Starter Anibal Sanchez (W, 3-1) threw 6.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. In the top of the 2nd inning, first baseman John Hicks ripped an opposite field three-run homer off CC Sabathia, capping a 10-pitch at-bat. Le -fielder Jus n Upton launched a solo home run to le in the 3rd inning to make it 4-0 Tigers. Didi Gregorius cut the lead in half with a two-run homer in the bo om of the 4th inning. He added an RBI single in the 8th inning off reliever Daniel Stumpf, trimming the lead to one. Shane Greene entered the game with one out in the 8th and immediately induced an inning-ending double play. He ran into trouble with two outs in the 9th a er walking pinch-hi er Jacoby Ellsbury, who advanced to third on a wild pickoff throw to 1st base. Bre Gardner was inten onally walked and then stole second base, pu ng two runners in scoring posi on. But Greene got Clint Frazier to pop out to shortstop Dixon Machado to preserve the Tigers 4-3 win. IT S BEEN A WHILE: A er taking two of three games at Yankee Stadium last year, the Tigers are looking to win back-to-back series in New York for the first me since May 14 to June 23, 1974 (2-0 & 2-1). Detroit has struggled in the Bronx in recent years, going 9-19 since Yankee Stadium opened in The series win here last year was their first in the new ballpark. GREENE WITH ENVY: Tigers reliever Shane Greene picked up his first save last night since taking over the closers role from Jus n Wilson, who was traded to the Chicago Cubs on Monday. It was the third save of Greene s career and first since July 21, 2016 at CWS. Yesterday also marked the first mul -inning save of his career (previous were 1.0 IP & 0.2 IP). With the ou ng, Greene extended his season-long scoreless streak to 12.1 innings (14 G since July 1st), which is ed for the 4th-longest ac ve streak in the American League. He has allowed only five hits over that stretch (.125 opp. AVG) with a 9.49 SO/9.0 IP ra o (13 SO). DEAR JOHN: John Hicks, who was recalled from triple-a Toledo for the fi h me this season on Monday, delivered the big blow for the Tigers last night, a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the top of the 2nd inning. Hicks is now ba ng.333 (13x39) with a.641 slugging percentage and OPS in 12 road games this year for Detroit, including three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI. He has at least one hit in nine of those 12 games. McCANN DO ATTITUDE: James McCann had a pair of hits in last night s game to extend his hi ng streak to a career-long 11 games. The streak ranks as the thirdlongest ac ve streak in the American League, trailing only a 13-game streak by NYY s Bre Gardner and a 12-game streak by CLE s Francisco Lindor. Over the 11- game streak, McCann is hi ng.450 (18x40) with five doubles, one home run, six RBI and six runs scored. In 16 games during the month of July, McCann hit.396 (19x48) with a.473 on-base percentage, which ranked second in the AL, and a.625 SLG %, which ranked fi h. ON THIS DATE IN TIGERS HISTORY: As a recipient of the Ford C. Frick award for his major contribu ons to baseball as a broadcaster, Ernie Harwell became the fi h honoree to be inducted into the Na onal Baseball Hall of Fame. The Tigers play-byplay announcer, who described himself as a tongue- ed kid from Georgia, was overcome with joy as he shared his heart-felt apprecia on for the game with the Cooperstown crowd. ROAD WARRIORS: In their last road series, the Tigers took two of three games from the Minnesota Twins. They re now aiming to win consecu ve road series for the first me this season. They have not won backto-back road series since they won three straight from August 12 to September 4, 2016 (2-1 at TEX, 3-0 at MIN, 2-1 at KC).
