Martin Agosta (5-9, 4.25) is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants in tonight s game. The Quakes also host Game 2 tomorrow before the series shifts to San Jose for Game 3 on Saturday and Games 4 and 5 on Sunday and Monday (if necessary). North Division Champs The Giants earned a 6-5, 11-inning victory over host Visalia last night in the decisive Game 5 to cap an epic North Division Series. All five games in the series were decided by one run. After the Rawhide won the first two games to push San Jose to the brink of elimination, the Giants returned home and posted back-to-back 5-4 walk-off victories on Monday and Tuesday (13 innings). Yesterday s Game 5 triumph was the second extra-inning game of the series. San Jose went just 4-15 against Visalia during the regular season. LAST GAME September (11) - R H E San Jose Visalia WP: Smith (1-0) LP: Curtis (0-1) S: Black (1) Angel Villalona hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Giants to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Visalia Rawhide in the decisive fifth game of the North Division Series last night at Recreation Park. The Giants built a 5-2 lead only to see the Rawhide score single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to draw even. The contest remained deadlocked until Villalona led off the top of the 11th with a home run. Jake Smith earned the win after tossing scoreless bottom of the ninth and tenth innings to keep the game tied. Ray Black pitched a perfect bottom of the 11th for the save. Brian Ragira and Brandon Bednar each homered as part of three-hit games to lead the offensive attack. Cucamonga, 7:05 (Series tied 0-0) Extra, Extra The Giants played a league-high 22 extra-inning games during the regular season (11-11 record) and have now gone into extras three times in the playoffs (all wins). San Jose is 4-0 in elimination games during the postseason with three of the victories coming in extra innings. Postseason By-The-Numbers Through eight playoff games, the Giants are batting.253 as a team and averaging 4.4 runs per contest (regular season:.256 AVG, 4.2 R/game). Angel Villalona leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI s (9) during the postseason while Brian Ragira is tops on the club with a.417 batting average (10-for-24). Versus The Quakes San Jose went 6-1 against Rancho Cucamonga during the regular season. The Giants swept a fourgame series at Municipal Stadium from May before taking two out of three at LoanMart Field from August Championship History The Giants are in the playoffs for the 11th time in the last 12 years. San Jose missed the postseason last year after reaching the playoffs in a league-record 10 consecutive seasons from Over their 28- year history, the San Jose Giants have won six championships (1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010). Regular Season Review The Giants finished the regular season with a record and qualified for the playoffs as the second Wild Card team out of the North Division. San Jose finished the first half at and in fourth place in the North Division. The Giants then went in the second half tied for first with Visalia (Rawhide owned the tiebreaker). League-Leading Pitching Staff San Jose boasted the lowest team ERA in the California League this season at The Giants were also first in the league in strikeouts (1,345 led all of MiLB) and shutouts (15). The San Jose pitching staff set a team record for strikeouts in a single-season (previous record: 1,282 strikeouts in 2013). Strong Finish San Jose s record since July 1 was tops in the California League. At The Plate The Giants 594 runs scored this year (4.2 per game) established a new team record for fewest runs in a single-season (previous low: 600 runs in 1989). San Jose ranked eighth in the league in batting average (.256) and ninth in runs scored. Giant Bullpen Since July 1, the Giants bullpen owned a stellar 2.38 ERA. Closer Jake Smith finished the regular season tied for fourth in the league in saves (16) and ninth in strikeouts (118 tops among relievers).
