They are in the midst of a difficult fivegame week as they face No. 6 Auburn (19-2) Tuesday before hosting Mercer and then travel to Raleigh, N.C. for a three-game series at NC State. GT head coach Danny Hall enters the week one victory shy of career win number 1,000 as the Yellow Jackets' skipper. The Yellow Jackets are 2-0 against in-state foes, having defeated Georgia Southern (Feb. 20) and Georgia State (March 7). Georgia Tech is led by an impressive offense, which entered the week batting.323 with 219 hits, 28 home runs and a collective slugging percentage of.510. The Bears will face freshman left-hander Will Shirah, who will be making his first career start on the mound Wednesday. A LOOK AT THE SERIES After winning three straight games in the series in , Mercer has fallen to the Yellow Jackets in five of the last six meetings. Mercer and Georgia Tech have met 166 times since their first clash in The two teams have played every year at least once since Series: Georgia Tech Last Meeting: April 18, 2017 Georgia Tech, 8-5 Streak: Georgia Tech, 2 K'S FOR DAYS The Bears are the nation's leaders with 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Mercer's 260 strikeouts in innings pitched have been highlighted by a pair of 23-strikeout performances on Feb. 23 and March 5. Only two teams nationally have thrown 23 strikeouts in a game this season (Harvard), with Mercer being the only team to do it twice. Mercer set a program record with 522 strikeouts in SOCON #4PEAT? Since joining the Southern Conference in 2015, Mercer has established a dominance with three consecutive regular season titles. The Bears became the first SoCon team to three-peat since Western Carolina claimed three SoCon South Division titles and the overall league title from The last program to win the title four consecutive years was West Virginia, which won it in Mercer head coach Craig Gibson has made his mark at his alma mater, helping the Bears reach the 35-win mark in each of the past eight years. Only five NCAA Division I programs entered the 2018 season with seven in a row: Mercer, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, LSU and Vanderbilt. EIGHT CONSECUTIVE SEASONS WITH 35 WINS OR MORE DEFEND YOUR TURF Mercer's steady dominance at OrthoGeorgia Park since the 2012 campaign has played a key role in eight consecutive seasons with 35 wins or more. The Bears are at home since '12, including a 14-3 mark so far in LIGHTNING ROD Senior right fielder Trey Truitt has been a catalyst for a Mercer offense averaging 9.6 runs per game this season. He was named the SoCon Player of the Week and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week on Monday for a staggering four-game stretch in which he batted.588 with 14 RBI, four home runs, eight runs scored and two stolen bases. Truitt is batting.427 for the season and is currently riding a career-long 13-game hit streak. He ranks among the top five in numerous SoCon statistical categories including total bases (60), slugging percentage (.800), RBI (21), runs scored (28), on base percentage (.511), home runs (7) and hits (32). VANN'S THE MAN After impressing in his first career start with a 6.2-inning, seven-strikeout effort at Kennesaw State on Feb. 27, senior left-hander Christian Vann emerged as a capable starting pitcher for the Bears. He cracked the weekend rotation at Kansas State and despite taking the loss, has proven to be one of Mercer's top arms. Vann will get the start Wednesday at Georgia Tech. Opposing batters are hitting a miniscule.169 against him over 22.0 innings. He ranks 34th nationally with strikeouts per nine innings. YOUR CHOICE: BROOM OR SPEAR Junior right-handed pitchers Robert Broom and Nick Spear are two of 52 players on the preseason watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. Mercer is the only school with multiple players named to the watch list. The award is given annually to the top relief pitcher at the NCAA Division I level. Both have been excellent out of the bullpen this season. Broom (3-0, 1.54 ERA) has recorded one save and 41 strikeouts in 23.1 innings. His strikeouts per nine innings rank fifth nationally. Spear (1-0, 3.45 ERA) owns a team-best four saves after recording a pair in Mercer's sweep of Eastern Kentucky on March He has tossed 15.2 innings over a team-leading 10 appearances and has 27 strikeouts while opposing batters are hitting only.203 against him. 2 MERCER BASEBALL GAME NOTES

3 JACK OF ALL TRADES After three years of anchoring Mercer's left field corner, senior Jackson Ware had a "first" experience on Feb. 23 vs. UNC Asheville at OrthoGeorgia Park. The Statesboro, Ga., native made his first career start at third base after making 145 starts in left field dating back to Since Ware took over the starting role at the hot corner, Mercer is Ware is batting.297 in 74 at bats this season with 20 runs, 14 RBI and seven extra base hits. A former high school infielder, Ware was recruited to Mercer as an infielder, but made himself at home in left field mid-way through his freshman year when he claimed the starting role. COX IN CONTROL The odds have tended to be in Mercer's favor whenever Austin Cox takes the mound this season. Mercer is undefeated (5-0) when its left-handed ace starts this season and has outscored its opponents in such games. Cox (4-0, 5.11 ERA) ranks second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (16.05). MERCER'S HOUND DOG Basset hounds are often considered to be reliable, easy-natured and peaceful dogs. Mercer freshman Le Bassett compares to the dog breed in more than a name similarity, as he has emerged as one of