jackrabbits competitive at the Division I level. Coming off a successful four years as a player, Amy Wittgenstein exchanges her jersey for a polo, and puts her softball expertise to use as an assistant coach as well. Three coaches return in 2007 and the fourth knows exactly how the program runs, so familiarity to the program should bring stability to the team, allowing the players to focus on playing the game. Through his first five years, South Dakota State head coach Shane Bouman instilled an aggressive style of offense to go along with a sound

That aggressive style paid big dividends just 9 games into his fifth year, when coach Bouman surpassed Shelly Bayer to become South Dakota State s all-time winningest coach. The record breaking 3th win came on March 7, 2006, when the Jackrabbits downed U.C. Riverside 9-6 in the first game of the Lobo Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bouman and the Jackrabbits went on to finish the 2006 campaign 24-36, giving him 25 career wins. Now, as he continues to lead the South Dakota State softball program through its transition from Division II to the NCAA Division I level, coach Bouman feels his 2007 team is poised for a breakout season. In 2005, despite playing a Division I schedule, Bouman led SDSU to its first winning season since 997 with a record brought impressive victories over Wisconsin, Minnesota,Valparaiso, Toledo, and Northern Iowa. During his tenure, Bouman changed the Jackrabbits style of play, which allowed the Jacks to establish a team record for home runs, 34 in 2003, a record that still stands. His aggressive offense saw the Jacks swipe 66 bases in 2004 the second highest total in school history another 58 in 2005 and a school record 82 steals last season. Bouman brought impressive playing credentials to the Jackrabbit softball program. During his softball-playing career, he earned American Softball Association first-team All-American in 986, 987, 990 and 992. In 6 years as a pitcher, Bouman compiled a record, he also competed in nine International Softball Congress World Tournaments where his teams finished third in 995 and fifth in 996 and 997. A Ruthton, Minnesota native and 992 graduate of South Dakota State, Bouman did not limit his accomplishment to the softball diamond. He lettered four years in football for the Jackrabbits, earning all-north Central Conference honors as a quarterback in 99, when he completed 67 passes in 33 attempts for,827 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bouman led the 99 Jackrabbit football team to a 7-3 record, and finished the season with a quarterback efficiency rating. COACH YEARS RECORD PCT.
