1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #110 / Road Game #57 Indianapolis Indians (56-53) at Norfolk Tides (51-58) Sunday, August 1, First 6:15 p.m. EDT Harbor Park -- Norfolk, Va. Indians RHP Charlie Morton (3-4, 4.82 ERA) vs. Tides LHP Zach Britton (1-1, 2.28 ERA) -- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Charlie Morton, looks earn his second consecutive victory when he toes the rubber against the Norfolk Tides in this evening s contest... In his most recent start, a July 27 outing against Syracuse, Morton allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work to earn the win in an 8-5 Indians victory over the Chiefs... Even though he earned two wins in the month of the July, Morton posted a 5.28 ERA (17 ER) in the season s fourth month and allowed 38 hits, including five home runs, in 29.0 innings of work over five starts... Also in the month of July, Morton allowed opposing batters hit.314 (38-for-121) and issued 11 walks, while striking out only 15 batters... In Morton s last six outings, the right-hander has allowed 45 hits in 32.1 innings of work to see his batting average against figures jump from a season-low.233 to.289 (66-for-228) on the season... Despite his recently inflated batting average against numbers, Morton has held right-handed batters to a.254 batting average (31-for-122) and has been able to limit the damage inflicted upon him late in innings by holding batters to a.262 average (11-for-42) with runners on with two outs and a.254 average (16-for-63) with runners in scoring position... Morton has also posted notable home and road splits this season, as the right-hander has gone 1-2 with a 3.42 ERA (9 ER in 23.2 IP) in four starts at home, while he has posted a 2-2 record and a 5.85 ERA (21 ER in 32.1 IP) in six starts away from Victory Field... Morton last faced the Norfolk Tides in 2009 when he was a member of the Gwinnett Braves pitching staff... In two starts against the Tides last season, Morton posted a 1-0 record and a 3.60 ERA (4 ER on 13 hits) in 10.0 innings of work. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Morton in tonight s contest is Tides starter Zach Britton, who has posted a 1-1 record and a 2.28 ERA (7 ER on 27 hits in 27.2 IP) in the first five starts of his Triple-A career... In his most recent start, a July 27 appearance against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the left-hander held the Yankees to two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work, but did not receive a decision in an eventual 4-2 Norfolk loss... In his first five Triple-A starts, Britton has allowed no more than three earned runs in a contest and has held the opposition scoreless on two different occasions, including a six inning, no run effort against the Charlotte Knights on July 1 in his Triple-A debut... As anticipated, the left-hander has also been stingy when facing left-handed hitters, as Britton has held lefties to a.219 batting average (7-for-32) with only one extra-base hit and just one RBI at the Triple-A level... The Triple-A rookie has excelled at Harbor Park thus far this season, as he has posted a 1-0 record and a miniscule 1.04 ERA (2 ER on 14 hits in 17.1 IP) in three home starts... In limited action on the road, Britton has gone 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA (5 ER on 13 hits in 10.1 IP) in two starts away from Harbor Park... Britton began the 2010 campaign with the Double-A Bowie Baysox and posted a 7-3 ERA and an impressive 2.48 ERA (24 ER on 76 hits in 87.0 IP) in 15 games (14 starts) before he was promoted to the Triple-A level on July 1... Britton, who was drafted by the Orioles in the 3rd round of the 2006 First Year Player Draft, began his professional baseball career in 2006 with the Rookie League Bluefield Orioles and, since then, has progressed through the Baltimore Orioles minor league system, pitching for the Short Season Aberdeen IronBirds in 2007, the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds in 2008 and the High-A Frederick Keys in 2009 before splitting the 2010 campaign between the Double-A and Triple-A levels... The left-hander was also a member of the U.S. Futures team in the 2010 Futures Game on July 11 in Anaheim, California, and logged an inning of work in the contest, allowing one hit, while striking out one batter... Britton has never faced the