the Bears' smoothest bats. Six of Bassett's 17 hits this season are home runs, including a pinch-hit three-run blast that rallied Mercer to a 5-4 victory over UNC Asheville on Feb. 24. Although the freshman has cooled off of late, he is still fourth on the team with 20 RBI. J-TEE BALL? Senior catcher JT Thomas was named the 2018 preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year, as voted by the league's coaches. Thomas earned two preseason All-America First Team nods by Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA as well after an impressive junior campaign for the Bears. A product of Woodstock, Ga., Thomas has picked up where he left off in 2017 with a torrid start through 18 games this season. Thomas has already tallied a career-long 16-game hit streak and despite cooling off offensively of late, is still batting.354 for the season. Thomas was also named to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, proving his defensive caliber. The award is presented to the top catcher in NCAA Division I by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. HAVE A DAY, RJ While he was projected as one of the Southern Conference's top freshmen before ever playing a game, shortstop RJ Yeager showed growing pains early this season. Those days already seem to be in the rearview mirror just 18 games into his rookie campaign. After batting.171 (6-for-35) through the first 11 games of the season, Yeager has hit a scorching team-high.461 (18-for-39) in the last 10 contests. He has recorded at least one hit in each of those 10 games, including seven multi-hit games, while adding 15 RBI. FIREWORKS IN MARCH Mercer set a pair of program records with 33 runs scored on 28 hits in its 33-6 defeat of Holy Cross on March 5. The 33 runs are the third most in Southern Conference history and the second most by a NCAA Division I team this season. Mercer's 28 hits are tied for the eighth most in SoCon history. All but one of Mercer's 15 batters notched at least one hit while nine Bears recorded at least two hits. Brandon Michie (4-for-4), RJ Yeager (3-for-6), David Posas (3- for-4) and Cory Wright (3-for-4) led the Bears in the hits category. THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER Junior transfer and Australian product Brandon Michie has provided serious pop in the middle of Mercer's lineup. Michie has reached base in all 14 games he has played season and is batting a team-leading.460. Michie is one of four nationally players to record six hits in a single game this season; he went 6-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored against UNC Asheville on Feb. 23. Since taking over for the legendary Barry Myers in 2004, Gibson ( ) has guided the Bears from the depths of the Atlantic Sun Conference to the top of the Southern Conference, all while establishing Mercer as one of the most respected programs in the southeast. Consistency has become the standard under Gibson, as Mercer is one of just five NCAA Division I programs with 35 wins in each of the last eight years, joining Coastal Carolina, Florida State, LSU and Vanderbilt. A large part of that success is due to the program s dominance at OrthoGeorgia Park at Claude Smith Field. The program is overall at home since the start of the 2012 campaign, including a 24-4 mark in 2014 to rank seventh in the nation with a.857 winning percentage. The Bears have captured a number of program-defining victories over some of the nation s elite with Gibson at the helm. Mercer has secured 17 wins over ranked foes under Gibson s tenure including wins over then No. 1 ranked Florida and No. 1 ranked Clemson in 2006, a two-game series sweep at No. 2 ranked Miami to start the 2007 season, a neutral site win over No. 6 Ole Miss in the Coca Cola Classic in 2009, a pair of wins against a No. 6 and No. 9 ranked Georgia Tech team in 2011, a three-game home series sweep of No. 24 FGCU in 2013 and a three-game road sweep of No. 8 East Carolina in The Bears are poised to reload in 2018 after capturing their third consecutive Southern Conference regular season title last year, when they went overall (17-6 SoCon). Mercer won 12 straight conference games at one point and cracked Baseball America s top 25 poll at No. 24 despite going 1-2 at the SoCon Tournament. Gibson was named the 2017 SoCon Coach of the Year the second time he has earned the conference's honor while senior shortstop Ryan Hagan claimed co-player of the year honors. Three Bears Danny Edgeworth, Charlie Madden and Ryan Askew were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft, pushing the total to 18 players drafted under Gibson s lead. There was no shortage of individual success for Gibson who earned career victory No. 400 on March 1, 2016 and Mercer in 2016, which was highlighted by Golden Spikes Award winner and consensus All-American Kyle Lewis rise to stardom. Lewis became Mercer s highest draft selection, going at No. 11 overall to the Seattle Mariners. Gibson s mentorship helped the junior center fielder develop into one of college baseball s premier position players as he ranked among national statistical leaders in batting average (.395), bases on balls (66), hits (88), home runs (20), on-base percentage (.535), runs scored (70), RBIs (72) and slugging percentage (.731). Lewis became the most decorated student-athlete in Mercer University history has he captured his second straight SoCon Player of the Year honor, was named a Rawlings Gold Glove winner and earned five National Player of the Year recognitions from the likes of USA Baseball, Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), among others.
