1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #3 / Road Game #3 Indianapolis Indians (1-1) at Columbus Clippers (1-1) Saturday, April 10, First 7:05 p.m. EDT Huntington Park -- Columbus, Ohio Clippers RHP Jeanmar Gomez (NR) vs. Indians LHP Donnie Veal (NR) TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Donnie Veal, will begin his move from the Indianapolis/Pittsburgh bullpen to the starting rotation... In 2009, Veal made 28 appearances between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, only one of which was in a starting role, that being on June 17 at Victory Field where he pitched the first two innings of the second game of a double header against Gwinnett... In that start, the left hander allowed one run on one hit, walked three and struck out two over his two innings of work... He also made five additional two innings starts with Double-A Altoona during the 2009 season... Veal began his professional baseball career as a starter in the Cubs organization as he started 93 of his 96 appearances as a member of the organization... In his last start over four innings, Veal allowed just one run one four hits over seven innings of work on August 21, 2008 as a member of the Double-A Tennessee Smokies. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Veal in tonight s contest is Columbus starter Jeanmar Gomez, who will be making his Triple-A debut against the Tribe... Gomez dominated opponents across High-A and Double-A last season as he posted a 12-6 record and 3.29 ERA (54 ER in IP) along with a impressive 124 strikeouts compared to just 45 walks in innings pitched... Current Indians 2B Brian Friday is the only Indians batter to have faced Gomez last season, going 1-for-5 with a single and walk across two games as a member of the Altoona Curve. OFFENSIVE OUTBURST: Following Thursday s 17-4 defeat, The Tribe bounced back to take down the Clippers in last night s contest... The 47 combined runs over the first two games of the 2010 season are the most combined runs over any two-game stretch since the Indians became a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in The 14 runs and 18 hits for Indianapolis also ties the season high in both categories from a year ago with Tribe most recently plating 14 runs also at Huntington Park on August 14 last season and most recently collecting 18 hits at Pawtucket on July 16 last year... Over the first two contests this season the Indians have also collected an International League best 12 doubles and drawn an IL best 13 walks... However Columbus has also posted jaw-dropping offensive numbers with a league best 33 hits, nine home runs, 28 RBI,.413 batting average,.863 slugging percentage and.484 on-base percentage. AS ADVERTISED: Indians third baseman Pedro Alvarez, the No. 1 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as rated by Baseball America, continued to justify his billing as an up-and-coming star with two more home runs against Columbus in last night s contest... The five RBI and multiple home runs was the first such effort for an Indians batter since Neil Walker also posted two long balls and five RBI against Toledo on August 29 last season... For Alvarez it was the fourth time in his short career that he has blasted two homers, with the last time occurring on August 27 of last season, when he was a member of the Double-A Altoona Curve... Alvarez had similar success to begin his first professional season last year, where as member of High-A Lynchburg, he belted a home run and drove in six over his first two career games... With his early offensive outburst, Alvarez, along with the red hot Carlos Santana of Columbus, currently lead the International League with three home runs and seven RBI apiece... The third baseman split the 2009 campaign with High-A Lynchburg and Double-A Altoona (Pa.), where he had 27 HR and 95 RBI in 126 games en route to being named the Pirates Minor League Hitter of the Year The same publication also named Alvarez Pittsburgh s Best Power Hitter prior to the start of the 2010 season. DOUBLE TROUBLE: The Indians belted seven doubles in last night s contest to increase their IL lead to 12 over the first two games of this season... The seven doubles are the most for the Indians since they also had seven against Pawtucket on July 16 of last season... 1B Steve Pearce and CF Jose Tabata each collected multiple two-baggers last night with Pearce accomplishing this feat for the second consecutive game to give him a league-leading four doubles so far this season. SAVING THE DAY: In last night s contest Indians reliever Brian Bass tossed three innings of relief to earn just the third save of his long career... Bass also saved a single contest for the Minnesota Twins in 2008 and the Rochester Red Wings in It was the Indians first three inning save since current Tribe reliever Jeremy Powell also accomplished the feat against the Clippers at Huntington Park on August 15 of last season.