Indianapolis Indians in his professional baseball career. LOVIN THE LEFTIES: Although the Tribe has only hit a modest.268 (248-for-926) against left-handed pitchers this season, numerous Indians batters have enjoyed considerable success against southpaw pitchers this year... Against lefties, INF Doug Bernier has batted.333 (12-for-36) with five runs scored, one home run, five RBI, eight walks and an impressive.444 on-base percentage, while fellow utility infielder, Brian Bixler, has turned in a.295 average (23-for-78) with 11 runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and five walks... Tribe C Luke Carlin has also hit.313 (15-for-48) with seven runs scored, three doubles, eight RBI, eight walks and a.414 on-base percentage... Two Triple-A rookies INF Jim Negrych and OF Alex Presley have also posted impressive numbers against southpaws for the Tribe thus far this season, as Negrych has hit at a.417 clip (15-for-36) with six runs scored, two doubles, two triples, one home run, eight RBI and a.462 on-base percentage, while Presley has batted.406 (13-for-32) with five runs scored, one double, one triple, one home run, three RBI and a.441 on-base percentage. RUN PRODUCER: After driving in two runs with his team-leading 18th home run of the season on Saturday night against the Norfolk Tides, Tribe OF Brandon Moss improved his team-best RBI total to 74, which ranks as the second-highest tally in the International League this season... The Indians left-handed slugger has recently moved past both Toledo Mud Hens INF Jeff Frazier and Norfolk Tides INF Robert Andino - who have collected 68 RBI and 64 RBI, respectively and trails only Durham Bulls INF Dan Johnson s astounding total of 95 RBI... Since Moss recent hot streak began on July 6, during which time he has reached base safely via a hit or a walk in 20 of 22 contests, the Georgia native is tied with Single-A High Desert Mavericks Johermyn Chavez for the most RBI in all of Minor League Baseball with The Indians outfielder has also been one of the most consistent contributors for the Tribe offense this season, and, among current players, he leads the team in games played (101), at-bats (371), runs scored (56), hits (99), doubles (24), home runs (18), RBI (74), total bases (179) and stolen bases (8). TRADE DEADLINE DEALS: Saturday afternoon s 4 p.m. MLB trade deadline saw rosters at both the Major League and Minor League levels take new shape following a flurry of last minute deals... In the wake of several trades by the Indians parent club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, two new faces were added to the Indianapolis Indians roster in advance of yesterday s contest against the Norfolk Tides... Long-time Minor League veteran OF Mitch Jones, who was acquired for cash considerations, was penciled into the Tribe s starting lineup last night and played right field, while hitting fifth in the batting order... Jones, who played in 1,069 Minor League contests and hit 235 long balls heading into this season, began the 2010 campaign with the Gwinnett Braves and batted.250 (81-for-324) with 18 home runs and 45 RBI in 89 games... Also added to the Indians roster was SS Pedro Ciriaco, who was acquired by the Pirates organization along with C Chris Snyder from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization for INF Bobby Crosby, OF Ryan Church and RHP D.J. Carrasco... In 87 games for Triple-A Reno, Ciriaco turned in a.259 average (92-for-355) with 44 runs scored, 15 doubles, seven triples, six home runs, 51 RBI and 14 stolen bases. WELCOME BACK TO THE BIGS: With several roster spots available following the Pittsburgh Pirates trade deadline deals, three Tribe players INFs Jeff Clement and Argenis Diaz and RHP Daniel McCutchen were recalled to the Major League level... Clement, who was optioned to Indianapolis on June 9 after beginning the season in Pittsburgh, batted.305 (50-for-164) with 23 runs scored, 15 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBI in 40 games for the Tribe this season, while Diaz, who appeared in two games for the Pirates earlier this season, was hitting.248 (68-for-274) with 28 runs scored and 22 RBI in 80 total games for the Indians... McCutchen, who has appeared in eight games for Pittsburgh already this season, posted a 4-8 record and a 3.99 ERA (35 ER in 79.0 IP) in 13 starts for the Tribe.
